My Review

You know it’s going to be fun when one character denies the possibility of another ones existence when they’re standing right in front of them.

Liberty Sawyer arrives at the crime scene. She’s statuesque, her long hair falling straight down her back, dressed all in black. She’s a witch, no bones about it, and is often called in for unusual cases such as this one.

Detective Reid Sanders isn’t buying it, Sure, the case is weird. The body is suspended in mid air with nothing appearing to hold it there. But, that doesn’t mean he has to swallow such nonsense as witches and dark magic.

Reid first suspects Liberty since she seems to know too much about the happenings and what’s to come. And he’s not liking that she’s gotten under his skin. An itch he wants to scratch.

This was fun. A sassy, tough as nails witch, a stubborn, doubting detective, and a villain so vile. You know things are going to get dicey.

The attraction between Liberty and Reid is strong right from their first meeting. The author got some chuckles out of me as Reid struggles against it and Liberty just smiles knowingly.

The story moves quickly. The killer  wastes no time choosing the next victim. And the showdown at the end gives you quite a surprise when you discover who’s behind the murders.

  I enjoyed the fast pace and likeable characters and was left eager for more. Witch Of Death was a fun nibble. Perfect for fans of the genre looking for a quick fix.

4 Stars

~~~~~
Murder isn’t always committed with magic unless a witch is involved.
Blurb:
Detective Reid Sanders doesn’t believe in the supernatural, but when he’s faced with a crime scene that defies the laws of nature, he has no other choice but to start believing. And solving a magical murder involves working with a witch.
Liberty Sawyer embodies the look of your classic evil witch, so, it’s no surprise when she uncovers the murderer is a witch that she becomes Reid’s number one suspect. If she can’t convince him otherwise, more people could lose their lives to dark magic, including her.
Excerpt:
Liberty Sawyer glided swiftly through the horde of police officers, reporters, and on- lookers. Black hair fell from a rigid part in the middle of her scalp to her hips. Her eyes were a soul-stabbing blue and her lips were blood-red. She towered over the other officers on the scene, and wore all black, which set off the pallor of her skin.
Showing her badge to the officer, she slipped under the crime scene tape. A few paces away, she spotted Detective Corbin talking to his new partner, a man she knew by name but hadn’t had the privilege of meeting yet.
“I cannot believe you called her,” the new man was saying when she came up behind them. “We don’t need a damn psychic!”
“Actually, I’m a witch.” She smiled when Reid jolted and turned to face her. “I’m Detective Liberty Sawyer.” She stuck out her hand.
“Detective Reid Sanders,” he grunted back and took her hand.
The feel of his palm against hers sent tingles of lust from the tips of her fingers to her shoulder blade, and she knew he felt it too by the way he jerked his hand back. She winked at him playfully, hoping it would unnerve him even more.
Dead Blue Sea
Erin Hayes
(The Berkano Vampire Collection)
Publication date: November 6th 2017
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Post-Apocalyptic
Point Break meets Buffy in post-apocalyptic Cape Town, South Africa.
They say that surfing used to be a way of life.
In Devil’s Bay, it’s the only way to survive.
My name is Carlyle. I’m a water witch who protects the fishermen of my village from the danger beneath the waves. My days are spent on my longboard saving everyone from the fins. My nights are spent dreaming of something more than my small village isolated from the outside contact by cliffs and jagged peaks.
Then a storm strikes out of the blue, and, well, I wipe out. When I wake up, I’m on the other side of the bay surrounded by vampires who want to see me dead. Major bummer.
Only Kopano, an outcast of the fangers, seems to take pity on me. You see, Kopano also spent his nights dreaming of something more, and he thinks I hold the key. The only catch? To find the truth, we’ll have to face the dead blue sea.
Enjoy this glimpse inside.
“There’s some sort of irony,” I grumble, “in being sensitive to sunlight but also having to be outside during the day. Every damn day.”
She shrugs. “Do you want me to go tell the sharks to stop being nocturnal and hunt during the day?”
I snicker. “Aw, could you? Because then the fishermen could do their thing at night. And we could all avoid the sun like good, self-respecting, UV-sensitive witches.”
She chuckles darkly. “Ag, if only! But this is what we signed up for.”
I flick some sea water her way, and she squeals in mock-shock. “I signed up for this?”
Her smile falters. “Well, your mother did. But you’re still out here.”
Not that I really have any choice in the matter. It’s what’s best for the village, and there’s no denying that. I’m the best remaining water witch—if I suddenly stopped, we all knew that fishermen would lose their lives, food would become scarce in my village, and my own sense of self-preservation would be to blame.
Stuck between a shark and a wet place, I guess.
Kindred
The Birthrite Series #2
by Tiffany Apan
Genre: Dark Fantasy, Paranormal Romance
It is the summer of 1933 and nearly two years since that fateful
Halloween night in Plains, New York.
Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, eighteen-year-old Cletus Blake spends his
days working to help his family through the massive economic
recession spreading throughout the United States and many other areas
of the world. As society struggles to accept that the economic surge
of the 1920s are long gone, Cletus also clings to the memory of his
last phone conversation with his cousin Dorothy. Having formed and
maintained a relationship with two of her close friends – the
recently married Reginald and Gail Carr Johnson – the three find
solace in regular communication with one another.
Like Dorothy, Cletus possesses supernatural abilities inherited through
his bloodline. His vivid dreams and visions – including ones of a
beautiful young Romani woman and twin baby boys – continue to
increase in strength. Meanwhile, Reginald and Gail begin falling prey
to dark adversaries that have been lying in wait.
Evil surrounds at every turn, old friends race to help, and ancient evil
re-emerges. A war between worlds brews beneath the surface,
threatening to rip the protective seams that keep the portals
sealed.
Then in the midst of it
all, Cletus happens upon a caravan traveling through his Ohio town.
The very familiar Romanichal family’s history ties not only to his
own past, but to all the kin of the four men that experienced worlds
outside of their own on that summer solstice in 1844. All are linked
to a future that will reunite the Blakes and the Livingstons, two
families that at one time, shared a very unlikely
friendship.
Kindred is the second
full-length novel in The Birthrite Series. Picking up from where
Descent and Sacred Atonement: A Novelette left off, the story
continues to challenge all that is known about light and dark, good
and evil. Passion, intrigue, and secrets abound as history unravels.
Revelations uncovered in previous installments are given new
perspectives, taking the reader on a thrilling ride into a world
where nothing is ever what it appears to be.
Tiffany Apan grew up among the thick forests of the Appalachian Mountains in
Northeastern Pennsylvania. It was there she began honing artistic
abilities and received much of her creative inspiration. A misfit
among her peers (she was the only one in her fifth grade writing
class obsessed enough with Vikings and Norwegian mythology to write
poems about them), Tiffany was highly active in the artistic
community in Wilkes-Barre, PA, involving herself in all music,
theater, visual arts, and writing. Eventually, she settled quite
comfortably into a role as “that artsy kid in black” who sits in
a coffee shop, drinking endless amounts of coffee and tea while
writing furiously in a journal or sketchpad.
After graduating high school, she left the Northeastern PA ghosts for the
Southeastern PA zombies (Pittsburgh). Upon the move, Tiffany became
involved with the indie film scene, landing supporting roles in a
couple films. This also gave way to the release of her music with
partner in crime, Jason English. Since then, she has gone on to act
in several films and theater productions with starring and supporting
roles, release music to critical acclaim, and receive accolades for
her writing and producing.
The Appalachian Mountains serve as a backdrop for many of her stories,
including The Cemetery by the Lake and The Birthrite Series
.
You can check out more of her work (writing, music, film, etc) on
her website, blog, Amazon, and other social media.
This is my own version of a weekly book haul and all things new on fuonlyknew.
I’m also linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberly @Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
Sunday Post
Some chit chat.
It’s already moving into the second week of November but it sure doesn’t feel like it here. Been in the 80s and muggy. I’m not complaining. It’s usually January before winter really starts to set in. And then the really cold blasts are only for a few days. A lot of my winter plants are blooming and the summer plants are kind of starting to die back. I love that most things in my yard stay green year round.
Oh, some great news! It seems like only one kind of my pecans isn’t good but all of the others are okay and I’m back to making some money. There are many kinds of pecans, from Elliots, which are the ones I make the most money on and are rotten this year, to all kinds of seedlings, which I’m now making big money on this year. So I’m spending my weekend gathering them up to take to the wholesaler. Going to sock the money away for Christmas, which is coming fast!
I hope you all had a fabulous week and thanks for stopping by!
Shattered Glass
Destiny Hawkins
(Shattered Hearts Series, #1)
Publication date: November 4th 2017
Genres: Erotica, Paranormal, Romance
Bestselling author Destiny Hawkins brings you the first installment of a steamy paranormal romance series where a dark queen has met her match, and a wolf has met his mate.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
I lived in a world of darkness, never to see the light again.
It’s been eleven years since my father cursed Crystal City, since he condemned me to a life of loneliness and misery. By taking away everything that my mother loved, he took everything that I knew and cared for. Everything, but the throne. Only what good was being a queen in a city of mindless killers? A city that would never see the sunlight until the day of my death.
I truly had nothing to live for…
…Or so I thought.
The night that Wolfe was dragged into my palace, I knew that my life would never be the same. We were childhood friends once, but we went our separate ways. He became captain of the pirates, and I ascended to the diamond throne.
My once sworn protector had become my enemy, but we were both alone, and the connection we felt was almost unbearable to ignore.
My heart only cracked after my father abandoned me, but Wolfe would completely shatter it.
For someone that hasn’t felt anything for years, that wasn’t such a bad thing.
Check out the excerpt.
We stared at one another, her probably wondering how I was going to kill her, and me, wondering if I should even kill her at all. I knew that Falcon would never intentionally hurt me, which meant that he truly did love her, and I understood that for this woman, she couldn’t help who she fell in love with. Who wouldn’t fall for a man like Falcon?
“Get it over with, Queen Allora,” the head of the council, Declan, said. His bright red eyes darkened into a maroon shade as his lips curved into a smile. It was hard to believe that he was once an innocent little boy. “You’re torturing yourself. This man betrayed you, and this woman crossed you. He was your lover, and yet, she was his lover. That doesn’t sound right to me. Don’t let him soften you with his pleading, and don’t let her tears fool you. They both knew exactly what they were doing.”
“Allora.” Falcon growled. “Don’t listen to him. He has no heart. You’re not like him ― you don’t have to do this to her. Whatever you’re thinking, just―”
“Quiet!” I yelled. “I trusted you…” I couldn’t finish my sentence, but I would finish what I came here to do.
The woman whimpered again as I reached down to touch her shoulder, and once my hand was resting against her shaking body, I realized that we were both equally afraid. She was afraid of dying, and I was afraid of losing the little good in me that I had left.
The woman swallowed, her blue eyes filling with more tears as she stared into my cold greens. “I’m sorr―”
Before she could finish her apology, I ripped my hand away, leaving her body to be engulfed in blue flames.
STONE SILENCE
by
TAYLOR DEAN
Stone Silence by Taylor Dean
Great big beautiful love.
Does it really exist?
Everyone tells me it does. They say, “Spencer Elliott, don’t worry, you’ll find it one day. You just have to find the right man and when you do, it will surprise the heck out of you.”
I’m still waiting for that heck of a surprise to hit. It has proven to be elusive thus far. I’m pretty sure the entire world is lying about love and the joke is on me.
I know I want a man in my heart and in my life. Unfortunately, most men immediately push my OFF button and I lose interest quickly.
Feeling pressure to prove I’m trying to find my soulmate, I finally give in and agree to a date. Huge mistake. Afterward I find myself abandoned in the middle of nowhere, in desperate need of help.
That’s when I meet Stony by chance.
He’s a silent and unsmiling man who intrigues me with his ability to keep going after life has knocked him down. Suddenly the abstract notion of love becomes tangible and within my reach. Once I experience it, I wonder how I ever lived without it.
That’s when I stay with Stony by choice.
But when Stony’s hidden past and present-day reality collide, his silence is broken. And the truth about his life nearly brings me to my knees. I can’t compete with ghosts from the past.
I refuse to fight for a man’s love. He either loves me or he doesn’t. It’s as simple and as complicated as that.
My only hope is . . . he does.
 .
The Sound of Silence Series is a three book series.
Book One: Stone Silence, Spencer’s Story
Book Two: Jailbird, Mia’s Story
Book Three: Hothouse Flower, Shay’s Story
Each book has a happy ending and there are no cliffhangers. They are not standalones and should be read in order.
Hate waiting for the next book in a series?
You won’t have to wait long!
Yay!
Jailbird, Book Two will be released on December 1st, 2017
.
.
Hothouse Flower, Book Three will be released on January 1st, 2018
What readers are saying about STONE SILENCE:
.
This story just wrapped me in its arms and held me tight. I adored the characters and never wanted the book to end. Dean weaves a heart-tugging romance like nobody else’s business. Her books are always a feast to my literary mind and always go on my To-Read-Again pile once I finish.
-Charissa Stastny, Author
.
Once again Dean takes the raw pain and hurt many of us can relate to, and creates a perfectly romantic tale for readers to escape into, giving us hope, love, second chances and ultimately that believable happily ever after we all seek for as true romance lovers.
-Mylissa’s Reviews and Book Thoughts
 .
.
READ AN EXCERPT FROM STONE SILENCE:
“You like home improvement?” he asks.
“I love it. But let’s pick something we both like.”
“Let’s rock, paper, scissors it.”
“Excuse me?” I say, surprised at his suggestion. Again, the levity feels a little odd without an accompanying smile.
He holds out his hand. “Ready? If I win, it’s the baseball game, if you win, it’s home improvement.”
I’m still a little stunned and stare at him open-mouthed.
“You do know how to play rock, paper, scissors, right?”
Flustered, I say, “Yes, of course.”
“Okay then, let’s do this.”
I hold out my hand and he counts, “1, 2, 3
. . .”
He does paper and I do scissors. I win.
“Home improvement it is,” he says.
He flips to HGTV where an episode of House Hunters is playing. He settles into the recliner and seems content.
“You like this?” I ask. “I mean, really, we can watch whatever you’d like.”
“Used to be in the business. Now I just own several rentals.”
“What was your business?”
“Flipping houses. Selling them.”
Okay, that explains why he’s fine with watching HGTV. “You don’t mind watching this?”
“Don’t make me admit it.”
I laugh aloud at this funny man. His deadpan expression makes everything seem funnier than it really is. I can’t hide my smile as I stare at the TV. He’s an enigma and I want to solve the
mystery. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Might not answer.”
“Can I ask anyway?” I say.
“Ask away.”
“How much time do you save in your life by never speaking in full sentences?”
He looks over at me with narrowed eyes, but I don’t back down.
“Eons,” he retorts. Then he mumbles, “Smart aleck.”
I laugh, but he remains . . . well, Stony.
Synopsis
During the day, law enforcement consultant Gracie Hofner is on assignment at a small San Antonio bakery, waiting for a delivery. No one knows what it is or when it will arrive. The upside? Working next to Donovan Beck, a flirty hunk and a half, who is perfect fling material.
At night, Gracie resumes her search for a little girl and her mother who went missing following a double murder. Finding the pair is imperative or the girl will become a target.
At the girl’s aunt’s house, she experiences an unexplainable need to leave immediately. She tries to deny the urge to flee and pushes the pressure aside, but the compulsion intensifies. Gracie thinks she must have a brain tumor. Or is losing her mind. When similar events occur, Gracie hopes the new quirk will help her find the missing girl before time runs out.
The Beginning
Cold! Cold! Gracie Hofner looked down. I can’t believe I did that. While reaching for her buzzing phone, she’d poured the remains of her water bottle, intended for her impatiens, over her bare feet. She pressed the button. “Hi, Nicky.”
“Morning. I’ve got something you may want to see.” The voice on Gracie’s phone belonged to Nick Rivera, her partner.
Former partner. Their paths had been the same—patrol, homicide detectives, and then detectives in the San Antonio Regional Intelligence Center—SARIC. San Antonio Police Department all the way. Except unlike her, Nick had found his niche there.
In addition, they were friends. “Fun or work?”
“Nothing fun about murder, Gracie.”
She went inside for a pad and pencil, greeted by the aroma of the coffee that had brewed while she jogged. “Are we cleared?”
“Negative. Double homicide. Missing family.”
“If the family’s missing, who’s dead?”
“Hector and Therese Cantu. You ever heard of Cantu Electric?”
“Don’t think so.”
“Good reputation on the West Side. They’ve been around since my dad was a kid—started by Hector Cantu’s father back in the fifties. The old commercial was like Cantu can do. Hector’s son runs the business now. Mr. Cantu’s retired. Rephrase—now he’s good and retired. He and his wife are the deceased.”
She moved to the table and put her phone on speaker so she could take notes. “Who’s missing?”
Pump Up Your Book is pleased to bring you Jennifer Chase’s Dead Cold Virtual Book Tour September 4th – November 30th.
For my stop, I’m excited to share my review!
DeadCold
Title: DEAD COLD
Author: Jennifer Chase
Publisher: JEC Press
Pages: 326
Genre: Crime Thriller
My Review
I like to go into a book cold, not knowing a whole lot about the plot. It wasn’t long before I figured out this isn’t the first book in the series. No worries though. I got an idea of who was who and how they connected as I continued reading.
Told from four different points of view, this kept things interesting and the story fast paced. The character’s have strong voices, making them easy to identify.
The only thing I was left wondering about was how Emily and her partner, Rick, were able to survive. I mean, they were both in law enforcement but left it behind to pursue behind the scenes justice. They’d solve a crime and call in a tip, leaving the credit to the police. I couldn’t figure out how they lived without money as they didn’t get paid by anybody. It wasn’t a big deal. Just means I should go back to the beginning of the series and find out. And I’ll definitely be checking out the other books.
I mentioned four different points of view. Lets talk about that. You get the view of Emily and Rick  as they research each crime, often putting themselves in grave danger to rescue someone in a bad way. I like them as a couple. They’re in love and have to allow each other freedom to take risks. That could break up most couples, but they’ve found a way to make it work.
 Then there’s Detective Danny Starr. He’s catching on that someone is helping the force in fighting crime and he’s just landed a huge new case. Someone is killing people, freezing their bodies, then later spreading the body parts around to be discovered.
And Kayla, rescued by Emily and Rick several years ago, is now shadowing the case, trying to reconnect with Emily and thank her for saving her life. She’s putting herself smack dab into danger again. Being a teen, I cut her some slack for what she was doing. Young people seem to think they’ll live forever and she clearly believes lightning won’t strike twice.
Last but certainly not least is the serial killer. Suffering from a violent past, the killer is used to violence and revels in taunting the police, leaving body parts for them to discover and a puzzling motive to figure out. Going through trauma isn’t an excuse to dish out crap on others, and I couldn’t find much symphony for the serial killer. Just too much evil there.
I know. There’s a lot happening. I got caught up in the suspense. I could see the character’s heading on a collision course. And when they all converged, the suspense darn near killed me. I really had no idea how it would end, who would come out of it alive.
Dead Cold is a puzzling thriller with a ton of suspense and very real characters.  If you’re a fan of the genre, this would be a good one to pick up.
Synopsis
What happens when one California community has a disturbing spike in homicides? It catapults cops into a deadly game of murder. Frozen human body parts hideously displayed at the crime scenes offers a horrifying interpretation that only a sadistic serial killer could design—and execute.
On the hunt for a complex serial killer, vigilante detective Emily Stone must face her most daring case yet. Stone’s proven top-notch profiling skills and forensic expertise may not be enough this time.
Young and ambitious, Detective Danny Starr, catches the homicide cases and discovers that it will test everything he knows about police work and the criminal mind. Can he handle these escalating cases or will the police department have to call in reinforcements—the FBI.
Emily Stone’s covert team pushes with extreme urgency to unravel the grisly clues, while keeping their identities hidden from the police. With one last-ditch effort, Stone dangles someone she loves as bait to draw out the killer. She then forces the killer out of their comfort zone with her partner Rick Lopez, and with help from a longtime friend Jordan Smith. A revelation of the serial killer’s identity leaves the team with volatile emotions that could destroy them.
The killer continues to taunt and expertly manipulate the police, as well as Stone’s team, and as they run out of time—they leave behind everyone and everything—in Dead Cold.
Check out the excerpt.
The parking lot hasn’t changed; the science building looks the same as that first day of school five months ago. But as I sit in my car, watching girls I met during orientation skip up the steps, hugging their bags, excited to play nurse, I try to convince myself that something inside me has. That today I’ll actually be able to go inside. That today I will stop lying and be the person they want me to be.
Class starts in approximately seven minutes—the class I should have taken and passed last semester, moving me one step closer to a degree in nursing.
Six minutes.
I sit in the parking lot, watching the clock tick down. The car is in park but I can’t bring myself to turn off the engine.
Walk inside.
I turn off the car, reminding myself how much I’ve already wasted on tuition and books.
You can do this. You can.
I reach for my bag.
Get. Out. Of. The. Car.
And then I can’t breathe.
My mother’s shoes.
All I can think about are my mother’s shoes.
How they’ve sat in the same spot by the door for almost twenty years. Scuffed and cracked, the shadow of her foot pressed to the leather even when the laces are loose. I imagine every hallway they’ve ever walked down, every door they’ve propped open, every mess they’ve ever stepped in, every second they’ve held her up when all she wanted was to collapse. Because one of her patients couldn’t remember her face or their daughter’s name or how to speak.
When she lost one I’d wake to the knock of the rolling pin and the smell of dough warming on the hot plate. Sometimes I’d try to take the pin from her but there was something about the force, about the rhythm that reminded her how to breathe. We’d work in silence and three-dozen tortillas later she’d wrap them in foil and drive them to the family. The family that only visited once a month. That would accept my mother’s food without acknowledging that she was more family to the deceased than they were.
And then the next day she would go back to work.
For almost twenty years. She went back.
And if I step out of this car, if I walk up those steps, if I sit at that desk and pretend…how long will I be sitting there before I realize I’m trapped?
I take a deep breath, the scent of a thousand shifts at the restaurant tucked into the fabric of the front seat. Mango and cilantro and epazote, tomatillos and roasted pepitas and tortillas. I can’t sleep without those smells tangled in my hair, without those flavors still on my tongue.
So I have to decide what’s scarier: living a life that doesn’t belong to me or losing the one I love. If the truth breaks my father’s heart, I know he’ll take it from me. But if it doesn’t, if he understands, if I can make him understand, I can be free.
I weigh each option, simmering in the anxiety they provoke, in the hope. Because I have to do what scares me. It’s the only way to ward off the helplessness. To stay in control. I always have to be in control.
Which means that today is not the day I go inside.
My stomach drops, my hand reaching to put the car in drive again.
Today is the day I tell them the truth.
