Elliah ~ 1

My mother told me many times that all adolescents feel like
they don’t belong, but… I really didn’t. So I spent my free time away from
other elves, on my own but for the animals… they didn’t understand how broken I
was. And I was quite pleased with my current find, so I snarled when a noise
behind me scared away the drakeling that had settled in my hands. Black with a
pattern of red scales along its spine, its body the thickness of my finger, it
took flight with a flurry of thin leathery wings and disappeared behind a
massive brown trunk.

“The real ones are much more intimidating,” said
an unfamiliar voice.

Time slowed as I tensed to run, shocked that I’d let my
guard down so much that anyone had gotten that close. How many lurked behind
me? On the outskirts of town, in the thick of the woods near the river, I had
expected solitude.

“Stay, Bereft. I am not afraid,” said the voice.
His words provoked me.

“No one’s afraid of me,” I
blurted. Bitterness stained my words as surely as the pollen of the bloodcups
had stained my ragged clothes.

I turned away from the vanished drakeling to focus on the
intruder who’d scared it away. A man. No, I corrected myself, someone
my age
. Someone not quite old enough for adults to consider one of their
own, but too old to call a child.

But not Bereft. No other elf shared that with me.

The newcomer was slightly taller than me with a thin frame,
his light hair hanging long, wild, and tangled. He was new to the village—I
would have noticed an elf with skin so light. I’d heard whispers of him at
school. Kethryllia had called him Salt-kissed, and I’d wondered what that
meant, but his light skin answered that question. He’d undoubtedly caught
whispers about me, heard of my… condition. Bereft. Yet at that moment, I
thought only of the hours of coaxing I’d spent to draw the little drakeling
into my grasp, and that the stupid elf had scared it away. I wanted to punch
him.

“Maybe they should be,” he said, taking a step
back, though it would have taken me two leaps to get to him, and he’d have me
pinned in one, if he had any skill with magic at all. But I’d prepared a leap
already, only not in his direction. As I sprung away, he continued, raising his
voice, “And you’re right, they’re not afraid of you.”

I landed with a tree between us. His magic wouldn’t be able
to snag me there. Unless he was very good at it.

“They’re afraid of what you represent.”

The Guardian of the Palace

The Guardian League Book 1

Part of the Fractured Arcana Universe

by Steven J. Morris

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Magic isn’t real.
Red Hernandez is very sure of that.

She wants a quiet life after Special Forces—just a steady
security job at a half-finished Manhattan skyscraper.

But then a sister tower implodes in a way physics can’t
explain.
Witnesses report creatures in the smoke.
And something hunts her in the tunnels beneath.

Red wants answers. What she gets instead is an elf with a
sword, a troll with a wry sense of humor, and a dwarf who believes every battle
requires an audience. They insist an ancient enemy has crossed into our
world—and Red becomes an accidental gatekeeper simply because she’s standing on
the fault line when it cracks open.

As a hidden war erupts in the shadows of New York City, Red
must decide: run from the past that nearly destroyed her… or fight for a world
she’s only just beginning to believe in.

A veteran with
nothing left to lose.

A threat born of magic and shadow.
A team she never saw coming.

The Guardian of the Palace launches the
action-packed Guardian League series—perfect for fans of urban
fantasy, modern-world magic, found family, and heroines who refuse to back
down.

Prologue

Corpses patterned the ground as far as my eye could see, a
patchwork quilt of death.

I stood atop a skeletal tower, overlooking the broken ruins
of an ancient civilization, so very far from home. I envisioned the beauty that
the soaring arches once held, the bridges between the constructs reaching out
with broken arms, buildings leaning against one another like ancient lovers in
a final embrace. Crumbled remains powdered the bases of former statues, and,
everywhere, all of it was littered with the dead.

Like a phoenix, I stood, bathed in fire. An Angel of Death.
Not the Angel of Death—he was an ass.

A part of me wanted to go down and see for myself. Maybe
just to make sure… to make sure I had done my job… and killed everyone that
used to inhabit that world. The magic I was wielding should have destroyed them
all—something inside of me could feel that it had—but I wanted
to see it.

Yet I knew that was unrealistic. I didn’t have the time.
There were other worlds that needed my infection, and Earth was on my
shortlist.

Chapter 1

Red – Day 20, Sunday, the day after the attack

“Ms. Hernandez?” a muffled voice called from a
distance, accompanied by a gentle rapping on a door. My consciousness
registered the interruption as a nuisance and pulled me back under.

What seemed like seconds later, the rapping came again, more
insistent. “Ms. Hernandez.”

Ms. Hernandez was my mom… why were they bothering me?

Then a scraping sound, and an alarmed voice. “Ms.
Hernandez! Are you okay?”

Some scrambling, some grunts, more scraping… shit, I was
going to have to wake up. Why couldn’t they just let me sleep?

I tried to answer, but my throat was dry and nothing came
out. Coughing, I attempted to sit up, not wholly returned from my trip to
dreamland. “I’m here. I’m okay.” Was I though? I wasn’t sure.

I was in my flat. Not the desert. My door was partway open,
and a slightly overweight man had paused in the act of pushing his way in. I
recognized him, but his name escaped me. Swinging my legs off my cot, I did a
quick modesty check. I was fully dressed, though rather tragically, in some
semblance of civilian fatigues—muddied, disheveled, and a little bloody.

The reason came screaming back to me. There had been
creatures, unearthly monsters, in The Palace. They’d done things I
could not explain by any of the rules I knew. And they’d beaten the hell out of
me and then patched me back up in a matter of seconds. I’d blown the head clean
off of one of them and fled the scene.

Not my smartest move.

What are some of your pet peeves?

Stories in which a conflict could be solved immediately if two reasonable characters had a thirty-second conversation. People certainly avoid difficult conversations in real life, but I need to understand why. I’m also bothered when a fantasy world introduces rules only to discard them whenever the plot needs an easy escape.

If you knew you’d die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?

With my wife and daughters. There would probably be good food, a great deal of talking, some laughter, and no attempt to accomplish anything impressive. I suspect the things that feel urgent now would become very unimportant very quickly.

What kind of world ruler would you be?

A reluctant one who immediately began designing systems that would make the position unnecessary. Anyone eager to rule the world should probably be disqualified.

What are you passionate about these days?

Storytelling, particularly the changing ways authors can find and connect with readers. Writing the book is still the heart of the work, but publishing now involves audio, video, newsletters, direct sales, social media, advertising, and technologies that did not exist when I first dreamed of becoming an author. It can be exhausting, but it is also fascinating.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

I exercise, ride my bike, lift weights, spend time with my family, read, and watch movies or television. Little construction projects are often (but not always) relaxing: building a shelf, adding wall moulding, fixing a garbage disposal. I also work on creative projects that are technically related to writing but feel different enough to give another part of my brain a turn.

Which of your novels can you imagine being made into a movie?

All authors probably imagine their books on a screen, but The Guardian of the Palace is especially cinematic. It combines modern Manhattan, hidden magic, interdimensional threats, dwarven technology, monsters, and a former soldier forced into a conflict much larger than she understands. I can easily picture its action sequences, particularly the moment the ordinary world begins to break open around the characters.

Torment Becomes Them

By Warwick Gleeson

(The American Oz Maker, #1)
Publication date: May 6th 2026
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Historical, Science Fiction

The War for Utopia Begins

Inspired by a mad vision of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, a centuries-old time war is being fought to determine the destiny of the human race. As the conflict rages between the early 18th century and the battlefields of World War I, Czarina Sorceress Catherine Romanova joins forces with her younger self, Princess Von Anhalt, magician Zolo Bold, and World Maker Niccolo Paganini, to face a gamut of powerful and implacable foes. The most dangerous and ruthlessly brilliant of them all, the immortal E. G. Godfellow–once known to ancient Greece as the “Scourge of the Gods”–intends to stop Catherine and her allies from rewriting the history of the 20th century.

Their bold plan, to prevent the 80 million deaths of WW II and inaugurate a new utopian vision for humankind in the 21st century, interferes with Godfellow’s plan to maintain the status quo and thereby usher in his own utopian vision of “One Earth—One Master.” Only one vision will dominate, and either way, the cost will be terrible.

Enjoy this peek inside:

AS SHE KNELT AT THE CATHEDRAL ALTAR in the year 1762 for her royal coronation as Czarina of All the Russias, Catherine Romanova felt like starting a new war. She’d already endured two hours of a five-hour ceremony while wearing twenty pounds of silk and nine pounds of Imperial Crown; and to increase the burden even further, the droning excess of pomp and boredom had drained her of patience, not to mention goodness.

Wishing to distract herself from the seemingly endless prattle of the Russian Orthodox Patriarch as he recited Old Testament scripture, as well as the oven of suffocating heat created by a hoop dress big enough to hide twenty dwarves, Catherine lifted the curtain on theater. She replayed to herself Earth’s most important war to date—the ultimate conflict to define the fate of human nature itself. Her old violin-playing mentor, Niccolo Paganini, had dubbed it “The Utopia War.”

While the aged Patriarch stumbled over a droll reading of Malachi, her musing inevitably took her back to the time just before the war, to another world at age fifteen when she lived in the Castle Bärenthoren and had been known to all of Europe as the famous and unruly Princess Fredericke von Anhalt (aka “Freddie”)—the name born by her proudly until her terribly boring coronation now underway.

Dear God, help me survive this day. My destiny is Catherine, but my soul is Fredericke.

Even though her every breath and eye blink was being carefully watched and measured by the gaseous Moscow nobles who filled the pews of Assumption Cathedral, her first memory began with a sound. A barely audible titter, like distant footsteps on decayed leaves. She’d considered the scraping sound of a mouse to be the origin, or some other invading creature, for every now and then a cat bird or a dove flew into the study and fell to the floor, finally tiring itself out with fearful flutters.

So truly, it could have been any number of things.

Nonetheless, Freddie vowed to ignore the disturbance and return to her prior task: recreating the Greek mathematics of Eratosthenes to determine Earth’s circumference while imagining herself the gallant Sir Francis Drake sailing the Azores in search of Spanish gold.

Putting quill to paper, she sketched the hull of Drake’s ship, The Golden Hind, before jotting down a few notes on the logic of Eratosthenes, and just as she measured the miles between the two cities in his equation, Syene and Alexandria, the strange tittering repeated. But louder this time. Enough to make her hand slip, the point of quill jaggedly defacing her work.

What in Beelzebub’s name? she asked herself.

The disturbance had become too curious to allow any further progress on the circumference of Earth, and though Freddie hated breaking personal vows, she rose from her writing desk, determined to learn the truth.

My pulse thunders, loud enough that I’m sure he can hear it.

“You have a terrible poker face,” Sterling says.

Only when it comes to him.

When I glare, he laughs—a low, warm sound that does infuriating things to my nerves.

“And you don’t know when to give up,” I say.

“There it is,” he says, clearly pleased. “No more playing pretend.”

I tap my wand against my hip, right where the rune tattoos hide beneath my jean shorts. It’s meant to remind him of my powers. What I’m capable of.

Instead, his gaze drops.

Sterling is fit in a way that looks effortless—long lines of muscle beneath his shirt, all restraint and coiled strength. The Bahamian sun has done irritating things to him. His skin, once pale, has picked up color. Not much—but enough that it warms his face and makes his gray eyes look brighter. Even his thick silver hair catches the light differently now, almost luminous against the blue of the sea.

I hate that I notice.

But it tracks. I have terrible taste in men. Not that I’m into Sterling Alder! He’s literally here to kill me.

When his gray eyes slide back up to mine, his fangs descend.

Hunger flashes across his face—raw, quick, and unmistakable.

My body reacts before my brain has a chance to step in. A traitorous heat curls low in my belly, and I clamp down on it hard.

Absolutely not.

I need to shut down this freak show before it goes any further. And I know just how.

Crater Girl

By Polly Schattel

Publication date: June 28th 2026
Genres: Dark Fantasy, Fantasy, LGBTQ+

Greta Tyler has issues. She’s broke, divorced, trans, recently defrocked from her Episcopal priesthood, and her underpaid assistant hates her. But hey, things could always be worse, right?

As a social worker in a small, northern Alabama city, Greta’s just trying to do a little good in the world, and also come to terms with a complicated new life, a demanding new career, and the crushing finality that her marriage to her childhood sweetheart is over for good. But when her friend Suhey fails to show for a party, Greta suspects the worst: Suhey’s either been deported or kidnapped. Thus begins an increasingly surreal odyssey through the inscrutable byways and backroads of contemporary rural America.

Tormented by self-doubt, and with a tendency to harm whatever she touches, Greta careens through a sinister underworld she never knew existed—billionaires and busboys, asteroids and assassins, human traffickers and misfit geniuses … and also an infernal plan to radically change the world.

But first, how to come up with the rent?

Crater Girl is Polly Schattel’s genre-jumping tale of gender politics, self-loathing, clandestine organizations, interstellar geology, thuggee death cults, and the search for personal redemption in the rusted over-sprawl of the meta-modern South.

“The first time I ever heard of the concept of the dead eye was in reference to a man I knew was troubled before I’d even reached my teens. Rick M. Scharpley, who his seventh grade homeroom class called Mr. Scharpley to his face but Prick Him Sharply behind his back, was a substitute who’d been brought in to take over after our regular history teacher had broken her back in a car accident. He’d taught us through the rest of that year, a mousy, chubby man with sensible hair, sensible glasses, and a perfectly sensible face. No one knew whether he had a wife or kids, or a family back home, and he seemed normal enough to his students, even funny sometimes, until you’d spent an afternoon or so with him. Then you’d start to notice how his eyes had grown soft and buggy and darkly fascinated with you, and how the little ironic twist of his smile rarely faltered. He knew his history, and he could sometimes make stuff like antebellum Alabama halfway interesting, but the various disparate parts of him commingled oddly, which pushed him almost into full-on creepazoid territory, and you found yourself wanting “to spend as little time in his presence as possible but unable to say exactly why. In class it wasn’t too bad; his cigarette prestidigitation and his day-drinker legerdemain made a decent distraction for the after-school detention crew. But we thought even then, even as kids, that beneath his southern gentleman’s surface, there flowed an underground reservoir rich with self-loathing, a vast subterranean sea of near-bottomless black pain.

We knew this, the whole town knew this, because one sunny Sunday in that summer of 2006, Mr. Scharpley left a note magneted to the front of his refrigerator, a very personal kind of mini-manifesto within which he detailed all manners of abuses, self- and otherwise. Then he carried half a dozen syringes loaded with a potent pesticide called chlordecone into the local farmer’s market, and began injecting random crates of peaches with them. Eight people, most of them kids and old folks, had fallen into foamy-mouthed convulsions before he’d pulled out of the parking lot and turned onto the frontage road.

The Undead Mr. Tenpenny

The Cassie Black Trilogy Book 1

by Tammie Painter

Genre: Humorous Dark Fantasy Mystery

Work at a funeral
home can be mundane. Until you accidentally start bringing the dead back to
life.

“…a clever,
hilarious romp through a new magical universe”
–Sarah
Angleton, author of Gentleman of Misfortune

Cassie Black works at a funeral home. She’s used to all
manner of dead bodies. What she’s not used to is them waking up. Which they
seem to be doing on a disturbingly regular basis lately.

Just when Cassie thinks she has the problem under control,
the recently deceased Busby Tenpenny insists he’s been murdered and claims
Cassie might be responsible thanks to a wicked brand of magic she’s been
exposed to. The only way for Cassie to get her life back to normal is to tame
her magic and uncover Mr. Tenpenny’s true killer.

Simple right?

Of course not. Because while Cassie works on getting her
newly acquired magic sorted, she’s blowing up kitchens, angering an entire
magical community, and discovering her past is more closely tied to Busby
Tenpenny than she could have ever imagined.

If you like comic
fantasy whodunits with plenty of wry humor, a cast of unforgettable characters,
a touch of paranormal mystery, and piles of pastries, you’ll find it hard to
pry yourself away from this first book of the Cassie Black Trilogy.

Note: While this book delivers a contemporary fantasy
tale with snarky giggles and a few hexes, it’s fairly clean with only an
itty-bitty bit of light cursing, one fight scene, and no hanky panky or sexual
situations.

The Cassie Black
“Trilogy” has now grown to a very un-trilogy-like six books that include…

  • The
Undead Mr. Tenpenny (#1 of The Cassie Black Trilogy 1.0)
  • The
Uncanny Raven Winston (#2 of The Cassie Black Trilogy 1.0)
  • The
Untangled Cassie Black (#3 of The Cassie Black Trilogy 1.0)
  • The
Unusual Mayor Marheart (#1 of The Cassie Black Trilogy 2.0)
  • The
Unbearable Inspector Oberlin (#2 of The Cassie Black Trilogy 2.0)
  • The
Unexpected Mr Hopkins (#3 of The Cassie Black Trilogy 2.0)

What readers have
to say about the series so far…

  • “Wow
and wow again! I absolutely loved this book! You get such a feel for the
characters and the story is so fast paced you don’t want to put it
    down.”
  • “More,
    please!”
  • “I
was unable to put this down when I started reading it. The author combines
humour with a fast paced murder mystery all packed into a funeral
    home.”
  • “…suffused
with dark humor and witty dialogue…”
  • “Cassie
Black, won me over in the first book of this series, and she doesn’t
    disappoint in this one!!!”

The Uncanny Raven Winston

The Cassie Black Trilogy Book 2

There’s nothing
like an evil wizard to ruin a perfectly good trip to London.

Ever have one of those weeks? You’ve taken an overdose of
magic, you’ve melted a twelve-year old girl, and Magic HQ has sent a letter
“requesting” you come by to discuss your magic control issues.

No? Just me, then?

I don’t want to go. I’ve got a boss in a wheelchair (my
fault), a zombie cat who demands his treats on schedule, and no interest in
sorting out the quirks of another magical community.

But when someone slips me information tying my parents’
disappearance to HQ, I can’t pack my bags quickly enough.

I’m soon destroying historical displays, befriending
befuddled ghosts, and focusing more on uncovering the truth about my past than
on learning how to rein in my magic. Which, considering what might happen if I
fail the test HQ has for me… Well, best not to think about that.

This second book of
the Cassie Black Trilogy squeezes you through a magic portal, lodges you in a
hidden corner of the Tower of London, and plunges you into a tale of mysterious
mishaps, peculiar ravens, and TV-binging trolls.

If you like
contemporary fantasy with unforgettable characters, snarky humor, and a touch
of paranormal mystery — or if you’ve ever wondered what those garden gnomes
are really up to — you’ll find it hard to pry yourself away from The
Uncanny Raven Winston
.

The Cassie Black Trilogy is a fish-out-of-water tale that
takes you from the streets of Portland to the Tower of London. It’s got magic
and mystery, pastries and zombies, sentient gnomes and an evil wizard…because
there’s always an evil wizard, isn’t there?

The Untangled Cassie Black

The Cassie Black Trilogy Book 3

Sometimes taking an
overdose of magic is the least of your problems.

Not only has Cassie Black just lost two people through a
magic portal, but her archenemy, the Mauvais, is threatening to destroy city
after city if Magic HeadQuarters doesn’t hand her over to him…. a proposal HQ
isn’t exactly saying no to.

As the Magic higher ups debate her fate, Cassie refuses to
sit by and watch the grass grow between the toes of the surveillance gnomes.
Biting back her life rule to never get involved, she knows the only way to stop
the Mauvais is to go after him herself.

Which is exactly what he wants. Because the instant Cassie
falls into his hands, the Mauvais will gain the unlimited power he’s always
craved.

So don’t get captured, right? Easy for you to say.

Trouble is, there’s a traitor within HQ who’s proving to be
more devious, more powerful, and with more tricks up the sleeve than anyone
could have ever guessed.

In this page-turning
conclusion of the Cassie Black Trilogy, the curses are flying, the pastries are
plentiful, the bookworms are slithering, and the magical batteries are charged
to capacity.

If you like contemporary fantasy filled with dark humor,
paranormal mystery, and a cast of unforgettably quirky characters, you’ll love
the twists and turns of this conclusion to the first Cassie Black Trilogy.

Author of humorous fantasy whodunits full of mythical
misfits and magical mishaps

Many moons ago I was a scientist in a neuroscience lab where I got to play with
brains and illegal drugs. Now, I take wickedly strong tea and turn it into
comic fantasy whodunits full of mythical misfits and magical mishaps that I
hope give you a giggle.
My tales run the gamut from the ever-expanding Cassie Black Trilogy with its
wryly humorous paranormal mysteries to the comical fantasy whodunits in The
Circus of Unusual Creatures, and from light-hearted novellas celebrating my
love of books to short fiction in which I really flex my myth-loving and
humor-craving muscles!

When I’m not creating worlds or killing off characters, I can be found
gardening, planning my next travel adventure, concocting some sort of mess in
the kitchen, or working as an unpaid servant to one very spoiled cat and some
very demanding squirrels.

Witches in Ampara Deicra are required to use their powers of emotional influence to benefit sorcerers. None so much as Tasch—a witch born during the Anomaly, when environmental changes caused her magic to develop unmatched abilities.

Taken by the Emperor to manage his mood, she has served by his side since early childhood. Granted the title of Imperial Grand Witch, she is protected by the strongest sorcerers in each form of magic—all Anomalies, like her—with powers beyond any before or after them.

Until a sorcerer named Varic develops abilities surpassing Tasch’s Lead Guard. A fact which the Emperor denies by hiding Varic within the Imperial Army.

Where Varic is made to grow his strength past the point he can contain it, and requires Tasch’s magic to overcome the grief of his magic causing the worst known catastrophe. They fall in love in their time together—and forge a connection which is highly forbidden.

Over time Tasch’s powers fade, rather than strengthen, while the Emperor’s greed escalates the need for resources among bordering lands, who increase their attacks on the Imperial Palace. Fearing the worst, Emperor Aldritch assigns Varic to oversee Tasch’s detail, placing the two beings who must hide their feelings mere inches from each other.

With the highest stakes they’ve ever encountered, can Tasch’s Guards save her and the citizens, with the help of their bonded Dragons?

For fans of Anathema, Dragonfall, and A Discovery of Witches comes the tale of a burnt-out witch in her thirties who is trying to survive long enough to save the citizens from their power-hungry Emperor, with the help of her Guards and the Dragons they share a bond.

The Wednesday Box

By Jonathan Kieran

Publication date: June 18th 2026
Genres: Dark Fantasy, Fantasy, Horror

Some stories begin with “Once Upon a Time…”
This one begins with loneliness.

From the bestselling author of WistWood comes THE WEDNESDAY BOX, an illustrated supernatural horror novel for readers who love the haunting edge of stories like Coraline, The Thief of Always, The Graveyard Book, Neverwhere, and The Nest.

“At its heart, it’s a brilliant coming-of-age tale that isn’t afraid to get dark, showing the world through the eyes of a young girl dealing with heavy, adult-sized burdens.”

“Beneath all the strange events, this is also a story about exhaustion, poverty, protection, and the terrible compromises people make when they’re trying to survive. That emotional foundation makes the darker turns of the story hit much harder.”

May has learned to survive in a world of shrieking subway rails, soot-stained skies, and apartment hallways where silence, caution, and never asking for too much are simply facts of life.

But when a hulking stranger in a raincoat the color of broken promises begins to haunt her steps—on the train, in the tunnels, at her own door—May realizes that keeping quiet will no longer keep her safe.

Wednesday is the only day May cannot be alone.
The only night.

And when her weary mother leaves her with a new caretaker, May discovers that the tempting contents of an ancient box hold dangers far worse than anything she has ever feared

The greatest danger, however, is not what hunts her, but the impossible choice before her…
Tell the truth and risk losing the one person she cannot live without.
Or keep silent and face the darkness alone.

Because below the city, something is hunting.
And it knows her name.

“You’ll feel for May, just as I did. It’s quietly devastating in all the right ways.”

PRAISE for The Wednesday Box

“I was absolutely gripped by how this story manages to be both terrifying and incredibly moving. At its heart, it’s a brilliant coming-of-age tale that isn’t afraid to get dark, showing the world through the eyes of a young girl dealing with heavy, adult-sized burdens. It feels like a fever dream you don’t want to wake up from—part mystery, part dark fairy tale—and the pacing is just perfect. It never rushes; instead, it lets the mystery coil around you until you’re completely pulled in. If you’re looking for a book that challenges you and lingers in your mind long after you finish reading, this is it.”

“From the very first page, The Wednesday Box pulls you into a world of creeping dread and unsettling wonder, masterfully balancing psychological darkness with raw emotional stakes. Thoughtful, tense, and hauntingly beautiful, this is a story whose rich atmosphere and emotional intensity will linger with you long after the final page is turned. You’ll feel for May, just as I did. It’s quietly devastating in all the right ways.”

“With The Wednesday Box, Jonathan Kieran delivers a striking dark fable that effortlessly bridges the gap between coming-of-age fiction and sophisticated adult fantasy. While the story centers on a young heroine navigating a perilous world, its core themes—confronting class divide, deep-seated neglect, and the sheer psychological weight of enduring hardship—track directly with mature, real-world anxieties. Kieran weaves a starkly beautiful tapestry of gothic atmosphere and fairy-tale danger, prioritizing emotional realism over easy genre tropes. It is a sharp, unsettling, and lyrical read that will deeply resonate with anyone drawn to high-stakes psychological tension and evocative, atmospheric storytelling.”

About Author Jonathan Kieran:

Jonathan Kieran is an author and illustrator with a passion for world travel and ancient history—and an occasionally bewildered grasp of the present. He lives in a rustic house in the woodlands not far from Big Sur, California, where he awaits the future confidently with plenty of firewood, a new cat named Beezley, mercurial internet access, a magical footbridge (troll-infested and everything), and a reasonable supply of Cabernet Sauvignon. There also appears to be a significant Pinot Noir backup; viticultural shortages are not to be countenanced.

Jonathan’s interests are eclectic. He is as likely to regale you with an account of his latest misadventures in the Midi-Pyrénées as he is to ask if you happen to have any spare cookies about the house—and if so, whether you might part with five of them. Nothing piques his interest like a good old-fashioned discussion about cryptozoology, Tuscan cuisine, classical English literature, the perils of pop culture, or the harrowing details of great white shark attacks.

In addition to running up and down various mountainsides to burn off calories accrued from the wanton consumption of baked goods, Jonathan enjoys a good party with people unafraid to laugh, and he veritably lives for bedtime.

He is the author and illustrator of The Wednesday Box, WistWood and the Enchanted Heritage Chronicles, with more adventures to come.

Enjoy this peek inside:

“It is my holiday,” the man sitting across from Della on the train said. “A short one. Two days. So, I suppose it’s going a little bit differently than how I’d envisioned.”

Della watched him carefully. Who had a holiday that lasted only two days? And, for that matter, what kind of a person had a holiday now? Her university had reached the end of its term, but most of the city wouldn’t go on holiday for another three weeks, and then the whole city basically would take a month off.

The old man must have read something in her questioning expression. “I’ve been working on a project,” he said. He looked a bit stressed as he said it, but there was also something a bit impish about him—Della liked him despite her natural distrust of strangers. He seemed avuncular, and she could tell by the unique worn smooth brown cloth of his clothing that he was one of the North Men, rarely sighted in the city of Breadcove Bay.

She was a little flattered by the focus of his attention.

It was going to take some time to get to where she was going, so she may as well spend the time in interesting conversation.

“Tell me about your project,” she said.

He grinned. It was all the encouragement he needed.

“Me and my men have been tracking something across the northern plains,” he said, with the flair of a natural storyteller. “And a week ago, it just got a little bit more interesting. But three days ago, the trail went cold, fast. So, me and the men, we decided a break was in order. We’d each take a two-day vacation, and start at it fresh again.”

“If you’re tracking something,” Della interjected, “Wouldn’t taking a break mean you’d risk the trail going cold?”

The man shook his head.

He looked smug, Della thought. Smug with the air of a man who has supreme confidence in his craft.

“It’s not a beast I’m tracking,” he said. “Not that kind of a being at all. The way tracking of this nature goes, first the trail goes cold, then, we take a break, and if we’re lucky, as we soften our approach to it, the perfect information will naturally show up.”

Curiosity piqued, Della tilted her head. “Naturally show up when you are nowhere near the trail of your prey? I ask you, what on earth are you tracking?”

She’d heard, of course, the legends: that North Men tracked animals, found lost humans, located lost camps and lost objects, and sometimes . . . rumor had it . . . tracked supernatural beings.

She wondered whether she’d happened upon a North Man in the middle of a fairy tale, feeling a bit like an explorer who has stumbled into a strange new environment, where the people might do something completely unexpected at any moment.

Staring at him as though she were watching a polar bear in the governor’s private animal enclosure, where she had been a guest at the winter party one year, she waited as he seemed to debate within himself whether to share with her any part of his tracking tale—and if so, how much.

“I’m tracking a lady,” he finally said, and Della roared with laughter.

The man jolted, clearly knocked off kilter by Della’s hearty response.

She didn’t have a delicate laugh. It was more like the way a man would laugh when he had bested everyone at a game of cards. And it would come out of nowhere.

She cocked an eyebrow at him, folding her arms. She didn’t care a twig how people responded to her laugh. They could take her or leave her.

Just as she could take or leave anyone who came across her path.

And at the moment, this was a person who was entertaining her.

“You’re tracking a woman?” she asked him. “Did she wander out into the north and get lost? Or are you trying to find a romance?”

She snorted and shook her head.

He looked wounded but still doggedly eager to pursue the conversation.

“I’m tracking a Sky Woman,” he said, and Della leaned forward intently, her smile instantly gone.

A Sky Woman.

That would be more akin to a goddess.

“Why are you tracking a Sky Woman?” she asked him.

He rubbed the back of his neck. “It’s complicated,” he said. “But it’s part of the job of my family, and my men, to keep the balance between the Sky people of the north and the boundaries of the city. We have to make sure that neither side encroaches on the side of the other.”

She sighed. “That sounds like a big project.”

He nodded.

“How do you even begin to do something like that?” Della asked.
