Some chit chat.

This week was so much better than last week. The sun was out every day and I actually got to read outside this weekend. The sun seems to draw out a lot of creatures and some came to visit. The prairie voles kept running out of the monkey grass to grab seeds and dart back in.  rodent, cute, little, nature, animal, pest, mouse, grassThis drew some hawks who perched on the roof and I made sure to scare the voles back into the tall grass. I used to feed them until the hawks took advantage of this and tried to eat them when they came out.

My dog Quigley was following me off the back deck and stepped on a huge snake. This thing was so big around and at least four feet long. It struck at him but missed, luckily. With Quig being pretty much deaf, my screams to stop following it didn’t do much good. It quickly slid into some tall grass and Quig lost interest. Worried that it might not have missed when it struck out at him, I chased it out where I could get a good look at it. Turns out it was a rat snake and not something poisonous.

snake, reptile, wildlife, nature, animal, danger, feather boa, venomWhew! I checked my dog over and no bites either. That was enough nature for me, thank you very much. LOL The next time I went outside I was nervous but Quig just dropped and rolled in the grass. Big silly dog! Never saw the snake again.

Have a fabulous  Sunday and brand new week!

  1. Greg says:

Wow big snake. Glad it wasn’t serious. I can do without snakes frankly lol. Glad the weather’s been better though! It’s been okay here, warm enough but not as hot as usual for late August.

Eye of the Moonrat looks like a trip. 🙂

    • fuonlyknew says:

We have so many different kinds of snakes. I made it a point to recognize the deadly ones as I want my pets to be safe. I keep areas they might linger in clear and try not to leave anything laying around that they might curl up in. Found one in a pool noodle once! Yikes!

  2. Lulu says:

Definitely picking up the Fourth Element Trilogy and the Annie Graceland set, thanks so much for introducing them to me! Also, my goodness – prairie voles, hawks, and snakes! I feel like the wildest creature I’ve had around my neck of the woods have been opossums and raccoons so you’ve definitely got me beat there!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I love browsing for free books to share. Usually can’t resist grabbing a couple for myself. LOL I live in a rual area and it’s always something new creeping, crawling ir jumping around here:)

  3. Omg! I’m happy to hear that your dog is ok. I saw a wild coyote today. No snake or hawk but we have tons of wild squirrels, rabbits and beavers. Magpies and crows are everywhere and the obvious canada geese. They shit all over the bike path along the bow river ugh.
Your new books are perfect for halloween then there is the rat by Hunter Shea omg.

    • fuonlyknew says:

We have the canadian geese here too. They stay way out back by the fish pond. There are several ponds scattered around the area and they sometimes choose the one here to have their babies. So cute. And thankfully they don’t approach the house. They do make a mess! We also have coyotes but I only spot them once in a while at night. I have a tall fence around the property so Quig is safe. I have a huge stack of Halloween reads and tearing through them.

  4. ugh! I hate snakes! And I’m really happy we don’t have many around here. I would be scared for my dog, too! Thank goodness he wasn’t bitten.
I’m glad you’ve had some sun this week! We have had fantastic weather, warm during the day, and cool at night – it’s perfect. I would love to have this kind of weather for a few months 😉
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading. Your new books look fabulous.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I was surprised it came to the house. There’s a huge fish pond quite aways back and they usually hang out there. Maybe this one was migrating from one pond to another as they are all around the area. I read about your cool down. Winter coats and barefoot. LOL The Royals looked so adorable!

  5. How scary with the snake, I’d have been so terrified. Glad Quig is doing well.

    Angelica @ Paperback Princess

    • fuonlyknew says:

I couldn’t get over how big around it was. I used to play frisbee golf and saw some huge ones in the woods so I recognized it for a rat snake. I’m glad it moved on as I have lots of fun critters that live around my house and they wouldn’t be safe if it lingered.

  6. Nicci Boyle says:

OMG, I’d freak out royally if snakes were something I had to possibly contend with when going outside! I’m bad enough with the non-scary insects, lol.
Glad your dog is okay. Venomous or not, I’m pretty sure a bite would have still been nasty.

  7. kozbisa says:

Too many scary nature stories! You cannot put a picture of such adorableness up there and then tell stories like that. I am an avoider of nature docs, and my child was scarred by March of the Penguins (see why I can’t read horror).

    • fuonlyknew says:

It was an odd day. I don’t watch nature shows anymore either. Too brutal for me. Nature can be that way so I try not to interfere and that’s why I quit feeding the voles. They became vulnerable because of me. I still get to see them hopping around along the fence line and flower beds.

  8. Stormi D Johnson says:

Friendly or not that would be a dead snake if it was me!! Blah!!!! So I have never heard of a Prairie Vole is it kin to a mouse cause it looks like what we call a field mouse?

I can’t wait to try that Shea book! 🙂

Have a great week and happy reading!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I won’t kill snakes unless they linger. And the voles are similar to field mice but a bit bigger. They have a shorter, stumpier tale and hop more than run. They make nests similar to a bird but in the tall grass. I enjoy them and they don’t try to enter the house as they only eat seeds. Hunter’s new book has me curious too. That title gives me the shivers. LOL

  9. Doorbells and Dusk has me most curious. The snake..not so much. I think I would still be screaming. Glad your dog is ok. The little Prairie Vole is cute. Last Saturday when we out driving we came across two wild turkeys and a badger. It was an odd day.

    • fuonlyknew says:

Just finsihed Doorbells this morning. Lots of creepy stories by authors I enjoy and a few new ones I’ll be exploring too. I used to feed the voles. They love bird seed. Their little babies looked like big bits of popcorn the way they popped up and down. So cute. Had to stop feeding them because of the hawks.

  10. Beware Of The Reader says:

OMG I would have fainted at the sight of that snake! Or maybe not as I am level headed but screamed that’s for sure if he attacked my fur baby!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I scremed! And kept screaming at Quig to stop following the snake. It was a relief to find out is was just a rat snake and that he hadn’t been bitten. First time one of these has come so close to the house.

  11. northwoman says:

It sounds like you had some better weather this week. We did too for a couple days the wind was out of the north, very pleasant. But I was working or at medical appts so I didn’t take advantage of it. Wow, you win the freebie haul! Have a good week. Anne – Books of My Heart

    • fuonlyknew says:

We had a couple of days with no humidity but didn’t last long. Still, I’ll take hot and sticky as long as there is sun! LOL

  12. EWWW! And I was freaking out a little when I woke up today to TWO huge bugs: one in the kitchen and one in the office! That doesn’t happen often…luckily, they were almost dead, so I guess my pest repellent is sort of working.

    Snakes…voles…take them away! LOL

As for books, I keep eyeing The Cottages on Silver Beach. Enjoy your week, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

    • fuonlyknew says:

My repellent works good too. We gte these giant cockroaches called Palmetto bugs. They are so creepy but are always dying when I find them, which is good. The only thing it doesn’t work on is spiders and they don’t clean their legs. Figures. LOL I have The Cottages on my bedside table. I love the genre and been writing to try the author:)

  13. Are you trying to give me nightmares? I hate snakes. So glad Quigley was okay. How scary. Some good looking horror books this week!

  14. Yvonne says:

That snake is scary! Glad your dog is alright. Enjoy all your books and have a great week!

  15. StackingMy BookShelves says:

OMG, I want to run just looking at that snake! YIKES! I also have read Chuckles talk about Hunter Shea books. I will have to check him out. Have a great week of reading!

    Mary my Sunday Roundup 33!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’m always looking for it now when I head to the pool. I hope it was just passing through. I have fun with Hunter’s books. He has some clever plots.

  16. krazaykris says:

Oh my goodness! I’m so glad to hear that the snake didn’t actually bite him and that it was nonvenomous. That’s one thing I’m terrified about being back in the desert. While my pup is originally from the desert and spent the first few years out here, he also just spend four years with us in San Diego and he seems to have forgotten what desert life is like. He’s always stepping on cholla, and I just know he’s going to step on, or try to attack a rattlesnake or sidewinder. 🙁

    • fuonlyknew says:

We have a lot of venomous snakes here and that always concerns me. Got lucky this time. I try to keep the yard clear and leave nothing they might curl up in for shelter. Quig didn’t try to mess with it either. He just seemed to want to see what it was. Still, scared me!

  17. lovin’ that rattus…Cool critter pics, even the snake. 🙂
    sherry @ fundinmental Sunday Memes

    • fuonlyknew says:

I love watching the voles with their babies, but not so crazy about the snake. Sherry, it was huge and I didn’t see until we were right on top of it. Still leery when I go outside.

  18. Yeah that would have been TOO MUCH NATURE! But the voles are cute!

  19. I’m glad the snake wasn’t poisonous. We have a lot of big snakes around here, but most of them are harmless. Enjoy your new books!

    • fuonlyknew says:

We have both kinds and I’ve made it a point to know the difference. Just wish I’d seen the dang thing before we got that close!

  20. Jeez that was a bit of a scare with the snake! I’m glad not to have things like that slithering in my garden! I’ve never seen an adder in the UK. The only snake I saw was when I was in South Africa. I of course plan to read The Devil’s Fingers at some point and I have my copy of Rattus ready for next month’s reading!

    • fuonlyknew says:

With out tropical climate snakes are abundant. I’ll be watching more closely after this experience. Rattus was a fun one and I’ll be reading The Devil’s Fingers this week. That title has me most curious.

  21. Since Hurricane Harvey hit here last year, we’ve been seeing lots of snakes around here. Hopefully that is a temporary thing.

    Enjoy your week!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’m always cautious after a tropical storm. We’ve had a ton of rain here this month and I should have kept that in mind. Lots of things probably have been washed out into the open.

  22. Olivia says:

We don’t really get snakes here where I live, and by “don’t really” I mean: I’ve never seen a snake in the wild before. That would scare me, and I’d have no idea which ones are dangerous and which ones aren’t. Enjoy your book haul and I hope you have a great week.

    • fuonlyknew says:

We have all kinds. The ones that creep me out are those that live in the trees. I actually had one fall on me. Screamed like a baby! LOL It was harmless, but still!

  23. Heidi says:

Yikes. That snake would have scared the pants off me. I am not the biggest fan of snakes. Glad your dog wasn’t harmed.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I think snakes are fascinating but I don’t like when they catch me by surprise or when they are this close to my house!

  24. Liliana says:

Snake! Ack!!! I hate snakes! I’m glad nobody was hurt in this encounter though. Phew!

    Happy reading! 🙂

  25. That snake would have scared me to death! Logically I know that a rat snake eats rodents and I’d rather have a snake than mice and rats but coming face to face with a snake that big would be startling! Designed for Haunting sounds so good! Hope you’re having a great week!

  26. Lynn says:

Wow, snakes absolutely terrify me! I’m glad we don’t have any in my area! I love reading outside but it’s been cold and rainy in Belgium, so I have been unable to do so for days and it’s not looking like this will improve soon. I hope you’ll enjoy all the books you got!

    • fuonlyknew says:

It was a crazy day for nature! I love reading outside too but this month was so much rain. Looking forward to fall when I can get out there and not melt. LOL

  27. sjhigbee says:

Oh my goodness! Thank goodness your lovely dog is okay… We have grass snakes which are essentially legless lizards and very beautiful and completely harmless. In fact all our wildlife in the garden is very benign. We get frogs and hedgehogs as regular visitors – but that’s it… I hope you get a chance to relax and read outside in the coming month.

    • fuonlyknew says:

In our tropical xlimate we have so many creepy crawlies! Our voles are so cuteand I’d love to have some hedgehogs visit but we don’t have them around here. We do have these huge fox squirrels. They have a mask like a racoon and super long bushy tails. Quite lovely:)
