I Found Puppets Living In My Apartment Walls

by Ben Farthing

Genre: Horror

MY REVIEW

Dolls, puppets, stuffed animals. Those creepy eyes give me the shivers. And that’s what makes me always want to read a scary book about them. And the title and cover for this one. How could I resist.

Johnny wakes up to a nightmare. A huge puppet looms over his bed. Then it disappears into the apartment wall. This isn’t a small puppet. It’s tall, covered in blue fluffy hair and scary. It’s Swoomie. A puppet from a favorite children’s show from Johnny’s past. His grandfather was it’s puppeteer. And now his grandpa is missing.

When Johnny tells his sister what happened they look around and find a hidden opening into the walls. It leads all through the apartment building. His sister insists they explore it. Egads! Why? Hasn’t she watched any horror films. That’s the last thing you  should do. And probably the last thing you will ever do.

I was seriously creeped out. While they ventured deeper into the labyrinth of the walls, I kept expecting the worst. Scary good stuff, folks.

Synopsis

Can you tell me how to get… out alive?

★★★★★ – ” I can’t remember the last time a book scared me and made me this nervous .” Andrew Van Wey, author of Head Like a Hole

Johnny awakes. A puppet looms over his bed.

He recognizes the furry Grandpa was its puppeteer on the children’s television show R-City Street . But Grandpa went missing a year ago. He disappeared from this very apartment building, which was converted from the old R-City Street studio.

Desperate to see Grandpa again, Johnny follows the puppet inside the building’s walls, ever deeper into a puppet-infested labyrinth…

I Found Puppets Living In My Apartment Walls is a horror tale from the “darkly inventive” purveyor of uncanny places and wondrous evils, Ben Farthing.

MY REVIEW

I wasn’t sure what it meant when as this book is categorized as an existential adventure. Once I started reading and met the main character, Stanhope Ellis, I got it. And I got the title then, too.

Stanope lost his wife and nearly died in a car accident. To rejoin the land of the living he sets off on a journey of discovery.  But, while trying to rejoin the land of living, the people he meets and comes to know are dropping dead. Is he the grim reaper? Surely, not?

I enjoy character driven stories and there are a huge amount of them in this book. Including some animals. Sounds daunting. But it’s really not. The author gave each their story and they were genuine and well fleshed out. I’m thinking what made it easy to keep straight was that you were on this journey with Stanhope, and you met each character right along with him. Not all of them at once.

While in the beginning Stanhope’s story seemed bleak, all those people dying, it became an eye opening adventure. Sometimes sad but also hopeful and funny. You know how people say they were pulled into a story? That’s what happened to me and I savored every word.

Perfect for fans of Rhys Bowen and Ashley Weaver, the second Pinnacle Hotel mystery finds another murder that strikes too close to home, and hotel heiress Evelyn Murphy knows she’s the only one who can save the hotel before it’s lights out.

New York, 1958. Even though Evelyn Murphy has made progress conquering her agoraphobia by leaving the Pinnacle, she still feels most comfortable in her father’s hotel. With Malcolm Cooper, her new boyfriend and fellow employee at the hotel, Evelyn feels prepared for whatever happens next. In this case, it’s throwing a big fundraiser with the who’s who of New York City.

The night is a success, and Evelyn finally takes up Malcolm’s offer to finally visit his apartment in Yonkers. As the party ends, they sneak away to the garage to get Evelyn’s car. But Evelyn’s always been good at finding things, and she discovers the dead body of a guest, Judge Baker, in a car—with a needle in his arm.

Detective Hodgson and his new partner, Detective McJimsey, arrive on the scene, but before they can begin to question Evelyn, they are startled by another mysterious discovery: there’s a woman in the trunk of the car, and she screams as soon as she sees Evelyn’s face. Tangled up in the police investigation, Evelyn’s got another problem, too—her father insists she break off her relationship with Mac. The next day, her father is found attacked just like the judge, only this time the detectives find a dead woman nearby.

With Mac accused of the attacks and in police custody, Evelyn will have to find the killer on her own before she’s checked out of the hotel—this time, for good.
