Cowboy Watch

By Petie McCarty

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Synopsis

The Watchers Series—Fallen angels cast out of heaven by the archangel Michael for coercing with Satan to gain control. Some of these conspirators—duped late in the game by Satan’s lies—doubled back to seek redemption for their unwitting betrayal. Offered parole in exchange for penance, these Watchers are given the toughest bodyguard missions with little leeway for success.

One last chance.

These are their stories . . .

Cowboy Watch:

Someone—or something—wants Kellen out of town . . .

Kellen Brand’s inheritance comes as a monumental shock—a rundown farm she doesn’t want and one paroled Watcher all her own. Kellen’s eccentric mother believed Watchers to be fallen angels seeking penance by guarding individuals who had lost their way. Seriously? A Watcher? Only her mother . . .

Since Kellen vows no sane woman would choose to live in Riverside, she’s on a mission to dump the old farm fast and to the first buyer who comes along. Unfortunately for her, the only buyer is a resort developer, spurned by a townful of objectors and one handsome cowboy—her neighbor, Luke Thornton. Luke must block Kellen’s farm sale or risk exposure of his own family’s secrets. He can ill afford his immediate and compelling attraction to his new neighbor.

Someone is watching Kellen, but not who she thinks. Someone deadly and intent on scaring her out of town. Or worse. Luke has a hellish choice to make—step in and rescue Kellen from her threats, or to protect his family, stand by and watch . . .

Enjoy this peek inside:

“And you are on my front porch because?” he barked, while holding the skittish stallion in place. Windsor had had his head, and he wanted it again.

Kellen’s eyes went wide with guilt. “I was just—”

“Snooping?” Windsor sidestepped to the right, forcing Luke to twist around in his saddle to hold eye contact.

She stiffened and her brilliant green eyes flashed with temper. “I was not! You-You—” She stamped her foot.

“Owner?” he said, unwilling to let her off the hook for an instant. Not when he had her good and cornered. Thank God, Windsor kept him so busy he didn’t ogle her like a schoolboy.

“No, I was going to say—”

The horse reared and pawed the air, effectively cutting her off. Of course, Luke’s little heel nudge and rein tug instigated the ostentatious display. He swiftly turned the horse back around so he could face her.

“So, why are you here? On my front porch. Peeking in my windows.”

She gave him a glare fit for the devil. “I was not peeking. I was trying to see if anyone was home.”

He waited.

Her eyes narrowed. “I didn’t want anything.” She hesitated. “I wasn’t doing anything.”

“Well, if you didn’t want anything and you weren’t doing anything . . .” He eased the powerful horse right up next to her though she stood her ground on the bottom step. “. . .then you must need a ride home.”

He snatched her off the step before she could answer and counted on the little spitfire having the presence of mind to swing her leg over the horse when Windsor took off. She didn’t disappoint him. The stallion streaked for the break in the tree line, and she clung to him like a tick on a coon dog.

  1. Mary Preston says:

I like the fallen angel aspect.

    • Thanks so much! Everyone thinks fallen angels are lost forever, but I thought maybe, just maybe, they could get a pardon too. I hope you’ll give it a try!

  2. Thank you for hosting.

  3. marcymeyer says:

  4. Anne says:

    Captivating and unique.

  5. jalapenomamamn says:

I like everything about this – genre title and cover!
    Thank you for sharing.
    Barbara Montag

    • Oooh, thank you!! Both were supposed to be a bit spooky, so your comment thrills me!

This is the first book in the new series, The Watchers, so to hook the three covers together, each will have a keyhole on the front through which you will “watch” a person or scene from the story–all, hopefully, a bit spooky!.

  6. Peggy says:

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block and, if so, how do you overcome it?

    • No, but I ALWAYS get climax block! I get to that final wild exhilarating scene where the bad guys and good guys battle–or the guy gets the girl–and everything has to come together just right with no loose ends, and I blank out. Total brain fart. It usually takes up to a week before the clear story picture forward comes to me. Thank goodness it always does.

    • Just another tidbit. To avoid writer’s block, I always stop writing halfway through a scene, and then when I come back, I always know where to begin and move forward.

  7. Rita Wray says:

Sounds like a book I will enjoy.

  8. mcushing7 says:

  14. wendy hutton says:

love your books they are always so interesting

  15. jalapenomamamn says:

Do you have a certain writing schedule?
    Barbara Montag

    • Actually, I write at all different times of the day or evenings. Mostly when my schedule allows, as I take my computer bag and writing gear on the road in my travels, too. Ideas and scenes pop into your head when they want, not when you want. LOL Got to write them down fast or they could disappear.
I even keep a notepad on my nightstand. You’d be surprised how many great scene ideas come during the night. And no, they won’t automatically be there in the morning. Got to get them down when they appear. 😉

  16. Thank you so much. Laura, for sponsoring my Goddess Fish Book Blitz tour for my new release, Cowboy Watch and for this wonderful opportunity! I greatly appreciate your support!

Happy Mother’s Day to all you mothers!

  22. wendy hutton says:

    love reading about the authors

  23. jalapenomamamn says:

What part of the book did you have the hardest time writing?
    Barbara Montag

    • Always, always, always, it’s the grand finale or climactic ending scene where the bad guys and good guys battle or the hero finally gets the heroine, I usually get stumped for about a week before the fog clears. LOL

  24. Debbi Wellenstein says:

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

  25. wendy hutton says:

love reading romance suspense novels, this sounds good

  26. jalapenomamamn says:

Where do you get your ideas for writing?

    • jalapenomamamn says:

      Barbara Montag

      • Believe it or not, they just pop into my head. Sometimes, just a beginning or a grand climax. When I get the beginning, middle and the end all together, then that’s the next book I write. The ideas sort of choose me; I don’t choose them.

  27. Debbi Wellenstein says:

    It’s Wednesday.

  28. jalapenomamamn says:

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
    Barbara Montag

  29. wendy hutton says:

    when did you start writing

  30. jalapenomamamn says:

Do you reward yourself with something special when finishing a book?
    Barbara Montag

  31. wendy hutton says:

    sounds so interesting

  32. Debbi Wellenstein says:

    Have a wonderful, productive day!

  33. wendy hutton says:

    have a wonderful weekend

  34. jalapenomamamn says:

What to you, are the most important elements of good writing?
    Barbara Montag

    • The most important? Never ever give up! The only difference between published and unpublished writers is that the published writers never gave up.
The next most important? Read, read, read! I learned more from reading both excellent and badly written stories than I ever did from my two dozen writing texts.

  35. Debbi Wellenstein says:

I hope you have a lovely weekend.

  36. Debbi Wellenstein says:

Do you anything fun on the weekends?

  37. wendy hutton says:

was it hard designing the cover

    • I didn’t. I work with a dynamic graphic designer, Trident Graphics. He has given me six kickass covers so far that were just what I wanted! I wouldn’t use anyone else.

  38. jalapenomamamn says:

I would have a hard time putting this book down after starting to read it.
    Barbara Montag

  39. wendy hutton says:

hope you are having a great weekend

  40. Debbi Wellenstein says:

    Have a great week!

  41. jalapenomamamn says:

Have you ever started a book that you decided not to finish?
    Barbara Montag

    • Nope! I never start a book until I have the beginning, middle and end set in my mind! Then I never have to worry about where I’m going, I may just veer off the path along my way as the story demands.

  42. wendy hutton says:

do you ever get writers block

  43. Debbi Wellenstein says:

    Hello from Kansas!

  44. jalapenomamamn says:

How do you come up with names for the characters?
    Barbara Montag

    • Some are friends or acquaintances, but most are names that “fit” the character’s personality that I’ve given them. Writing is the only time in my life when I get to tell “everybody” what to do! LOL

  45. Jamie Martin says:

Do you have any advice for new writers?

    • Never ever give up!
Stephen King, I think it was, once said, “The only difference between published and unpublished writers is the published writers never gave up.”

  46. wendy hutton says:

do you use the same designer for all your book covers?

  47. Debbi Wellenstein says:

Do you do a lot of research for your books?

    • Yes. You have to get environment, habitat, weather, landmarks maybe, flora and fauna all right, because one of your readers may actually live there. Unless of course the whole location is made up. I wrote Any Fin For Love which had a fishing tournament in it and there was a lot of items I have get right, like the type of fish I put in my Loon Lake. I may have made up Loon Lake but it was still in Alabama and needed all of the above to be accurate. That one was fun. I laughed my way through writing that one as I had met some of those characters in my life. With different names of course. LOL

  48. jalapenomamamn says:

What part of the book was the most fun to write?
    Barbara Montag

  49. Jamie Martin says:

What is your favourite Stephen King book?

    • Sorry, Jamie, but none. I cannot read horror as my imagination is too vivid and I too easily get nightmares. No wait. I take that back. I read his book “On Writing”. Its like an autobiography and how to write text. I learned more about good writing from that book than the other two dozen writing texts I own. I learned most about writing from READING. Both good books and badly written books can teach you a lot about writing.

  50. wendy hutton says:

are your characters based off people you know?

  51. Debbi Wellenstein says:

    Do you like to shop?

  52. jalapenomamamn says:

Did you have any writing education?
    Barbara Montag

    • Not one bit! LOL I have a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology. But that did help me in my Biology/Limnology career which allowed me to accurately write my Romantic Suspense, Ambush in the Everglades. I’ll tell you a little secret. Half the stuff that happened to the heroine on her airboat safari in the Everglades in that story happened to me when I worked for the FL Dept of Natural Resources and drove airboats for a while. The department is now part of the Game Commission. Made it way easy to write those scenes. 🙂

  53. wendy hutton says:

are you a full time writer

  54. wendy hutton says:

thanks again for the giveaway, best wishes with your book

  55. jalapenomamamn says:

Does writing energize you or exhaust you?
    Barbara Montag

  56. Daniel M says:

    looks like a fun one.

  57. Debbi Wellenstein says:

Do you have any exciting weekend plans?
