An injustice done, a murder unpunished.

It’s Pride Month in Portland Oregon, but instead of hanging rainbow flags and streamers, Lynley finds herself obsessed with a cold case murder. Starting work at the Cat Park, a sanctuary for senior and hospice cats, is challenging enough for Lynley, but then she learns the founder of the Park was murdered and the murder never solved. Lynley’s cat-like curiosity won’t let her leave the case alone.

But why is the Park’s new owner so fiercely opposed to Lynley’s sleuthing? What’s making the Director of Philanthropy grumpy all the time? Who is sneaking around listening at doors? The dead woman’s ancient cat Silver has a twinkle in her eye, but she isn’t telling.
As Lynley’s granddaughter and her beau make plans for their upcoming wedding, Lynley has other things on her mind. Something is going on at the Park. Is there more to her new job than playing with cats?

TIPS FOR CAT OWNERS

Quotes from Cold Case Cat, a Crazy Cat Lady cozy mystery, by Mollie Hunt

Did you know that my Crazy Cat Lady Mystery Series comes with cat tips, tricks, and facts at the beginning of each chapter? My hero, sixty-something Lynley Cannon, is a cat aficionado, so you can expect she would love to pass on some of the things she’s learned about cats in her years as a shelter volunteer, therapy cat partner, and clowder mamma to nine cats (currently).

Chapter 1 opens on the Cat Park, a cat sanctuary for senior and hospice cats where Lynley is starting a new job. Along her tour, her employer explains that Different cats have different attitudes toward others of their species. Some become bonded to a housemate, while others remain aloof, and still others can’t stand the sight of another cat. Lynley refrains from telling her boss she already is quite familiar with the whimsy of cat relationships.

In Chapter 2, Lynley tosses some treats on the floor for her senior cat Dirty Harry. He finds some but misses others. That’s because Cats cannot see things that are directly under their noses. Lynley doesn’t mind helping her old puss get on the scent to gobble up the treats.

Here’s something I didn’t know until I looked it up for Chapter 5: The most common eye color among domestic cats is yellow-orange, with the second most common being green. Blue-eyed cats represent only a small percentage of the population. Do you have a blue-eyed cat?

An important aspect of cat care, especially in a shelter but also for your home, is creating a stress-free environment so your felines feel safe. In Chapter 6, Classical music, especially that of the harp, has been proven to reduce fear, stress, and anxiety in cats. At the Cat Park, harp music is played over the sound system to help the cats relax.

Here are a few other simple cat tips you will find in Cold Case Cat:

Chapter 11: Make sure you have recent, detailed photos of your cat in case he gets lost. The collection should include a standing photo, a close-up of any distinctive markings, and a close-up of his face and whisker pattern which is different for each cat.

Chapter 7: Some cats are social eaters, meaning they prefer to be attended by a gentle human while they eat.

Chapter 12: Cats yowl at night for many reasons. It may be as simple as boredom or as serious as a medical issue such as pain or dementia. It’s good to consult your veterinarian to rule out any underlying health problems.

Chapter 20: Talking to shy cats in a soft, low tone is one way to get them accustomed to a non-threatening human presence. If you are short on talking points, you can always read something aloud.

Chapter 21: Teaching your cat to come when you call is helpful in many ways, but sometimes they need a bit of a bribe. Calling them for a treat is a technique that works well in many cases.

Chapter 23: An aging cat requires more attention than younger ones. Veterinarians suggest a wellness check every six months instead of the usual year. Meanwhile, it’s important to watch for changes in their habits and behavior that might signify a shift in their health.

Find more cat tips, tricks, and facts in Cold Case Cat and all the other Crazy Cat Lady mysteries.  Finally, here is a suggestion from Chapter 8: Can’t have your own cat? Volunteering at a cat shelter is a great way to get your kitty-fix and help the community at the same time.
