“Manticore,” I murmur. “He’s beautiful.”
“Do you need glasses, Sam?” Jake shakes his head.
“Well, he is,” I insist. “If you ignore that we have to fight him.”
“You’re right! Why didn’t I see that?” Jake flips a hand. “He’s kind of beautiful in a I’m going to tear you to pieces and chomp your limbs off kind of way.”
“Hello!” I say loudly. “We’re your friends!”
The manticore keeps walking and snarls at me.
“You do have a way with wild animals!” Jake winks at me.
“Shut up. We could die here you know.”
“Good point.”
The beast is a deformed Lesser which must have been away from KiraKu’s water and air too long—even longer than Biggie, given the mutation it went through. Lessers are the basis for all mythological creatures in human legends, but the ones we’ve met so far were able to talk with reason. This creature appears disturbed, with no visible vulnerabilities. Worse, I don’t want to kill it. It makes me even angrier at Kert.
Uncle Biggie calls in his singsong voice, “Be nice now, wittle kitty. All’s gonna be okay now.”
The manticore stops and snarls, wagging its head as if to shake Biggie’s soothing voice out of its ears. Several years ago I watched Uncle Biggie calm down a whole warehouse of nervous wild animals in minutes, so I’m hopeful.
