Twenty-one-year-old Natalia battles a rare parasomnia sleep
disorder that propels her to act violently, experience night terrors, and put
herself in dangerous situations—all while she’s unconscious.

.

After waking up covered in unexplained bruises, she lands herself back in a
mental facility. Making friends has never been easy, but at Awana, she quickly
bonds with her fun-loving roommate Lindsay and falls for Gabriel, a handsome
yet severely depressed resident she secretly meets at night.

As Natalia wrestles with the harsh side effects of her medication, her reality
unravels, exposing disturbing truths about those she trusts most. Though
romantic relationships are strictly forbidden at Awana, Gabriel becomes her
lifeline amidst the chaos. To be with him, Natalia must risk
everything—including her sanity, and she learns some choices carry devastating
consequences.

Filled with shocking twists, Same Place, Same Stars, is a psychological drama
that unpacks the many layers of what happens when dark secrets refuse to be
ignored.

CHAPTER 1

.

No sharp objects. Pack light.

.

My instinct is to run, but I don’t know how far my sore limbs will carry me.

.

Apathy is my last line of defense.

.

I reach for a baggy sweatshirt
and leggings. This has become my uniform when I go away, not for any fashion
statement but its functionality—it can be easily taken off before my body is
searched by a nurse’s gloved hands. The pressure from the fabric causes me to
hiss in pain. I carefully step each leg in to cover the tender scrapes and deep
purple bruises along my pale white shins and thighs. The bruises are a reminder
that I’ve messed up again.

.

I drag my worn leather suitcase
that’s on its last leg away from our cottage and into the trunk of Olga’s
station wagon. She doesn’t say a word as we head out of our driveway and onto
the tree-dense highway. The branches are grayer than normal, though it could be
my mood filtering the world in a cloud of indifference.

.

Olga rolls every window down even
though it’s a brisk fifty-two degrees. Long drives make her sweat. I think she
would never leave our small town if it were up to her, but I remain her forcing
agent.

.

My eyes wander from the pastures
filled with cows and horses to Olga and her wild blowing hair that is unusually
more silver than black for someone in their thirties.

.

“So, what’s this ward like?” I ask, trying to break the tense silence.

.

“Don’t call it that. That’s not what it’s called. This is a treatment center.”

.

She turns up her classical piano
playlist, the one she plays to calm her nerves, then hands me a folded piece of
stock paper filled with smiling faces of young adults—those who, like me, are
not teenagers anymore but not quite what I would consider adults either. Much
like our mental state, we’re something in between.

.

The brochure states this center
isn’t government funded. By the looks of it, it seems far out of the budget of
Olga’s ballet studio salary and my unemployed status, but it claims as part of
their philosophy that they take on special cases free of charge. Just my luck,
they happened to have room for a last-minute drop-in.

.

 After the stunt I pulled last night, I’m sure
Olga would be willing to pay any price.

Picture A Garden by Linda Hornberg
CategoryMiddle-Grade Non-Fiction (Ages 8-12), 160 pages
GenreChildren’s Non-Fiction.
Publisher: Peanut Butter Publishing
Publication Date: January 28, 2025.
Content Rating: G: Topics only include gardening and being outdoors.

Book Description:

What springs to mind when you hear the word GARDEN? Would it surprise you to learn that the world just outside your door is overflowing with art, science, humor, drama, intrigue, and colorful personalities? Nature has you surrounded. It’s time to come out with your hands gloved and your feet galoshed, ready to sow some spinach, pick a peony, mulch a maple, root a rose, graft a grape, stake a spruce, water a walnut, and hug a hemlock.

Set down your screens and take up your trowel.

Adventure awaits!

The stories inside this book are nearly all true. I have never actually seen a chorus line of worms decked out in feather boas, but I can guarantee that there are plenty of real-life larvae out there merrily chewing up the scenery. You can turn orange from eating too many carrots, and there really is a tiny plant island called a liverwart–although there probably are no tiny castaways living on it. Welcome to gardening for smarties. Never stop thinking, wondering, and digging, and you’ll never be bored. Have fun.

MY REVIEW

I don’t read near as many non-fiction books as I do fiction. When I do, it’s usually memoirs or such. That said, I was wowed by Picture A Garden.

I have a green thumb. I love feeling the soil between my fingers. The smell and feel of the plants and trees I tenderly care for. I’m always doing my due diligence. Learning what makes my flora grow. What they need to thrive or how to help them when they aren’t. This book not only taught me a lot, it also charmed me.

Linda used her own handwriting, filling the pages with fun details. And every page was filled colorful drawings. I loved that. She also made me laugh with the little stories she shared.

 I read some of this with my son. His middle grade years are well behind him. And this is targeted for that age group. He mentioned how much he enjoyed reading it with me but probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much when he was younger. There is a lot of detail and we agreed. It would have been better read as a family or by someone a bit older. That’s the only hitch with this wonderful book.

Picture A Garden has a permanent place on my book shelf. I want it in easy reach. Spring is coming and the time to get my hands dirty is almost here.

Her incessant doodling landed her at the Hartford Art School. She received her BFA in Printmaking from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Further formal studies led to classes in children’s illustration and certification in landscape horticulture.

In the Bluegrass world of oak-cured bourbon, antebellum mansions, and Thoroughbred horse farms are secrets—deadly secrets!

Josiah Reynolds knows this with good reason. She’s solved many a murder, but Josiah prays that she does not stumble across another body. The stress is too much, and she is happy to be invited to a winter sledding party at Haze Corbyn’s home. Corbyn is a former syndicated critic for newspapers and magazines, who retired to the Bluegrass, dabbling in his love of horses.

The party is a kickoff for the Victoria Weathers’ film retrospective at a local theater. Miss Weathers is even coming for the showing of her first movie and Corbyn’s event. Josiah is excited to meet her movie idol, so it comes as a big surprise when Haze Corbyn turns up dead at his own party.

Kentucky is not called “the dark and bloody ground” for nothing!

About Abigail Keam

Abigail Keam is an award-winning and Amazon best-selling author who writes the Josiah Reynolds Mystery Series about a Southern female beekeeper turned amateur sleuth living in the glamorous world of oak-cured bourbon, antebellum mansions, and Thoroughbred farms.

Besides loving history, Kentucky bourbon and chocolate, Abigail loves honeybees and for many years made her living by selling honey at a farmers’ market like her protagonist, Josiah Reynolds. She is an award-winning beekeeper who has won many honey awards at the Kentucky State Fair including the Barbara Horn Award, which is given to beekeepers who rate a perfect 100 in a honey competition.

Miss Abigail has taken her knowledge of beekeeping to create a fictional beekeeping protagonist, Josiah Reynolds, who solves murder mysteries in the Bluegrass. While Miss Abigail’s novels are for enjoyment, she discusses the importance of a local sustainable food economy and land management for honeybees and other creatures.

She currently lives on the Kentucky River in a metal house with her husband and various critters. She still has honeybees.

Finding His Wyoming Sweetheart

By Virginia McCullough

Genre: Sweet Western Romance

Synopsis

When it comes to his seven-year-old son, new lodge owner Mack Fisher has a lot to make up for. Fortunately, the small Wyoming town of Adelaide Creek provides the perfect fresh start—that is, if he can avoid the distraction of Erin Hunnicutt’s warm brown eyes. The free-spirited musician has a way of bringing out the best in everyone—especially Mack. When they’re thrown together unexpectedly to help their town, sparks fly and a dangerous secret is uncovered. But searching for the answers only leads them to fall deeper for one another…and starts Mack wondering if there’s room for one more in his new family.

~~~~~
Enjoy this peek inside:
Mack lowered his phone and wrapped Erin in a tight hug. “We did this together, along with your four-legged pal, Neptune.”
Neptune was standing next to Erin, as if waiting to be given a job. Erin stood on tiptoes, and put her hands on the side of Mack’s face and gave him a quick kiss.
Even in the dark his smile lit up his face. Then it disappeared when his phone buzzed.
“A text from Jeff?”
Mack nodded. “They plan to come in close to the gate, but without lights. They’ll cut the fence and walk in. They want these guys to stay calm.” Mack quickly keyed a response. “I reminded Jeff that these thieves are still teenagers.”
They turned their attention back to the corral, where the light from the headlights shone on a guy coming out of the barn. A horse by the fence hurried past him and out of sight under the shelter of the barn roof.
“Hurry, Jeff, hurry,” Mack muttered. Erin noted every move the men made. No matter how wrong and horrible the actions, the four thieves, whoever they were, had been taking care of the horses in their crude stable.
She kept her eyes on the scene below, conscious of Mack standing sitting beside her. She could feel the intense energy passing between them. She ran his words through her mind again. “Uh, Mack?”
“What is it?”
“In case I don’t get a chance to tell you later, I’m falling in love with you, too.” Erin smiled. There. She’d said the words out loud. No regrets.
Amateur sleuth and candle maker Tabby Winslow and her twin sister, Sage, are finally making a go of The Book and Candle Shop. It seems like the only heat they’ll feel this June is from the strong sunshine in Savannah, Georgia. Then their acquaintance Detective Sharmila Belfor is gravely injured in a vehicular assault and is in a coma. Cops turn the city upside down searching for the offender, keying in on the detective’s boyfriend Herbert R Ellis, her felon cousin, and her case files.
Fearing the police are looking at the wrong people, Herbert begs Tabby to investigate. He knows what most don’t, that Tabby has psychic abilities that allow her to home in on emotions and motives. Since he’s a lifelong friend of Dr. Quig Quigsly, Tabby’s fiancé, she agrees. But before she finds answers, Sage’s former coworker is murdered, and her twin pleads with Tabby to find the killer. With dead ends at every turn, Tabby fears the city’s troubles are paranormal in origin. By investigating the crimes, she risks exposure of the way her family manipulates energy and uses other psychic talents. Keeping a low profile is essential.
Meanwhile, Quig’s parents are throwing them a black-tie engagement party in two weeks, and Tabby is burning the candle at both ends. Can Tabby end the crime wave and protect her loved ones before she is quenched?
Can’t Help Falling In Love
by Mariah Ankenman
Publication date: February 13th 2025
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Growing up with three brothers, Charlie Jackson had to be tough. Some might call her the B word, but she simply defends those who need it. Unfortunately, not everyone sees her protection as defense. Like the judge who ordered her to take anger management classes after she messed up her jerk ex’s car. Not a problem, a few months pretending to listen to a bunch of people talk about accessing feelings should go down as smooth as the vodka her family makes at their distillery.
Luc Woolf knows all about harboring anger at the world. Growing up with a father who liked the bottle more than his family, he suffered his fair share of rage. But he gave up that emotion long ago when he realized anger did nothing but make a person miserable. These days, he keeps a cool head and helps others process their emotions as a therapist. However, when he volunteers to moderate an anger management course, he meets the one person who tests his careful control, Charlie Jackson.
The two couldn’t be more at odds, but they can’t deny the scorching heat between them. This bad girl wants to show this good boy how much fun breaking the rules can be. After all, opposites attract. But when the struggles of real life interrupt their fun times, will their differences pull them apart or bond them together?
Enjoy this peek inside:
Luc Woolf sat at the table, a smart-ass grin ticking up the corner of his mouth. “We have to stop meeting like this.”
The smooth, deep voice washed over her like silk. She would not laugh at his ridiculous attempt at humor. But damn it all, she felt the curve of her lips as a smile she couldn’t seem to stop, turned them up.
“Damn small towns.”
He chuckled. “I thought you owned a bar?”
“I do.”
“But you’re a server on the side?” He tilted his head. “There a large abolition following in Kismet I’m not aware of?”
“No. The distillery does great. So great in fact that we expanded into a restaurant. One of the servers had an emergency and needed her shift covered.”
Dark brows rose. “And the boss filled in?”
“We’re a family run establishment.” She shrugged. “It’s what you do when your family needs help. You help.”
Something passed through his eyes. Respect. She had no idea why, but it made a warm fuzzy feeling rise in her stomach. Luc seemed to understand and even applaud her actions of the evening. Stupid. She didn’t give a rat’s ass what he thought.
Then why was her heart suddenly racing?
“So,” he grabbed his menu again, breaking the moment. “What’s good here?”
“Everything. And I don’t just say that because I co-own the joint. Our chef is amazing. What do you like?”
“I’m not picky.”
He said that, but they were half an hour away from Denver. Hipster central. Trends took off like wildfire in the city and spread like the plague to the small tourists’ towns like Kismet. Currently they’d had to accommodate for everything from Paleo to gluten free patrons. She had no problem catering to a customer who had a food allergy, but she really hated the bandwagon eaters who fussed and complained because they were strictly gluten free and then ordered a piece of cheesecake with graham cracker crust.
“No allergies? No weird fad diets?”
“Do I look like I do fad diets?” He arched one eyebrow.
No, he did not. In fact, the man looked like he ate steel for breakfast and iron for dinner. A dark V-neck sweater clung tight to his chest revealing just a hint of chest hair. The sleeves were pushed up past his elbows, revealing tightly muscled forearms. Damn, had she ever found forearms sexy before? She did tonight.
“A meat and potatoes kind of guy?” Her mouth felt too dry. She swallowed, trying for the life of her to find some saliva. “Our steak is amazing, but if you prefer fish, we have a great salmon with dill sauce.”
He held the menu in his fingers, but his gaze focused on her. “It all sounds amazing.”
Her breath caught in her throat, brain blanking. How did this guy render her speechless with just a look? It wasn’t fair. No one should be that sexy.
“Um, yeah. It is.” Clever Charlie. “What can I bring you?”
He placed the menu at the edge of the table, eyes never leaving hers. “You pick.”
“What?”
“You own the place. You know what’s best. You pick something for me.”
Shaking herself out of whatever weird fog she’d been in, she laughed. “You want me to pick your meal.” He nodded. Licking her lips, she placed her hand on the table and leaned down. “How do you know I won’t poison you?”
He wasn’t exactly her favorite person, and she’d made no bones about it. He leaned toward her until they were inches apart. She could smell the sharp mint of his breath, feel its warmth on her lips and cheeks. Her blood began to heat, heart racing in her chest. This was ridiculous! She should not react this way to a man who’d done nothing but annoy the crap out of her since the moment she ran into him.
“You do need me to sign off on your anger management course. If I suddenly die after eating at an establishment you own it might look pretty sketchy to the judge,” he said the words in a teasing tone, the dimple in his cheek catching her eye at his wide grin.
Laughter bubbled out of her. “True. Plus, it’d be a shame to poison all that sexy.”
The moment the words left her mouth she wanted to shove them back in.
Surprise lifted his brow. “You think I’m sexy?”
Embarrassment flooded her, so she did what she always did when she felt insecure. She pushed away from the table, crossing her arms over her chest, and brought out her trademark sarcasm. “Don’t fish for compliments. You own a damn mirror.”
He grinned, leaning back in his chair. “You’re not so bad yourself, Charlie.”
DeeLo Myer, newly transplanted from Los Angeles to Pecan Point, Georgia, gets sentenced to forty hours of community service with the local humane society. She’s paired with the judgmental Catherine Foster, a Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) guru who prefers feral cats to people. During DeeLo’s first night on duty, she and Catherine are led by a cat to the strangled body of a local bookstore owner.
The cop who investigates seems less concerned with solving a homicide than with Catherine’s violation of an antiquated animal ordinance rendering TNVR illegal. The following evening, when he arrests Catherine for violating the said ordinance, and then holds her as a suspect in the murder, DeeLo vows to prove Catherine’s innocence and get the ridiculous law changed. How hard could it be? She enlists her boyfriend/boss and the resources of his law office. Her quest for justice and legislative change leads her to high-profile members of the community, some of whom have motives for murder.
