This is a special day. Not only will I be reviewing ZED by Stehen Herfst, he has also graciously accepted my invitation for an interview.

My review:

First let me give you a brief synopsis from Goodreads.

The story revolves around a teenage girl’s promise to save Zed from the human hordes.

Zed is not your typical zombie. He is cursed with the affliction of thought…although he tries to make the best of a bad situation. The goals for his unrest are simple: to improve his stride, to taste a lightly-seared pork loin once again and avoid Activists at all costs.

His life was predictable, controlled and good until chaos crashed the party. In just one day his world is destroyed and his ability to survive is tested. Would he be able to get through this in one piece? And would he somehow be able to survive the unstoppable force that goes by the name of Chase?

I am at a loss to describe how much I enjoyed this book. I did a blog post just about getting ready to review it, and then I reread it so that Zed would be fresh in my mind. So much is wanting to be said.

Imagine being the only zombie that can think. Do you belong with other zombies, or should you avoid them? You would have to wonder, why me? Why  am I the only one, and where do I belong?

Zed chooses a life of seclusion, away from zombies and humans alike. That is until one eventful night when he encounters Chase. Thrown together by chance, they stay together to survive. There is danger for a young girl in these times, especially one traveling alone. Not to mention the human horde that wants to kill and mount all zombies they come across. Maybe, if they work together, Chase and Zed can make it to a safe zone and live their lives in peace.

I am still struggling to tell you about this story. It is much more than the gratuitous zombies eating people scenes, which there are some doozies. It is also funny, like when Zed goes to the maul.  And Chase, man is she a firecracker. She provides the spark and sets this book on fire. You can not help but love her.

Let me tell you, this book is an amazing read. There are so many ups and downs, spins and teeth-clenching thrills inside. It is unlike any other zombie book you have read and you should not miss out. Get Zed and get reading. I hear there are two more books to come.

I gave this 5 STARS and then some.

Now I have a special treat for you. Today I was supposed to be interviewing Stephen Herfst. Alas, he was unable to attend, so he sent Zed in his stead.

To those of you who have not met Zed, Stephen has written a whole book about him. The book is called ZED.

Now, Zed is a zombie and we all know they don’t like to be kept waiting, so I better get to the interview. I have had to change the questions a bit to accommodate Zed, and I was told not to interject while he was commenting.

Would you prefer eating brains from a man or a woman?

Hmm…it would be relative to what I am in the mood for; the flavour of a woman’s brain is intense, sweet and decidedly complex with hidden nuances that require my full attention. A man’s brain is musky, with a strong flavour that underlies the overall demeanor of the host. Of course, certain nationalities would result in some differences, for example, Italians/Spanish are prone to irrational bursts of flavour.

Could you describe what brains taste like?

First of all, the texture deserves some focus: a combination I would best describe as between broiled cauliflower and pate. A pert outer-shell that gives way to a smooth creamy centre. The flavour of the brain is subtle, and its most basic flavour tastes similar to pureed fatty chicken bathed in a brine of embryonic fluid. The flavour is also influenced by the hosts’ diet, with a wine-favouring host being the most delectable. I do like a good red wine marinade.

Would you date another zombie?

If the right female zombie came along…maybe. I take a pride in my appearance and so my partner would need to follow suit. There is a certain predictability to the female of my species, and so, they simply require no more than the offering of some human flesh to win their heart. It is true what they say about the way to one’s heart.

Do you want to remember who you were before?

It does irritate that the information does not come to me. All of my knowledge I have gained since my rebirth. Sometimes something triggers what might be a glimpse into what I think is the past. I am not sure but I have time so, when it happens, it will be one more thing that I can tick off my list.

What pet would you prefer?

I already have many pets. My books are house-trained, silent and speak to me when prompted and they can be silenced just as easily.

Do you floss?

Yes. Personal hygiene is important. I certainly would not want to suffer from gingivitis(or gum-disease)- certainly  do not want to exacerbate any additional flesh rot.

Where would you like to live?

Wherever I can be left to my own devices. Humans are a troublesome horde, always wanting to kill me, mount me, or worse, rescue me. It irritates me that they would somehow think my present situation would require rescuing.

If you were like most zombies that can only mutter brains and could say something else, what would you say?

I have to admit, I do use the classic call of brains when enticing my antagonists into one of my traps. I believe it is best to play to expectation until their realisation comes too late. Alternatively, I prefer saying nothing. Why would you want your prey knowing ahead of time of their impending doom, anyway?

Now, I think I have answered more than enough questions. It is a good thing that I am in a good mood(and do not have my Zombie Kit with me). You caught me at a moment of weakness…and I do not like it. Now be off before I find reason to change my mind…zombies are known for that, after all.

Well, I beat a hasty exit, glad to still be one piece. My thanks to Zed for being so obliging and to Stephen for allowing this interview.

Since Stephen could not make it today, here is a little bit about him.

If I had to define myself in a few words, it would be:

“Reserved, outgoing, thinking, reflective, driven, lazy, observant, competitive, confident, doubtful.”

Depending on my mood, the topic and the people around me, I can be many things. When I began life I wanted to be a programmer but now I just want to be independent. I am always open to trying new things and have always made it a habit of doing things I haven’t done before.

I was born in Germany, from Dutch-South African descent and live in Australia although I’m currently working in California and my family lives in Malaysia. I don’t believe that I can define one country as my home and hope to travel the rest of my life.

I am a Software Engineer by trade but have always loved books. During my early years I would read 5-10 books every two weeks and have always had a fertile imagination. My world was novels but in later years I find it harder to spare the time. I have always had side projects along-side my formal work and have always wanted to write but haven’t found a topic that has interested me until now.

I released my first novel on February 18. It took one month to write, followed by three months of editing. I am proud of this novel, although I am not yet finished. I have two more novels to write in this series, as well as a number of pet projects in the works that I feel “have legs”.

My hobbies include Tennis, Squash, Texas Hold’em, Restaurants(yes, that’s a hobby), watching good movies and reading good books.

I am staying tuned for more about Zed and am curious about those “legs”.

Finger Peeking Good

I recently had the pleasure of reading The Emerald Quest: A Noah Winter YA Adventure Series by Renee Pawlish. I enjoyed her writing so much that I went on and read some more of her books.

My review today is a double-feature from her Reed Ferguson Mystery Series.

I really like the cover art for this book. Once you read it you will see that it compliments the story and her writing style.

Now, about the book.

Book blurb from Goodreads

A wannabe private eye with a love of film noir and detective fiction.

A rich, attractive femme fatale.

A missing husband.

A rollicking ride to a dark and daring ending.

This description says it all, but I would like to talk more about this book.

It starts off with a bang!

“I want you to find my dead husband.:

“Excuse me?” That was my first reaction.

“I want you to find my husband. He’s dead, and I need to know where he is.” She spoke in a voice one sexy note below middle C.

“Uh-huh.” That was my second reaction. Really slick.

Renee’s writing style reads like a noir film. Like a Bogie movie. It is no surprise that Reed Ferguson, main character and a P.I. in this story, is a fan of Bogie. He prefers old movies, especially detective film noir, and dark women.

When Amanda first walked in to his office and blurted out her request his first thought was “Trouble”. She was a flirt and he tried not to mix business with pleasure, never a good idea and always complicated things.

The cast of characters is diverse and compliment the story well. Honorable mentions for brothers Ace and Deuce. Funny and endearing, their back and forth banter adds a lighter note to the tale. Cal. Get a picture of Sherlock Holmes in your head. Got it? That is Cal. He’s Reed’s friend and sidekick , helping unravel the dirty little secrets in his investigations.

Like all good mysteries, there are plots within plots and lots of twists and turns. Reed does not escape this without being battered and bloody. Despite all of the warnings to drop the investigation, Reed persists and ends up in a world of hurt.

My body was screaming at me, sore in too many places to count. “I feel light-headed.” I blinked hard at Forbes.

“Hey, buddy, you’re bleeding.”

I began examining myself, but didn’t see anything.

“No, back there.”

I craned my neck around, exploring my backside with my hands. “Oh, man? She shot me in the ass?” I couldn’t believe it, but it was true. My rear end suddenly hurt like nobody’s business.

Agent Forbes tried to hide a smile. And then I fainted.

Witty sarcasm and sexual tension ooze from the pages. This looks and smells like the  Alfred Hitchcock and Sherlock Holmes movies.

I ate it up and immediately moved on to the second Ferguson Mystery

Another great cover right? They are perfect for these stories.

Goodreads description

Lights! Camera! Read!

That’s right – Reed Ferguson, the intrepid hero of This Doesn’t Happen In The Movies, is back.

A mysterious death.

A brother searching for the truth.

A devious ex-wife.

Real estate shenanigans.

More danger for Reed than a film noir plot.

Reed was all ready to start his weekend. Gonna hang with his buddies and relax.

His plans change when Jack Healy introduces himself. He wants to hire Reed to find his brothers killer or killers.

After listening to the request from Jack, Reed’s response is “I’ll take it.”

There are the usual questions.

Why would anyone want to kill his brother?

Did he have any enemies?

What about the ex-wife?

Any trouble with the law?

I was led through the investigation, step by step, and my interest never wavered.

Ace and Deuce, the Goofball brothers are back to play their role of comic relief. Of course Cal is busy helping Reed dig up the dirt,  sparring words with him. They add seasoning to this well written mystery.

Aah, there is maybe a love interest for Reed. The new neighbor, the sultry voiced Willie, has caught Reed’s eye and he is crushing on her in a big way. His advances are gently rebuffed, she keeps it friendship only. Her reasoning is understandable and hard to argue.”

“Reed, I like you. A lot. Even before I broke up with Alan, I was tempted to go out with you. But you want to know why I won’t?”

“Because you need time to get over Alan?”

She shook her head. “That’s only part of the reason. I don’t want to get involved with you and then find out that you’ve been hurt or killed.”

“C’mon. I got shot in the rear as I was diving to the floor.”

“But it could’ve been any number of things,” Willie pointed out. “I’ve seen it happen before. You were lucky it was only your ass.”

He may have to work a little harder on this.

Reed is a man’s man. His enthusiasm and sarcastic humor is contagious, it reaches out and grabs you. There is a lighter side to him also. He is still a little boy in his mother’s eyes.

His mother is a real card:

“Hello, dear.” My mother’s high-pitched voice carried over the phone lines like a parrot on cocaine. “You sound groggy. Why is it every time I call, you’re asleep? Does this have something to do with that detective work? Are you on drugs? Paul.” she yelled away from the phone. “your son’s on drugs, I just know it.”

Sound like anyone you know?

The investigation gets serious. Events start steam-rolling. The s-curves of the case keep it interesting and exciting. Jump on the speeding train and hang on tight.

Thanks, Renee, for a well written and thought out story.

Great ending. Everything is gift-wrapped with a bow on top.  It is a pleasure all the way and I am left sated, with a smile on my face.

I do wonder what will happen with Reed and Willie though.

5 STARS for both books. Each can stand alone, but it is so great to be able to keep reading about my new friends.

I’ve been chromed! How cool is this?

Pretty isn’t it? I wanted you to see it in all its awesomeness. I think that’s a word. I want to send a huge thank you to Roberta Gordon from over at geminiwitching.com for nominating me. She is one of the first people I followed on twitter and as such, she helped me get here!  Thank you for this honor Roberta. It means a lot to me.

I really like Roberta’s questions from Maureen at zencherry.com and will use them.

Here we go!

1. What was your favorite food when you were a child?

I loved pizza and those pixie straws. Remember them?

2. What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod?

You may laugh at this, Under The Boardwalk by The Drifters.

3. What is one of your favorite Quotes?

Not sure who said it, “If you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything”.

4. If you knew the world was ending in 2012, what would you do differently?

I would gather my family close.

5. If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?

That’s easy, my mother. She is my mentor, my best friend and an angel on this earth:)

6. If you could witness any event – past, present, or future, what would it be?

Hmmm, I would like to see if we really do travel to other universes in the future. It would be fun to see if there are aliens out there.

7. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I would like to learn to fly an airplane. It would be so cool to be up in the sky.

8. If you had to work only one project for the next year, what would it be?

It would be to get my son to face the world. He has an anxiety disorder that prevents him from interacting with others. I would love for him to enjoy life more.

9. If you were immortal for a day, what would you do?

That’s easy. I would dive down to the deepest parts of the ocean and observe all of the wonderous marine life. Maybe I would run into some hidden aliens.

10. When was the last time you had an amazing meal?

Two weeks ago. I discovered this quaint little diner that featured homestyle cooking and everything tasted so similar to my mothers cooking.

11. If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you want to meet?

John Wayne! Since I was a teenager, I loved him. Had a dream once where we got married. I was so disappointed when I woke up:D

That was so fun! You are allowed to laugh at my answers. I am probably showing my age!

“Taken” Away!

Posted: June 1, 2012 in Uncategorized

Charlotte Abel did it again. She blew me away with Taken! The sequel to Enchantment picks right up where she left off and continues to delight me.  All of my favorite characters are back to thrill me again.

Taken (Channie, #2)

A mild spoiler alert if you have not read Enchantment, Book One in the YA Paranormal Romance.

“Bound by love and magic. Betrayed by those they trust. Not everyone survives.”

“Gasp-out-loud action, heart-pounding romance and an OMG ending that leaves you hungry for the next book.”

Josh and Channie are back and more in love than ever. They are keeping busy turning their little shack into a home. Still in hiding from Dominance, they try to stay hidden at the secret training camp. There is still a price on Channies head and her own mother, whom I loathe, would sacrifice her to save her own skin. All because of a blood vengeance against her father.

Josh is in magical training to learn how to control his curses in order to protect Channie.  He is reluctant to curse anything as it can be disastrous.
Aunt Wisdom finally spoke up and said, “Josh, you’re a married man. You need to prove you’re man enough to protect your wife.”
Josh jerked his head towards Aunt Wisdom and glared at her, “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
Aunt Wisdom just stood there, arms folded across her chest, and stared at josh. Hunter said, “I think it means you need to kill something.”
Josh’s energy spiked again. “How about I start with you.”

I think there is still some jealousy there between Josh and Hunter.
The training  scenes are intense and had me holding my breath. There is a lot of tension between the two men and I fear Josh will lose control of his curses.

The emotional upheaval between Channie and Josh is exciting, intense and funny all at once. Forbidden to be physically joined until Josh is fully recovered from his illness, they are really struggling to obey Aunt Wisdom’s orders and keep their intimate  encounters to kissing and snuggling.
I really liked this scene.

Channie took his sweater in her hands and then leaned over and sniffed cautiously. It didn’t just smell good. it smelled like lemons and sandalwood and Josh.
She closed her eyes, pressed the cloud of wooly fabric against her face and drank in his scent. When she opened her eyes, Josh was staring at her. He looked like something out of a dream, bathed in the moonlight, bare chest heaving with every breath. A stretching sensation deep inside her own chest ached. This hunger was more than lust. It was a physical need as real as the urge to breath.

Charlotte’s writing allows,  no, it makes you  feel the aching longing between these young lovers. You feel the intense, physical yearning between them.

Taken really takes off. There are plenty of adrenaline pumping action scenes and lots of new characters laced through the story, adding depth while not slowing down the story.
There are plenty of secrets and Channie’s family is still a mess. The trips are getting older and their antics made me laugh out loud. I like the new power names that are introduced and how they compliment the new characters.
The ending is heart-wrenching but encouraging. You will find you have no choice – you will have to read the third and final book in this series. it will be available September 2012.

5 STARS and a huge Thank You to Charlotte Abel for this wonderful sequel.
