Visions by Laura N. Anile
Publication date: September 26th 2013
Genres: Adult, Paranormal
Synopsis:

What would you sacrifice to save a stranger?
Isabel Cartier is career-driven and a little self-obsessed. Her future has been carefully planned—until something mysterious happens. When Isabel begins to experience premonitions of strangers in potentially life-threatening situations, she must decide what she is willing to do—and sacrifice—in order to save the people in her visions.
As her premonitions progress, the level of risk to her own life escalates, and she’s thrown into an unknown world that will put more than just her career in jeopardy.
It is only when her life spins out of control that she is able to take chances that she never thought possible—including opening her heart to love.
There’s Matt, the handsome stranger she saves from a terrible accident. But will she ever see him again? Then there’s Jeremy, her thoughtful neighbor who’s down on his luck. Both will shape her path and leave her breathless. But it’s another man, who she sees in her visions over and over again, who will leave her questioning everything. Does he have nine lives, or is it up to Isabel to figure out the parameters of a game she doesn’t quite understand in order to truly save him?
Visions follows Isabel’s journey to find out if she has the courage she needs to save the people in her premonitions, and how, ultimately, their lives are intertwined with hers.

I have an exciting excerpt for ya’ll. Enjoy!

“I’ve been monopolizing a lot of your time lately, haven’t I?”

“I’ve wanted you to monopolize me,” he said in a low voice, his salacious grin adding heat to his eyes.

I felt my cheeks warm as I took his hand to lead him in. “Are you staying tonight?”

“I thought you’d never ask.”

“Do you have plans tomorrow night?”

“What do you have in mind?” he asked in the same suggestive tone.

“Whatever you want,” I played along.

“Really? Well that could be dangerous,” he breathed mischievously. “What time will you make yourself available to do whatever I want?”

I giggled at his devilish grin. “Eight?”

“Eight is perfect.”

“So what exactly do you have in mind?” I asked coyly.

“Be at my place at eight. The rest of the evening will be a surprise.” He paused, cocking his head. “Anything goes,” he teased, a dangerous glint in his eye.

“Okay. I’m looking forward to it. I think.”

“Not as much as I am, my slave girl,” he chuckled, his brows dancing.

“Slave girl? You’re starting to make me nervous…I don’t want to re-enact Fifty Shades of Grey, if that’s what you’re thinking?”

His laugh didn’t subdue my nerves—there was something devious in it.

I knew I wasn’t getting any more out of him; whatever he had planned, he wasn’t giving it away. Given I’d only just discovered his cooking skills, I hoped he’d be flaunting his domestic capabilities again. But the heat in his eyes led me to believe it was something else he had in mind. I was a little nervous, but flushed with eager anticipation. Whatever was on the evening agenda, I knew I was in good hands. Warm, masterful hands…

I snuggled closer to him and breathed in his familiar scent.

“I might give you a preview,” he murmured in my ear, his voice deepening as he tugged me to the bedroom and pulled me onto the bed. A wave of heat immediately ignited within me and my hands found their way under his clothes. The feel of his skin against mine, his body moving with mine, took my breath away.

Later, I fell asleep in his arms, my last thoughts of the unbridled anticipation of whatever he had in store for the following evening.

It started as it usually did. Me looking down at the multiple-choice test with his hand on my shoulder. But then the scene shifted and I was no longer in the exam room looking at a piece of paper. A piece of paper couldn’t physically hurt me; what was now in front of me could. Absolutely terrified, I dared to take a glimpse at the man holding the gun. He was dressed all in black, wearing a riding jacket over a T-shirt and jeans. His face was completely obscured by the black helmet he wore. I glanced behind him and saw my terror reflected back at me in the eyes of the woman behind the teller. There were four other people in the bank, besides the three tellers. A woman, with a young girl who appeared to be between ten and twelve, and two men. One of the men looked to be in his forties, and wore a navy suit with a gold tie. The other was in a black suit with his back to me.

The young girl began screaming; a scream that made your blood run cold. Her mother instantly tried to placate her, eventually smothering her mouth when those attempts failed. That only intensified the screaming, agitating the girl more.

The gunman flew into a rage, demanding the girl be silenced before he silenced her. His hand twitched in fury. Could he honestly harm a child? I wondered, as fear crashed over me. The interminable screaming shrilled through the bank as the girl thrashed in her mother’s arms. My skin tingled, the air electrified with trepidation.

The gunman pointed the weapon directly at the child, narrowing his eyes. Time slowed down, like someone hit pause.

A feeling of complete and utter helplessness reverberated through me as I frantically scanned the room, searching for some kind of help to magically materialize.

A number suddenly flickered in my vision, flashing like a number on a screen: 12.19. I blinked; it felt like a camera flash had just gone off in my eyes. Then I noticed the calendar. All I saw was Thursday before the scene began to move once more, still in slow motion. My attention instantly returned to the gunman. His finger inched towards the trigger. His whole body was shaking.

Panic crippled me. This was it and I had no idea what to do.

A growl erupted from the gunman’s throat as his feeble control shattered and his finger pulled back the trigger.

There was no time left to decide, to think. There was only time to act. Instinctively, I jumped in front of the young girl as I heard the deafening crack of the gun being fired.

I jumped so violently that I awoke, drenched in sweat.

I love it when the author writes these short back stories. You get to see behind the scenes and find out about secondary characters that stuck with you.

In my case I am meeting these characters for the first time. I began reading the As The World Dies Series after I read these.

I have to hand it to Rhiannon Frater. She got me addicted to her world and I didn’t just want to read more, I had to! These stories are like Lays potato chips. You can’t read just one.

Synopsis Volume 1:

THE FIRST DAYS: AS THE WORLD DIES introduced Jenni and Katie and their harrowing journey to the makeshift fort in the Texas Hill Country. But theirs is not the only tale to be told. In the first volume of the AS THE WORLD DIES UNTOLD TALES experience three terrifying tales of those who are forced to face the unrelenting and hungry walking dead.
Deep in the Texas Hill Country, a man and his little dog takes refuge in a bed and breakfast located in the hills above a doomed town where an infested rescue center might unleash the hungry undead…
On a deserted highway slicing through the desolation of West Texas, a woman struggles to survive as she faces the horrifying aftermath of the rise of the zombies…
And finally, discover what happens on the first day to Katie’s beloved wife, Lydia, as the world dies…

.

My Review

For those of you who haven’t read the As The World Dies Trilogy or even volume one, The First Days, never fear. These three tales only tell us a small part of what is occurring  in The First Days and mainly focuses on a few characters, spotlighting them and giving them their due.

The Broken Heart (Lydia’s Story)

Lydia, Katie’s wife, is already dead in the beginning of the series, but even in death she steals the hearts of fans. This is her story.

It’s a perfect dawn and Lydia is enjoying her morning tea, letting Katie sleep in. Screams from across the lake interrupt the quiet, giving her the willies. But as they don’t continue she puts it from her mind. She doesn’t know it yet, but this will be the last normal morning they share.

This is in the beginning, before the world dies and zombies are everywhere.

The companionship and closeness of these two really made me smile. I knew the outcome wasn’t going to be rosy, but I enjoyed getting to know Katie and Lydia and was so wrapped up in their story I forgot for a while that this was going to end badly. Such is the excellent writing of Rhiannon Frater. My first taste of it and craving more.

Dangerous Highways (Monica’s Story)

This short story takes place between The First Days and Fighting To Survive.

Monica is alone now. She manages to escape El Paso thanks to her dead boyfriends pistol and trusty monster truck. She keeps an eye on the undead kids in the station wagon as she siphons gas to put in her tank.

She’s leaving the memory of his death behind her, like a dust plume behind the truck. Heading to her home town of Ashley Oaks, Texas and her cousin Juan.

She doesn’t know if the town is overrun or even still standing but that’s her plan. She knows how to kill the zombies thanks to all of the movies she’s watched. But that doesn’t make it any easier. It’s a whole other ball game when you come face to face with the unbelievable in real life.

And zombies aren’t the only thing she has to fear. As a woman traveling alone, Monica knows full well the dangers of encountering strangers.

I really like Monica. She’s rough and tough, takes care of business, and makes hard decisions with no hesitation. I could only hope to be half as tough as her.

The Vacation of the Undead (Eric’s Story)

This a quite a bit longer than the first two tales.

Eric is staying at a bed and breakfast with his supermodel girlfriend, Brandy, and his best friend, Pepe, a Jack Russell Terrier.

Eric is wondering if he’s really in love with Brandy, or in love with the idea of her. She’s excellent eye candy on his arm, but she’s not really a nice person. Her true colors come out when the apocalypse begins.

Eric may come across as a bit of a nerd, but he’s smart and has a big heart. He’s also a dog lover and Pepe will steal your heart. Whenever a pet is introduced into a story, it becomes more real to me. It’s strange that we become so upset if harm comes to an animal, and take it in stride sometimes when it’s a human. I guess it’s their innocence and trust that does it.

I would like stories with animals in them to start with a disclaimer: No animals were harmed in the writing of this story. I’m not spoiling it when I say Pepe’s tail is still wagging, as he appears in The First Days and Fighting To Survive.

Rhiannon’s characters are brought to life and fleshed out in these three untold tales and reading these in no way spoiled it for me as I haven’t read the series YET.

I got to know them, like or dislike them, fear for them and cheer for them. Now that I’ve experienced the author’s writing, been sucked into her world, I have to know more. Have to know everything.

Synopsis Volume 2:
.
THE FIRST DAYS: AS THE WORLD DIES introduced Jenni and Katie and their harrowing journey to the makeshift fort in the Texas Hill Country. FIGHTING TO SURVIVE: AS THE WORLD DIES continued their story as the two women joined the members of the makeshift fort in Ashley Oaks in the fight for survival against not only zombies, but the evil designs of bandits.
But theirs is not the only tale to be told.
In the second volume of the AS THE WORLD DIES UNTOLD TALES experience three terrifying tales of those who are forced to face the unrelenting and hungry walking dead.
In a nearby town Ken and Lenore have started their regular routine at Ken’s Beauty Salon. A terrible accident brings the undead plague to their front door and soon the best friends are scrambling to escape their overrun town…
Katarina is just finishing her shift at a roadside café when a badly injured man stumbles through the front door. She quickly realizes that to survive she must learn to kill…
And finally, a trapped family must face the fearsome truth that sometimes zombies are not the worst monster they have to fear as the world dies…
.
My Review
.
The characters in these three untold tales are all in Siege, the third book in the As The World Dies Series. These are their stories.
Revelation (Katarina’s Story)
.
Katarina has been in this series from the beginning. This is her story about her first day.
Her story isn’t pretty. The only reason she was even conceived was to grow up and take care of her parents. Her father’s dead now and she’s earning money waitressing at a truck stop in Ashley Oaks, Texas to take care of her sick mother. She doesn’t mind the job though. She’s earning her own money and it gets out of the house.
Dealing with that jerk, Randall, and his wandering hands becomes nothing when the bloodied man stumbles into the cafe, changing her life forever.
Even though Katarina let her mother dominate her, she never appeared weak to me. I felt she was just waiting for something, for an opportunity to come her way, and then she’d discover herself and really shine.
She did discover something. She can kill when she has to, and she’s good at it.
.
A Terrible Moment (The Unknown Story)
.
All of the stories in The Untold Tales have dark moments. This is darker than most and introduces you to peripheral characters. Not all of them make it and are their own worst enemies.
Debbie is a jealous bitter woman, beaten down by it all. She’s certain her husband is having an affair with his secretary and her jealousy consumes her.
It festers as they are all trapped in the warehouse together. She’s so focused on her thoughts of revenge, she doesn’t even care about her children.
This was an uncomfortable story. I can’t imagined being so self involved as to neglect my children, putting them in danger, and not caring. I was mortified at what she did.
Debbie would be the first one to throw out of the boat if adrift in the sea.
.
Friendship in the Time of Zombies (Ken and Lenore’s Story)
.
Lenore has no way of knowing that today will changer her life forever. She drags herself out of bed and wanders into the kitchen. Her grandmother has cooked breakfast and, as usual, she’s cooked enough to feed an army. Grabbing a quick bite, she heads off to work at Ken’s Diva Beauty Shop.
Ken may be her boss, but they are best friends and thick as thieves.
I just loved these two. Lenore is a moody one but Ken is bubbly, like champagne.
A small Texas town might not seem like the best place to flaunt his gayness, but Ken could charm the devil and I loved how he needed Lenore as much as she needed him. He was the comic relief for me and I could clearly see him cringing and panicking.
Lenore was something else. She not only had to figure out how to get them both out of there alive, she also had to keep bolstering Ken up, pushing him to man up.
I couldn’t get enough of these two and look forward to encountering them again.

Synopsis Volume 3:
.
In the third volume of the AS THE WORLD DIES UNTOLD TALES experience three terrifying tales of those who are forced to face the unrelenting and hungry walking dead.
Returning to Texas after celebrating his divorce in Vegas, Rune, a biker cursed with the ability to see ghosts, discovers that the world is being taken over by the hungry undead. Soon he realizes he will have to depend on all his abilities to survive not only the ravenous zombies, but the dangerous men lurking on the back roads of Texas.
Senator Paige Brightman abandoned the Madison Mall and its inhabitants to the hungry hordes, but her journey did not end there. Her attempt to reach the president’s safe haven called Central has far reaching ramifications for her and the people she abandoned.
The final in the three stories reveals the aftermath of the great battle in SIEGE as one woman faces the ultimate decision whether to live or die in a world of the undead.
.
My Review
.
All of the characters in these Untold Tales appear in Siege, the third and final book in the series.
.
The Backroads of Zombie Hell (Rune’s Story)
.
Now Rune won me over right from the beginning. He brings a spiritual aspect to the story. What happens to the souls of the dead once they become zombies?
He’s a loner until a ghost tells him it’s time to get moving. There’s somewhere he needs to be.
This is where a lot of the characters bump into each other from other Untold Tales.
Rune may look and act like your typical biker. He’s got a mean streak and you don’t want to mess with him.  But he’s also intuitive, guided by spirits, and a really decent guy. It would be good to have him on your side.
The opening scene was deep. The ghost waking him from his drunken stupor is none other than his daughter. I was almost in tears at this sad, gentle moment. I could see how it would be easy to hide away in the hills, isolating oneself from people and drowning your sorrows in booze. Rune lost everyone. But when somethings needs doing, he’s your man.
.
The Wickedest Woman in Texas (Paige’s Story)
.
It seems there’s always someone who has their own agenda. Someone you just want to b#!ch slap.
In walks Senator Paige Brightman, wicked witch of the apocalypse.
Some people have blinders on and can’t seem to grasp that the world is different, their lives are forever changed, and they try to go about business as usual.
Paige is one of those people. She still thinks her position matters, that what she thinks matters.
Paige needs to get with the program. Her life isn’t any more important than another’s, and her flippant view of collateral damage just may leave her all alone.
I enjoyed having someone to despise, some one to offer up to the zombies. The author does an excellent job of making me feel just that.
.
Are the Dead Walking The Earth (Emma’s Story)
.
Emma never made it into the As The World Dies series. You’ll only read her story here.
Emma’s story goes beyond the end of the series and shows the aftermath. She shows this to you while telling the story to her two young children.
I think this one hit me the hardest. Rhiannon expertly showed me some disturbing, heart wrenching scenes. I almost wish I could have shut my eyes at times, they were so vivid.
I agree, Emma’s story needed to be told. This may be labeled a zombie apocalypse series, but it’s really a story about people. Everyday people dealing without the end of their worlds, and the beginning of hell on Earth.
I was reduced to tears in the end. It hurt when I cried. I can only imagine how Emma felt.

.
At first I was worried it might not be a good idea to read these untold tales before I read the full novels.
I’m glad I did. Now, when I read the series, which I’m starting now, I’ll recognize these characters, know their back stories, and connect with them instantly.
Reading these first did not spoil anything for me. If anything, it made me want to read this series even more.
If you’re as big a fan of The Walking Dead television series, as I am, you’ll love these Untold Tales.
Thanks to the show ,I immersed myself in this collection. I felt, saw, heard, and, not recommended, smelled everything. It was like each scene played out in my mind. I even had faces for some of the characters.
The author’s choice of titles for each chapter were fun. It gave me an inkling of what I was in for and some of them brought forth an impish grin.
What I enjoyed most about these tales was how each novella had a connection to the others in it. Characters from one tale brush up against each other in other tales, showing different views of the same scenes. I’ve never run into that before and every time a character from one story appeared in another, I was glad to see them.
As I can’t wait to see each new episode of The Walking Dead, I also can’t wait to read more of the As The World Dies Series. I just wish it didn’t have to end!

As each collection got 5 STARS from me, it would be great if I could give the complete collection 15 STARS. As it doesn’t work that way, I give them an overall rating of 5 STARS. Take a bow Rhiannon. Your Untold Tales rock!

Book Description:

Sheri spends her days fighting zombies and her nights chained to a wall, earning her every breath by telling stories to her captor Aleksy—stories that make them both forget the ruined world. Sheri could put up with the conditions—at least she knows her sister is safe in the community Aleksy leads—until she realizes she’s falling for him…even though he wants her dead.

When Aleksy allowed Sheri and her sister into his compound, he didn’t know about the zombie bite on her back. It’s only a matter of time before she turns into one of the rising dead and threatens their existence, but Aleksy has a secret need for Sheri and her stories. For everyone’s safety, he chains her to his bedroom wall, hoping for just one more day. But how long will the community allow Aleksy to ignore his own rule: always kill the infected. Always.

Excerpt:

“He had meant to go straight to the basin to wash, but instead he stood watching the woman sleep. Did she dream? The coppery hair covering her face likely concealed shallow fever-dreams of blood and slaughter, but the arm curled defensively around her head made her seem vulnerable—a captive no older than her teenaged sister. Rays from the sun reached in through the window, and where they touched her skin a blush rose to the surface, pulsing as though kindled from within. Her dressing-gown had fallen open. Aleksy’s eye was held by the way her breasts pushed against the severe under wiring of her bra.

On her, it didn’t look pre-packaged. The charcoal-grey cups matched the high waisted briefs she wore; the cotton bunched a little where one thigh had slipped over the other. Only when her finger twitched and she resettled her head on her arm did he find the self-discipline to shut his eyes and turn away.”

Guest Post:

Fairytales, Zombies and Romantic BDSM

Hello, hello. I’m the author of One Thousand and One Nights, soon to be published by the Ever After line of Entangled. I live in South Africa, which is a country, and I write and review fiction while studying law.

1001 Nights adapts and retells the story of Scheherazade, the mythical Persian queen who escaped beheading at the hands of her jilted, homicidal husband Shahryar (in Persian, “king”) by telling him bedtime stories. In his original form, Shahryar inspires about as much empathy as Ted Bundy. Surrounded by man-eating corpses, protecting his own tiny island of the living, Aleksy (in Greek/Polish, “defender of mankind”) was my attempt to salvage the King from his misogynistic past. He hates and fears his Scheherazade, Sheri, because she’s tainted by a zombie-bite, but still human. The feeling of just subsisting from day to day translates well to an updated version: Aleksy tries to keep going in a world that’s betrayed him, and Sheri lives with the constant fear of death and undeath.

I first called it One Thousand and One Corpses, but the publisher wanted more romance, less out-and-out horror. I also gave it a subtitle, Sheri and the King, which probably tells you more about my upbringing on Broadway musicals than you wanted to know. I balance that out with a zombie obsession that gave me chills all the way through Max Brooks’ World War Z. In fact, I’d pay to watch a zombie musical, preferably written and directed by Richard O’Brien. It’d take about twenty years for a decent production to find its way to Cape Town, South Africa, but I’ll fund the Kickstarter campaign and wait.

Doing research for this story was a pleasure. I read the tales of Sinbad, explored the different translations and took a closer look at some traditional fairytales. These stories and their Disney reboots cause me equal amounts of delight and righteous anger. Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, The Little Mermaid: if there’s any message there, it’s that women should be hetero, beautiful and probably silent. Even better, asleep. One of my favourites is Beauty and the Beast, which tells the story of a spoilt daydreamer, imprisoned and blackmailed until she falls in love with her abuser. I’m writing the BDSM version right now. It’s empowering. At least a Belle who reads the Marquis de Sade and dreams about whippings wants everything she gets.

Sure, I’m a feminist. I believe in “the radical notion that women are people”, in the words of Cheris Kramarae. I had some interesting discussions with my editors on this point, especially as regards Sheri and her boundless enthusiasm for sex. I adore the erotica written by Remittance Girl, who takes a similar approach to liberated female sexuality as Greta Christina, a fantastic atheist blogger and sex writer. I wanted my story to reflect these concerns of mine, and I’d welcome any comments on this subject.

Fairytales, zombies, (romantic) BDSM and feminism are themes that run through 1001 Nights. But the story’s also just playful pop fiction that I wrote for fun. I hope you enjoy the reading as much as I enjoyed the writing.

The story goes that every day Shahryar (Persian: شهریار‎, “king”) would marry a new virgin, and every day he would send yesterday’s wife to be beheaded. This was done in anger, having found out that his first wife was unfaithful to him. He had killed 1,000 such women by the time he was introduced to Scheherazade, the vizier’s daughter.

Addison sets a plan in motion to seduce her husband.

Enjoy this glimpse inside Vows

Peyton’s funeral was beautiful and emotionally overwhelming for me. Tyler went to his parents’ house after the church service to pick up the girls. He was never good at showing emotion or handling it when I did.

I accompanied Colin to the graveside service and the funeral brunch afterward for continued moral support. He was a wonderful man, but he wore his emotions on his sleeve. After the brunch was over, the immediate family and I went back to Colin’s house. We spent the day consoling each other and telling stories about Peyton and her antics. We talked about how she seemed to have a sixth sense, a feeling about how things were going to turn out. I finally said my goodbyes and headed home.

I looked over at the clock on my dashboard as I pulled back into the driveway and was stunned by how late it was. I was tired and emotionally drained. I just wanted to go to bed. I opened the door and set my purse and keys down on the table, slipping off my shoes.

“Nice of you finally to come home,” Tyler snarked before I saw him walking into the foyer.

“What?” I asked, shaking my head and trying to figure out what he meant.

“You’ve been gone all day,” he snipped.

I started to walk away from him and down the hall. “I was with Colin. Where did you think I was?” I replied just a snarky.

“Is there something going on with you and Colin?” he spat, ripping what little was left of my heart out.

I spun around to face him. “You have got to be kidding me! Really, Tyler? Is that what you think?” I took a deep breath and my body started to shake. I was on emotional overload and about to explode. “Do you really think I would do that to Peyton?” I seethed as I wiped the tears running down my cheek with the back of my hand.

“That’s what I mean. You ask if I think you could do that to Peyton and I’m wondering if you would do it to me,” he yelled.

M. S. Spencer is in the spotlight!

Join me in welcoming her to my blog for an interview. Then read my review of her book, TRIPTYCH.

~~~~~~~
Welcome! Welcome! Let’s get started, shall we?
When we first met, I asked you how you came up with the title for Triptych. We had a good conversation. I know you can’t say much without spoiling the story. Could you tell us a little and did the title come first or the story?
Certainly, but first, let me thank you for having me here today. It’s always such fun to talk about oneself…J
I came up with the plotline for Triptych after reading about the legend of the Three Sisters—a set of three rocky islets in the middle of the Potomac River in Washington, DC. The story goes that one of three Indian sisters fell in love with a white settler. When her father forbade the match, she decided to swim across the river to be with her lover. Her sisters followed her, hoping to bring her back, but a huge storm sprang up and all three were drowned. The legend is that the sisters forever guard that bend of the Potomac and will kill any man who tries to cross.  I thought a story that entwined the Indian legend with that of three human sisters living high above the rocks would be very romantic. Here’s a summary:
Both Miranda Cabot and her sister Honor prefer their solitude to romance, Miranda having watched her husband die in flames on the Potomac River rocks called the Three Sisters. Not so their younger sister, Sybil, who invites a mysterious Frenchman calling himself the Chevalier du bon Arnaque to stay with them in their mansion overlooking the deadly rocks.
Misgivings about the stranger’s intentions cause Miranda and Honor to ask their neighbors Dieter Heiliger and his grandson Corey to chaperone. Three beautiful, strong-willed women living in a house with three handsome, virile men leads inevitably to an intricate web of jealousy, sex, and intrigue. Add in long-lost master artworks, stolen prototypes and a resident genius and you have a recipe for romance. Who will end up with whom, and will the Three Sisters take another life as the legend calls for?
As to the title, I spent many a wakeful night trying to come up with it. I pored over the thesaurus entries for “three” and “tri.” I checked song titles and quotation books. Passing pedestrians would stare at me as I mumbled “triangle?—nope, clichéd—trimester? Tribbles?” Desperate, I sought solace in dessert. I swear on my mother’s Bible the title Triptych simply dropped into my lap along with the chunk of blueberry pie which I don’t think I’ll ever get out of my white skirt. (Note: a triptych is a work of art in three panels hinged together—hence three separate but interconnected pictures.)
You’ve written many books and each one is quite different. Where do your ideas come from?
The settings are all favorite places of mine: Old Town Alexandria (Virginia), Chincoteague Island, the Gulf Coast of Florida, Paris.  The setting often spurs the plot—in Mai Tais and Mayhem, the aquarium at the famous Mote Marine Labs in Sarasota simply cried out for a floating corpse. It certainly wasn’t that I wanted an excuse to loll around on the beach with an umbrella’d drink and watch for dolphins.  Some stories also contain autobiographical snippets woven into the fiction (especially my latest, Lapses of Memory).
What is your favorite part of your writing process?
Fifth revision. No, fourth. When the bulk of the writing is done and I can indulge in adding delicate touches and embellishments, enriching the action.
Do you listen to music when you are writing, or is there a routine you have for beginning a new book?
No, I can’t have any noise at all when I write. Even a car passing with radio going full blast halts the process.  I start a new book with the last line and then work backward (well, more sideways, like a drunken turtle) from there. The first three chapters are sheer hell, but after that I more or less coast between toll booths (i.e., the intermittent points at which I wonder just where I’m going with this).
What do you do to relax and unwind?
Now that I’m in Florida, I walk to the beach and stare out at the water, giving thanks for the ability to do so. Then I go back home and make a drink (not a Mai Tai, sigh) and watch the news.
Are you working on something now?
Ooh, I’m glad you asked. I’m almost finished the penultimate revision to The Mark of Love and Death (tentative title) set in Old Town Alexandria. Here’s the blurb:
Her first day as docent in the George Washington Masonic Memorial, Claire Wilding finds a distinctly non-Masonic item: a dead body. As she deals with a smitten police detective, a handsome Senator, black ops agents, and two ruthless mothers, she learns more than she ever expected to about jewels and pennies, irregular Masonic lodges, and our first President’s family secrets.
I’ve also started a story called The Wishing Tree, set in Chincoteague. It involves visiting NASA scientists, spies, and mistaken identity. And two romances. So far.
Five Fun Short Questions!
Favorite sweets?
I don’t have much of a sweet tooth (it disappeared the year I discovered beer), but now and then I fancy something chocolate—bittersweet of course, maybe with sea salt and caramel. Or plain old whipped cream!
A vegetable you can’t stand?
Okra. It’s that gooey, stringy stuff that oozes out of it—yuck. Other than that I love pretty much any vegetable, luckily for me since my family includes two vegetarians and a vegan. We always had a garden and planted, besides the usual suspects, things like artichokes (too big), corn (also too big), sorrel, lots and lots of herbs, golden beets, etc. Now my son establishes urban gardens and teaches sustainable agriculture. Where did I go wrong?
Wine or beer?
Do I have to choose? I drink a lot more wine (buttery French burgundy when I can get someone to pay for it) because it’s low-carb but I do love a nice brown or red ale.
Slow blooming romance or wham I’m in love?
Slow—I like the heroine to discover that she’s in love after she’s gotten to know her hero.
Sexiest man ever?
Sean Connery. No question.  Sexiest bad boy: Robert Downey, Jr.
Thanks again for having me Laura. I hope you read and enjoy all my books—and tell your friends!
Thank you for taking time away from your beach walk to answer my questions. I had a few chuckles from some of your answers. I wouldn’t mind sitting down and shooting the breeze with you, enjoying one of those yummy Mai Tais. Maybe we’ll spot Sean or Robert!
Triptych
goodreads-badge-add-plus
My Review
Funny, flirty, and downright sizzling in a few places.
Triptych is a tale of three sisters. They all live together in a mansion on the bank of the Potomac River.
Sybil is the youngest, and keeps her older sisters on their toes with her propensity for flitting around willy nilly and  lifting her skirts.
three roses photo: three roses three_roses.jpg
Honor is the oldest and more staid of the three, kind of like their fairy godmother, tempering their rash decisions.
Miranda is the middle child and seems to be the most grounded. She’s funny, self-confident and adventurous.
When Sybil takes an off the cuff comment seriously and goes to Craig’s List to find an aristocrat for a companion, the other sisters, after getting over the shock of someone actually answering the ad, decide to let the mysterious Luc Rever, Chevalier du Bon Aranaque, come and stay for a week. Who knows, maybe it’ll work and she’ll land her man.
Just as a precaution, they invite a family friend, Dieter, and his visiting grandson, Corey, to stay at the house while the stranger is visiting.
Pretty soon this quaint life on the river is thrown topsy-turvy as the sisters are drawn into the middle of an art theft.
In the beginning, the story flows smoothly along the shores of the Potomac, but as you read on, it picks up pace, the current rushes around the configuration of the three rocks called The Three Sisters, and as you get caught up in the chase, you end up in the rapids, rushing to the conclusion.
Triptych may be categorized as erotic, but I found more developed romance than just beyond the bedroom door scenes.
It was fun watching these sisters interact and live together. I sometimes felt like I was in another time. A step back to when life was gentler, more family oriented.
Then, situations jolt me back to the present as characters step forward and take charge.
Filled with pictorial surroundings and down to earth characters, Triptych is a grand adventure with a sensual bouquet of women looking for love.
I have three older sisters and we are all so different. Triptych took me back to when we all lived under one roof. Wow, what wonderful, outrageous fun we had. We may have gotten on each others nerves now and then, but in a pinch we were a united front, a Triptych plus one!
“Julia!”
“Julia! Over here!”
“Julia!”
The screams from the sidewalk outside pierced my ears before the limousine had even rolled to a complete stop.
My hands fumbled, barely allowing me to dab on some powder. “Good enough, let’s get this over with.”
The glass shield separating me from the driver began to descend. “Are you ready, ma’am?”
“Yes, thank you.” Hopefully, the driver could hear my voice over the sound of my heart pounding. My sweaty palms nervously smoothed out my grey wool skirt. The crowd seemed to be moving closer. I don’t owe them, or anyone for that matter, an explanation.
The driver swiftly opened my door, allowing in a sea of flashbulbs. My now ubiquitous forced smile overtook my face. I stopped to pose for the cameras, grateful there were velvet ropes separating the multitude of photographers and reporters trying to get close to me.
Julia, what is your reaction to this latest round of accusations? a voice yelled from my left.
I turned abruptly on my heels, facing the direction of the voice, as the heat rose to my cheeks. “I try not to pay attention to petty rumors.”
Spinning back around to the right, I addressed the waiting crowd. “Thank you all so much for your support.”
I waved before turning back to the left, trying to brush off the last question. It’s none of their business. Waving once more, I headed into the stately building without looking back.
The large entryway was quiet, and the marble wall felt cold against my body; a welcome relief to the heat of the tension outside. I was thankful to have escaped the media relatively unscathed. A moment of calm, so foreign to me now, briefly took over.
The double doors at the end of the hallway creaked open, breaking the silence.
Susan began to walk toward me. “Oh good, you’re here. They’re ready for you now.”
Book Description:
“I had my first psychic dream when I was nine. Psychic implied power, and powerful wasn’t a word I’d use to describe myself. I couldn’t foretell the future or conjure visions at will, but I couldn’t think of a more fitting word to describe what I sometimes saw in my dreams.”
For 23-year-old Mackenzie Hill, tossing her life down the garbage disposal is easy after a painful incident shatters her life. Her heart is bleeding, and moving to Watcher’s Point is a chance to start anew, only she isn’t prepared for the guy who walks out of her dreams and into the flesh. Literally . . . because she’s been dreaming about this sexy stranger for years.
Mackenzie is even less prepared to face the dark nature of her dreams. They’ve turned disturbingly gruesome, full of blood and murder, and when they begin to coincide with the media’s headlines, she and Aidan realize her visions might be the key to stopping a madman from killing again.
Only Aidan has painful secrets of his own, and perhaps the biggest danger of all is falling for him.
Excerpt
Something inside me cracked right along with Aidan’s expression. Everything he’d been hiding spilled from his eyes.
“Aidan . . .”
“I need a drink.” He strode away, leaving me glued to the spot where he’d trapped me. A crash resounded from the kitchen, followed by splintering glass. I willed my feet to move, ignoring the little voice of reason pointing out that maybe I should leave him be for now.
He was sweeping broken glass into a dustpan when I walked in. “Are you okay?” Instantly, I wished I could cast a net and pull back the stupid, inconsiderate question. Of course he wasn’t okay. “I’m sorry. I know you’re not . . . okay.”
“Don’t worry about it. I know what you meant.” He emptied the dustpan into the trashcan and then opened a bottle of Jack Daniel’s, all the while refusing to meet my eyes.
“Mind sharing?” I asked. If there was ever a time for drinking, it was now.
“I thought you were beyond corruptible.”
I recalled how he’d said something similar on Halloween. “You remember more about that night than you let on, don’t you?”
He pulled two tumblers from a dark cherry wood cabinet. “I remember you.” Amber liquid sloshed into both glasses as he poured, and moment later he closed the distance between us. “Straight up?” The question sounded like a challenge.
“Sure.” I gulped down the whiskey and ignored the burn as it slid down my throat. Heat ignited low in my belly, though whether from the alcohol or Aidan’s scrutiny, I wasn’t sure.
He leaned against the kitchen sink and finished off his own drink before pouring another. “I’m sorry I blew up on you. I didn’t come here to make friends . . . to complicate things.”
“I’m a complication?”
His laughter was empty, cold as a morgue. “You’re about as complicated as they come.”
I stared at the bottom of my glass. “Why’s that?”
“You look at me as if you see right through me. It’s unsettling.”
“I don’t mean to unsettle you.”
“Consider me unsettled. Problem is, I think you’re using more than eyesight.” He glanced at me and, never breaking eye contact, finished the whiskey in one long gulp.
I gripped my glass. I’d rather have my teeth pulled than tell him how often I’d dreamed of him over the years. “Can I have another?”
He grabbed the bottle and moved toward me, and I saw him in my mind’s eye as he’d been in the drawing; bare chest, subtle muscles, hair narrowing down to his belly button . . . I stumbled back as he poured a refill.
“Thanks.” The smooth whiskey went down easier the second time.
“Did you dream about me too? Is that why you followed me on Halloween?”
I took another step back, but he advanced until the edge of the counter bit into my spine. “I didn’t.” The lie sounded weak, even to my own ears.
“I think you did. The way you looked at me, like you saw a ghost or something . . .” Brushing against me, he set his tumbler on the cool granite. “At first, I thought maybe you recognized me from somewhere—”
“No,” I interrupted, desperate to lead him away from the subject. “You were imagining things.”
“No, I wasn’t.” He gently pried the empty glass from my fingers and set it next to his. Nothing stood between us now; not even the last shred of my secret.
I held fast to it anyway, like a child unwilling to let go of a tattered teddy bear. “You can think whatever you want. Doesn’t make it true.”
“Doesn’t make it not true.”
