Book Description:

You know your life has hit rock bottom when you’re living off cooked rats and showering once every few months—if you’re lucky. But for Jackson Hart things are about to get a whole lot worse. When her best friend, Tye, disappears hunting for food, kick-ass Jackson’s ‘head south to safety’ plan looks like it’s dead before it’s even begun. But then she meets ex-mechanic Luke Granger, who takes her to his bunker, feeds her with non-rat based food, and offers her protection against the zombie hordes—not that she needs it. She knows how to use a machete and isn’t afraid to.

Jackson was tempted to stay in the city with her rescuer. Food, shampoo and the possibility of finally getting laid, what more could she ask for? But the flesh eaters are getting smarter and the bunker is compromised, so Jackson and Luke have no choice but to make the journey south.

Luke and Jackson team up to find other humans in a road-trip romance for the ages. They travel for thousands of miles with zombies shadowing their every move. They must utilize every resource at their disposal…and then some. On the way, they discover that even if flesh eating zombies are knocking down their door, there’s always time for sex and even love.

About the Author:

Image of Emma Shortt

As a kid Emma wanted to be an astronaut, or maybe Captain Janeway. Because she didn’t really think her career choices through very well she ended up in an everyday geek job, crunching numbers and sighing over syntax. It seemed a long way from the stars, and in an effort to escape Emma decided to get serious about her other passion. Writing.

Several years later and Emma has yet to walk on the moon or sit in the Captain’s chair, but she is still writing. She scribbles stories in all sorts of genres, contemporary, paranormal, post-apocalyptic, historical, sci-fi…if she hasn’t tried it yet she will before long. The only common theme is the romance. A hopeless romantic, everything Emma writes has a love story in there somewhere.

She lives on the west coast of England with her very Greek husband and teenage kiddos. Apart from all things geek reading is her main hobby and she likes nothing better than getting home from a hard day at work and curling up with a book, though sometimes she gets home and writes one instead.

Finally, it’s my turn to tell you about Controlling the Dead, but first I’m going to tell you about how I recovered from the emotional storm this book stirred in me.

Tequila! Yep, Tequila will cure what ails ya.

Just pour a shot, then another and …..well you know.

Pretty soon you’re whistlin Dixie and everyone is your friend. You won’t be worrying about being ripped apart by zombies. You’ll be worrying about being the one to get that worm.

Tequila isn’t Tequila without that little worm. I did some research and not wanting to shock you, I didn’t include a close up!

tequila worm photo: Tequila worm tequilaworm.gif

See. He wants to be your friend.

Now, I prefer my shot of Tequila with a chaser. I like a cold Heineken to help wash it down. After finally reaching that worm, my memory leaves me.

The next morning, the hangover is a killer. If an undead stumbled upon me I couldn’t beat his zombie shuffle. I’d be lucky to be able to open my eyes.

Personally, I think it’s the worm.

Blurb:

With the help of her new companions, the path Kansas follows leads to more knowledge of the ever adapting famished.

The team finds help in unlikely places, meeting more survivors, and discovers the possibility of a new beginning.

When the team experiences a devastating loss, Kansas struggles to keep her humanity from fading and distorting like that of the surviving society around her. It begins with knowing who to trust and who to leave behind. First, she must trust herself – she won’t make the same mistakes twice.

As the answers to her questions are revealed, Kansas begins to understand the knowledge comes with a heavy price and great responsibility of controlling the dead.

In a trilogy plot thick with twists and turns, this adult dark fantasy is as emotional as it is horrifyingly gripping.

~~~~
My Review
I’ve been waiting and waiting for this book. Kansas is in my top five of kick butt gals and I missed her. I missed her, and Rudy, and yes, even Mac.
But the Kansas I meet in this book is changed. She’s on the verge of losing it. After all she’s been through I don’t know how she keeps moving forward, but she does, albeit unsteadily. She can’t stand to be idle, to have time to think. So any down time she has she spends plinking zombies.
After Kansas and Reese finally reach New Orleans, and finally get to meet the elusive Mago, they get answers they didn’t count on. And it just gets worse from there.
While Kansas is teetering on the edge of a brain meltdown, Rudy has his own problems, so he’s not much help. And Mac is, well, Mac, so definitely not much help for her there.
There was so much happening that I was on the edge too. The suspense was acute, the violence was awesome zombieness, and the back and forth dialogue was as witty as ever.
Part of the suspense, for me, was waiting to see whether the heat between Rudy and Kansas would be ignited. But, guess that’ll have to wait.
When you do read Controlling the Dead, brace yourself. Annie Walls pulls no punches, keeping you in a perpetual state of suspense and fear, putting you right in the bloody thick of things, and squeezing your heart til you want it to stop.
But don’t.  The author does give you a reprieve at the end. Something from Rudy. You’ll love it! After all, you did survive the book!
When things get this bad, they can only get better, right? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. It’s all in the author’s hands, or mind, and we can only go where she takes us.
Taking on the dead
1771e-addtogoodreadsblack
MY 5 STAR Review
Life for Kansas was perfect until the day the world changed.
She has been hiding out for four years in solitude. It’s the only way to survive. The only way not to draw the living dead. Helping a small group of people, she learns the new world might not be what she assumes. Venturing out of her refuge and comfort zone, she meets Rudy, who helps her find a greater purpose. She realizes that the world has moved on without her. Only it’s not what she expects. Her knowledge of the living dead grows and only makes her more curious as humanity continues to hang on by a thread. While on her search for answers she finds comfort in new friendships and love, but her past seems as if it will haunt her forever.
Kansas takes it upon herself to help other survivors, which would be easy if the famished were the only obstacles.
In a trilogy plot thick with twists and turns, this adult dark fantasy is emotional as much as it is horrifyingly gripping.
Book one of the P.J. Stone Gates Trilogy
New Adult Paranormal Romance
299 pages
by D.T. Dyllin
.
For P.J. Stone, being a “Seer” who has never seen anything is less than fun. And P.J. isn’t known for her patience.
To make matters worse, she must choose a suitable mate to continue the Seer bloodline. Duty always comes before her heart…at least that’s what her parents taught her. When she finds herself wanting someone who is considered off-limits, P.J. is forced to question everything she believes.
As if navigating her love life isn’t complicated enough, P.J. finally receives a vision—of a threat to her world that only she can perceive. But no one will believe a fledgling Seer’s warnings. With nowhere else to turn, she may decide to trust a stranger with her life, her world, and maybe even her heart.
~~~~

My Review

Poor P.j. She knows she’s going to have to submit to her mother and begin Suiridhe. It’s a form of courtship, like debutantes being introduced to eligible young men at a ball.

In P.J.’s world, as  a Seer, she can only marry another Seer. Parents arrange dates between them, hoping the results are a marriage to continue the bloodlines.

Problem is, P. J. loves another, someone forbidden, and she’s no way, no how, going to marry someone just because her mother says so.

On top of that, P.J. finally has a vision. She gets a glimpse of mysterious life forms slipping through the portal into her world. She feels something terrible is looming in the future, but when she tells others about her vision, they shrug her off, saying if something came through the portal, all Seers would have had the vision.

As events unfold, P.J. will have to make some hard choices. Her forbidden love, a mysterious stranger with glowing eyes, and beings from another world threaten hers.

First things first. There is one heck of a love triangle in this story. Not your typical one where the girl can’t decide which one she wants. P.J. knows who she wants but her choice is forbidden.

I can’t tell you who the guys are, but I can tell you they are all alpha’s, fine specimens, and I’m glad I’m not P.J. Each one of them has their own magnetism, drawing responses from P.J. she’s ill prepared to control.

Young hormones run rampant, keeping the sexual tension flowing without being too explicit. Boy did this bring back memories. Of course, I never had three hot guys vying for me. Jenna is P.J.’s best friend and would love to trade places with her. But even she gets fed up with the guys postering.

“No kissing and no fighting in my car? We’re on a mission here, people, and it doesn’t include a sword fight over who gets to mouth rape P.J. first!”

My favorite part of the story is the tangled relationships. The author keeps you worked up, hopping back and forth, never knowing for sure who will end up with P.J.

I had a favorite, or so I thought. Then the hot stranger with the glowing eyes had me thinking twice. And the other Seer had his own special charm.

I think I was as torn up and confused as P.J. but I could laugh about it. P.J. had to deal with it.

Character driven stories are my favorite and there are many in Hidden Gates. Each is well written with distinct voices, easy to tell apart.

There are many surprises in this first book. Lots of secrets. Some are revealed, and some continue into the next book. The author reveals just enough to satisfy you, while keeping you itching for more.

When I finished this book, I immediately began reading the next one, Broken Gates. I had to know what was going to happen next.

I gave this 5 stars because I felt compelled to keep reading long after I should have been asleep, thought about it while at work the next day, and went to bed early to finish it.

Book two of the P.J. Stone Gates Trilogy

New Adult Paranormal Romance

241 pages

P.J. Stone is a Seer who saw too little, too late.

In the past, her biggest worries were boys and school—but war has a way of changing things. Now, the alien Riders are trying to overrun the world. As the last of their kind, P.J. and her friends must find a way to save humanity before there’s nothing left to save.

After choosing a mate, P.J. hoped she’d have time to enjoy her love life. But with everything changing so quickly and major secrets revealed, who knows what the future will bring?

~~~~
My Review
So now you’ll know who P.J. chose as her mate, but war has found her world. The aliens that slipped through the portal, the Riders, are bent on destroying all of the Seers, Guardians, Gatekeepers, and Speakers, leaving no one to defend the innocents.
This is an excellent continuation into P.J.s story.
More secrets are revealed, some puzzling events are explained, and the love triangle is broken.
P.J. learns some startling things about herself. I don’t know how she kept her head from spinning around with so many revelations.
There were several things that happened that stole my breath. I just couldn’t believe it and kept turning the pages, seeking an explanation.
Broken Gates will tear you down, carry you along, and lift you up as you read it. At times I felt helpless, just like P.J.
The authors writing is compelling. I can’t explain it well, but I couldn’t have stopped reading this if I wanted to. Something kept me glued to this story, reading until the wee hours and finally reaching the end.
What an ending! I just couldn’t believe it!
But the war is not over. It continues into Open Gates. And that’s where I went next.
Book three of the P.J. Stone Gates Trilogy
New Adult Paranormal Romance
by D.T. Dyllin
Bryn is gone. Jenna isn’t…herself, and the world has been taken over by the alien Riders. The only constant in P.J.’s life is Khol. But even he might not be able to help her pick up the shattered pieces of her life.
P.J. finally gets the answers to all of her questions, but will she be able to handle the truth? And will she be strong enough to face her own destiny when the time comes?
~~~~

My Review

You finally get all of the answers you’ve been seeking, just as P.J. does.

The war is raging, many people are lost, and P.J. struggles to fulfill her destiny.

I’m going to warn you, the beginning is a shocker, it happens so fast.

  P.J. is devastated. Her world is being destroyed and her heart has been shredded.

Her best friend Jenna is unavailable, so she turns to the one person who is always there, always

offering his shoulder to lean on, Khol.

How do you go on when all you love is being destroyed and taken from you?

P.J. has no idea how to continue. How she’ll find the strength to face the fight that is coming.

They’ve fought a tough battle, but things don’t look good for them. There is a clue to getting rid of the

Riders and P.J. has to draw on all that she is to find the one thing that can save them all.

I got everything I was looking for in this final book.

You’ll need to set aside enough time to read this straight through. I read this in about 3 hours, but

I’m a fast reader. I also reread a few parts that really touched me.

You’ll get a huge surprise with the ending. I haven’t read one that left me feeling like this

one did for a long time, maybe never.

I read it twice, then read it again, always thinking, “How did the author come up with this ending? Did

she know when she was writing the books that the end would be this?”

I liked it. I really liked it. And I’m still thinking about it. Still wondering…..

Her heart fluttered when she heard the sound of the key turn in the lock. She quickly adjusted her maroon silk sari with the yellow border, the one that had caught his eye, and waited eagerly for his footsteps.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven… Yes, exactly seven steps before he stopped, hesitated for a few moments, then removed his shoes one by one and arranged them neatly side by side on the shoe rack.

She smiled. He had been mindful of taking his shoes off every day now…

An excellent first in a series and I will look for more of Destinee Faith Miller. ~Rantin’ Ravin’ and Reading

TIARA TROUBLE

Tiara Trouble: A Destinee Faith Miller Mystery

New Series  Publisher: Cozy Cat Press (August 27, 2013) Paperback: 230 pages ISBN-13: 978-1939816160 E-Book File Size: 609 KB  ASIN: B00EWSB3GG

Synopsis

What happens when Dynasty meets Honey BooBoo, they have a baby, and that baby is raised by Charlie’s Angels? You get TIARA TROUBLE, a bedazzled cozy mystery full of gritty glitz.

One foreign policy question five years ago sent Destinee Faith Miller’s dreams of being Miss American Universe up in flames and landed her back in her hometown of Phenix City, Alabama, with her tail between her legs. But like the mythological bird that her hometown is misspelled after, she rose from the ashes to create Destinee’s Dolls, a thriving pageant consulting business knee-deep in pink, prints and tulle.

A death at the local level of a national event lands her the job of pageant emcee, and Destinee dares to dream of bigger things—maybe even a reality TV show! But when judges start dropping like flies, she has her hands full keeping herself alive long enough to see those dreams come true. Contending with catfights, car bombs, and the camouflage-colored funeral of a redneck’s dream, Destinee gets a little help from her friends, family, and a pit bull named Clarabelle.

~~~~
My Review
I’ve never been much for watching the beauty pageants so I wasn’t sure about Tiara Trouble.
It turns out I really enjoyed it.
The story opens seven years earlier,  as Destinee recalls how far one slippery contestant would go to win the crown. Then you flash forward to one year ago and the fun begins.
You’ll learn everything there is to know about beauty pageants, all the tricks, training, and preparation it takes. I never knew some of this and found it very interesting. The lengths these women go to is astonishing.
It takes a very brave, confident, or crazy woman to try to sell themselves as the product. When I look in the mirror, I see my flaws and I imagine, no matter how beautiful a woman is, they experience the same thing.
Destinee won my heart. She’s a southern gal, with all of the grit, humor, and sass that goes with it. I live on the Gulf Coast and always love reading books that revolve around it. She is whip smart, very competitive, and an astute business woman.
Tiara Trouble was told from Destinee’s point of view and it worked very well for me. I felt like we were friends. She is full of quips and slips of the tongue that had me laughing out loud and thinking, “I wish I’d said that.”
Cozy mysteries are a genre I’ve been reading for many years. The quirky titles and the charming, colorful covers just draw me to them.
Add in plenty of colorful characters and some amateur sleuthing and you get books like this.
Good clean fun, lots of belly laughs, and a mystery you think you know, but you don’t, until the surprise ending.
About Lane Buckman
tiara trouble author mebw
Lane Buckman is a former beauty queen from Phenix City, Alabama. Growing up, she wanted to be Miss America, a criminal lawyer, a super model, the President, a Bond girl, a brain surgeon, a journalist, a back-up singer for Duran Duran, and a college professor of Medieval Literature. In order to fulfill those dreams, she became a writer. She lives in Texas with her family, and enjoys every miserably hot second of it. Her solo debut novel, TIARA TROUBLE, is available from Cozy Cat Press on October 28, 2013, with a sneak peek launch the week prior at the BOSTON BOOK FESTIVAL. TIARA TROUBLE, a light-hearted cozy mystery, marks a departure from Lane’s earlier works in the darker horror/fantasy genre.
The well-received THE ORDER OF THE BLOOD (Black Bed Sheets Books, April 09, 2011), co-authored with Nicole Vlachos, was Lane’s first novel. She has ghost written and consulted on two others. Follow Lane on Facebook and Twitter, and keep up with her world on her blog.
My Date From Hell Tellulah Darling (The Blooming Goddess Trilogy #2)
Publication date: October 31st 2013
Genres: Comedy, Mythology, Young Adult
Synopsis:
Sophie Bloom’s junior year has been a bit of a train wreck. After the world’s greatest kiss re-awakened Sophie’s true identity as Persephone (Goddess of Spring and Savior of Humanity), she fought her dragon-lady guidance counselor to the death, navigated mean girl Bethany’s bitchy troublemaking, and dealt with the betrayal of her backstabbing ex, Kai (sexy Prince of Darkness). You’d think a girl could catch a break. Yeah, right. With Zeus stepping things up, it’s vital that Sophie retrieve Persephone’s memories and discover the location of the ritual to stop Zeus and Hades. So when Aphrodite strikes a deal that can unlock Sophie’s pre-mortal past, what choice does the teen goddess have but to accept? The mission: stop media mogul Hermes from turning Bethany into a global mega-celebrity. The catch? Aphrodite partners Sophie and Kai to work together … and treat this suicide mission as a date. Which could work out for Sophie’s plan to force Kai to admit his feelings for her–if she doesn’t kill him first. Add to that the fact that BFF Theo’s love life and other BFF Hannah’s actual life are in Sophie’s hands, and suddenly being a teenager—even a godlike one—seems a bit like … well, hell. Whatever happened to dinner and a movie? The YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology fireworks continue to fly in My Date From Hell. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book two of this teen fantasy romance series. Breaking up is easy; dating is deadly.
My Review
Synopsis
Sixteen-year-old Sophie Bloom wishes she’d been taught the following:
a) Bad boy’s presence (TrOuBlE) + teen girl’s brain (DraMa) = TrAuMa (Highly unstable and very volatile.)
b) The Genus Greekulum Godissimus is notable for three traits: 1) awesome abilities, 2) grudges, and 3) hook-ups, break-ups, and in-fighting that puts cable to shame.
Prior to the Halloween dance, Sophie figures her worst problems involve adolescent theatrics, bitchy teen yoga girls, and being on probation at her boarding school for mouthy behaviour. Then she meets bad boy Kai and gets the kiss that rocks her world.
Literally.
This breath stealing lip lock reawakens Sophie’s true identity: Persephone, Goddess of Spring. She’s key to saving humanity in the war between the Underworld and Olympus, target numero uno of Hades and Zeus, and totally screwed.
Plus there’s also the little issue that Sophie’s last memory as Persephone was just before someone tried to murder her.
Big picture: master her powers, get her memories back, defeat Persephone’s would be assassin, and save the world. Also, sneak into the Underworld to retrieve stolen property, battle the minions of Hades and Zeus, outwit psycho nymphs, slay a dragon, rescue a classmate, keep from getting her butt expelled from the one place designed to keep her safe …
… and stop kissing Kai, Prince of the Underworld.
My Ex From Hell is a YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology smackdown. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book one of this teen fantasy romance series. Compared to Kai and Sophie, Romeo and Juliet had it easy.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
When you meet someone for the first time, you exchange names; those names become a vital part of his or her identity, the way they’re viewed, and even how close you want to be with them. Though fictional characters are on paper, the same amount of care should go into naming them because they can attract or repel readers.
In The Tempest Murders, Irish Detective Ryan Kelly O’Clery was named after a distant relative who was greatly admired, Constable Rian Kelly. The Irish have always had a habit of naming their children after a family member or friend; I learned that firsthand with my own family, whose males seem to be entirely comprised of Johns, James and Williams.
So when I began the story with Rian Kelly in 1839 Ireland, I knew I would need a name to carry down through the generations. I combed through cemetery records of 19th century Irishmen, particularly near Dublin, which is where the main character originates. Rian later became Anglicized to Ryan, though in some parts of the Emerald Isle it is still pronounced as Ree-an.
Kelly is a common surname, but I didn’t want a character named Rian Kelly and another Ryan Kelly; I thought it would be too confusing. So I made Rian Kelly a great-uncle (five times removed) on his mother’s side, and gave Ryan the very Irish last name of O’Clery. Just the name conjures up the part of the world I tap into in The Tempest Murders.
When I choose a name, I give a lot of thought to whether I want the reader to be attracted or repelled. Uncommon names and very proper names hold a reader at arm’s length, where more common names or shorter nicknames will draw a reader in. When I introduced Ryan’s two precocious preschool nieces and his loving sister Claire, I gave him the nickname of “Re”, which instantly separates his no-nonsense, law enforcement persona from a gentler, more familiar family side.
Rian Kelly was madly in love with Caitlin O’Conor, a lover he lost to a serial killer at the height of a massive storm in 1839. Though she is introduced as Caitlin, she is always known as Cait, a shorter name that draws people in. And when Ryan O’Clery meets Cathleen Reilly, a television reporter who is covering the serial murders in 2011 North Carolina, he learns that she also is called Cait. The two women—one in Ryan’s dreams and one in reality—begin to fuse together when he realizes his dreams are actually the memories of his ancestor.
When he discovers the killer he hunts in North Carolina resembles the serial killer in Rian Kelly’s journal, he realizes history is poised to repeat itself. I chose the name Diallo Delport for the killer; Diallo because it is so similar to Diablo, which means “devil”. And Diallo means “bold” which definitely describes the killer. Both Diallo and Delport are African names, though the killer is an albino Caucasian. The choice of a name from a continent separate from Europe deepens the mystery of the two serial killers, nearly two hundred years apart.
Because Rian Kelly’s lover Cait O’Conor lost her life to the hands of a serial killer at the height of a storm, the question becomes: will history repeat itself as Hurricane Irene barrels toward the North Carolina coast with Rian’s namesake in its path and a modern-day Cait in another killer’s crosshairs?
BLURB:
A provocative story of a love that spans centuries, of soul mates found, lost and reunited… and the lengths to which one man will go to change their destiny.
Irish Detective Ryan O’Clery is working a series of homicides in America when he discovers a journal written by an uncle, Constable Rian Kelly, five generations earlier. The journal detailed the same type of murders as the worst storm in Ireland’s history slammed into the island in 1839.
As Hurricane Irene barrels toward the North Carolina coastline, Ryan discovers even the killer’s description matches his cases exactly. And as he falls in love with television reporter Cathleen Reilly, he begins to wonder if she is the reincarnation of Caitlin O’Conor, Rian Kelly’s lover—the woman who was lost to the killer as the storm raged in Ireland—and if he is the reincarnation of Constable Rian Kelly.
Now he’s in a race to rescue Cathleen before the killer finds her—or is history destined to repeat itself?
Excerpt
They were bites away from finishing their meal when the sky opened up. There might have been a warning, had he been by himself and able to observe his surroundings; but by the time he noticed the trees bending deeply and the gray clouds roiling, the rain had descended on them in a torrent. Within seconds, their food was floating.
A tiny shriek escaped Cathleen’s lips as she vainly tried to keep the rain off her head.
Ryan jumped up, grabbed her wrist and in one fluid movement, had her on her feet. They raced for the back door, managing to rush inside just as a wicked clap of thunder sounded, followed almost instantly by a white streak of lightning.
Once inside, he closed the door, plunging them both into relative silence. He turned around, an offer to get her a towel on his lips. But when he laid eyes on her, the words froze. She was completely drenched. Her hair was hanging in folds from which water streamed until it formed a puddle on the hardwood floor. Her thin blouse was plastered to her body and seemed to highlight the black lace bra beneath. It further accentuated a slender waist before giving way to jeans that she now appeared to have been poured into. Her feet were soaked and as he took in the petite toes peeking out, he found himself staring at the pink polish and a Celtic toe ring before his eyes moved back up her body.
By the time they reached her eyes, he felt as if he was on automatic pilot. His mind was completely blank, his emotions swept away. He stepped toward her at the exact moment he reached out and pulled her to him, the wet blouse teasing his chest. He didn’t look in her eyes but closed his as his lips locked onto hers.
They were everything he’d dreamed about; full and moist and soft. But she wasn’t kissing him.
He stopped and took a step backward, separating them. She stood perfectly still and stared at him with eyes that had grown round and huge. Her face had lost its color and as she continued staring at him, he realized she was in shock.
Horrified with his own boorish behavior, he stumbled over his words. “I am so sorry. I’ve never done anything like that in my life—”
She rushed at him and for the briefest of moments, he didn’t know if she planned to slap him or pummel him or push him to the side to rush out the door. He staggered backward to get out of her way but when she descended on him her arms encircled his neck, pulling his head down to hers. When their lips met again, hers were slightly open and she met his mouth with a passion he had only dreamed about but had never fully experienced.
Ryan’s arms wrapped around her; pulling her to him so tightly he had to contain himself to keep from bruising her. She tasted sweet and fresh, the raindrops mingling with perspiration and a fragrance that was both soothing and wild and which seemed to envelop them both in a sensual cocoon.
His large hand found her face, the palm cupping her chin while his fingers stroked her jaw. Her skin was as soft as silk and moist from the rain; and as her lips parted further to allow him in, he thought he could never get enough of her. As one hand wandered to her hair, weaving his fingers through the long tresses, a mingled scent of citrus and florals wafted upward, growing in intensity as he fondled her locks.
He pressed his body against her, tightening his hold on her as his other hand explored her back, kneading her skin through the thin, wet blouse. Her breath was coming in short shallow bursts now and he could feel her heart quickening as he pressed ever closer. When she sighed softly, he opened his eyes and when she moaned, he reluctantly drew back from her, his muscled chest rising and falling and yearning.
Her face was flushed, the heat rising in her cheeks in a way that tantalized him. Her plump lips remained slightly parted and as he gazed at them, he realized he might have bruised them despite his efforts to control his passion. As his eyes found hers, he discovered them staring at him in a way that disarmed him. The gold flecks he had seen earlier appeared to have grown and now they nearly glowed as she looked at him. They were tumultuous, the colors dancing under her long, curved black lashes. But it was the raw emotion in them that gripped his soul; he’d seen desire before and had witnessed passion but there was something more—something deeper. It was trust, he realized with a start. As if she was standing before him, naked to the soul and she was entrusting herself to his care.
In his peripheral vision, he could see her chest rising and falling with her jagged breath and each rise threatened to take him closer to the peak of desire.
When all signs point to trouble, can Amanda steer clear of disaster?
Amanda Ryder’s determined never to fail her coven again. Next time, she won’t hesitate to pull the trigger to defend her friends. If only they’d trust her enough to let her set foot outside the Academy…
Frustrated and itching to prove herself, Amanda snags her first Academy mission: she and Toby Laboyteaux, fellow teen witch who “kinda sorta sees the future,” must work together to track down a local swamp monster stirring up trouble in the sticks. But overturned suburban garbage cans and blurry tabloid pictures aren’t the only problems—strained relationships with her new colleagues, a growing guilt-complex, and the waxing moon all add to Amanda’s stress. Add to that the pressure of being hunted by a psychic psychopath, and Amanda’s got plenty on her mind.
Meanwhile, Hamilton Nash swears Marian Dupree and her Academy of bumbling do-gooders have thwarted his plans for the last time. Convinced Amanda’s the subject of his mother’s recent prophecy and the key to his future success, he redoubles his efforts to obtain the mystery girl. But when Amanda proves too slippery a quarry, Nash sets his sights on the next best thing. When a valuable member of the Academy coven is kidnapped, Amanda and her friends are in a race against time. Is a tragic future destined to come to pass?
Excerpt
“Run!” Grady shouted as he moved to intercept their followers.
Jeanine shoved Amanda through the door, then sprinted off, dragging her toward one of
the three white Cherokees parked in a row in the dirt lot.
A gunshot rang out, and Amanda shrieked in terror. Kevin’s firing range scolding came
back to her now—here was a target shooting back at her, and it absolutely made all the
difference in the world.
Jeanine yanked her down behind a car. Crouching, she peeked around the bumper while
Amanda ducked her head down, peering through the gap below the undercarriage. The man and
the woman walked toward them, guns drawn.
“Shit,” Jeanine muttered.
In the next moment, Grady and Lorelei burst through the door of the pool hall, guns
leveled at the pursuers.
“We don’t want any more trouble,” Grady announced calmly.
“Like hell we don’t,” Lorelei snarled.
Amanda pressed her back against the car she and Jeanine crouched behind, her patchwork
heart pounding fit to burst. Jeanine pointed at the nearest Academy Cherokee several yards away,
and the two women began creeping toward it. They’d made it past two cars when more shots
rang out, and the armed man skidded behind a blue Ford F150 parked between them and the
Cherokee.
Lurching to a halt, the two women looked about, searching for an escape. Miraculously,
he didn’t seem to notice them. Yet.
Not far from them loomed a collection of large drums overflowing with garbage. Amanda
grabbed Jeanine’s forearm, then nodded toward the mess. Jeanine’s brow wrinkled with a lack of
confidence, and she shook her head slightly.
Maybe Jeanine misunderstood her intent. Or perhaps object levitation wasn’t her strong
point. Amanda, on the other hand, had plenty of practice.
Amanda gave Jeanine’s arm a reassuring squeeze, then extended her hand toward the
drums. She half-closed her eyes to better focus her attention; imagining an ethereal connection
between her and the inanimate object solidified her will. Then she swung her arm like an
underarm pitch.
Fly!
A garbage can obeyed her command, rushing through the air. The gunman spun around
just as the drum crashed into him, pinning him against the truck. As he went down, aiming
wildly, he pulled the trigger.
Amanda sucked in a breath, clutching at the fiery pain blossoming in her shoulder.
They rushed around the front of the truck toward the downed attacker. Amanda
summoned the gun from his limp hand, then Jeanine grabbed his leg and gave him a zap for good
measure. The man’s body jerked, then lay still once more.
“One down,” Jeanine called out.
“That makes you outnumbered, bitch,” Lorelei shouted at the still-at-large attacker.
Jeanine turned back to face Amanda, then gasped. “He hit you?!”
Already the pain was subsiding into a burning sensation. Amanda gingerly lifted her
fingers to examine her shoulder—her shirt sleeve was ripped and a little bloody, but not
punctured. “Nicked me, I think,” she replied with a shake of her head.
Another shot rang out, followed by glass exploding, then a shriek. Heavy footsteps
pounded toward them, then slid through gravel. Grady skidded around the truck, rolling back up
into a defensive crouch. Amanda was damn impressed by the move and made a mental note to
ask him to teach it to her.
He clamped his hand over Amanda’s mouth, pressing her against the truck with his body.
“Don’t scream. And don’t move,” he rasped in her ear, his breath laboring from exertion.
She nodded. Despite this odd, rough treatment, she instantly felt safer with him around.
He would get them all out of this.
“I’ll cover you,” Grady added in a hoarse whisper as Jeanine nodded and fished her keys
out of her pocket. Amanda tried to hand her the gun but Jeanine refused it, mouthing,
There’s one
in the car
.
Grady spared a glance at the unconscious man. “Keep an eye on him,” he ordered.
Amanda trained the revolver—her least favorite firearm—onto the still motionless attacker with
her good arm.
When Jeanine had the keys in her hand, Grady bid her good luck with a silent wink and a
nod. He shouted, “Get her out of here,” as Jeanine dashed off, his gun held steady and aimed at
the building.
As Grady watched her go, still pinning Amanda against the car, she finally realized the
plan:
Jeanine’s a decoy? Fearing the armed woman would open fire on any vehicle leaving the
lot, Amanda hissed against Grady’s palm, “Wait!”
Her protest was ignored. Silently opening the door, Jeanine slipped into the Cherokee,
slipping into the driver’s seat while keeping as low as possible. The door shut behind her with a
quiet click.
“Now, Jeanie,” Grady roared. He released Amanda and edged forward past the car they’d
hidden behind, firing off several shots.
An answering hail of bullets rang out as Jeanine peeled out of the parking lot in a shower
of gravel and dust. As far as Amanda could see, nothing hit the Cherokee as it skidded onto the
road and barreled away. Her skepticism forgotten in the frantic moment, she offered up a prayer
to a heaven she wasn’t sure existed for protection of her friend.
Please, God, keep her safe!
have an exciting excerpt for ya! It was hard to choose just one, they were all so good.
.
Half the streetlights are broken. Between tiny bursts of dingy light bulbs, everything is black, black, black. This isn’t what Sterling Island is supposed to be about. The commercials call it a place for tourism and historical richness. What a joke. The only thing I’ve seen for blocks is buildings and parking lots and nothingness.
A rock tumbles across the sidewalk in front of me.
“You aren’t from around here.”
I freeze. The voice came from my right. At least I think it did. It happened so suddenly, and I was lost in a daydream that I hadn’t really known what happened until after I heard it. I squint to see under the bright street lamp overhead. “So?” I shoot back, trying to sound sarcastic and so not intimidated. Footsteps come from the darkness. He’s walking down stairs, one at a time by the sound of it, like he’s placing both feet on each step before he takes the next one. I still can’t see him.
I spit my gum on the ground, all gross and man-like. If I look unattractive then I won’t be kidnapped. But if he even tries, he’ll be sorry when he gets a Ford key in the eyeball. A shadow appears under the glow of the street light. It’s small and thin. It doesn’t look like it belongs to a mass murderer. I breathe a little easier.
“No girl around here would visit The Face by herself.”
“The Face?” I ask. I chance a look around me and see nothing but buildings and a parking lot with one car parked in it. Why hadn’t I noticed that car before?
The shadow takes a few steps closer and stops four feet away from me. He’s about my age, maybe a little older. There’s something weird about him, and it’s not just because his clothes are so black it makes his head appear to be floating in the darkness. He’s really…sharp. His face is unreadable. His features are so sharp and precise they almost scare me. His hair looks like it was just cut, all sharp ended and straight.
“Turn around,” he says, pointing behind me.
I know there’s nothing but a big gray building behind us. It’s several stories tall and has no windows. I have no idea why he tells me to turn around, but I do. And I see it immediately. Dark gray on the gray wall, it’s like a portrait of a man from long ago. He has bushy hair and long sideburns and a stern look on his face.
“Holy shit,” I say. The guy with his crisp shiny leather jacket and silky black hair is suddenly right next to me. I watch him as he looks at the face on the wall. He smirks.
“It’s always here,” he says. “Though sometimes it moves.”
“What, like a movie?” I ask, realizing how stupid I sound.
“No, its position on the wall. You see the upper left corner?” I look where he’s pointing. The wall there is shiny, not textured like the rest of the wall. “Yeah.”
“That’s where he first showed up. They sand blasted it off, and then he appeared over there.” He points to the bottom of the wall to another shiny spot of concrete.
“No way,” I say. The face on the wall is so realistic. It looks like someone spray painted it with a can of primer and a stencil. “Who’s doing it?”
He looks sideways at me, searching my eyes as if he can’t possibly believe that I don’t know the legend of how this painting got on the wall. From this angle he kind of looks like one of those models in fashion magazines. He’s slightly too thin for a guy, entirely too clean and although I can’t believe I’m going to say it, chiseled. Chiseled like some kind of freaky serial killer. I bet he’s an asshole. He’s probably making all of this up just to screw with me.
“No one does it, it just is.”
“So it’s like paranormal?” I snort.
“You really aren’t from around here.”
I pull out my ponytail and redo it. “Well that’s a good thing I guess, since people around here believe in shit that doesn’t exist.”
“It would be terrible to go through life not believing in things that are right in front of your eyes.”
