My Ex From Hell by Tellulah Darling (The Blooming Goddess Trilogy #1)

Publication date: April 1st 2013
Genres: Young Adult
.
Purchase: Amazon / B&N
.
Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Sophie Bloom wishes she’d been taught the following: a) Bad boy’s presence (TrOuBlE) + teen girl’s brain (DraMa) = TrAuMa (Highly unstable and very volatile.) b) The Genus Greekulum Godissimus is notable for three traits: 1) awesome abilities, 2) grudges, and 3) hook-ups, break-ups, and in-fighting that puts cable to shame.
Prior to the Halloween dance, Sophie figures her worst problems involve adolescent theatrics, bitchy yoga girls, and being on probation  at her boarding school for mouthy behaviour. Then she meets bad boy Kai and gets the kiss that rocks her world.
Literally.
This breath stealing lip lock reawakens Sophie’s true identity: Persephone, Goddess of Spring. She’s key to saving humanity in the war between the Underworld and Olympus, target numero uno of Hades and Zeus, and totally screwed.
Plus there’s also the little issue that Sophie’s last memory as Persephone was just before someone tried to murder her.
Big picture: master her powers, get her memories back, defeat Persephone’s would be assassin, and save the world. Also, sneak into the Underworld to retrieve stolen property, battle the minions of Hades and Zeus, outwit psycho nymphs, slay a dragon, rescue a classmate, keep from getting her butt expelled from the one place designed to keep her safe …
… and stop kissing Kai, Prince of the Underworld.
My Ex From Hell is a romantic comedy/Greek mythology smackdown. Romeo and Juliet had it easy.

My Review

.

I’ve always had a thing for Greek Mythology. Gods and Goddesses and fantastical beings, what’s not to love.
So, meet Sophie. A normal teenage girl, shuffled off to boarding school and dealing with all that goes with it.
She has two close friends, Theo and Hannah.
Theo is more like a big brother figure, being over protective. You’ll find out why.
Hannah is any girls dream friend. She’ll always have your back and never try to steal your boyfriend.
Can’t forget Kai. I’ll let you discover if he’s a good guy or bad guy.
The thorn in her side, her nemesis is Bethany. It’s not any one thing that started the bullying. Bethany just picked her as her target.
When Sophie eaves drops on a phone conversation between Bethany and some mysterious guy, she begins to form her plan of revenge.
As with all plans, Murphy’s Law kicked in, and her plans came back to bite her in the you know what.
If it weren’t for Theo, she’d be in a world, or worlds, of hurt. Now, she discovers she’s Persephone, the Goddess of Spring, trapped in a young girls body with no memories of her past. No longer your typical girl, she has to be careful who she trusts and get her memories back, quick, as the Gods are coming for her.
Sophie is terrific. She’s smart, funny, and not afraid to stand up for herself. Not a shrinking violet at all. She won’t be putting up with any bullying, neither humans nor Gods.
There’s plenty of action and a blooming romance to keep you turning the pages.
And the world building, both on the school grounds and in the underworld, is incredible and fascinating.
From middle graders, to teens, to mature adults, I’d recommend this book. It’s a quick read, and has lots of adventure, and fantastical beings, good and bad.
Set aside your belief and enjoy this story, It’s good, clean fun.

Hmmmm . . . favorite mythological being . . . I don’t know. But, I do know that I love the blurb for this book and I love your review, Laura. I love that the author’s quirky writing style shows through in both, also. Sounds like a cute and clever read. And I love the email tease from the beginning!

  4. This sounds like such a fun read! And it’s great that with all the humor and fun, the world building doesn’t seem to have suffered. It sounds really well crafted and unique, too! Great review! 🙂

    • fuonlyknew says:

I had as much fun writing the review as I did reading the book. Great world building and so many different characters. I like it when the secondary characters steal the spotlight now and then.

  5. jannashay says:

My favorite mythological being is Zeus. He’s the ruler of the Olympian gods. Have to go with the man in charge.

I like Hades because he’s a little pathetic. He had to steal Persephone, because he was lonely. Lol

  12. mcushing7 says:

I would say that my favorite mythological creature would be The Sirens, namely Circee, I believe she wasa witch, but was tied in with the Sirens from mythology! Love it!!!! Thanks again for more amazing giveaways!!! Hope I win!!!
