MY REVIEW

Taking a dog into your home. Nurturing it. Giving comfort and love. And then letting go is a selfless act. And one of bravery. Those who have dogs know how much they give us. The love they demonstrate when greeting us joyously when we come in the door. Comforting us when we are sad or feeling poorly. They truly are man’s best friend.

Foster’s Leash is a sweet, poignant tale of one young girl’s act of compassion for a dog, Pepper, who needs a home. The illustrations are lovely and the story a gentle one. It’s also an educational experience for those who are considering fostering. Bonding with a foster pet is inevitable, yet, the letting go, knowing the dog will have a home, is a reward in itself. A lesson of love.

Boo’s Blue Poo and Goo

by Toni Nelson

.

.

Genre: Children’s Chapter Book

Synopsis

.

‘Give a helping hand to someone in trouble today and you will be richly rewarded!’

Diamonte De Dazzle (owner of the world’s most famous department store) read her daily horoscope and was puzzled. Who was in trouble?

Who, what, why, when and where? How on earth could she help?

She then encountered Boo, a homeless blue cat, trying to escape from TCC, the horribly horrible Cat Catcher. Boo was the only truly blue cat on the planet, so TCC intended on cat-napping and exhibiting her to become rich and famous.

(Evil laugh from TCC . . .)

The combination of an eccentric department store owner, as well as TCC, two snobby socialites, plus a fashion event which is unexpectedly and thoroughly thrown into chaos, is life- changing.

.

Enjoy this peek inside:

The only happy time in Boo’s day was when she was peering into shop windows. Behind the windows always looked warm in winter and cool in summer. They were cheery, clean, bright, and safe, and a lone pussy cat could live there very happily. The sign on her favourite shop read: DIAMONTE’S DAZZLING DELIGHTS. It was an enormous store with squillions of floors. It seemed to reach up into the sky! It was so big that, once, when she’d looked up to see how high it was, she’d fallen over backwards … and still couldn’t see the top of the building.

The staff of Diamonte’s created beautiful window displays. Once, there was an enormous basket with a big toy cat sitting in front of a fireplace—Boo loved big cushiony couches with soft rugs and soft toys! How she dreamt of curling up and sleeping in that beautiful window. She sat for ages gazing in, imagining herself playing with the soft toys, rolling around, and sleeping peacefully in front of the fire.

Sometimes, she thought back to the day she’d bravely crept inside and had a quick peek. It was wonderful! Boo had never felt happier than the short time she’d spent inside Diamonte’s. It somehow felt just right.

.

About Author Toni Nelson:

.

.

Toni is Australian-born, considering herself extremely fortunate to have had parents who encouraged her love of books. Seventy years on, she is still an ardent reader.

(Thanks Mum and Dad.)

She enjoys writing, previously assisting in the production of a monthly community newspaper: The Bayswater Buzz.

This story is derived from a brief news report she watched some years ago, which has somehow morphed into this book.

She truly hopes you enjoy the story of Boo, the blue cat.

Picture A Garden by Linda Hornberg
CategoryMiddle-Grade Non-Fiction (Ages 8-12), 160 pages
GenreChildren’s Non-Fiction.
Publisher: Peanut Butter Publishing
Publication Date: January 28, 2025.
Content Rating: G: Topics only include gardening and being outdoors.

Book Description:

What springs to mind when you hear the word GARDEN? Would it surprise you to learn that the world just outside your door is overflowing with art, science, humor, drama, intrigue, and colorful personalities? Nature has you surrounded. It’s time to come out with your hands gloved and your feet galoshed, ready to sow some spinach, pick a peony, mulch a maple, root a rose, graft a grape, stake a spruce, water a walnut, and hug a hemlock.

Set down your screens and take up your trowel.

Adventure awaits!

The stories inside this book are nearly all true. I have never actually seen a chorus line of worms decked out in feather boas, but I can guarantee that there are plenty of real-life larvae out there merrily chewing up the scenery. You can turn orange from eating too many carrots, and there really is a tiny plant island called a liverwart–although there probably are no tiny castaways living on it. Welcome to gardening for smarties. Never stop thinking, wondering, and digging, and you’ll never be bored. Have fun.

MY REVIEW

I don’t read near as many non-fiction books as I do fiction. When I do, it’s usually memoirs or such. That said, I was wowed by Picture A Garden.

I have a green thumb. I love feeling the soil between my fingers. The smell and feel of the plants and trees I tenderly care for. I’m always doing my due diligence. Learning what makes my flora grow. What they need to thrive or how to help them when they aren’t. This book not only taught me a lot, it also charmed me.

Linda used her own handwriting, filling the pages with fun details. And every page was filled colorful drawings. I loved that. She also made me laugh with the little stories she shared.

I read some of this with my son. His middle grade years are well behind him. And this is targeted for that age group. He mentioned how much he enjoyed reading it with me but probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much when he was younger. There is a lot of detail and we agreed. It would have been better read as a family or by someone a bit older. That’s the only hitch with this wonderful book.

Picture A Garden has a permanent place on my book shelf. I want it in easy reach. Spring is coming and the time to get my hands dirty is almost here.

Meet Author Linda Robin Hornberg:

Linda Robin Hornberg grew up in New York, drawing endless paper dolls and adventure comics with her sisters, Brenda and Heidi. She also enjoyed collecting shiny mimosa seeds in little bottles, nibbling parsley from Mom’s tomato patch, sword fighting with Iris leaves and flipping cicadas back onto their feet. Her incessant doodling landed her at the Hartford Art School. She received her BFA in Printmaking from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Further formal studies led to classes in children’s illustration and certification in landscape horticulture.

Linda is a permanent transplant to Seattle, where she remains an enthusiastic gardener, insatiable reader, unapologetic punster, and incurable cat lady. Please do not offer her your strays.

Meet the Authors:

Sister-author duo Sofie Wells and Ali Barclay form the writing team behind The Tales of Charlie Wags picture book series. The series offers young explorers a baseline introduction to the world’s most famous cities. As daughters of immigrants, their family heritage exposed the sisters to the importance of cultural diversity early on. Their parents prioritized showing them the world, even on a tight budget. This instilled in them the idea that travel is one of the best forms of education.

Knowing that not all children had the chance to explore the world firsthand, Sofie and Ali decided to put pen to paper and create a story they had in their minds for many years about a globetrotting dog. Their series mission is simple: provide a conversational understanding of the world’s most famous cities through charming stories that make far-off places accessible to every child and family.

MY REVIEW

Oh my, this delightful story brought back some special memories. Daisy was such an endearing character and it was special to walk in her footsteps and remember the wonder of visiting my own Grandma. She had a little house on a small lake and we’d play games, eat her yummy food and read together.

Grammie and Pupa are wonderful grandparents and Daisy is a sweet young girl. Young ones will have their own memories while reading it with their grandparents or parents. I adored it!

Meet Author Daisy Butterfield:

I was born in a small New England town. Growing up I lived just two houses away from my grandparents, and spent countless days hanging out with Grammie and Pupa playing games and gardening. I loved flowers, and still do. I would roam the fields picking wild Lupine, Queen Anne’s Lace, and, of course, Daisies. This book is a legacy to my grandparents, a way of saying thank you for the sweet memories. May you make sweet memories with your little ones as you read this book with them.
