How did you decide to become an author?

I always loved to read even as a kid. I would make up stories for my siblings and sometimes would even do plays. I just have always thought it would be neat to write a children’s book. Felt that I needed to.

What is something unique/quirky about you?

I sort of have an obsession with the movie Dirty Dancing. I have different anniversary dvd versions and have gone to see the movie in the theater when they bring it back. I have even been to the resort where most of the movie was filmed. When a song plays from the movie I could tell you what scene that is. I love Patrick Swayze!

What’s something really interesting that has happened to you?

I recently was part of a reality tv show. I went for filming in January. I then got invited back for another season and I go for filming for that in June of this year. It is a reality entrepreneurship docu series. I run a pooper scooper business with my twin boys called The Poop Fairy.

How do you find time to write as a parent?

Luckily my boys are now 22 so that makes it easier to write. Its difficult to find time writing when I work full time as a nurse still and run a business with my sons. I have a rotating day off during the week from nursing and that is when I can sit down surrounded by my dogs and write. I am also a fast typer so makes it easier to write. I am better at expressing myself on paper.

What did you enjoy most about writng this book?

The thing I enjoyed most about writing this book is that it is based on my real life potbelly pig named Winston. Kids get to learn some facts about pigs that they may have not known before. I was a lot like Winston when I was younger. I was really shy and had a hard time making friends. I can relate to Winston because of that and I think kids will also. What helped me make friends was finding something I was good at. First it was tetherball and then it was basketball. I feel that being good at something it was easier to make friends. Winston is really good with his nose. Probably his greatest asset and it helped him to fit in.

Tell a little about Winston. What makes him tick, his love of food and how he uses that to cope with his feelings.

I got Winston from a mutual facebook friend when he was just a couple months old. I always wanted a pig. There is no such thing as a mini pig. If you see one they have probably been starved. For this reason the pig sanctuaries are full because people think they stay little. Pigs are also very smart and very stubborn. They are very routine animals. Winston has his own toddler bed at the foot of my bed that he sleeps in with a bunch of blankets that he likes to root in first. On the mornings that I work and he hears me brushing my teeth he will usually go outside through the dog door and go potty. Then he knows its going to be breakfast time. He usually throws a fit by making noises while I am preparing the food because Im not preparing it fast enough. When I leave for work he stays in his kennel that he gets in once I get some cheerios in my hand. Winston loves music. He will wag his tail when music comes on that he likes. He loves belly rubs and his back being scratched with a back scratcher. He likes to eat anything that I am eating. This is how I know he does not like bell peppers and black olives and more recently limes. He will try anything though.

Have you written anything else that is not published?

I used to write poems so those would be really the only other things i have written that haven’t been published.

What kind of research do you do before writing?

For this book I had researched facts about pigs. I did this research when I first got Winston. Googled everything.

What inspired you to write this book/series?

What inspired me to write this series was that Winston was always getting in trouble for something. Mostly it was tearing his beds up. I could not find a bed that he would not tear up with his nose. He has also put holes in my walls with that nose of his. He was not happy that I was gone at work and that the dogs took over his kennel. I now lock him in his kennel and he has behaved since for the most part. Someone had told me i should start a blog so at first I did. I then met Nadyia the illustrator and we agreed to do a children’s book together. Winston was the perfect character. I plan on writing many more adventures with Winston and introducing my other pets into the books. The next book I was going to introduce my Frenchie Owen and maybe my other three dogs. Owen used to bring me large rocks from out in the dog run. He thought they would make good chew toys. In the next book Owen’s dad is a rock collector and Owen wants to take one of his dad’s best rocks for show and tell but he tells him no. In the book Winston helps Owen and they both learn a lesson along the way.

.

Sarah lives in Arizona with her husband, kids, and menagerie of pets including Winston the pig. She is a surgical nurse who loves writing and has enjoyed working on this book with her friend and colleague, Nadiya. She and her two sons also run a pooper scooper business called The Poop Fairy.

Nadiya Lobanova is a medical and scientific illustrator with a surgical nursing background. Due to her wide interest in other fields, she is also keen on creating illustrations for children’s books and thus teamed up with Sarah to visualize a wonderful story in hopes of bringing a bit more kindness to this world through a growing generation.

MY REVIEW

The little girl inside me had so much fun with this story. A magical kingdom. Adorable characters, animal and human. And a fun project that lands them all in a big pickle. What’s not to love. And I don’t want to forget the wonderful, colorful illustrations. I peered at them again and again. Finding something new and fun each time. The band made up of llamas cracked me up.  There are also these fun bubbles inserted on some of the pages that explain the meaning of some words. I bet some people will be surprised to learn about peanuts. It was all good fun and I’d love to read more in this series.

An Angel, A Princess, and a Fairy

I am often asked why the main characters, who were inspired by my real daughters, are not all princesses. Afterall, they are the daughters of the King and Queen. Why the Angel, Princess, and Fairy titles?

I created my books to entertain my daughters. At the time, I didn’t even know if I was going to publish them. My husband nicknamed our little girls his angel (Scarlett), princess (Daphne), and fairy (Cora) since birth. He wanted them to have different, regal, and magical nicknames. We always worked hard to highlight each of our daughter’s individuality and beautiful gifts. We purposely chose names that didn’t sound alike, end alike, or start with the same letter.

If I gave all three of them princess titles, they wouldn’t have understood why. In my chapter books, which will be releasing in 2024 (fingers crossed), I explain how they receive their magical powers and why they have different titles.

As for their individual powers, well, that was purposeful as well. Each character has a magical power to help a fellow creature in need. Angel Scarlett has heavenly skin that can bring beauty to something dark and grim. Princess Daphne has the ability to immediately bring happiness and comfort to a creature feeling sad. Cora has speed and enchanted hearing.

When Scarlett was born, we called her our angel. She was born with a rare skin disease called Ichthyosis. The doctors didn’t think she would live a long, normal life. We had prayer groups all over the world praying for her. Within in one week, we were told that by the grace of God, we could bring her home from the hospital. She is our angel on earth. I wanted her skin to be magical instead of something that prevents her from living a normal life. Thus, I gave her skin powers in my books.

Daphne is hilarious. She says things that are absolutely hilarious and that only an adult would understand. This is where her character is often seen making her sisters laugh and hence them saying “oh Daph!” She is also very in tune with her feelings and others feelings. She is a big hugger. It seemed very fitting to have her have the power to immediately make someone feel comfort.

That leaves Cora … our little wild child. She is always running around and has so much energy. She also doesn’t listen to me very well. So, I gave her the power of speed and enchanted hearing … I’m hoping the law of attraction will take place and make her listen better. A mother can dream.

MY REVIEW

I always enjoy books that teach me something. I learned about Judaism and had a very fun and exciting adventure also. Lots of wonderful, genuine characters and great graphics made this a quick, exciting read.

Wrassle Castle : Learning The Ropes

MY REVIEW

Lydia is quirky and determined. Living in the shadow of her famous brother, she’s determined to bust out and entering the wrestling competion could be her best bet. But her brother is accused of treason and her goal has changed.

I was totally in Lydia’s corner. She won me over and made me laugh. Wrassle Castle is a series I’ll continue reading. Friendship and adventure await. Equally fun was The Author’s corner at the end of the book.

Wrassle Castle: Riders On The Storm

MY REVIEW

The story continues and Lydia is more determined than ever to continue rising in the ranks of wrestling. She’s just as determined to rescue her best friend and free her brother.

More fun, some problem solving and lots of exciting wrestling matches made this reader happy I continued with the series.

Wrassle Castle: Put A Lyd On It

I started the last book with hope for a satisfying conclusion for Lydia, her friends and her brother. Got all of that, along with a deepening mystery and some great wrestling moves.

The title says it all. Good clean fun.

Poiko: Quests & Stuff

MY REVIEW

Such a fun bunch of adventures. Poiko and Kenzie meet some interesting characters as they deliver packages and do a bit of problem solving along the way.

I adored these two and loved the graphics. A book that covers lots of life’s hurtles and how friendship helps smooth the bumpy road.

Ghoster Heights

MY REVIEW

I wish there’d been more books like this when I was a young girl. Ghoster Heights is one I’d have begged my parents to buy for me so I could read it over and over. So much enjoyment to read and such expressive and colorful illustrations and genuine characters. Well, maybe not ghosts, as they aren’t real. Or are they? LOL Good clean fun and I’ve already read it twice.

Hello, My Name Is Poop

MY REVIEW

Will Poupe has just two more days until school lets out for the year. Will he survive those two days? Could be a challenge when, on day one, he sits on the school bully’s lunch. Oops. That’s how he earns the name, Poop. And the story is one big can of worms after that.

Will’s poop powers were fun and kind of…eww.  Even if you can’t choose your superpower, you can learn from it.

Great graphics and sure did bring back memories of those long ago school days.

The Brothers Flick

While this story is about boys, with girls rarely entering the plot, I still connected and was so wowed by the illustrations and strange occurrences going on. Devoured it in no time and surprised myself by how much fun I had.

Kenzie’s Kingdom

MY REVIEW

When I was young I had an imaginary world that I could travel to filled with exciting people and creatures. I has such grand adventures. Kenzie’s Kingdom reminded me of that. I adored the story and the characters and loved the illustrations and world building.

Verse: The Broken Half

MY REVIEW

At the end of the book the author shares that this book started as some fun doodling and morphed into a great fantasy adventure story. Boy, did it ever. I was sucked right in. Turning the pages and devouring the illustrations. Action packed, with loads of suspense and some great characters and world building. The ending was a cliff hanger and I sure was glad I had the second book so I could jump right back in.

Verse: The Second Gate

MY REVIEW

I enjoyed this even more than the first book.  The characters have new challenges, the artwork is incredible and there’s never a dull moment. Whether as anime or real living breathing human actors, I think this series would be amazing on the big screen. I’d be first in line to see it.

MY REVIEW
.

I tell you, this story resonated with me. A restless night, struggling to sleep, mind filled with anxiety and stress. Whether young like the boy in this story, or mature, like me, we’ve all been there. Tossing, turning, still…. no sleep. He tries everything, and then someone turns him in a new direction to seek and find rest. And finally, he sleeps.

Told through rhyming and fun and delightful illustrations, the message is clear. Leave it all to God. He’s always there to take away your worries and fears. I wish I was a better writer. Could put into words how relaxed and calm I felt as I read further into the book and was guided by it’s message.

At the end of the book, the author includes discussion questions and some fun craft instructions. A special story for families to read together and so timely after the past couple of years.

Interview with Author
.

When did you start writing?

I loved creating stories long before I could write them down. My sister insisted at night, “Tell me a story.” I’d make one up as I went along. My sister always seemed pleased, but her standards weren’t high. She usually fell asleep at the story’s climax. I started telling my own story in the second grade through a diary.

Are there any secrets from Night of Mysterious Blessings you can share with your readers?

It’s not a huge scoop, but one little-known fact is that I didn’t plan the twist at the book’s end. I was writing the story to its intended conclusion when a more exciting and meaningful ending came to me. I thank my Muse, who is simply Divine.

What is a vital message of your book?

I’d love for kids to know what I needed to hear as a sometimes-fretful child—God loves us so much, He has chosen to live within us. The knowledge that the Spirit dwells within can give kids comfort, strength, confidence, and a good night’s sleep.

The book has a discussion, crafts, and activity section. What’s one popular suggestion?

Kids are excited about going on the “Blessings Hunt,” searching for and listing big and tiny blessings each day. Then, at the week’s end, they share their daily treasures with a parent, grandparent, or someone special in their lives. The following heart-to-heart is extremely popular with their lucky listening partners and the children.

Would you rather live in the city or the country?

The country. The desk where I write has a picture window beside it, and I can watch deer taking their morning walk. I often look away from my computer screen, quiet my mind, and do some window gazing—renewing my energy and inspiration.

Saving the Seas for the Purple and Green

A Story of Cleaning Up the Ocean

Category:  Children’s Fiction (Ages 3-7),  34 pages
Genre:  Juvenile fiction/science & nature/environment
Publisher:  Sage Green Press
Release date:   March, 2022
Content Rating:  G. There is nothing even close to PG or R in this book, it is totally G

Saving the Seas for the Purple and Green gives children the hope of making a difference. Washed Ashore is honored to have our work highlighted.” — Angela Hazeltine Pozzi, Founder of Washed Ashore

“A
simple, relevant, and informative read that gives kids a positive
outlook on what can be done to reduce our impact on the ocean.”
— Taylor Lane, Creator of the Cigarette Surfboard

My Review

I’m all about cleaning up our oceans and shorelines. I felt a connection to the story as I live on the Gulf Coast and have seen lots of pollution, and when I was younger and had the time, I would volunteer to help with clean up.

The book is about the size of a magazine which allows you to fully see and appreciate the beautiful illustrations. Nancy’s story is fun, her character, Violet, is a thoughtful young lady, and each page has information on different alternatives to plastic and how we can contribute to less waste.

I read this more than once and enjoyed it each time. Readers of all ages will find something to relate to.

Beyond The Birch

by Torina Kingsley

Synopsis

Eleven year old Macy dreams of action and adventure that will take her far beyond her family’s farm. But what will happen when that adventure finds her?

Long ago, faeries were banished from the land after a legendary battle. So long ago that many wonder if faeries really exist or if the battle was just a tall tale. But one mysterious night, Macy’s mother is attacked, and ever since, unusual things start happening. Missing items, changing moods, and most strange of all, the family’s sheep start behaving unusually.

Her mother is suddenly determined to get rid of the sheep, and Macy suspects that the reason may be sinister. When Macy meets a boy her age, the aloof and sarcastic Jay, they embark on a journey to discover the truth and save her mother. In this twist on The Wonderful Birch, you won’t find kings, queens, or evil stepmothers. Instead, you’ll find two courageous pre-teens from the outskirts, ready to defend Odele from the magical forces that threaten it.

It wasn’t long before the sun disappeared behind a hill, leaving Laurel to wander in darkness. It’s no use, she thought, I’m not going to find him tonight. I’d best be getting back home. Maybe Macy can help me search in the morning.

She turned around searching for the lamplights that lined the Jensen farm. She could barely make them out in the distance. Steeling herself for the long walk back, she gathered her skirts once again.

SNAP! The sound of a twig snapping nearby alerted her that she may not be alone.

It was probably just an animal, Laurel told herself. The wind stopped suddenly—as if holding its breath too.

SNAP!

“Hello?” she called out. She whirled around frantically, her eyes searching for the source of the sound. “Is anyone there?”

A frail voice answered her, “I’m sorry, my dear. I didn’t mean to scare you.” An old woman peeked her head around the tree trunk. Upon seeing Laurel, the woman’s face relaxed a little, and she slowly hobbled over. “There are wolves in these woods, and I fear I don’t stand a chance if I run into one. Best I can do is hide and cross my fingers.”

Laurel squinted in the dark, trying to get a good look at her. Her clothes were worn, and her skin was paler than anyone from around these parts. “Are you traveling to Grimsby? You don’t look like you are from around here,” Laurel replied, eyeing the stranger.

Spell Sweeper

by Lee Edward Fodi

Synopsis

There’s nothing magical about wizard school
. . . at least, not for Cara Moone.

Most wizard kids spend their days practicing spells and wielding wands, but Cara? She’s on the fast track to becoming a MOP (a.k.a. Magical Occurrence Purger). You see, when a real wizard casts a spell, it leaves behind a residue called spell dust—which, if not disposed of properly, can cause absolute chaos in the nonmagical world. It’s a MOP’s job to clean up the mess.

And no one makes more of a mess than Harlee Wu. Believed to be the Chosen One, destined to save the magical world, Harlee makes magic look easy. Which makes her Cara’s sworn nemesis. Or she would be, if she even knew Cara existed.

Then one of Harlee’s spells leaves something downright dangerous behind it: a rift in the fabric of magic itself. And when more rifts start to appear around the school, all in places Harlee has recently used magic, Cara is pretty sure the so-called “Chosen One” isn’t going to save the world. She’s going to destroy it.

It will take more than magic to clean up a mess this big. Fortunately, messes are kind of Cara’s thing.

Brooms aren’t for flying,

not even when it comes to wizards

* * *

These are the essential items in a spell sweeper’s kit:

Broom

Most people think broom + wizard = flying. But take it from someone who actually attends wizard school—no one straddles a broom and jumps from the top of a Dragonsong tower unless they’ve drunk too much of Madame Kree’s secret-recipe Halloween punch.

Goggles

Good for protecting your eyes from residue splatter or from the venom that an attacking creature might spray in your direction. I only use them when absolutely necessary because even wizards don’t seem to have conjured up a solution for preventing fog-up.

Sweeper scarf

These are woven from the fiber of elf’s breath (a very purple and very pretty plant), which has excellent properties for filtering out toxic fumes. We wear our scarves around our necks and pull them up around our faces when required.

Steel-toed boots

Because when dragons stomp, they apparently don’t mess around.

Gloves

Made with special residue-repellant material. A pretty good idea, because you definitely don’t want magical gunk under your fingernails.

Utility belt

Next to my broom, this is my most important piece of equipment because it’s where I store my broom snippers and vials of stain removers and neutralizers.

Barricade tape

When we do a purge in Bliss territory, it’s procedure to rope off the entire area to ensure no one stumbles upon any magical activity. Our tape reads: Chemical Spill Containment Site: Do Not Cross—because no Bliss would take Danger: Feral Magic at Work seriously.

Miniature dustpan

Useful in both the wizarding and the Bliss worlds.

Flashlight

Same.
