Will what the pony needs break Hannah’s heart?

Freckles can’t be convinced to trot sometimes, and even though that’s fine with Hannah, she suspects something must be wrong with the pony. The barn manager thinks it’s time to retire him, so the vet is called and tests are run.

But Hannah enjoys being with Freckles even if they only walk down the trails.
She ignores the facts. When all her efforts to help him fail, she tries desperately to write a happy ending to her pony story.

Will she have to put on her big girl breeches and let Freckles take his own trail, or is she the real problem?

~~~~~
Enjoy this peek inside:
Riding into the forest was like stepping into a magical wonderland. Hannah tilted her head back to enjoy the activity in the tree canopy. A cardinal family chattered and fluttered through the branches. “What’s your story today? Do you worry about anything? Life for you is finding something to eat and not get eaten.”
“You talking to me ’cause I can’t hear you?” As Grace trotted up beside them, her ponytail bounced on her back.
“Just wondering if the birds could write a story, what it would be.”
“They spend their day hunting for food. It would be a boring story. Imagine—I flew to the ground and ate a bug. Then I flew to my branch and looked for another bug.” Grace used her most dramatic voice.
“But then! A mean cat leapt from the brush, and I narrowly escaped with my life.” Hannah wiggled about in the saddle. “Now, it’s not boring.”
“No. It’s still boring and very short.” Grace urged Preacher to walk out, and in two strides, he was in the lead.
“I signed up for writing composition this term, so maybe I’ll learn how to write more interesting stories.”
Grace called over her shoulder. “You’re going to make me read them all, aren’t you?”
“Oh, would you?” Hannah mocked. A moment later, she felt herself falling. She threw her arms around her pony’s neck. She heaved a deep breath and righted herself in the saddle. Were her eyes closed just now? Did Grace notice? Grace seemed occupied with her pony.
“He’s too nervous up front. I’m going to put him back behind Freckles again. Summer is just too short. I’m sad school is starting already.”
“It was our best summer ever. Me and Freckles. You and Preacher. I should write a story about our summer.”
“It would make a journal entry, but not a story. You know why?”
“You’re going to tell me so, go ahead.” Stopping short of rolling her eyes, Hannah repositioned the ball of her foot in the stirrup.
“Because nothing bad happened all summer—everything was perfect, great, wonderful, the best.”
“I get the idea, but I like good stories.”
“You mean, you like happy endings. Without terrible, bad things happening to your character, a story is boring.”
“I don’t see it that way. Anyway, I had no idea you knew so many story-writing rules.”
Grace puffed up her lungs with hot air. “I’m talented!”
“And humble.”
“Want to trot?”
“I’ll ask Freckles, but he’s not been wanting to lately. I’m happy to just walk.” Hannah gathered her reins and squeezed her legs against his side. When Freckles ignored her, she heaved a deep breath as she lightly flicked the persuader strap from one of his shoulders to the other. His head came up, and he began to trot without enthusiasm or energy.
Grace kept Preacher behind Freckles, but the trot faded away after a few strides. “Can’t he go any farther? This slow trot is so smooth. It’s great for Preacher to learn to trot that slow.”
“I don’t think he can. He can walk if he wants—I’m okay with it. I don’t feel like trotting either. Guess I’m kinda tired anyway.”
“Makes you wonder if he doesn’t feel good or if he hurts somewhere.”
“He’s fine. He’s never had much go. Remember when Abby told us about the time Glory disappeared? She tried to follow Glory but couldn’t get Freckles to trot for anything. Boy, was she mad. But that’s who he is.”
“Guess you’re right.”
“Isn’t that the best sound ever?” Hannah twisted in the saddle so she could see Grace.
“Sound?”
“You know. The ponies’ hooves on the ground. I love the thud they make. I love it on concrete too.”
Grace pulled on one rein and circled Preacher when he got too close to Freckles. “He’s going slower and slower. Let’s head back before Freckles needs a nap. Maybe I’ll ride Preacher in the round pen.”
Freckles wasn’t the only one who needed a nap. Hannah needed one too. She’d been asking and asking the pony to walk out, and he was having none of it. At least they were almost back to the barn. She was exhausted from pumping her legs and actively asking him to please walk. Then he stopped completely, and none of her urging could get him to take another step.
She slipped from the saddle and laid her head on his neck. “It’s okay, boy. I understand. I’m tired too. What do you say we just walk together?”
MY REVIEW
Cozy mysteries are among my favorite reads. I have shelves full of them. The covers are colorful and fun and the characters feel like someone you know. And this one has a paranormal element too. More fun for me.
The setting is a small town and the main character, Gabby, is an artist. This really set off my radar. I live in a small town. It’s actually a Single Tax Colony. And it’s full of writers and artists. This made the town of Henry Park feel inviting, comfortable. Even though there is a murderer in the mix.
And as with most cozies, there’s a plethora of characters. Some I really liked. Even Gabby’s brother, Mitch. Though I did want to kick him in the seat of his pants at times. His beagle, Luigi, is a strong character too. Don’t let his junk food cravings fool you.
I’ve read other books by this author and enjoyed them. It makes me happy to tell you I enjoyed Color Me Dead too.
Enjoy this peek inside:
Chapter 1
We pulled into the driveway of a home nestled into the banks of Lake Henry. The overhanging roof, a dark silver color, provided ample shade on the front porch. As if guarding the home against the outside world, stone pillars stood on either side of the door. I parked my car on the circular drive that made its way through the deep, green lawn. Clarence Bradford’s home was well-kept, and the square corners and functional design reflected a sense of order. The light played between the two pillars, creating stripes on the slats of the porch. Built up on the mountainside, the house almost looked like a natural part of the landscape. Standing on the porch was a man I recognized from his book covers: Clarence Bradford. He was still quite handsome for his age, and his outfit—a forest-green button-down shirt, blue jeans, and hiking boots—told me every day was casual Friday. His silvery hair augmented his healthy tan. “You made it.” He took in my cotton flowered tunic, my favorite pair of jeans, and the high tops I was wearing and said, “You are young.” Maybe the high tops were a little much, but they were my favorite shoes. Even in my late twenties, I still hadn’t shed this style of footwear left over from my teens. Maybe it was the artist in me not conforming to uncomfortable heels that made my knees wobble. Clarence stood next to a tray set with a pitcher of tea and glasses. “You made good time. I was just on a break and decided you might be near and need some iced tea.” Luigi leaped out of the car first and ran like a maniac around the yard. “Will he run off?” I asked. Mitch scowled. “I told you. Luigi is the product of discipline and training. He’ll let off a little steam and then be back to his guard-dog status.” From the wild look in Luigi’s eyes as he tried to bounce off a pine tree, I doubted his strict training included that. Trying to put Luigi out of my thoughts, I gave an awkward little wave to my new employer. “Hi. I’m Gabby and this is my brother, Mitch.” My brother walked over and plopped into a chair, grabbed an icy glass, and kicked off his flip-flops. “Excellent, Mr. Bradford.” “Please, call me Clarence.” “Clarence then,” he said, downing the tea in almost one gulp. Nothing like a hangover to make you thirsty. I took a seat in the third chair. The smell of pine trees was so intense around me that it gave me the giddy feeling of Christmas. “You have a beautiful home, Clarence.” “Yes, it’s where I get all of my inspiration. But, of course, growing up around here you already knew how beautiful it was. If I had to write the Adventure Kid books in the city, I don’t think they’d be any good. Can’t exactly have my little adventurers taking the subway to get to their next escapade.” He refilled Mitch’s glass. “Working here,” I paused to look around at the towering trees and listen to the birdsong emanating from them, “sounds like paradise. I work in coffee shops a lot myself.” “Ugh, what a terrible thing. I don’t know how people concentrate in those places,” he said in disgust. “Earbuds,” I answered. “Excuse me?” Obviously, Clarence Bradford had no need to block out sound and pump in music. I pulled my earbuds out of my pocket. “These things.” “Oh, yes. I see young people wearing them all the time. It’s like they have to have an extension cord wherever they go. Seems kind of ridiculous-looking to me.” “You’re so right, Clarence,” Mitch said. “What I hate is hearing people’s phone conversations in the store. Do they even know how stupid they look having a heart-to-heart in the middle of the hemorrhoid creams?” Clarence’s laugh boomed from his chest as he slapped his knee. “I can see you’re going to make this summer interesting, Mitch.” “Mitch makes every summer interesting,” I added. “We’re renting a house on the other side of the lake, so it will be easy for me to come to work over here.” “That’s good. Would you like to see where we’ll be working?” I followed Clarence Bradford to what I thought would be a book-lined study, complete with the smell of cherry tobacco and a roaring fire. Instead, he took me to a room at the back of the house almost entirely encased in windows. There were blinds built into the double panes of glass. Clarence Bradford’s study wasn’t an office at all. It was an air-conditioned room on the lake. “This is beautiful,” I said, spinning around. “I don’t know how you get any work done here.” “Oh, but that’s the secret to writing outdoor adventure books for kids. I write them practically outdoors, with the modern conveniences of air conditioning and Internet. It’s my oasis.” “What a fantastic idea.” The wall facing the windows was lined floor to ceiling with books. As an artist, I appreciated just how much there was to see from Clarence Bradford’s view of Lake Henry. “Do the people going by in their boats watch you? I mean, do you feel like you don’t have any privacy here?” “Tinted windows. I can see them, but they can’t see me. Wouldn’t have it any other way.” The view was stunning, and I also made a mental note that whenever I needed a cigarette, I shouldn’t smoke it within view of this office if I wanted to keep it a secret. As I looked across the lake, the wavy line of the shore caught my eye. It looked like something I had seen before. I stepped closer to the glass. “Are you a bird-watcher?” Clarence asked. “Uh, no. I just thought I saw something familiar.” “Is your house visible from here?” “No. We’re too far away, and our house is on the other side of the road.” I glanced back at the shoreline. My shoulders began to feel cold, and I held onto my arms. The vision was trying to come in again. I must be close to whatever it was that was causing the woman with the cold hand to invade my senses. “I must have the air conditioning up too high in here. You’re shivering,” he said, his eyes never leaving mine. “No, I’m fine. Really.” “Of course …” he said but then asked once more, “You’re sure you’re alright, now.” “Yes.” I turned my back to the window. “This is my first children’s book, so I’m sure I have a lot to learn,” I confessed, changing the subject. *** Excerpt from Color Me Dead by Teresa Trent. Stumbling across a dead body could be the making … or breaking of an aspiring reporter.
During 1958, when the workforce is predominantly male, societal norms dictate women should be compliant, fashionable housewives. To Ariadne Winter, the sole tradition she aims to embrace is that of being fashionable. Bowling Bodies at Spare Lanes Alley
by Laura Hern
(The Lainey Maynard Mystery Series, #5)
Publication date: August 20th 2023
Genres: Adult, Cozy Mystery
What a fun and exciting read! Humor and suspense kept me engaged, and it was hard to put down! Looking forward to the next book in this series!!” Bobbi
When planning a murder, practice makes perfect…or does it?
Super sleuth Lainey Maynard and the Whoopee group are preparing for the bowling tournament fundraiser to save Spare Lanes Bowling Alley. Until an envelope arrived during their practice game that caused more excitement than a scored card filled with strikes. Why hadn’t Gerry Hayward been more concerned?
Spare Lanes Alley had been the hot spot where local celebrity bowlers and newbies gathered. Even framed and signed photos of professional bowlers lined the trophy wall. Now, threats of foreclosure loomed over Gerald and Phoebe Hayward, the owners, and the entire bowling community. More than bowling balls are crossing the foul line.
Gerald and Phoebe Hayward purchased the alley to start fresh after the Professional Bowling Association banned him. Past suspicions of murder, accusations of impending revenge, and enormous gambling debts don’t exactly stop the gossip mongers’ embarrassing rumors.
Lainey and the Whoopee Pin-Slayers will need more than gutter bumpers, shoe covers, and shammy rags to solve the unfolding mysteries.
A fun and intriguing cozy mystery that will keep you guessing until the end. You’ll love the delightful characters, and the twists will keep you turning the pages!
Enjoy this peek inside:
“What crazy weather! I’ve been running all over town in this icy rain!” Della shivered as she hurried through the door of Babe’s House of Caffeine and toward the Whoopee’s regular table.
“Mother Nature must think it’s March, not October.” Francy grinned and pulled out the chair between her and Lainey. “Sit down and dry out. Mom’s running a bit late, too.”
“Are you still trying to figure out a costume for the bowling fundraiser?” Lainey asked. “I think I’ve decided on mine!”
“Didn’t Francy tell you? We’re going as the Blues Brothers!” I’m Jake and she’s Elwood.” She leaned closer to Lainey and, looking at Francy, pretended to whisper. “She’s jealous of my dancing abilities!”
“Absolutely not!” Francy smirked. “I have dance moves that make Elwood look like a beginner!” She stood up, pushed her chair from the table, and began stomping her feet, shaking, and wiggling her body, waving her hands in the air while shouting ‘Hallelujah’!
Everyone in the cafe laughed. Some clapped and chanted, “Go Francy. Go Francy. Go Francy.” “Okay, okay! You can dance, but I’m still the lead singer,” Della chuckled.
Francy stopped, turned to the cafe patrons, and took a bow while they applauded. She pretended to blow kisses to thank them, then turned to sit down at the table again.
“Whew! That’s hard work. I should have done more of Mom’s ‘Sweating to the Oldies’ workout videos!” she said breathlessly. “I’m going to need a large Caramel Macchiato.”
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Or maybe a gin and tonic.
Emily Hildebrandt has run into a bit of a rough patch. She’s lost her job, her fiance and her apartment. Still, she never expected to be desperate enough to accept an invitation to live with her eccentric Aunt Tilde in Redemption, Wisconsin.
But, beggars can’t be choosers. Even if part of the deal is she has to pretend to work at her aunt’s latest hair-brained scheme, The Redemption Detective Agency.
Seriously, the woman is a retired nurse. Why does she think she’s remotely qualified to run a detective agency, especially in a creepy little town like Redemption?
But, when a strange phone call suddenly thrusts them into an actual case, Emily finds herself hoping her aunt really does know what she’s doing … or an innocent person may be the one to suffer the consequences.
A spin-off from the Charlie Kingsley Mystery series! The Redemption Detective Agency is a funny, twisty cozy mystery series set in the 1990s featuring silver sleuths solving cold cases. Great for fans of the Thursday Murder Club.
About Michele Pariza Wacek
.
A USA Today Bestselling, award-winning author, Michele taught herself to read at 3 years old because she wanted to write stories so badly. It took some time (and some detours) but now she does spend much of her time writing stories. Mystery stories, to be exact. They’re clean and twisty, and range from psychological thrillers to cozies, with a dash of romance and supernatural thrown into the mix. If that wasn’t enough, she posts lots of fun things on her blog, including short stories, puzzles, recipes, and more, at MPWNovels.com.
Michele grew up in Wisconsin, (hence why all her books take place there), and still visits regularly, but she herself escaped the cold and now lives in the mountains of Prescott, Arizona with her husband and southern squirrel hunter Cassie.
When she’s not writing, she’s usually reading, hanging out with her dog, or watching the Food Network and imagining she’s an awesome cook. (Spoiler alert, she’s not. Luckily for the whole family, Mr. PW is in charge of the cooking.)
Featuring twin hooks that cozy readers can’t get enough of—classic books and delicious food—this new series from the Agatha Award-winning, nationally bestselling author of several much loved series, including the Fairy Garden Mysteries and the French Bistro Mysteries, is a delicious treat for mystery lovers, especially fans of Ellery Adams, Krista Davis, and Lauren Elliott.
It’s a truth universally acknowledged that a genuinely top-notch party must be in want of a theme. Allie Catt, caterer and personal chef in the beautiful mountain community of Asheville, North Carolina, has devised a winning formula by using her clients’ favorite books as inspiration. Her first themed event is based on Pride and Prejudice (Allie’s cat, Darcy, approves), and it’s so popular that soon she has grand ideas for future parties based on Rebecca, The Great Gatsby, Babette’s Feast and more.
Business is booming, and a rival catering company is fuming. But there’s a sting in the tale when the aunt of one of Allie’s clients and best friends, Tegan, is murdered. Tegan is the victim’s sole heir, and quickly becomes the main suspect. Allie has no doubts about her friend’s innocence, but how to prove it?
Once again, her love of literature comes to the rescue, and with some guidance from her favorite fictional detectives, including Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes, Allie sifts through the clues.
With a little luck—and the kind of pluck that would make Elizabeth Bennett proud—she may be able to stop a killer from serving up a second course of murder . . .
