Felicity Koerber’s bean to bar chocolate shop on Galveston’s historic Strand is hosting the friends and family coming into town for her best friend Autumn’s wedding. As matron of honor, Felicity has a ton of tasks to complete – including making chocolates for the gift bags. She doesn’t have time to solve another murder. But when one of the bridesmaids becomes a prime suspect in the death of a visiting real estate agent, Felicity has to put her detecting skills to use again to keep the wedding plans from getting derailed.

She’s already nervous about the impeding deadline she’s given herself to finally choose between her two love interests – and figuring where life goes once she makes her choice. But add in a missing pigmy goat and a new coffee shop that wants to partner with her, and she’s frazzled.

She begins to discover that not everything is as it seems among the wedding guests. Can she handle the wedding preparations, pull off turning her shop into a concert venue, and unmask the killer – before anyone else dies?

Recipe Post

In each of my Bean to Bar mysteries, I try to explore something different about chocolate, from how it is made to how it is used in cooking.  For Something Borrowed, Something 90% Dark, I wanted to talk about chocolate in savory cooking.  This is something my husband and I explored extensively in our cookbook, There’s Herbs in My Chocolate, which combined culinary herbs with chocolate in both sweet and savory recipes.  We did the cookbook while we were active with the Forth Worth Herb Society.  In the first Bean to Bar Mystery, I used one of the recipes from the cookbook to give Carmen, the Greetings and Felicity Pastry Chef her cooking style, working with chocolate my protagonist Felicity had made.  In Something Borrowed, I have Enrique, a chef who has done a number of pop-up dinners (and pop-up appearances in the series) catering the wedding that forms the centerpiece of the plot.  He decides to play with savory chocolate in a course that includes this Dark Chocolate Mushroom Arancini (which originally appeared in the cookbook).

Dark Chocolate Mushroom Arancini

Makes 8-10 Servings

Traditionally, people made arancini to use up leftover risotto. It’s amazing how many delicious things result from the need not to waste leftovers. These fried balls, with their gooey, cheesy centers, are no exception. The dark chocolate complements the flavor of the mushrooms in the risotto itself, and the herbs in the panko crust are a nod back to Italy. You can use a commercially prepared Italian herb blend or mix together your own dried herbs. If you blend your own, be sure to include dried oregano, marjoram, thyme, basil, rosemary, and sage.

4 cups Dark Chocolate Mushroom Risotto, cooled (see below)

1 cup fresh mozzarella, well drained and cubed

½ cup all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

3 eggs, lightly whisked

2 cups panko breadcrumbs

2 tablespoons dried Italian herb blend

2 cups canola oil

Take a spoonful of risotto and fill it with a cube of mozzarella. Shape the risotto into small even balls. Continue the process until all the risotto has been used.

In a small bowl, mix the flour with the salt and pepper. Whisk the eggs in a second bowl. Combine the panko and the Italian seasoning in a third bowl.

Dip each risotto ball into the flour, then into the egg mixture, and then into the breadcrumbs, evenly coating it with each layer. Place on a tray and repeat until all arancini are prepared.

Heat the vegetable oil in a medium saucepan until a dropped in bit of panko sizzles, then fry the arancini in small batches for about 2 minutes or until crispy and golden brown.

Remove from the pan, pat them dry on kitchen paper, and serve immediately.

Dark Chocolate Mushroom Risotto

8 cups chicken broth

3 tablespoons olive oil, divided

1 onion, diced, divided

2 garlic cloves, minced

2 cups fresh baby portobello mushrooms, diced

2 tablespoons fresh thyme, chopped

2 tablespoons fresh Italian parsley, chopped, plus whole sprigs for garnish

2 tablespoons butter

¼ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon pepper

2 ounces dark chocolate

1 tablespoon truffle oil

½ ounce dried porcini mushrooms, wiped of grit

2 cups Arborio rice

½ cup dry white wine

½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated

Heat the chicken broth in a medium saucepan and keep warm over low heat. Soak the porcini mushrooms in 1 cup of the chicken stock. Chop finely and set aside.

Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring, until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the fresh mushrooms, herbs, butter, salt, and pepper. Sauté for 3-5 minutes until lightly browned. Drizzle in the truffle oil, then add the reconstituted porcini and the dark chocolate. Sauté until the chocolate melts, then remove from heat and set aside.

Coat a saucepan with the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil. Add the rice and stir quickly until it is well coated and opaque, about 1 minute. Stir in the wine and cook until it is nearly all evaporated.

Add the chicken broth 1 cup at a time, stirring until the rice has absorbed each cup of liquid before adding more. Continue to cook and stir, allowing the rice to absorb each addition of broth before adding more. The risotto should be slightly firm and creamy, not mushy. Add the mushrooms to the rice mixture. Stir in the Parmesan cheese and cook briefly until melted.

It’s beginning to look a lot like murder in the sixth installment of this charming cozy mystery series, perfect for fans of Donna Andrews and Jacqueline Frost.

It’s the beginning of December in Rudolph, New York, America’s Christmas Town, and business is brisk at Mrs. Claus’s Treasures, a gift and décor shop owned by Merry Wilkinson. The local amateur dramatic society is intensely preparing a special musical production of A Christmas Carol. But it’s not a happy set, as rivalries between cast and crew threaten the production.

Tensions come to a head when a member of the group is found dead shortly after a shopping excursion to Mrs. Claus’s Treasures. Was someone looking to cut out the competition? Everyone in the cast and crew is a potential suspect, including Aline, Merry’s mother, and Merry’s shop assistant Jackie O’Reilly, who was desperate for a starring role.

It could be curtains for Christmas—and for Merry—unless the killer can be ferreted out of the wings.

With all the guests at Sara and Sean’s wedding suspected of murder, her walk down the aisle will need to wait…

Darlene wasn’t the most loved person in the small town of Cotton Spring Falls, but rumor has it that she refused the offer of a big franchise to buy her bakery. Did they go so far as murder to put her out of business?

But when it’s discovered their wedding cake was poisoned, Sara and Sean could have been the intended victims all along. Did Darlene stumble upon the killer’s conspiracy and they silenced her before she could reveal their secret? Is it someone on the invitation list or the mysterious wedding crasher?

As long as the coffee is hot, and Sara has Sean and her beagle, Magnum, at her side, she isn’t going down in a heap of tulle and lace.

by Mark Waddell

The Body in the Back Garden (A Crescent Cove Mystery)

Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 272 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1639104402

.

In this queer cozy series debut perfect for fans of Ellen Byron and Ellery Adams, Luke Tremblay is about to discover that Crescent Cove has more than its fair share of secrets…and some might be deadlier than others.

Crescent Cove, a small hamlet on Vancouver Island, is the last place out-of-work investigative journalist Luke Tremblay ever wanted to see again. He used to spend summers here, until his family learned that he was gay and rejected him. Now, following his aunt’s sudden death, he’s inherited her entire estate, including her seaside cottage and the antiques shop she ran for forty years in Crescent Cove. Luke plans to sell everything and head back to Toronto as soon as he can…but Crescent Cove isn’t done with him just yet.

When a stranger starts making wild claims about Luke’s aunt, Luke sends him packing. The next morning, though, Luke discovers that the stranger has returned, and now he’s lying dead in the back garden. To make matters worse, the officer leading the investigation is a handsome Mountie with a chip on his shoulder who seems convinced that Luke is the culprit. If he wants to prove his innocence and leave this town once and for all, Luke will have to use all his skills as a journalist to investigate the colorful locals while coming to terms with his own painful past.

There are secrets buried in Crescent Cove, and the more Luke digs, the more he fears they might change the town forever.

~~~~~
Enjoy this peek inside The Body in the Back Garden:
The drive back to the cottage took no more than five minutes, and when I got there, I found a Jeep Wrangler with RCMP markings waiting for me. My heart sank. I really didn’t want a third encounter with the police today.
With some reluctance, I trudged around the side of the cottage and found Jack Munro waiting for me, brawny arms folded across his tactical vest as he gazed out at the sea. My heart sank even further, but also fluttered a little as well. I had no idea how to behave around him now that I knew he was my old friend.
As I approached, shoes crunching on the stone path, he turned to face me. I paused. Jack looked mad. His square jaw was clenched and his eyebrows were drawn downwards in a fierce glower.
Uh oh.
“We need to talk,” he informed me, and I nodded jerkily after a moment’s hesitation.
“Sure. Okay. Do you want to come inside?”
With a shake of his head, Jack then advanced towards me until he was close enough that I had to look up into his face. “I want to know why you lied to me.”
I had to work moisture back into my mouth before I could reply. “What do you mean?”
“I spoke with Aleesha Perkins.” At my blank stare, he added, “Her mom runs the greengrocers in town. She delivered some groceries here yesterday.”
Oh yeah. I nodded again, mutely.
“Aleesha claims that she witnessed you assault Joel Mackenzie and then threaten him.” Jack’s resonant baritone was tight with anger. “Is that true?”
“I wouldn’t say assault, exactly,” I hedged. “I did push him, that’s true.”
“She says you pushed him off the front porch and that he landed on his back on the ground.”
“Uh. Yes.” Jack’s eyes narrowed and I added hurriedly, “But he provoked me. He called my aunt a thief and said she got what was coming to her. I…I got upset and pushed him harder than I intended.”
“And then threatened him.”
“No!” I protested. “No, I just told him that if he came back here he’d regret it.” I paused. “Okay. That sounds bad, I admit. But I didn’t mean anything by it. It wasn’t a threat.”
Jack said nothing. His features, familiar and yet not, were completely blank.
On a rising tide of panic, I reached out involuntarily and grasped his forearm. “Jack, please. Please believe me. I did not kill Joel Mackenzie. I didn’t see him again until I found his body this morning. I know how this looks, but…”
Jack stepped back from me, breaking my hold on his arm. “You assaulted and threatened a man who later turned up dead on your property, Luke.” His voice was cool now, dispassionate. “And you have no alibi for last night. How this looks is extremely bad for you.”
My feeling of panic increased as I stared up at him. “But you know me. You know I would never—”
He cut me off with brutal finality. “I used to know you. I’m not sure I do anymore.”
I had no response to that. There was nothing left to say. My panic slowly subsided, leaving hurt and fear in its wake.
A deep silence fell between us. Waves crashed in the distance and gulls screeched overhead. “Is there anything else you want to tell me?” he finally asked. “Because if there is anything, you need to tell me now.”
I shook my head once. “There isn’t anything,” I said, barely able to speak through the tightness in my throat.
He nodded without taking his eyes off me. “I strongly advise you to stay put here at the cottage while we continue our investigation.”
I said nothing, and after a long pause Jack brushed past me as he headed back to his Jeep. I watched him go with something close to despair.
I was now the only suspect in a murder, and the person in charge of investigating that murder clearly disliked me. I wanted to trust that Jack would figure out who the killer was rather than pin this on me, but given our recent interactions, that seemed far from certain. If I didn’t want to end up in prison, there was only one option left.
I needed to solve this myself.
Cocktails & Casualties
by Carly Wayne
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Synopsis
Teddy Aarons is a nomad, using her bartending skills as an excuse to move to a new luxury resort with each change of the season. But when she finds herself stuck on the remote island of Mahina Cay, she finds refuge in the quirky little Township of Crooked Cove.
Crooked Cove is a village of expatriates from various countries, and the people are welcoming, but she only intends to stay long enough to make the money to get off the island and back to her real life.. However, when one of the village’s most distinguished citizens turns up dead, it’s up to her to either solve the case or become a permanent resident of the slammer!
With her new friend Jasmine at her side, Teddy will do whatever it takes to shake out the truth and stir up the real killer to clear her name. Will she manage to keep herself out of lockup, or will she end up under the influence of the Mahina Cay Prison?
 Enjoy this peek inside:
“Teddy, what are you thinking?”
“I’m thinking you should give me the pictures and the phone and wait here,” she said.
Jazz pulled her purse close to her. “Oh hell no. If you are going to question Frannie, you’re not leaving me sitting out of the action. I’m coming with you.”
Knowing it was pointless to argue, Teddy sighed. “Alright. But you have to promise me to behave, Jazz. Let me do the talking. We are going to try the soft approach first.”
The look in Jazz’s eyes told Teddy she was not planning on staying silent. She was chomping at the bit to back Frannie into a corner.
Frannie stood and walked to the ladies’ room, and they followed. Teddy counted to twenty, and then walked in with Jazz behind her. The room was empty except for the two of them, and Frannie was in the last stall. Teddy pointed to the door, and Jazz silently locked it. They leaned against the door and waited for Frannie to emerge….
