Emma Blackwood’s favorite pastime is solving literary murder mysteries…until the body in her living room makes everything a little too real.

When Emma comes to the Black Hills to work at her Aunt Rose’s B&B, the Sweetbrier Inn, she is hoping for a quiet break from the corporate treadmill. But she hadn’t expected murder and intrigue to mar this peaceful setting.

As she wades through too many clues to identify the murderer, she soon finds that the culprit isn’t stopping at only one homicide and may even have placed Emma herself on the list of targets. With the help of her friend Becky, and a deputy sheriff who grudgingly lets them join in on the investigation, Emma tracks down the killer. But will it be in time to save the next victim?

~~~~~
Enjoy this peek inside:
She grinned as if it wasn’t o’dark-thirty on a chilly spring morning.
“Oh, wow, you must be Emma.” She stuck out a hand. “Hi. I’m Becky Graves. I deliver the baked goods for the inn every morning.” I shook her hand as she kept talking without seeming to take a breath. “Although it seems Wil could bake, you know, with all his chef’s credentials, but he says it’s beneath him. He’s a chef-” she punctuated the word with air quotes – “not a baker. But hey, it’s business for our café, so I’m not knocking it. Anyway, I’ve been wanting to meet you ever since Rose said you were coming. Don’t you just love this place?”
“Yes.” I jumped in before she could go on. “Wil, do you have any coffee?”
He poured a cup and stuck it in my hand, then pushed Becky and I into the hall without a word. The door swung on its two-way hinges.
I held the cup up to my nose and took a deep breath. Hot. Strong. No sugar. No cream. I closed my eyes. Heaven. My day could start now.
“Cal told me what happened up here last night.”
My eyes popped open. “You know Cal?”
“He’s my cousin. He came by the café for supper last night and told us what happened.” My face must have shown my shock. “Oh, we won’t tell anyone else, don’t worry.”
“So, who knows?”
“Only me, Gran, my sister Josie and her husband, and their kids. And old Sadie, but she doesn’t talk to anyone except her cats.”
“You’re telling me that he told the entire town of Paragon.”
She nodded and led the way toward the dining room. “But we won’t spread the word, so don’t worry. We’re as silent as the grave.” She grinned. “Grave? Get it? Our last name is Graves.”
Sneaky’s Supernatural Mystery And Other Cobble Cove Stories
by Debbie De Louise
.
Sneaky’s Supernatural Mystery and Other Cobble Cove Stories
Cozy Mystery Collection
Setting – New York
Solstice Publishing
Number of Pages ~260
This collection of short stories includes four previously published Cobble Cove mysteries that appeared exclusively as ebooks along with a new story. The collection features the award-winning Sneaky’s Christmas Mystery, Sneaky’s Summer Mystery, KittyKai’s Easter Mystery, Barking Up the Wrong Tree, and the new title story, Sneaky’s Supernatural Mystery.
Each of these stories includes a note from the author explaining her inspiration for it and a cover image. If you’re a fan of the series, a cozy mystery lover, and/or a feline fancier, you’ll enjoy these mysteries that feature the pets in starring roles with Alicia, the librarian.
~~~~~

Enjoy this peek inside:

“Have you ever heard of Starlight?”

“Star light? Sure. Is it an astronomy program?”

Nancy smiled and laughed lightly. “No. Starlight[ is a psychic. She has a very popular podcast and has appeared at several libraries. She’s also worked with the police finding missing persons. Ramsay’s acquainted with her.”

Ron Ramsay, the town’s sheriff, was a long-time friend of Alicia’s. He was also married to Alicia’s best friend, Gilly, who ran the Cobble Inn and worked part-time at the library.

“Does Gilly know her, too?”

“Probably. You can ask her when she comes in today. Anyway,” Nancy pushed back a dark curl, “I can start advertising for her appearance. I’ve added the date to our program calendar and will send out an eblast to our newsletter list.”

Alicia didn’t know how she felt about having a psychic hold a program at the library, but she trusted Nancy’s judgment. “Sounds good. Will she be doing any predictions?”

“That’s part of her, uh, act, Alicia. She takes random people from the audience and does a reading for them.”

“Does she use tarot cards or a crystal ball?”

Nancy shook her head. “She only uses their aura and vibrations she gets from it to make predictions about them.”

Alicia was open to new ideas and things that couldn’t be explained by science.  but she was also skeptical about psychics who used tricks as deftly as magicians to con people into believing their extraordinary talents.

“I guess that could be fun if it isn’t taken too seriously. It might be a nice way to get people back into the library, but please make sure that you include a disclaimer that this is an entertainment program and the library isn’t responsible for the accuracy of any predictions the psychic makes.”

Nancy nodded, sending her curls jumping again. “Got it, Alicia. Thank you.” She stood up from her seat.

After she left, Alicia finished her coffee and paper. Then she turned to Sneaky. “Did you hear that, Sneak? A psychic is coming to the library. I’ve got to see what Gilly knows about this Starlight.” Alicia glanced at the pendulum-like, tail-swishing, google-eyed black and white cat clock on her wall. “She should be coming in right about now.”

Sneaky, awakened from his dream of KittyKai, his pretty calico friend and fellow cat sleuth from the inn, followed Alicia as she went downstairs to speak with her friend.

Frances Wynn, the American-born Countess of Harleigh, returns in Dianne Freeman’s charming, lighthearted mystery series set in Victorian England, and finds her wedding day overshadowed by murder . . .

On the eve of her marriage to George Hazelton, Frances has a great deal more on her mind than flowers and seating arrangements. The Connors and the Bainbridges, two families of American robber barons, have taken up residence in London, and their bitter rivalry is spilling over into the highest social circles. At the request of her brother, Alonzo, who is quite taken with Miss Madeline Connor, Frances has invited the Connor family to her wedding. Meanwhile, Frances’s mother has invited Mr. Bainbridge, and Frances fears the wedding may end up being newspaper-worthy for all the wrong reasons.

On the day itself, Frances is relieved to note that Madeline’s father is not among the guests assembled at the church. The reason for his absence, however, turns out to be most unfortunate: Mr. Connor is found murdered in his home. More shocking still, Alonzo is caught at the scene, holding the murder weapon.

Powerful and ruthless, Connor appears to have amassed a wealth of enemies alongside his fortune. Frances and George agree to put their wedding trip on hold to try and clear Alonzo’s name. But there are secrets to sift through, not just in the Bainbridge and Connor families, but also in their own. And with a killer determined to evade discovery at any cost—even if it means taking another life—Frances’s first days as a newlywed will be perilous indeed . . .

“I love this cozy mystery! It is full of suspense, action-packed, fast pace with that small-town feeling. I love the characters, I have to admit, I fell in love with Elmo on the spot! I loved Nikki’s spunk and determination. She keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire book! And I usually try to pick up all if the clues and figure out whodunnit but this story kept taking twists and turns that I was surprised. This is just type of cozy mysteries I love to read.” – 5-Star review by Splashes of Joy

“An excellent blend of mystery and suspense with comic relief and romance…. Lauren has a great way of balancing this without taking away from the story. Olivia Swann has returned to her hometown after college and realized her dream of opening an animal hospital – the Whiskers and Tails Vet and Boarding Hospital. When she hires a friend at her college reunion to join as partner at the hospital, things take a dangerous turn as suspicions of stolen cats begin to emerge. More than just her business is threatened when her new partner begins to ask questions about the wealthiest and most well-known family in the county. Olivia has a mystery on her hands while she deals with her loveable parents and a smitten love interest she doesn’t quite know how to handle. With the help of her friends–her two cats, Fiona and Wilson, an old Beagle named Barnabus and his owner Tom Barnaby–Olivia must try to solve a mystery that hits a little too close to home.

Olivia is a reluctant heroine in this whodunnit as she is determined to find her friend’s killer no matter the cost. How will she juggle work, crime solving and an admirer all at one time? Find out in this fun and fast-paced mystery from Laura Ball.

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?

I did a lot of research for Whiskers in Trouble actually.  I research cat breeds and which ones were most popular, most expensive, rare, etc. I also researched a lot about common illnesses to animals and how they’re treated by a veterinarian.  I also relied on my experience as a pet owner of a cat and most recently, a puppy.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?

I do read as much as I can because I enjoy it, and because I feel reading other authors helps my own writing. Seeing how other authors develop characters and work out plot points and twists and turns. It’s fun and exciting and educational actually.

My favorite genre is mystery because I love to immerse myself into a story and try to figure out where the story is going and revel in the characters–some I like and some I learn to hate based on the storyline. I love to be intrigued and put myself in the heroine or hero’s shoes and see if I can solve the mystery first.

Pen or type writer or computer?

I use both pen and paper and a computer.

Do you have any advice to offer for new authors?

Beginning is the hardest part.  Just take the first step and put something, anything, on the page.  Once you begin it gets easier.  Don’t give up when you get stuck, look at it from a different point of view or a different character’s point of view.  Try to work things out from all angles.  Sometimes things are revealed from a perspective you didn’t have before.

What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?

I like to outline with pen and paper, list the main points and scenes and main characters. Then I like to just dive right into writing using my outline as a guide. I find when typing on my computer that the story unfolds easier for me and the story ends up going to places I never intended but works out. My characters also develop the same way–by just diving in and seeing what ends up on the screen. I usually start with Chapter 1 and go from there following my outline but in writing book two of the Whiskers and Tails mysteries series, I’ve complete more in depth outlining for certain scenes and then worked outward from the scene and sort of filled in the blanks with secondary plots. Then once I’ve reached that part in the outline I edit a lot and smooth out any holes–hopefully.

Do you believe in writer’s block?

I do believe in writer’s block! I feel I once had it for 6 months when writing this book! I got to a certain point in the story and just could not figure out where to go from there. I had focused so much on one particular section of the book that I realized I hadn’t fully thought the rest of the book all the way through. I became stuck. I sat staring at this half-written story and wasn’t sure where to take the characters and the story. I couldn’t envision the ending or what I wanted to happen to the characters. It was a low point for me and my writing. I started to have doubts about being able to finish the book. I doubted my ability to write and depression set in. I had to step away from writing for a time.

But the book and the story and characters kept haunting me. I would find myself reviewing plot points and how a character reacted to a scene. I would catch myself thinking about certain twists or clues. Once I finally was able to see beyond the scope of the work I had already done, it became easier to focus on the continuation of the plot. I put myself in each character’s shoes and figured out what I wanted that character to do, to learn, to be, to experience.  It slowly became easier to move forward with this storyline or that character trait or whatever I was working on next.

I experienced writer’s block more than once but I learned to take a step back and give myself the time to analyze and think beyond the point of where I was stuck. Once I am able to allow myself that time and room to think, things become clear again, and I’m able to continue on.
