Perfect for fans of Paige Shelton, an Alaskan tour guide is bracing for winter when she realizes that the wolves aren’t the only predators on the prowl.

With boat tours off the coast of Alaska shut down for the winter, tour guide Stacie Calder is joining the dedicated team at the Juneau Wildlife World, a wild animal sanctuary. Along with Sasha, her husky companion, she’s prepared to spend the long season in the scenic park. But not everyone is so chipper about the newcomers—least of all, Stacie’s new manager, Oliver Brownling. He constantly gives Stacie a hard time, specifically because she brought Sasha along with her. That is, until his mauled body is found in a remote part of the sanctuary containing wolves.

When it becomes clear that a human was responsible for the brutal murder, all eyes are on Stacie. Encouraged by her friend, Officer Liam Amaruq of the Alaskan State Troopers, Stacie is resolved to find the murderer but knows that her investigation will be difficult with the long suspect list she’s made. Did the sanctuary director plot to get rid of Oliver? Or maybe it was one of Oliver’s coworkers, upset over a missed promotion? Stacie wonders about some of the newer employees, especially since Oliver’s personality made it easy to make enemies.

With the weather worsening, Stacie and Sasha are forced to stay at the sanctuary with the wolves—and her colleagues. As the storm gets worse, it’s clear that this killer has a taste for blood and may strike again. Will Stacie be able to find the murderer, or will the hunter become the hunted?

MY REVIEW

I know this was tagged as a cozy mystery, but I felt it was more of a straight up mystery. Some situations didn’t feel as light as they would be in a cozy. That being said, I did enjoy the mystery. I liked the idea of Stacie. She’s a tour guide in Alaska. When the tours shut down for the winter, she opted to sign on with a wild animal sanctuary. She’d volunteered there before so she knew quite a bit about what was required. What she wasn’t expecting was landing on the suspect list when the manager she’d butted heads with was found dead. At first glance it looked like the native wolf population as culprits but quickly turned to a human killer.

I enjoy stories with amateur sleuths. Hence my love for cozies. This is where I struggled with the book. Stacie was so confrontational. Going around accusing people of the murder. Sure, she wanted her name cleared, but you’d think she’d realize that puts her in the killer’s path. Other than that, I had fun with my own list of suspects. As for who the killer was, I got it wrong. No worries though. I still had fun.

4 STARS

Butterfly Betrayal: A Seneca James Mystery

Raising butterflies is peaceful and calm, until someone dies.

Majestic Monarch Butterfly Farm might flitter away forever. That is, unless Seneca James acquires the property next door. She and Winifred, her costume-wearing cat, have a fight on their hands. Their land sits next to a milkweed-covered field, essential for monarchs. If she’s unsuccessful in buying it, her precious, winged friends won’t survive. When people end up dead on her farmland, Seneca is suspected of murder.

What is it about the milkweed field that’s worth killing for? And who’s the murderer?

~~~~~
Enjoy this peek inside:
Needing to get back to the caterpillars, I headed to the greenhouse. Winifred was already there. She’d done that several times lately. I’m not sure how she was getting inside since I always shut the door.
She greeted me with a shrill, scolding meow, like I’d stuck her in there and gone off and left her, even though I’d cuddled her only a little while earlier. Picking her up, I held her, so we were eye to eye. “Listen, kitty, I don’t know how you’re getting in here, but it needs to stop. It’s not that I’m trying to be mean, but it’s my job to protect you. Certain things in here are not for you to play with. Or sleep on. Or eat.”
My cat thrashed her tail back and forth like a broom, until it brushed against my hand. Did she think it would injure me? I wouldn’t tell her that her fluffy tail was as soft as feathers that tickled so bad, I nearly dropped her.
On the other side of seventy, Maddie Sparks decides to spice up her life by changing her writing interests from cozy mysteries to romance. She also determines her appearance should reflect this transformation in her writing career. A sassy new haircut and more fashionable clothes complete the newer Maddie Sparks. Before she can begin this new chapter in her life, a stabbing death in the quiet country village she has made her home shocks the town’s residents.
When her son is accused of the murder, Maddie and the acting county sheriff come together to find the real killer. Their relationship soon blooms into more than one of shared determination to solve the murder. As they enjoy a hike in a nearby park, someone shoots the sheriff, barely missing Maddie. Another killer could be loose in the area, and the person may be closer to Maddie than she realizes. Maddie discovers parts of herself she didn’t know existed: real life romance with the sheriff, a talent for sleuthing and room in her life for a fuzzy, orange cat named “Spike.” This recent lease on life may be more exciting and more dangerous than Maddie expects.
Interview with Author Leslie A. Diehl
Hello and Welcome back to the blog!
I am happy to have you here again and with a new book and series. Congratulations!
Before we get too far into the new book can you catch us up on how many series you have? I have lost count.
I’ve been busy since I retired to take up writing cozy mysteries. It has been a lot of fun, far better than my first career as a professor and college administrator, although I did love being in the classroom and working with college students.
My first series was only two books featuring a craft brewer; A Deadly Draught and Poisoned Pairings. I had a good time doing the research for the book, meeting brewers and sampling their product!
I followed this series with The Big Lake Murder mysteries set in rural Florida, the Laura Murphy murder mysteries based on my experiences as a college professor, and the Eve Appel mysteries which are set in rural Florida. I’ve moved my setting for the Maddie Sparks mysteries back to Upstate New York where I now live year round.
And, of course, I have numerous short stories published in various anthologies. To see all my work visit my website www.lesleyadiehl.com.
Now that we know what you’ve been up to lets chat about Maddie’s book.
From mystery writer to romance. Is there a little romance writer lurking in Lesley?
Well, the book is still a cozy mystery, but I have thrown in a bit of romance for my seventy plus protagonist. I have her fall for a younger man! He’s actually only a few years her junior (maybe  seven or so), but I like the idea that age is of no consequence for them. The romance seemed to emerge organically for Maddie as she begins writing outside her genre (because she’s a cozy mystery writer also), but she’s grown bored with the genre and wants something a little more….racy. As for me, I will continue to write cozy mysteries. I’ve always included romance in all my series.
Can you share a bit of the process of developing a new series?
I looked back on my work and realized half my characters were much younger than me, some were of retirement age, but aside from some characters in a series of short stories, none of my protagonists were close to my age. I thought it was time I brought a smart, active, snoopy older woman to the page. It was a natural to use my own perspective on life at this age to create the character. I paired Maddie with the retired county sheriff (the younger man) and included Maddie’s family as important characters in the story lines.
The first book is really a path to discovery for Maddie. She finds she’s still interested in love even after a disastrous marriage, that her mind is sharp and curious, making solving a murder her new mission in life, and she adopts a cat although she’s never had a pet before. Finding new aspects of herself is what we all hope for when we age, so I’m certain this series will bring joy to those who find a role model in Maddie and those younger folks who hope to continue growing and changing in their lives.
Did the idea come from any part of a previous series?
No.
Maddie sounds like a strong leading lady. Can you share with us and introduce us to her fellow cast?
Maddie has two sons from her marriage. The eldest, Geoffrey, and his wife Abigail own a real estate and property management company in Maddie’s village. They are rather traditional people. They work hard and are devoted to their daughter, Sara. Maddie’s other son, Richard, is a defense attorney in the area. He’s handsome, urbane and single. Sara, Maddie’s only grandchild, is a beautiful young woman, tall, slender, unlike our tiny Maddie in physical appearance, but much to her parents’ consternation, Sara has the same curious mind that her grandmother has and the same interest in taking down criminals. Maddie worries Sara’s curiosity might put her in danger.
Zack Montgomery, a former county sheriff, has come out of retirement to investigate a local murder. He and Maddie meet at the crime scene and, like her name, sparks of passion fly between the two.
One supporting character which I will develop more in the next books in the series is a woman (Jane) around the same age as Maddie. Soon a friendship develops between the two, another signal that new friends are possible even at Maddie’s age.
I am curious about the cover and a few questions.
I am guessing there might be a clue or two hidden. Am I right?
The cat on the cover is meant to be Spike, the cat Maddie finds and adopts. He is located center stage on the cover because he is at the heart of finding the murderer. It was my intention to include a cat in this series as I’ve not done that in my previous work. However, I wanted the cat to be a partner in solving the murder and Spike, as readers will see, is certainly key in solving the mystery.
Maddie’s house is located on the creek that runs through her village, and because much of the action occurs in her home, the cottage on the stream pictured on the cover is important.
I love the title too. Can you tell us about it? Home much input did you have? Did the title come first or after you were into writing the story?
With this publisher, Camel Press, I determine the title. I cannot tell you everything about the tile except to say it makes reference to the cat’s name (Spike). Beyond that, you have to read the book to understand.
Tell us about Spike.
Maddie found Spike, a fluffy orange fella, at the scene of the murder, hiding in a closet in the bedroom of the murdered man. One of the detectives at the scene wants to take Spike off to the local rescue group, but, perhaps because Maddie dislikes the detective’s attitude about cats (and Spike seems to agree with her), she takes Spike home with her intending to see if the cat belongs to anyone in the neighborhood or is the cat an orphan because Spike’s owner had been murdered. Little does Maddie know that she is now a pet parent. She has a lot to learn about cats and especially about Spike. To her surprise, the two of them grow increasingly close and along with the county sheriff,  they become a crime fighting trio.
One more question because I know you are busy and I think it is snack time.
What is your favorite snack?
Recently, I’ve found I love a chewy ginger cookie. I have one with my afternoon tea. Maddie loves tea also and, like me, she never finds time to bake anything to go with her afternoon cuppa, so she buys her cookies at the supermarket or the local bakery.
Opps I lied. Sorry.
What is your idea of a perfect date?
A good movie (is there any such thing anymore?) and movie popcorn. Yum! If not that, then a cuppa and a scone.
Would Maddie agree?
Maddie would prefer the tea. And a murder to solve with Spike and Zack.
 Thanks for inviting me to talk with you. I enjoyed it. We should get together for tea some afternoon.
Crime and Parchment: A Rare Books Cozy Mystery
by Daphne Silver
Crime and Parchment: A Rare Books Cozy Mystery
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – Fictional town of Rose Mallow, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay
Level Best Books (November 21, 2023)
Print length ‏ : ‎ 226 pages
Digital ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0CKVBLPCY
.
Rare books librarian Juniper Blume knows this much… an ancient Celtic manuscript shouldn’t be in a Maryland cemetery. But that’s exactly what her brother-in-law claims.
Last year, Juniper saw the 1,200-year-old Book of Kells in Ireland. She learned how their bejeweled covers were stolen centuries ago, never to be seen again. So how could they have ended up in Rose Mallow, a small Chesapeake Bay town? Being Jewish, the Book of Kells might not be her sacred text, but as a rare books librarian, the ancient book is still sacred to her, making it important to Juniper to find out the truth.
Rose Mallow is the same place where Juniper used to summer with her sister Azalea and their grandmother Zinnia, known as Nana Z. Ever since Nana Z passed away, Juniper’s avoided returning, but her curiosity is greater than her grief, so she heads down in her vintage convertible with her rescue dog Clover.
Juniper discovers that her sister Azalea has transformed their grandmother’s Queen Anne style mansion into the Wildflower Inn, backing up to the Chesapeake Bay. Although Juniper isn’t much of a cook, Azalea has kept their grandmother’s legacy alive, filling the house with the smells of East European Jewish treats, like sweet kugels and tzimmes cake. Will coming back here feel like returning home or fill Juniper with a deeper sorrow? Can she apologize to her sister for not being there when she was needed most?
Enjoy this peek inside:
My 1965, robin’s egg blue convertible backfired as I parked in front of the Wildflower Inn. The noise set off Clover barking in the backseat. Not exactly the quiet homecoming I’d hoped for. I jumped out of my Karmann-Ghia – or “KG” as I’d nicknamed her – to check under the hood, hoping I wouldn’t need to get the roadster serviced yet again. No idea where that money would come from.
A screaming, ranting madwoman poured out of a neighboring house. Maybe in her late seventies, she brandished a large umbrella. I dropped the hood to find the umbrella pointing at me. Clover – all twenty pounds of him – jumped out and started growling.
“Easy, boy,” I said.
“You shoot something off, Missy? Here to cause trouble? Because I’m on the board of the Friends of the Rose Mallow Police.” the woman said. She wore a perfectly fitted Mamie Eisenhower pink skirt suit with enormous pearls – straight out of the 1950s. Her white bouffant billowed around her head. She reminded me of a researcher I’d helped earlier that day at the Library of Congress. That woman had been a murder mystery author looking for books about early detectives. This woman looked like she wanted to murder someone – namely me.
Genre: Historical Holiday Romance
Synopsis
Lady Rosalind Chatham journeys with her family to Weston Castle to wed an ancient earl on Christmas day. Yearning for true love, she falls for the duke, her stepfather’s cousin, while preparing for her nuptials.
Lady Rosalind entrances the Duke of Weston. Concerned for her future with the tempestuous earl, he can’t afford to get involved. The fines and scandal will be too great for a man of his wealth and power.
When the truth comes to light, and he almost loses her forever, he finds he cannot afford to give less than his whole heart.
Enjoy this peek inside:
Careful not to make a sound, she sat on the window ledge and slipped her feet out the window. Turning to face the interior of the room, she inched her hips over the window ledge. She slipped on the ice, frozen to the brick outside the window, and slid down faster than she intended, cringing when the silk of her day gown ripped.
Panic gripped her like a cinched corset. She did not fear falling. No. The fine sheen of terror covering her brow appeared out of fear she might wake the earl.
Catching the edge of the brick where she lay against it halfway between her bosom and her waist, she sucked in a deep breath, conscious she must present a sight with her skirts bunched up and wedged between her and the window ledge. Her white pantalets and silk-stockinged legs dangled as she maneuvered her hands so she could drop to the ground. Thank the gods no one wandered the flower gardens beneath her to see her unladylike display.
Her prayer of gratitude stopped dead, and she received the shock of her life when a large pair of hands caught her about the waist!
She froze in terror, not daring to breathe.
“Lady Rosalind, how unexpected of you to drop by like this.” The duke’s deep voice laughed at her as he held her still.
She swallowed her cry of surprise and choked. God, what Cousin Lucius must be thinking about her right now.
About Author Virginia Barlow
I have always loved reading romance novels. I used to sneak into my mom’s room as a young girl and read them while she was gone. As I grew older, my reading and tastes expanded to sci-fi, dystopian, paranormal, and fantasy.
I considered becoming an author in my late twenties but as a busy mother with toddlers, I didn’t have the time nor the energy.
Later, in my fifties, I decided to give it a try and have enjoyed every moment of it since. I recently signed my fourteenth contract and am doing my happy dance as I type this. My husband of forty-one years is my greatest support as are all my kids. Most of them are grown and carving out lives for themselves. They are the beat of my heart and with every grandchild, the rhythm gets stronger. I enjoy every moment of my life.
Today is the big day!
Adventurous and passionate Poppy
can’t wait to go to the art museum with her fourth-grade class. All the
different masterpieces are just waiting to be seen. But when Poppy leans a bit
too close to a painting, to her surprise she falls inside! With the help of
some unlikely friends, she must travel from one painting to another in a
colorful quest to get back home.
From famous pieces like American
Gothic
Water LiliesNighthawks, and many
more, Poppy Through the Paintings is a fun and imaginative way
to explore art with kids that will make them want to dive headfirst into
art-just like Poppy!
.
MY REVIEW
Poppy is so excited. Her fourth grade class is going to the museum and she gets to see lots of paintings by famous artists. There are so many. She really loves one by Van Gogh and leans in to get a closer look. Oh my! She falls into the painting and now she leaps from one to the next, meeting the people in each painting and hoping one will point the way back out.
Author Julie Lucht created a delightful young girl in her character, Poppy. Fearless and curious.  And the illustrations by Dan McGeehan were beautiful. So colorful and wonderous.  The story was a grand adventure. Sure to delight young readers and perhaps instill some curiosity in them when they go to a museum. I wonder what they might imagine when they lean in for a closer look. Maybe an adventure as grand as Poppy’s.
The Medusa Murders by Joy Ann Ribar Banner
The Medusa Murders
by Joy Ann Ribar
November 13-24, 2023 Virtual Book Tour
.
Synopsis:
Professor Bay Browning has more snake problems than the Garden of Eden in this twisted mystery. The English Literature instructor is busy preparing for a new semester when a serial killer, known as Medusa, bites her quiet life in the behind. A wild ride ensues when Bay and her grifter sister, Cass, assist a perturbed Detective Downing with the investigation. What else can the sisters do, once they become Medusa’s targets? Will the slithering trail of mythology, art history, and family secrets help them catch a killer before she turns them to stone?
Praise for The Medusa Murders:
“This first-in-series held me captive on the edge of my seat where I frantically turned the pages of this intricately crafted story, desperate to solve the mystery. And, oh, what a revelation it is!” ~ Laurie Buchanan, author of the Sean McPherson crime thriller novels
“A gritty and intense mystery that grabs you and won’t let go until the end. The personal relationships are complex, just like many in real life, and the familial drama pulls you in.” Kelly Young, author of A Travel Writer mystery series and Haunted and Harassed paranormal mystery series
“Ribar effectively wraps mythology, academia, archeology, and a touch of paranormal phenomena together to produce a more than satisfying read. Looking forward to spending more time with Bay.” ~ Debra H. Goldstein, author of The Sarah Blair Mysteries
“A well-written, fast-paced and vibrant debut novel. A highly recommended new series.” ~ Christine DeSmet, writing coach and author of The Fudge Shop Mystery series and Mischief in Moonstone series
MY REVIEW
I read a lot of crime and mystery stories. Can’t get enough of them. It must be that amateur sleuth inside me. I want to dig deep, follow bread crumbs, guess who’s the bad guy or gal. Sometimes I get so caught up in the book that I want so bad to step into the character’s shoes. Solve it myself. That’s how it was in The Medusa Murders.
Profess Bay Browning is busy getting ready for the next semester when a killer has other ideas. Dubbed Medusa, the serial killer has added Bay to the menu of potential victims to be killed. Along with her grifter sister, Cass. Bay sticks her nose in the investigation, much to Detective Downings annoyance.
There was so much to like about this mystery. The characters. The mix of archaeology and mythology. A truly bad, bad guy. A convoluted not easily solved mystery. And did I mention the characters?
It’s exciting to find and try a new series and author. I had high hopes for The Medusa Murders and Author Joy Ann Ribar delivered.
Back at the parking space, Bay opened the passenger door and looked at the white particles in brighter light. They were sprinkled like powdered sugar over the right side of the back seat, directly underneath the bag of clothes Bay had gone through last night. She felt certain the particles must have come from the lululemon coat pocket. She remembered seeing Detective Harris turn the pocket inside out over one of the evidence bags. Had there been feathers in either of the pockets? The empty parking lot at Giorgio’s put a smile on Bay’s face when she parked the Subaru a few minutes later. She was impatient to get to the bottom of the dry-cleaning mix-up and anxious to shake some details out of Giorgio. She could see him standing behind the customer counter, grooming his dark slicked-back hair and straightening his blue and white polo shirt that matched the building. “Good morning, L.L. I see you have nothing in your hands, so what can I do for you today?” Giorgio’s velvety voice was smoother than grease. “Cut the crap, Giorgio. You know why I’m here. Obviously, you sent the police to see me about my lululemon. What’s the story?” Bay frowned and her dark eyes narrowed. Giorgio backed away as if Bay might punch him, marring his handsome face. He was Stasia’s youngest brother, probably around Bay’s age. Bay had learned more Andino family facts than she cared to after attending the mandatory gatherings at Stasia’s home the past year. He held up both hands, placatingly. “I’ll tell you what I know, which isn’t much. My niece, Aria, was working on the day of the mix-up. She’s in back. I’ll go get her.” “Get my lululemon, too, while you’re back there.” Might as well kill two birds as they say. Aria was short and pretty with wide dark eyes and thick black hair pulled into a neat bun on top of her head. She wore the same blue and white polo over hospital-style light blue pants. Bay guessed she was barely out of high school. What was that expression: fear or guilt on Aria’s face? “Good morning, Professor Browning. My uncle is looking for your raincoat.” Aria didn’t look Bay in the eyes. Dialing down from accusatory to neutral tone, Bay began her questions. “I understand you were working when my lululemon was switched with the one the police confiscated.” No point in lollygagging her way to the matter at hand. Aria looked down at her fingers, which were drumming methodically on the counter as if playing a tune on a piano. One hand stopped while the other slowed to a quiet tapping. “Yes. There were three other coats almost identical to yours when he brought in the one the police were after.” Bay registered the information. “Who is he that brought the coat in, please?” The girl seemed quite fragile, so kid gloves were in order for this interrogation. Bay was accustomed to communicating with students Aria’s age, and she knew the best methods for building trust and rapport. The finger tapping continued at a leisurely pace. Bay could almost pick out a rhumba beat. Aria continued to focus on her fingers, not looking up. “He said his name was Chance.” She closed her eyes, conjuring his image. “He was wearing a black hoodie but took the hood off to talk to me. He had short dreadlocks swept up to one side and had smart glasses on. You know, his glasses made him look smart.” She smiled, caught up in the memory. It was clear to Bay the boy had charmed Aria, and just maybe she would do anything for him. “Did Chance ask you for a favor, Aria?” She blushed, then turned a deep red. “He used me…” She choked back tears. “Yeah, boys are scum,” Bay empathized, glaring at Giorgio who had emerged from the back room empty-handed. The finger tapping quickened as the incident unfolded, from a waltz to a cha-cha, Aria’s eyes remained closed during the telling. “He asked me if people brought their expensive clothing here. Like could we be trusted with their stuff, you know. He said he had his mom’s lululemon, and he was kind of flirting with me.” She paused, thinking. “I told him we had three of those same coats in the back right now, and they were already cleaned and ready to pick up. I offered to show him, so he would know he could leave his mom’s coat here.” Aria stopped tapping and looked at Bay’s face where empathy greeted her like a warm embrace. “I didn’t know Chance wanted to swap coats until he asked if I could swap one of the clean coats for his mother’s dirty one.” I figured that he was responsible for getting it dirty, and he didn’t want her to know about it. “So, you randomly chose my coat and made the switch.” Bay wanted to sound helpful by filling in details, so Aria’s head shake surprised her. “No. That’s when things got weird. He asked me if we had L.L. Browning’s coat. He specifically wanted to trade his coat for yours.” Giorgio interrupted his niece, casting a warning look with shifty eyes. Bay couldn’t be fooled. “Why didn’t you call me Friday to let me know about the switch or the police? You knew they were coming to question me.” She darted daggers at Giorgio, who winced and backed away. “I didn’t think you were in danger, or I would have called you. How could I know that the lululemon was murder evidence? *** Excerpt from The Medusa Murders by Joy Ann Ribar. Copyright 2023 by Joy Ann Ribar. Reproduced with permission from Joy Ann Ribar. MY REVIEW
I’ve read the third book in this fun series and this newest was every bit as fun.
Steven is a policeman living in the 1930s and Olivia lives in 2014.  In the last book they had quite an adventure solving a crime together. It’s not easy when you have to bounce back and forth in time. Where there’s a will there’s a way and they spent more and more time together. Do I see romance in the air?
Now, they’ve decided to ramp things up a bit. Olivia is going to spend time with Steven at a Christmas party at a Legendary Camps lodge in the Adirondack Mountains in Steven’s time. The party promises all kinds of fun, but then a blizzard hits and the host drops dead. Poisoned I believe. His widow asks Steven to launch an investigation and, along with his partner, Will, and Olivia, he accepts and the sleuthing begins. Oh what fun it is to…… solve a murder in a snowed in lodge with a large list of suspects.
I had a blast. Jumping from one suspect to the next. I couldn’t make up my mind who did it. Had a few at the top of my list. One of them was the right one, which was revealed all wrapped up with a bow on it. I’m excited to read more of the series and see what happens next. Especially between Olivia and Steven. Can they make a relationship work? I’ll be here, waiting to see if they can.
Chapter 1
December 31, 1902 New York City, New York
She was marrying the wrong man. With a silk-gloved hand, Margery Belleville lifted the bottom of her wedding gown and peeked around the heavy, carved doors into the nave of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Several hundred guests—ladies in expensive finery, wool coats trimmed with ermine and fancy hats with brims reaching out over their shoulders, and tuxedoed men in black silk top hats—awaited the wedding of the decade. St. Patrick’s reminded Margery of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris with its Gothic-style pointed arches and rich stained-glass windows set in lacey webs. The soaring, vaulted ceiling, lit by crystal chandeliers suspended on long rope-like cables, rose hundreds of feet in the air. Light from the chandeliers reached into the far corners of the church and mingled with the glow of candles twinkling in wrought-iron stands. Inhaling the scent of balsam fir from the many holiday decorations, Margery gazed down the long center aisle, where she would soon walk with her father. Margery stepped back into the vestibule, her pure-white gown rustling softly as she moved. She was, at least, happy her parents had allowed her the choice of her wedding dress, if not the groom. Margery and her mother had searched in several shops, nearly deciding to have the dress custom made when they came upon this elegant, sleek gown. The moment Margery laid eyes on it, she knew it was the one. The high neckline draped in soft folds beneath her chin, flattering her face. The form-fitting bodice hugged her curves, yet avoided the dreaded hourglass silhouette, with its yards of smooth satin skirt billowing around her. Margery’s unadorned veil revealed topaz eyes and soft lips, but covered her rich auburn hair and cascaded down her back. This was the gown of a modern, independent woman. If only her life matched the dress. His conversation with the bishop finished, Anthony Belleville joined his daughter. “Are you ready, my dear?” The organ began Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March,” and a rumble echoed throughout the nave as the guests stood and turned toward the back of the cathedral. Trembling, Margery took her father’s arm. He must have felt her shaking because her father leaned over and, to Margery’s astonishment, whispered, “I know he’s not your first choice. But you will be well cared for and you know Gil adores you. I don’t know which man has captured your heart, but you won’t lack for anything with Gilbert Racine. The publishing empire he’s going to inherit will provide a comfortable, even pampered, life. He’s the best choice to keep you in the style your mother and I have provided. I can’t bear the thought that you would ever lack for anything, my dearest daughter.” Margery was further shocked when her father wiped a tear from his eye. It was at that moment when Margery Belleville, soon to be Margery Racine, accepted her fate. She would be a good wife for her successful businessman husband. She would provide him with children and a well-run home. She’d bury her feelings deep inside, lock them away in a cupboard, and throw away the key. She could not marry the man she loved. But she might grow to love the man she married. Margery forced a smile and reached up to give her father a kiss on the cheek. “I’ll be alright, Papa. Gil will be a good husband.” She patted his hand. Straightening her spine, Margery gave a sharp nod of her head. “I’m ready.” *** Excerpt from RSVP to Murder by Carol Pouliot. Copyright 2023 by Carol Pouliot.
