The Lady and the Earl

Amazon | Goodreads

A woman’s gaslighting behavior is a prescription for disaster.
But for whom?

Lady Harriet Manning is a skilled physician. She spends her days assisting her father, a renowned physician, and volunteering with the Ladies Auxiliary. Despite her passion for medicine and helping those in need, Harriet is bound by societal expectations that prevent her
from practicing medicine openly. Meanwhile, her mother is constantly pressuring her to find a suitable husband.

During a trip back to London, Lord Asheton, the Earl of Lockford, has a riding accident and is brought to Harriet’s clinic for treatment. The two grow close during his recovery, and their relationship begins to blossom. However, when Harriet’s family discovers that Asheton is the son of the Duke of Whippany, they are shocked. Harriet’s mother encourages her to put her medical abilities aside and conform to society’s expectations in order to fit in with Gavin’s world.

Despite their engagement, the ton is not happy with the match. Daphne Willis, in particular, has other plans in mind. Will Harriet and Asheton be able to overcome the obstacles in their path and find true love?

“Where were you going in such a hurry?”

Lockford noticed Turner kept an eye on him.

“I’m on my way to London. It was foolhardy, but I wanted to run full out.” He snorted a chuckle. “I imagined I was leading in the steeplechase, and I’ll have you know, I had every intention of winning.”

“Until your mount threw you. He must have had other ideas about winning.” Turner shook his head and chortled.

Houses began to appear on either side of the road. They were coming into Sommer-by-the-Sea.

Turner pulled the wagon up to the side of a small building.

“We’re in time.” He nodded toward the lamp lit in the window. “The doctor is in.”

Turner hopped off the wagon, and with his help, Lockford hobbled into the clinic.

The pain was beginning to gather once again. He was lightheaded, and his stomach churned. Standing was too far from the ground. He needed to lie down.

“Mr. Turner?”

Lockford, still holding on to Turner, turned toward the door across the room and stared at the person in front of him. His tight expression relaxed into a warm smile.

She gave him one look. “Jasper,” she called without moving her eyes from the injured man at her door. She stared at him, and his heart pounded.

“Lady Harriet, he’s been in a riding accident.” Mr. Turner struggled as Lockford fought to stand on his own.

“My lady.” Lockford gave her a slight nod. “May I be so bold as to introduce myself? I am Mr. Asheton Dunn.”

He stared into her lovely eyes, silently congratulating himself for remembering to use his pseudonym, and proceeded to collapse onto the floor.

This Will Hurt II

by Cara Dee

(June 2nd 2023)
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, LGBTQ+, Romance

Part II of II Angst Awakening Friends to Lovers Family

Buckle in. Roe and Jake have mountains to climb, walls to tear down, and countless private moments to bring them even closer in this final part of their journey.

The ground beneath me had finally settled. I was content. I was all right. I could move forward and live with my choices.

Then I found Jake’s damn journal from… therapy. That was right. My best friend, who defined “man of few words,” was in therapy. The ground started shaking again. I got desperate. I got angry. I…almost lost him on the job when he saved my life.

Nothing was settled anymore.

Enjoy this peek inside:

What the fuck did you wear to a country concert?

I grabbed a pair of jeans and boxer briefs from the closet, then walked back into the bedroom and picked up my phone from my nightstand. I sent Jake a message.

I’m fresh out of chaps and cowboy hats. What should I wear, hoss?

While I waited for his response, I removed the towel around my hips and put on the boxers and jeans.

“Dada, I’m-wa no baff!”

I glanced over at the door as my boy ran in, with Sandra hot on his tail.

I grinned faintly and swooped him up. “Look out, we got a runner ova’ hea’.” I peppered his face with smooches, and he giggled up a storm. “You can’t escape bath time, baby boy. But you know what comes after, don’t you? Mommy’s gonna read you a story.”

“Nooo,” he complained.

“Yeees,” I mimicked.

Sandra sighed and smiled ruefully. “Let’s go, sweetie. We’ll get extra bubbles and everything.”

“Hear that? We love those bubbles.” I handed over the clinging monkey to her and pressed a kiss to the side of his head.

“I don’t wannaaa,” he whined.

Sandra carried him out, only to stop in the doorway and turn back to me. “You sure you don’t wanna cancel?”

Positive—and I wasn’t fighting with her about it again.

“I won’t be late,” was all I said.

The teasing glint in her eyes faded, and she walked out.

I released a breath.

My phone dinged on the nightstand, and I walked over and read Jake’s text.

I’ll tell you you’re pretty no matter what you wear, sugar.

I laughed silently and shook my head.

Helpful.

Whatever. I returned to the closet and dug out a long-sleeved tee that made my biceps look good. We were going to an outdoor place up in Griffith Park, so it was bound to get chilly. But I liked that it wasn’t a huge concert. Only some five thousand people. It beat going to the Staples Center.

Jake picked me up downstairs fifteen minutes later, and the most country thing about him continued to be his truck. It made no sense to drive a truck in LA. But he loved it, and I really had no room to argue choices of vehicles. I was still a laughingstock after buying a sports car before Casper was born. Worst deal ever. I’d probably lost twenty grand when I’d traded it in for a family-friendly SUV.

“Hey, pretty.” Jake pulled out from the curb. “I see you found clothes.”

“No thanks to you.” I smiled and buckled my seat belt. “Will I see a lot of chaps tonight?”

“If I drop you off in West Hollywood instead, I’m sure there’s a club for you.”

I laughed. Funny.

“Oh, this is a good one.” He cranked up the volume on the stereo. “He’ll probably play this tonight.”

I side-eyed him, more interested in studying Jake than hearing a song. There was something inherently sexy about how he drove. He made life look easy when he was on the road. One arm along the edge of the window, the sleeves of his open flannel shirt rolled up—some serious forearm porn going on—two fingers gripping the wheel loosely at the bottom. He tapped his foot to the rocky beat, and his lips moved subtly to the singer’s voice.

Ratty USMC ball cap on the dash. Since he always wore it backward, he took it off when a headrest was in the way.

Fitting lyrics, about holding on to things you believed in.

Of course, it being a country rock song, the topic was the singer’s truck.

“It’s the miles that make a man.”

How many miles till I fell out of love with him?

“I’d be nothing without you, so I’m holding on.”

Surprisingly, a line not about the truck.

“I’m not the openin’ act,” he chuckled. “Quit starin’.”

That was the fucking problem, wasn’t it? He was the headliner.

.

Author Cara Dee

I’m often awkwardly silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there’s so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex.

There’s a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly.

Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve.

I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

I’m a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, cooking, baking, and geeking. There’s time for hockey and family, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

.

Tannin made a disgusted noise as she picked a fat, oozing slug off her shoe. She was
so over camping and the creepy crawlies that seemed to appear out of nowhere
and get into everything.

.

Tannin rubbed her eyes. She’d slept like shit again and could feel a bad mood hovering
over her like a storm cloud. Inside the tent behind her, Ava snored in her
sleep. She’d snored most of the morning, even when Tannin kicked her.

.

There were…complicated feelings where Ava was concerned that she’d rather not deal
with, and it was only made worse by the fact they had to sleep next to each
other. The tents they slept in were nothing fancy. Just a sheet of
water-proofed canvas, wooden pegs and thin cords that somehow held it all
together. She’d tried every negotiating tactic she knew to try and get out of
sharing a tent with the princess, but with Adair and Flint sharing one and Dana
solidly refusing to give up hers, there was little choice. Ava knew that Tannin
needed her, and it made her insufferable. Worse than that – she kept trying to
talk. Like really talk. About what happened in Armodan. Tannin did not want to
talk about it, and she refused to accept Ava’s apologies.

.

Maybe if they did talk it out, it would be better than this horrible stalemate they
were in, but Tannin was bitter about the whole thing, and Ava lording it over
her while she was at her weakest wasn’t doing anything to improve her attitude.

.

“What’re you scowling at?” Flint asked as he emerged, tousle-haired, from his tent. His
long limbs unfolded as he yawned and stretched out his cramped muscles. It must
be a tight fit in the boys’ tent, Tannin thought. Flint was long and lanky, and
Adair was even taller, and quite frankly, built like a house.

.

Tannin was about to reply when she was interrupted by a shriek from inside her tent.
Ava came barrelling out, wild-eyed and holding a slug at arm’s length.

.

“Did you put a slug on me while I was sleeping?!” she demanded, brandishing the slug
at Tannin.

.

“No,” Tannin replied innocently.

.

Ava glared and scoured her face for any trace of a lie. When she didn’t find one,
she threw the poor slug aside and stomped off in the direction of the river to
wash the slime from her clothes.

.

Tannin chuckled and poked at the fire she was trying to get going. Flint leaned
forward, chin on his hand, and gave her a hard look. She glanced at him slyly
out of the corner of her eye.

.

“Tannin,” he said sternly.

.

“Yes?” She gave him her most angelic face.

.

“How many slugs?”

.

She grinned evilly just as another shriek came from the river.

.

“TANNIN!”

.

MY REVIEW

When an author can deliver an important message in a children’s book and still make it an exciting adventure, they’ve done their job well.

We are introduced to Sophie, a young girl who’s loved and has all the things a girl could want. Growing up this way, she doesn’t understand that this is a privilege, not a given for many others. Her eyes are opened when her parents take her on a trip to India. The village is impoverished and many kids have no parents and must scrounge out a living any way they can. They don’t dwell on the harsh life they’re living. They find beauty and magic in their surroundings. Sophie learns much from these kids and takes some of that joy and magic back home.

Each page is beautifully illustrated, with so much detail. I took my time perusing, not wanting to miss anything.

I thought a lot about this story after I finished it. Many of us take our lives for granted, not seeing the bigger picture. My eyes are now more open.

The Charterhouse Of Evil

by Janice Tremayne

Genre: Supernatural / Suspense / Horror

Synopsis

Bound to life old and new, the sins of the departed still haunt her. When wickedness infects the innocent, can she see the curse undone?

Western Australia. Clarisse Garcia is ready to return stronger than ever. With her husband by her side, the plucky spirit hunter is back on familiar territory with an assignment for Benedictine monks. And now she’s out to vanquish whatever evil is plaguing the monastic village that caused orphans to mysteriously die.

With what could be a voracious demon on her hands, Clarisse partners up with a man who grew up in the local orphanage to investigate suspicious activities. And as they dig through the monastery’s shrouded history, she discovers that some of these servants of God might not be as benign as they claim… and she may be their next quarry.

Can this driven woman end the impiety before more lives are sent to the grave?

The Charterhouse of Evil is the shocking fifth book in the Haunting Clarisse supernatural horror series. If you like bold characters, adrenaline-spiking investigations, and jaw-dropping twists and turns, then you’ll love Janice Tremayne’s malevolent tale.

Enjoy this peek inside:

Detective Ramsey flung the door open, the doorknob etching into the paster wall. He didn’t care about this room of horrors.

It was still a crime scene with broken police tape on the floor after all these years. No one had entered this room since they had found the monk’s body sprawled on the floor in a fetal position, his hands reaching for the sky as though announcing himself to his creator in his dying moments. But the detective thought it was a naïve end, as the priest had been charged with the murder of a boy in 1970. He was a criminal. A paradox to think a murderer could enter the kingdom of heaven.

“The white marking on the floor is where the priest was found dead,” Detective Ramsey said.

Clarisse tentatively stepped into the room. She felt something morbid.

“Death lives here,” she said.

“What do you mean?” the detective asked.

“Whoever died here never left. His soul remains, I mean.”

“His spirit occupies the room?” The detective raised his eyebrows.

“The monk died a shallow death, questioned his faith, and held his hands up to the Lord to save him.” She paused, held her palms in front of her, and closed her eyes. “But it was too late. He had already traded his soul with the demon and knew it.”

“A desperate attempt to avoid the confines of hell?”

Clarisse nodded. “In our hour of death, the truth always comes out, Detective. All the things we lust for in the immortal world become insignificant. Because it’s in our last minutes, as we cling to life, that we realize we have a soul.”

The detective placed his hands in his pocket. “I don’t know what to make of that, Clarisse. You’re saying we learn about the afterlife in our hour of death?”

“Yes, even nonbelievers come to terms with that.”

“And that is more frightening than death itself? To think that there is life after death?”

“And then Detective, it is too late to reverse the course of your life.”

EDWARD REEP  Edward Reep, a California resident and water color artist, became a photographer and combat artist for the United States Army during WWII. Widely publicized in newspapers and magazines, Reep’s poignant war-time depictions made him popular with the public before and after the war. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to help finance his pursuit of art due to his outstanding contributions to war art.

JAPANESE SUBMARINES  In 1942, the Japanese navy dispatched submarines to the USA along the western coastline from Oregon to the Aleutians. Along with several other incidents, they successfully shelled a lighthouse near Vancouver Island, WA, and torpedoed and shelled a freighter off Cape Flattery, WA. The freighter was towed to safety with no loss of life. Though a factual event, the date and location was altered somewhat in our story for purposes of involving Agnes and fictionalizing the event.

ZOO EUTHANAZIA   Throughout the story, Mrs. Odboddy goes to extreme lengths to find a permanent home for Shere Khan, a displaced carnival tiger. During WWII. many USA zoos closed due to personnel shortages but mostly due to the lack of adequate food supply needed to sustain the large carnivore animals. Poor nutrition led to the death of many large animals and many more were euthanized due to the inability to properly feed them. In no circumstance would an existing zoo take on a displaced carnival tiger. Shere Khan’s plight in this novel, is therefore, based in fact. Never fear, Mrs. Odboddy’s determination is mighty!

THE GOOD SHEPHERD PAINTING   Bernhard Plockhorst is most famous for the painting of The Good Shepherd shown with a staff in one hand and a lamb in the other. He also painted the famous picture of the guardian angel watching over two children as they traversed along a dangerous cliff. His image of the face of Christ is the most accepted rendering of Christ’s likeness in the Christian Church. Plockhorst was from Germany, famous during the latter part of the 1800. Copies of his paintings are in practically every Christian church and many USA homes.

AMPHETAMINES  Though home front USA citizens knew little about amphetamines during the 1940’s, Hitler widely distributed Benzedrine and Pervitin to Germany’s battlefield soldiers to enhance stamina, endurance, and performance. Likely many of the atrocities of war were committed due to the effects of enhanced drug use. Wide effects from amphetamines vary, but well could include the symptoms Agnes suffered from their use.

Snake Charmers and Donkey Carts

Marrakech

THE HAWKERS’ CRIES FILLED THE SQUARE, the guttural sounds of Arabic throbbing in Manuela’s ears. All around her, men yelled out in that strange language. Men were everywhere. They brushed past her in the marketplace crowds, and she shrank back. Unfamiliar smells filled the air.

She clung to Adriano’s hand as they walked through the Jemaa el-Fna square, willing herself not to cry. A cobra reared up his ugly head, its black tongue flickering, only a few feet from where she stood. She bit her tongue to keep herself from screaming. The snake swayed from side to side as the snake charmer played music on his pipe. A fat man in dirty robes approached her with another snake, trying to wrap it around her neck.

She stumbled backward, afraid she might faint, but thankfully Adriano was pulling her away, toward the dark, labyrinthine streets of the souk. Here she would do battle with the scooters and the donkey carts, but at least there were no snake charmers poised to place a slimy, wriggling serpent around her neck in exchange for coins.

Manuela breathed in deeply. It was all too much. The blood coursed through her veins at double-speed. Her heart pounded in fear and revulsion. She leaned in closer to Adriano, his comforting solidity managing to calm her and provide her with the courage she lacked in this odd city.

Min fadlak,” said a robed man, indicating his wares.

Manuela instinctively shrunk from his attentions, but Adriano stepped closer, examining the delicate lamps shining in the dark marketplace. Their intricate patterns cast colorful, elaborate illuminations through inky night sky. Even she could recognize its mystic beauty.

Kam else’er?” said Adriano.

The two men began haggling over the price, and Manuela stood silently, a spectator to the show. Life was a spectacle here, but one she took no pleasure in observing.

Three days into her holiday in Marrakech, Manuela felt only anxious and confused. The streets were too narrow. She had to remain vigilant not to step in the droppings left behind after the donkey carts passed. There were too many people pressed too closely together. People stood so close when they spoke to you. Adriano told her it was rude to step back, but she couldn’t help herself. The yells in Arabic sounded harsh and threatening to her ears. The sights and sounds, the colors and smells were too exotic.

Manuela could only relax when they returned to their riad in the evening, though even there she could not completely escape the lingering sense of foreignness. The wooden keyhole doors were too small, and she kept bumping her head on their frame. The sweet smell of spices filled the apartment with a cloying scent she was unable to banish, even after opening the windows for long periods of time in the hopes of airing the room.

She would step into the shower and rinse the city’s dirt and grime from her body, before enveloping her skin in a soft robe. When Adriano pushed her gently down to the bed, a sense of familiarity would calm her, and she could temporarily forget all about the stresses of this chaotic city.

Yet each morning she felt drained and exhausted once again, unable to face another day, desperate to return home, where things were safe and familiar. She longed to hear Italian spoken in the squares, to enter a restaurant and know that familiar foods were on the menu, to be capable of conversing with the shopkeepers.

To belong.

But what could she do? Adriano seemed to thrive in this new environment. He craved exotic places. Where had he learned to count in Arabic? He and the hawker were aggressively shouting figures back and forth, and she saw the spark of excitement in Adriano’s eyes. For her, this city was hell on earth. For him, an exotic tale out of Arabian Nights.

She breathed in deeply once again, attempting to quell the panic attack she could feel working its way through her body. The hawkers came closer with their oils and their soaps and their leather slippers. She closed her eyes and suppressed the desire to scream.

Back home, her days were spent cutting through the red tape of property purchases in Tivoli and placating demanding clients. Her hard-earned vacation was supposed to relax her, not cause greater stress.

She’d begged Adriano to go back to the Sardinian resort they’d visited this past spring, with its well-designed bungalows, soft, white sand beaches, perfectly ordered rows of umbrellas and beach chairs, and crystalline waters beckoning just before them.

Just smelling the salt air caused a sense of well-being to wash over her body. She’d thought Adriano would book the tickets for the resort, as they discussed. It was charged to her account, after all. Instead, he stopped off at her house with two tickets to Marrakech.

“You’re going to love it,” he said, kissing her on the neck. “It will be an adventure. I swear, you’ll never want to come back to Italy.”

She sighed. Not wanting to return to Italy wasn’t the problem. It was Morocco where she never wished to set foot again.
