   THE INTERNET – RESEARCHING THE LIZARD’S TALE

Let’s imagine that it is 1964 instead of 2014 (when I actually sat down to write The Lizard’s Tale). My book is an international mystery novel and the first section deals with Guatemala: the life of the people in the jungles; the poverty; the conditions on the highways and mountain roads; and the cartel violence. How would I research this in 1964? I could spend time and money actually travelling in Guatemala, although I doubt if I would actually be able to see the things I needed to see without risking my life savings as well as my life. I could head to the Los Angeles Public Library and spend months poring through books and pictures, although I don’t speak Spanish. I could try to find natives of Guatemala living in LA who would be willing to take the time to talk to me. All of this would be incredibly time consuming, and in all likelihood, not achievable.

Of course, a good imagination always helps a fiction writer, but there is a limit to imagining places you have never visited. How could I ever conceive the small town of Estanzuela in eastern Guatemala where one of my characters arranges his transaction with the cartel? How could I describe the huge Kafes Guatemala coffee plantation where this same character plans to cross over the border into Mexico? How could I envision the ancient Mayan ruins he comes upon in the jungle?

Because I began The Lizard’s Tale in 2014, I was able use the Internet and have never had to do the grinding, slow kind of research required in previous eras. Sometimes I have to marvel at the effect the Internet has had on writing a novel. Just think, at your fingertips, in a few seconds you can research any fact or see any place in the world. People post everything about anything on the Internet. I was able to tap into journals of adventurers slogging through the Guatemalan jungles, families driving VW buses over the treacherous dirt roads in the Chuchumatanes Mountains, and read firsthand stories about the drug violence.

In my first novel, One Foot in the Black, my main character got off a bus at the Greyhound Station in Chicago. At the time, I thought I had a problem. How did that station look? What was it like inside? I had no idea, but incredibly, someone had posted pictures of the exterior and interior of that shabby, crummy place on the Internet. I was able to take a quick look, get what visual information I needed in a matter of minutes, and move on. That was when I realized how much easier all my future research would be.

Readers have commented on how real the Guatemalan (and Mexican) locales are in The Lizard’s Tale.  Several people have asked if I actually visited those places before writing the book.  I just smile and say, “Sure, I was there.” I hope you enjoy reading The Lizard’s Tale. Guatemala is just the first stop.

Synopsis

Kurt Kamm has written a novel that’s a literary crime novel, with a strong thread of non-fiction running through it. The Lizard’s Tale is a tale of crime—with an a wide-ranging cast of characters.

When the DEA goes up against the Sinaloa Cartel, an orphan and an endangered lizard are caught in the conflict. The action moves from Guatemala to Mexico to Catalina Island off the coast of California.

Alejandro, a middle class Guatemalan, wants his share, and makes a deal with the cartel. Now he’s risking his life to deliver the goods.

El Dedo, a brilliant financier, is the Sinaloa Cartel’s banker. He worries about what to do with the billions of dollars collecting dust in his underground vault.

Ryan, a DEA Special Agent, needs to make a high profile case to get a promotion. Is the big yacht headed for California carrying a Mexican drug shipment?

Kate, a wildlife officer on Catalina Island, smells smoke. When she heads out in the middle of the night to investigate a fire, she makes an astonishing discovery.

Jorge, an orphan from the streets of Mexico, is abandoned in the United States. Will he find his way back home and track down his mother’s killer?

~~~~~
Excerpt
Dedo was one of the few outsiders at the top of the cartel hierarchy. He came from a different background than most of the drug lords, who had grown up in poor towns in the Sierra Madres where people suffered a hard existence living in hovels made of cinderblocks. Dedo had no poverty to escape. He grew up in Mexico City and lived a blessed childhood. His father owned a small Mexican chemical business that grew large when it began to supply the Cartels with the ingredients used to make methamphetamine. His mother was Swiss, and had worked for a chemical company in Basle when she met his father. Dedo inherited his intellect and business sense from his father. His grey eyes came from his mother.
When his father brought him to the State of Sinaloa for the first time, Dedo stood in the dust and blasting heat and felt the moisture evaporating from his skin. “Those mountain highlands,” his father had told him, pointing off into the distance, “are ideal for growing poppies. All they need is sunlight and moisture.” Then he turned and pointed in the direction of the Pacific Ocean, and continued, “And out in those valleys between the mountains and the coast, the climate is perfect for growing marijuana.” Finally, his father looked at Dedo and told him, “Fortunately for us, sunshine and water don’t produce methamphetamine. For that, they need chemicals—a lot of chemicals—and that’s why we’re here.”
Cardboard boxes, worn from years of wear, and large plastic storage bins packed with decorations littered every surface of Samantha Sweeney’s sitting room as she sat against the wall next to an electrical outlet testing strands of white lights one by one. Sam had a standing appointment with her son, Jamie, for the Saturday after Thanksgiving to string the lights up on the outside of the house. She’d taken the day off from her family’s seafood business with this purpose in mind, but he had disappeared right after lunch. And, after hauling the boxes and bins down from the attic, she lacked the energy to do it herself.
 The back door in the kitchen creaked open. Seconds later Eli entered the room, stopping short when he saw her sitting on the floor in tattered jeans, a USC sweatshirt, and a baseball cap pulled low, hiding much of her face. “Don’t take this the wrong way. I think you look hot in your work clothes. But I hope you’re not planning to wear them out to dinner.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. Of course I’m not wearing this out to dinner.” She glanced at the clock on the mantel. “It’s only five thirty. I thought you weren’t coming until six. And why are you so dressed up?”
Dressed up for Eli meant his khaki pants were pressed and he wore the nicer of the three flannel shirts he owned—the plaid one from the men’s store on Main Street that she’d given him for his birthday.
“Since when is it wrong for a man to want to look nice for his girl?” Holding out his hand to her, he pulled her to her feet. “We have a reservation. They’ll hold it for us, but you’d better put it in gear.”
“What reservation? I thought we were going to the Pelican’s Roost for dinner?”
“Change of plans. I’m taking you somewhere special tonight. Go!” He smacked her on the rear. “Put on something pretty.”
“Please tell me I don’t have to wear a dress,” she said, walking backward as she exited the room.
He let out a bark of laughter. “Since when do you own a dress?”
“Funny, ha-ha. I actually own two.”
(Sweeney Sisters #1)
by Ashley Farley
Women’s Fiction, Romance
Paperback & ebook, 380 pages
June 24th 2015
Set in the South Carolina Lowcountry and packed with Southern charm and memorable characters, HER SISTER’S SHOES portrays three sisters—Samantha, Jackie, and Faith—who struggle to balance the demands of career and family while remaining true to themselves.
Samantha Sweeney has always been the glue that holds her family together, their go-to girl for love and support. When an ATV accident leaves her teenage son in a wheelchair, she loses her carefully constructed self-control.
In the after-gloom of her dreaded fiftieth birthday and the discovery of her husband’s infidelity, Jackie realizes she must reconnect with her former self to find the happiness she needs to move forward.
Faith lacks the courage to stand up to her abusive husband. She turns to her sisters for help, placing all their lives at risk.
In the midst of their individual challenges, the Sweeney sisters must cope with their mother’s mental decline. Is Lovie in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, or is her odd behavior normal for a woman her age? No one, including Lovie, understands her obsession with a rusty key she wears around her neck.
For fans of Elin Hildebrand, HER SISTER’S SHOES is a contemporary women’s novel that explores and proves the healing power of family.
Lowcountry Stranger (Sweeney Sisters #2)Lowcountry Stranger
(Sweeney Sisters #2)
by Ashley Farley
Women’s Fiction, Romance
Paperback & ebook, 284 pages
July 1st 2016
Family Drama, Southern Style.
There’s a stranger in town. And it’s no coincidence when she shows up uninvited at a Sweeney family wedding. All eyes are drawn to this urchin who seems to have washed in with the tide. Before the night is over, the doe-eyed waif charms young and old with her street smarts and spunky personality. For better or worse, Annie Dawn is here to stay.
The memorable Sweeney sisters from Her Sister’s Shoes have returned with more suspense and family drama to hold you spellbound until the dramatic conclusion. As she approaches the next stage of her life as an empty nester, Jackie is torn between expanding her fledgling design business and spending these last precious months with her boys before they fly the coop. Her own worst enemy, Sam is terrified of making a commitment to Eli Marshall, handsome police officer, true love of her life. Her resolve is tested when a ghost from her past shows up after nearly two decades. Faith nurtures her seven-year-old daughter who is recovering from the trauma of her abusive father. Is the threat in the past, or is there more danger on the horizon? The sisters seek guidance from their mother, Lovie, a true Southern matriarch who shows them how to respond to adversity with grace and dignity.
Things are heating up in the Lowcountry. The Sweeney sisters remind us, once again, that being a part of a family is about more than sharing the same DNA.
Enjoy this glimpse inside.
I pushed on the heavy wood door hanging awkwardly on its hinges, creaking back and forth as if drawn in and out by some great beast inside the cottage. Like the first time I’d been there, it was dark and dingy inside, lit only by a few candles and the glowing embers of a dying fire in the hearth.
Trophy heads still covered the walls: trolls, ogres, werewolves, and more Creach all killed by the witch over her many decades avenging the death of her son, Talib. The low, flickering light of the candles cast bizarre shadows about the room, making the heads seem somehow alive. But the witch had plucked the eyes out from each mount and tied the eyelids shut with thick string, ensuring they were dead. I touched my fingers to my own eyes, imagining my head on the wall. I swallowed hard but found my throat completely dry.
“Bella of the Woods,” I called. “You and I had an agreement. I am here to honor it. I expect you will do the same.”
A scratching sound came from the right side of the chimney where the stonework came out several feet from the wall, creating a corner of dark shadow. It took me a few seconds to realize the sound was actually a low, rasping laugh.
“Honor?” the voice said. “How dare you speak that word in my house? What honor has a hunter? What honor has a Creach?”
I slowly pulled my sword from my side. Against her magic, I didn’t suppose it would do much good, but it sure made me feel a lot better to have the cold steel in my hand.
“You call me both a hunter and Creach, so you know what I am,” I said, addressing the black shadow where the witch’s voice seemed to come from. “But you made the bargain with me nonetheless.”
“You come with the Jerusalem Stone from the Demon Lord himself?” the witch asked.
“I do.”
“Show me.”
I reached into my front pocket and pulled out the smooth stone, so plain that it could have been any stone on the edge of a road or under the flowing waters of a mountain stream. Yet so many had fought and died over the centuries to possess the five of them. My own ancestor, Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, had been the last monster hunter to hold all five – and he had been burned at the stake as a heretic by those who wanted the Stones to themselves.
“Where’s the other?” the witch said.
“You have it,” I replied.
“No, you said you would return here with two stones.” A shadow moved from the black hole next to the chimney, somehow darker than what was around her. The witch’s voice rose higher, laced with bitter anger. “One from the Lord of the Demons and the other from the Lord of the Vampires. You promised to bring two.”
“I didn’t have –”
“YOU PROMISED!” she shouted, the inside of the cottage whipping up in a whirlwind all around me. Debris flew through the air. Dust shook from the collapsed part of the roof, and the walls creaked as if bending to the will of a great storm. The wind kicked up flames from the embers in the fireplace. The log roared to life, casting light on the witch now standing in front of me.
Gone was the young, beautiful woman who had faced me only two weeks earlier. Her hair, which had been so long that it dragged on the floor, was gone. Cuts and scabs crossed her scalp as if a knife had roughly scraped off her hair. Her face looked pinched, lips pressed together tight, cheeks caved in as if she was in pain. Eyes that had burned into me before now stared at me dully, lifeless and covered with phlegm.
“What happened to you?” I asked, the words out of my mouth before I could stop them.
Some chit chat.
Well, what a week! I’m so glad it’s over. Now that the election results are in, perhaps social media and television will return to normal. But, enough about that.
I had a quiet week and it was wonderful. I caught up on some new episodes of my TV shows, watched some good movies, and did a bunch of reading.
I also got a lot done in blogging ahead. The holidays are fast approaching and I’m usually not on line as often as I’m busy with family and friends.
I’m looking for some non traditional recipes to cook this year for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas? Anybody got some suggestions for me? I’m up for anything that doesn’t cost too much or require some exotic ingredients.
I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday Posts so be sure to leave me your link.
It doesn’t take a crystal ball to see that something’s not right on Bay Island…
Since she left her psychiatric practice in New York City to open up a psychic shop in her hometown on Bay Island, Cass Donovan has given her fair share of readings to conflicted customers. But what she sees in Ellie Callahan’s future doesn’t bode well.
When Ellie’s mother, Marge, publicly confronts Cass about the reading, the embarrassment makes her want to curl up and die. And when she later stumbles across Marge’s body—and is a suspect in her murder—Cass is suddenly the star of Bay Island’s rumor mill.
Cass is determined to prove her innocence and save Ellie from meeting the fate in her unfortunate vision. But even with the help of her friends Bee and Stephanie, Cass will have to channel some serious sleuthing instincts to find the real killer…
Excerpt
Cass sucked in a breath, the gasp audible in the silence of the small room. Oh no . . . The walls pressed in on her, loomed over her, threatened to suffocate her. This can’t be happening again.
“Is everything all right?”
“Umm . . . sure.” Darkness encroached, tunneling her vision. She forced it back, counted to ten, took deep breaths—anything to fight back the blackness. She struggled against the urge to push the glass ball away from her. “Sorry. I must have zoned out for a minute.” She averted her gaze, hoping the other woman wouldn’t catch the lie.
The woman’s eyebrows drew together, a frown creasing her forehead.
“Are you sure you didn’t see anything bad?” Cass forced a laugh as she shoved her chair back, stood, and moved away from the table. “Of course not. I told you
I would only allow good spirits to enter.” Liar.
My Review
Okay, this felt very familiar. I couldn’t help but feel the resemblance to a certain vampire series. Though this is about werewolves, the plot seemed similar. I’m sure that’s hard to avoid with the explosion of fantasy books. This worried me as I was truly wanting to enjoy the series.
Turns out I did. Those similarities quickly vanish as the author builds her world and weaves intrigue and danger into her character’s lives.
Ashling’s ability to shift into a wolf at birth is viewed as a curse by her father. She’s sent away to live a secluded life until time to receive her mark. When that time comes, her father has other plans for her. Plans she can’t abide.
Shunned by her father, pursued by her enemies, Ashling must leave her family and winds up in Maine, trying to blend in with the humans and hide among them.
There were some things about this story I really liked. The idea that werewolves are humanities protectors. The inner workings of their royal court. And there were some intense action scenes.
What didn’t work for me was the insta-love. I’ve never been a fan of character’s falling deeply in love without really knowing each other. That and love triangles irk me. Needless to say, Ashling and Grey barely know much more than each others names and profess undying love. This bothered me. I’m sure many enjoy this in a story, just not my cuppa tea.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t the main characters, Ashling and Grey, that I connected to. It was a couple of secondary character’s. They aroused my curiosity. I hope the next books in this series reveal some of their stories.
The beginning of the story intrigued me. The middle was more about romance and slowed things down somewhat for me. Then, the last third of the story took off and I couldn’t stop reading.
Overall, a fun read, and I have a good feeling about the rest of the series.
Sixteen-year-old werewolf princess Ashling Boru is different from other wolves–she was able to shift to a wolf at birth. Rather than bringing pride to her family, it brings fear, and she is sent to live in Ireland’s secluded countryside. Ashling’s reputation is further blackened when she refuses her betrothed, defying the ancient laws. When her pack’s oldest rivals begin to hunt her, she finds herself in the small town of York Harbor, Maine, far from everything she’s known.
When she crosses paths with dark and rebellious Grey Donavan, something ignites within her soul. There’s just one problem: Grey is human. Their instant connection turns into a passionate romance, and Ashling begins to believe she can create her own life outside of wolf laws. When she uncovers long-buried pack secrets that threaten to destroy all she holds dear, Ashling’s courage and tenacity are tested. Will she choose her deep and enduring love for Grey or will she follow Old Mother’s path to her destiny?
The wolf laws are rigid and barbaric, and Ashling’s illicit love for Grey, if discovered, will mean his death. But when Ashling and Grey get trapped in the blood-soaked depths of the Bloodrealms, they find ancient horrors far greater than Ashling’s father’s rule.
Tainted Cure
The Rememdium Series #1
Tainted Cure (The Rememdium Series Book 1) by [Fontainne, Ashley]
My Review
So, the greatest minds come together and actually come up with a cure for drug addiction. Great, right?
Wrong. The drug cartels see their fiefdom going up in smoke. And many others see their cash cows disappearing.
Conspiracy and back stabbing lead to desperate measures. The outcome are monsters risen from the grave, craving human flesh.
I’ve read other books by Ashley in different genres, and being a fan of zombies and apocalyptic stories, I just knew she’d give me something twisted and uniquely her own. I got it in spades.  Her character’s are varied, from professionals to the lowest of the low, with average Joe caught in the middle of a living hell on Earth.
The direction the author takes with this story is actually believable, even with the zombies. The question,” Should you do it just because you can?,” rears it’s ugly head and the answer is a deadly and resounding Yes. Figures. No one really cares about the consequences, just the bottom line.
This isn’t your average zombie horror story.
Loved it and on to the next book!
Author Ashley Fontainne
Award-winning and International bestselling author Ashley Fontainne is an avid reader of mostly the classics. Ashley became a fan of the written word in her youth, starting with the Nancy Drew mystery series. Stories that immerse the reader deep into the human psyche and the monsters that lurk within us are her favorite reads.
Her muse for penning the Eviscerating the Snake series was The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. Ashley’s love for this book is what sparked her desire to write her debut novel, Accountable to None, the first book in the trilogy. With a modern setting to the tale, Ashley delves into just what lengths a person is willing to go when they seek personal justice for heinous acts perpetrated upon them. The second novel in the series, Zero Balance. focuses on the cost and reciprocal cycle that obtaining revenge has on the seeker. For once the cycle starts, where does it end? How far will the tendrils of revenge expand? Adjusting Journal Entries answered that question: far and wide.
Her short thriller entitled Number Seventy-Five, touches upon the sometimes dangerous world of online dating. Number Seventy-Five took home the BRONZE medal in fiction/suspense at the 2013 Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards contest and is currently in production for a feature film.
Her paranormal thriller entitled The Lie, won the GOLD medal in the 2013 Illumination Book Awards for fiction/suspense and is also in production for a feature film entitled Foreseen.
Ashley’s decided to delve into the paranormal with a Southern Gothic horror/suspense novel, Growl, which released in January of 2015. The suspenseful mystery Empty Shell, released in September of 2014. Ashley will be teaming up with Lillian Hansen (Ashley calls her mom!) to pen a three-part murder mystery/suspense series entitled The Magnolia Series. The first book, Blood Ties, released the Summer of 2015.
Whispered Pain released in October of 2015 and Night Court released December 13, 2015.
Synopsis
Maybe it’s the mistletoe—or maybe there’s something magical in the air this Christmas. USA Today bestselling author Janice Maynard delivers the perfect gift with these two romantic, heartwarming stories…
Hot Arctic Nights
In North Pole, Alaska, Christmas spirit is everywhere—except in Hallie Prentiss’s heart. At least her two-week stint managing the Dancing Elves B&B will pay the bills. Workaholic Hallie is tempted to take a walk on the naughty side for once. But when she does, will she ever want to leave?
By Firelight
There’s nothing like nearly freezing to death on the Appalachian Trail to make a woman want to live a little. And when Madison Tierney stumbles upon Grant Monroe’s mountain cabin during a blizzard, she’s gripped by something more than gratitude. Soon, the glow of firelight sparks hot, sweet kisses…and the start of a Christmas adventure she’ll never forget.
Excerpt
The Irish setter dozing on the rag rug in front of the hearth lifted her head and whined. Grant looked up from his book. The dog sniffed the door.
He stood and followed her. “What is it, girl?” Automatically he checked for the rifle standing to the left of the doorframe, just out of sight of any intruders. He enjoyed his self-imposed isolation, but he wasn’t immune to its dangers.
The dog barked, a sharp, quick sound filled with knowledge denied to the inferior hearing of humans. Grant felt the hair rise on the back of his neck as his pulse picked up. What was out there? A bear? A bobcat? Either was a possibility.
Something hit the door, and the dog went wild, scratching and pawing at the sturdy oak. Grant hesitated for a split second, and then a sound, almost surely human, made the decision for him. He unlocked the door and jerked it open, jumping back in surprise when a bundle of snow-covered cloth tumbled in and literally landed on his feet.
The next few minutes were chaotic. The dog jumped and barked at the lump on the floor while Grant struggled to close the door against the force of the wind.
When he finally managed that and quieted the frantic dog, the resulting silence resonated with unanswered questions. He knelt cautiously and put a hand on what he now could see was a person’s shoulder. Gently, he turned him/her over.
He sucked in a shocked breath.
