Horror and science fiction are a blend of genres I’m drawn to time and time again. Throw in a frozen environment and a group of people who are cut off from help and have to make their own way and it’s like icing on the cake. And discovering aliens is the sprinkles on top.
I was quickly drawn into the story. Formed a bond with one of the characters right away and soon met some others I liked. There was one that I had my doubts about. He did some stupid, selfish things when things started going wrong. But he eventually kind of won me over.
A group of people arrive in Antarctica to investigate an anomaly discovered by NASA. They find a huge rift in the ice and decide to risk going down to see what’s there. A storm blows in and they’re forced to wait it out under the ice so they decide to do some further exploring. What they find is unbelievable. An alien ship. Knowing that the rift is growing and that the ship will soon be lost, they enter. Nothing can prepare them for what’s inside.
As I mentioned before, I was quickly pulled into the story. And once the group entered the ship it was break neck speed to the finish. There’s something, or some things alive. Not sweet little creatures from outer space. These are big, strong, fast and very, very hungry. As they run from one bad situation to another, they are forced deeper and deeper into the ship. It’s a race against time to find a way out before the ship slips into the sea.
Some seriously edge of your seat encounters happened throughout the book. From scary, to a bit gory, to bewildering. I was completely invested in discovering the fate of these characters.
And the ending was out of this world. I had to read it again. And think about it. And I came to the conclusion that it was nuts, but great too. I had to laugh. Talk about not seeing it coming.
Humans have always looked to the stars for signs of Extraterrestrials.
They have been looking in the wrong place.
They are already here, entombed in a spaceship beneath Antarctic ice for thousands of years.
The ice is melting and they will soon be free.
A huge rift in the ice is discovered in Antarctica that stretches for 18 miles, (29 km) and 820 feet (250 meters) apart at its widest point.
When environmental scientists enter the ice rift to check out an anomaly on NASA’s satellite scans of the area, they discover something far more life threatening than the raging blizzard trapping them in the rift. They are unarmed and unprepared for their ensuing fight for survival.
Note – Though Ice Rift – Salvage, is a continuation of the story from Ice Rift,
it was brought about by readers feedback saying they would like to read a
follow up on the book. Ice Rift can be read as a complete story. There is no
cliffhanger or abrupt ending.
ICE RIFT – SIBERIA is the 3rd book in the best selling Ice Rift series. Ice Rift and Ice Rift – Salvage need to be read first to gain maximum enjoyment from this novel.
Having stowed aboard the Russian vehicle transporting the alien weaponry
salvaged from the doomed Antarctic spaceship, the surviving fragment of EV1L
arrives at a secret underground complex in the remote wilderness of the Siberian tundra.
It will hide.
It will feed and grow.
It will breed.
When all is ready, EV1L and her hoard of vicious offspring will emerge from the facility and head for the nearest city to start their conquest of Earth.
When the Americans intercept a plea for help from the secret facility and learn of the alien menace, a crack team is rushed to Siberia. Their mission is to destroy the alien creatures before they escape.
If they fail, it could bring about the end of human civilization.

Those Who Came Before
by J.H. Moncrieff
Genre: Horror
My Review
A weekend camping trip goes horribly wrong for two young couples. Reese Wallace is the lone survivor of the massacre that befell them, which makes him the likely suspect.
Detective Maria Geyeyes is assigned the case and comes to realize she’ll have to set aside her belief in what is real and what is imagined and draw on her Native American heritage to solve it and stay alive.
The story started with the massacre and that quickly pulled me into the story. As the author wove past history with present day, she tightened the grip on my intrigue. And the more I learned about the characters, the more I was invested in their survival.
This is a mystery and a horror story, but also one of what goes around comes around. The past can come back to haunt you.
And the ending. Well, that gave me much to ponder.
~~~~~
Synopsis
People are dying at Strong Lake, and the worst is yet to come.
An idyllic weekend camping trip is cut short when Reese Wallace’s friends are brutally murdered. As the group’s only survivor, Reese is the prime suspect, and his story doesn’t make much sense. A disembodied voice warning him to leave the campground the night before? A strange, blackened tree that gave him an electric shock when he cut it down for firewood?
Detective Greyeyes isn’t having any of it―until she hears the voice herself and finds an arrowhead at the crime scene―an arrowhead she can’t get rid of. Troubling visions of a doomed Native American tribe who once called the campground home, and rumors of cursed land and a mythical beast plague the strangest murder case she’s ever been a part of.
Midnight In The Graveyard
Edited by Kenneth W.Cain
Genre: Horror / Anthology
My Review
I enjoy collections like these. I get the chance to read some authors I’ve enjoyed before and discover some new ones. After finishing these, I’ve found a few new authors to add to my list.
I’m thrilled to be able to say that I enjoyed all of these. That’s saying a lot, as I’m kind of hard to please after reading horror for so many years. And I won’t be sharing my favorites. That would be hard to do. So many of these stayed with me after I read them.
All of these felt complete. And they all made me feel a wide range of emotions. From sad to horrified and anxious to shocked. It was a no-brainer to give the collection my highest recommendation.
~~~~~
Synopsis
Midnight. Some call it the witching hour. Others call it the devil’s hour. Here in the graveyard, midnight is a very special time. It is a time when ghostly spirits are at their strongest, when the veil between our world and theirs is at its thinnest. Legend has it, that while most of the world is asleep, the lack of prayers allow the spirits to communicate under the cover of darkness, among the headstones, their whispers rustling in the leaves of the old oak trees. But if you’re here in the graveyard, you can tell yourself it’s just the wind, that the moonlight is playing tricks on your eyes, that it’s only the swirling mist you see. But when you hear the graveyard gate clang shut, the dead have something to say. Here are their stories…

Scavenger Hunt
by Michaelbrent Collings
Genre: Horror
My Review
I’m assuming you read the synopsis. Found it familiar. Was maybe thinking, been there, read that. A mysterious figure somehow kidnaps a groups of strangers. They wake up in a room with no idea where they are or what happened. Then the man behind the smiley mask tells them they must play a game. They play, or die. They follow the rules, or die. And they have to stay together. Let the scavenger hunt begin.
One of the things that made this plot stand out was the character’s stories. Why they were chosen. You can then decide if you care whether they live or die.
Another thing that stands out is the challenges the character’s face. Collings puts them through the wringer. It’s one race after another to complete ever more difficult tasks.
Scavenger Hunt is another thrilling, race to the finish read from this author. I’ve enjoyed many of his books and this one was crazy fun.
~~~~~
Synopsis
“I already know all your names. As for me… you can call me Mr. Do-Good.”
***
All they have to do to survive is…
The Fearing: Fire And Rain
The Fearing #1
by John F.D. Taff
Genre: Horror / Apocalyptic
My Review
End of the world stories are a favorite of mine, Throw in something supernatural and I’m even happier.
I’m also attracted to character driven stories and the author has a special talent here. His characters came to life in just a few words. I could easily “see” them.
As the end begins for three different groups of people I was struck by how the events made me think someone had taken the Earth and shook it like one of those snow globes. Each event was different and catastrophic.
And with all good horror, there needs to be a bad guy. I’m not sure what his plan is, but if this beginning is anything to go by, it’s going to be very bad. He reeks of some seriously bad vibes.
Fire And Rain is the first book in Taff”s The Fearing serial and I was quickly hooked. I already have the next two books and I anticipate it getting crazier and more out of this world the further in I go.
~~~~~
Synopsis
John F.D. Taff’s highly-anticipated epic supernatural thriller, The Fearing, begins with Book One: Fire & Rain where humanity faces a series of catastrophes spawned by a worldwide event that unleashes all of mankind’s greatest fears.
In the American high desert, vacationers returning from a road trip are thrust into a heart-stopping flight from death as they try to avoid a cataclysmic end. In rural Missouri, the lives of a group of high school students are destroyed after their small town is devastated and they’re forced to confront the end of everything they’ve ever known.
And on the eastern seaboard, there’s someone else. An enigmatic man who thrives on despair and embraces all fear. A man with his own dark and sinister goals. Someone who wants to ensure humanity goes out with the biggest bang possible.
Proudly presented by Grey Matter Press, the multiple Bram Stoker Award-nominated independent publisher. Grey Matter Press: Where Dark Thoughts Thrive.

Something Deadly
by Rachel Lee
Genre: Horror / Supernatural
My Review
I was trying to figure out what it was about this book that made me love it so much.
Was it the setting? The story takes place on a secluded island. Islands are small and have secrets. Everyone knows each other’s business. And if something goes wrong, there’s nowhere to run.
Was it the characters? Being an animal lover, I couldn’t help but like Markie. She’s the new vet hired for the exclusive island. And the medical examiner, Declan, has an open mind. And I thought he was the perfect fit for Markie. And then there’s Kato, Markie’s wolf/husky companion. He and Markie have this almost spiritual connection. They seem to actually communicate with each other.
Or was it the plot? Something was preying on the inhabitants of the beautiful island. The attacks appeared random, leaving the victims hollowed out husks. The condition of the bodies defied explanation and there was no telling who would be next.
I think it was all of three of these and something more. The writing. Rachel Lee had me hooked right from the beginning. The characters could have stepped off the pages, they felt so genuine. I could visualize the island. And it was chilling to “see” the attacks.
Everything worked for me. I read this book several times, returning to it when I wanted to relax with a favorite story in between new books. This is one of those books that isn’t part of a series, but I sure wish it was.
~~~~~
Synopsis
An island of beauty becomes A GATEWAY TO TERROR…
Few could argue that the exclusive island of San Martin is anything less than paradise. In this wealthy enclave, veterinarian Markie Cross has a thriving practice, but her almost psychic connection to animals has made human relationships — especially with men — harder to navigate. Until mystery, murder and something unfathomable shatter her world…
People are dying strange, unexplained deaths. Island medical examiner Declan Quinn is stunned at the unearthly condition of the bodies, and he and Markie share a dark suspicion that something terrifying and impossible is at work here. Something that may not be human.
As a sinister message becomes clearer, Markie and Dec race to understand the tragic history of this island paradise and unlock the true nature of the evil now descending. Because if they can’t, Markie may become the next victim…
Bigfoot War
by Eric S. Brown
Genre: Horror
My Review
Jeff, along with his younger brother and his father, set off into the woods to track down whatever tore apart one of their cows. Jeff was the only survivor of the encounter with a creature straight out of myth. Fifteen years later, he returns to Babble Creek to exact his revenge. He didn’t know the isolated little town would pay the price when he succeeds.
I’ve had a fascination with Bigfoot for many years. Read a bunch of books. Watched a bunch of movies. Some funny, some not so funny. I especially like the not so funny ones. and Bigfoot War is definitely not so funny.
When Jeff killed the bigfoot that destroyed his family, it turns out the big fella was part of a tribe and they, in turn, came calling for their own revenge. It was like Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em robots as they laid waste to the town and it’s inhabitants. Body parts were strewn about and the blood ran through the streets as the creatures picked them off one by one.
Eric reminds me another cyptid horror writer that I really enjoy in that he doesn’t hesitate to kill off his characters. I learned early on not to get attached to any of them as the body count is huge. Even knowing this, I couldn’t help but pull for the people of Babble Creek. The odds weren’t good but they banded together to somehow survive until help came.
This book was super fast paced and the action was pretty much nonstop. When I reached for a sip of my iced tea, I discovered the ice cubes had long ago melted and the beverage was warm.
If you like your sasquatch with sharp claws, tremendous strength, big teeth and a bad attitude, Bigfoot Wars would be a great read for ya. It was for me.
~~~~~
Synopsis
Jeff Taylor was an ordinary boy growing up in the small town of Babble Creek, North Carolina, until one night his life was changed forever when a sasquatch brutally murdered his family. Taylor fled the town, hoping to leave the painful memory behind. Years later, after two tours of duty in the Iraq War, he’s back in Babble Creek seeking vengeance. Taylor’s lust for the blood of the monster that slew his family sets in motion a series of events that soon has the entire town fighting for its life as a tribe of sasquatches descend from the forests and hills into Babble Creek to declare war upon its citizens. Babble Creek is about to find out Bigfoot is very real and there’s more than one of the creatures that want to fill the streets with blood.

The Haunted
by Michaelbrent Collings
Genre: Horror
My Review
I’ve read several of this author’s books and he has a way of getting under my skin and giving me a good scare. This was a book I grabbed several years back. Read and enjoyed. And somehow neglected to review. It’s time to do that now.
Whether it’s the house or the people in it, I’m always up for a good haunting. And this starts haunting you right from the beginning. Don’t think it’s just another abandoned house story. I kept visualizing what was happening and this one chilled me to the bone.
There’s The Before. What Sarah refers to as the mysterious event that occurred before they moved into the new house and tried to start anew. I was so curious and the author kept the reveal just out of reach. A great hook to keep my curiosity peaked.
Then there’s the settling in to their new home. The strange, frightening occurrences begin immediately. And they just keep getting worse. Sarah and Cap are between a rock and a hard place. They can’t afford to move and they won’t be driven from their home. Even if they wanted to leave, the house won’t let them.
There you have it. A terrifying haunting. A family that can’t escape it. And then, the big reveal. The Before. I didn’t see that coming at all. And the ending. Whoa. Didn’t see that coming either.
Collings delivers with The Haunted. Just like Sarah and Cap, I couldn’t escape this book until I read the last word.
~~~~~
Synopsis
They have the beginnings of a perfect family. A husband, a wife, a baby on the way.
But something will stop them from being happy as they move into their new house: the power of the undead that roam the halls of their home.
The demons that have come to claim them. The darkness that seeks to destroy them.
The haunted.
