My Review

Feast your eyes on the thrilling cover art. I love stories about unstoppable creatures and insurmountable odds. A fellow book lover liked this one so how could I resist it.

I read this about eight months ago and I somehow missed sharing a review. It shows how much fun I had reading it that I still recall things so well. Divers from the Royal Navy come under attack by a swarm of eel like creatures during a diving test. An investigation reveals the creatures were genetically modified to become a new food source and escaped during a storm. Now they are loose, looking for food and they like the taste of human flesh.

The action and suspense starts right out of the gate. The creatures are growing in size, appetite and intelligence. And they’re expanding their hunting grounds to dry land. With deadly creature stories, I’m all about the attacks. I want a lot of them. And this book is chock full of some really harrowing ones.  As the creatures expand their hunting grounds, the US joins with the Royal Navy. It was wild to see how closely the creatures coordinated attacks resembled those of the military trying to combat them. And some of the battles were super gory as both sides tried to destroy the other.

I was able to check off all of the boxes for what I want in a creature horror book with Red Swarm. Awesome sea monsters, courageous and genuine characters and edge of your seat suspense and action. I’ve already grabbed the next book, Black Spawn, and anticipate another thrilling read.

My Review

The Nightmare Room. What a great title. And the cover. Chilling, isn’t it? I grabbed this one and settled in for some spooky reading.

It didn’t disappoint. Creepy noises. Shadows seen out of the corner of the eye. An old farm house with a mysterious past. And then the true terror begins for a family trying to recover from a tragedy and start anew. These were all checked off on my spooky list.

I had a good time with this haunting. It had some really eerie atmosphere. And as things got darker, there were times I was looking over my shoulder, startled at a noise behind me. And the author brought to life these characters. Made me feel for them and fear for them. This was a good start to The Messy Man series and I’ll be reading more.

My Review

I remember the first time I came across this book and thought how deliciously creepy the cover was. Of course, I had to see what it was all about. Lucky enough to have won a copy, I wish I could remember who from so I could thank them for a copy of this very creepy book.

I’m all for a tough female protagonist and Micheline fills those shoes so well. And I’d never come across a tetrachromat before. She can see the auras of ghost. As a descendant of Van Helsing, she was born to hunt monsters and ghosts. Her special camera is one of most valuable tools. When a hunt goes terribly wrong, her team is cursed by a soulchain. Breaking the rules, they go off on their own to break the curse before they’re all consumed by it. They have seven days to complete their mission. Good thing they work together like a well oiled machine.

Right from the opening scene I was captured by this story. It had a very eerie vibe and some great characters. I couldn’t help but pull for them as they sought a cure from the curse. There was some edge of your seat action, some deadly creatures and nasty ghosts, and some fun dialogue to break up the suspense.

There’s a bit of romance but it wasn’t the main focus. It just sprinkled a little something nice into what is tagged a horror story. And while the book didn’t necessarily scare me, that takes a lot as I’ve read and watched horror since I was a wee girl, my imagination created some vivid visuals that made for an exciting, eerie experience.

Synopsis

Micheline Helsing is a tetrachromat—a girl who sees the auras of the undead in a prismatic spectrum. As one of the last descendants of the Van Helsing lineage, she has trained since childhood to destroy monsters both corporeal and spiritual: the corporeal undead go down by the bullet, the spiritual undead by the lens. With an analog SLR camera as her best weapon, Micheline exorcises ghosts by capturing their spiritual energy on film. She’s aided by her crew: Oliver, a techno-whiz and the boy who developed her camera’s technology; Jude, who can predict death; and Ryder, the boy Micheline has known and loved forever.

When a routine ghost hunt goes awry, Micheline and the boys are infected with a curse known as a soulchain.

As the ghostly chains spread through their bodies, Micheline learns that if she doesn’t exorcise her entity in seven days or less, she and her friends will die. Now pursued as a renegade agent by her monster-hunting father, Leonard Helsing, she must track and destroy an entity more powerful than anything she’s faced before . . . or die trying.

Lock, stock, and lens, she’s in for one hell of a week.

 The 12 Terrors Of Christmas

by Claudette Melanson

36383570. sy475

Genre:  Horror / Short Story Collection

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I’m not going to go into what this book is about. The detailed blurb tells you that.

I loved the cover. It was one of the reasons I grabbed the book. Santa doesn’t look so jolly, does he? LOL

And the title. It’s perfect for the stories inside.

The stories. Well. They sure aren’t comfy Christmas stories to read by the fire. They’re better suited for some creepy campfire tales. Santa sure isn’t the one I recall from my childhood. The elves aren’t the cute ones from the animated shows I recall. And the reindeer would probably eat Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer.

I was telling my son about each of these stories and we had fun trying to come up with a new version of the song The Twelve Days Of Christmas.

These were so much fun. So creepy. Some, so dark. Filled with ghouls, werewolves, vampires and more. The author sure got creative with them. And each story was just as good as the other. If you like horror and want something different for your holiday list, check these out.

Synopsis

Award-winning author Claudette Melanson offers eleven new and original stories to make your skin crawl at any time of the year. This horror anthology also includes an original short by Amazon International Best-Selling Author, Lynn Lamb, titled Bring Me Flesh and Bring Me Wine. A special bonus story is also included by Melanson, Mislead, previously published only on the Halloweenpalooza blog. Grab a cup of cocoa and make sure the windows and doors are locked tight as you settle in by the fire to enjoy these tales of terror, but be warned…locks have never been succeeded at keeping Santa from gaining entry. If you enjoy a slice of horror with your holiday cheer, this collection of Christmas horror shorts will satisfy all your dark cravings during the holidays…and beyond.

Terror One: Who is Santa really? Does something sinister lurk beneath the red suit and apple-cheeked visage? More importantly, what does Santa want for Christmas?
Terror Two: It is said that every wish bears a cost…even a wish of good intent. What do Detective Talbot and his son, Mallory, stand to lose when the pair seek to right a wrong on Christmas Eve?
Terror Three: Christmas can be a time for great joy…but also for heart-wrenching regret. Can the magic of Christmas Eve turn back the clock before time runs out for Morana and her family?
Terror Four: Snow falls white and clean, seeming to purify the small town of Moon, Pennsylvania, but the woods behind Vaughn’s home have taken on a sinister cast. The snow keeps falling in record-breaking depths, but does evil lay hidden beneath its seemingly-innocent luster?
Terror Five: As his elves scurry to fill the toy orders for the busy season, unknown terror creeps toward the workshop intent on releasing an evil meant to cancel Santa’s yearly deliveries forever.
Terror Six: A well-meaning elf casts a spell which could inadvertently reveal the dark truth about Santa’s workshop and its inhabitants. The world’s children may end up paying a terrifying price, proving that the path of good intention oftentimes does indeed lead to hell.
Terror Seven: A scary twist on a classic Christmas poem
Terror Eight: Santa’s sleigh plummets to the ground, tearing all hope of a merry Christmas to bits and pieces. Will the elves be able to employ enough magic to stitch together some sort of solution? Or will their efforts only deliver greater horror and loss?
Terror Nine: Trinette is preparing to celebrate her first Christmas in love. Her boyfriend says he found the perfect gift for her but beneath the shiny red paper and ribbon lies a secret he’s kept hidden during all the months of their courtship…
Terror Ten: The world’s population explosion means business is booming at Santa’s workshop, with the need to expand making a difficult excavation below the permafrost necessary. But the elves should use caution lest they dig up an evil best left buried.
Terror Eleven: A special holiday treat for Maura DeLuca fans! Riptide ended on a happy note, but how did Maura’s extended family celebrate Christmas? Could it be that the holiday didn’t quite play out the way the vampires planned?
Terror Twelve: It’s a dangerous time to call oneself a non-believer. Those who scoff at Santa’s existence are melting all over the world. But could the benevolent head elf turn out to be the murderer?

Vampires, ghosts, demons, elves, werewolves, serial killers and a rampaging Krampus are just a few of the monsters creeping amongst the pages of The 12 Terrors of Christmas. Are you brave enough to venture inside to experience the flip side of the typical Hallmark-themed Christmas?

 Rolling In The Deep

Rolling In The Deep #0.5

by Mira Grant

25317373

Genre:  Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I’ve read several stories where I knew how it ended before it began. It really worked with this book.

Imagine Network thought it would be a real money maker to launch an expedition to the Marianna Trench to prove the myth about mermaids was true. When the Atargatis was later found adrift, it’s decks splattered with blood and all people on board gone, they used some found footage to discover what happened on the fateful voyage.

That wicked cover promised some evil mermaids. I sure got those. They might not have made their appearance til well into the story, but everything I read before that was just as entertaining. Mira fleshed out her characters just enough for me to connect with them and her scientific approach to what the creatures were was fascinating and surprising. And when she finally brought those mermaids to the surface, it was a very unpleasant meeting.

It’s been said that the bottom of the ocean is the last unexplored place on our planet. Who knows what dwells in the deep. I think that’s part of why I enjoyed this book as much as I did. The idea of mermaids as a myth or genuine. Who knows. Friend or foe. Who knows. And what if they are real? What happens then?

I watched the movie Jaws when it first came out. Many years later I moved to a coastal town. The first time I stepped in the ocean, I spotted a wave curling towards shore and all I could think was is there a shark in there. I never truly felt comfortable swimming in the sea because of that movie. Now I have something else to make me hesitate to enter the water. I wouldn’t want to have a close encounter with Mira’s mermaids.

Rolling In The Deep is a novella sized story with a super sized bite. I had a blast reading it and immediately went on line and grabbed the follow up book, Into The Drowning Deep.

If you love evil mermaids, this is one you should dive into. It was all kinds of creepy fun for me.

Synopsis

When the Imagine Network commissioned a documentary on mermaids, to be filmed from the cruise ship Atargatis, they expected what they had always received before: an assortment of eyewitness reports that proved nothing, some footage that proved even less, and the kind of ratings that only came from peddling imaginary creatures to the masses.

They didn’t expect actual mermaids.  They certainly didn’t expect those mermaids to have teeth.

This is the story of the Atargatis, lost at sea with all hands.  Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy.  Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the bathypelagic zone in the Mariana Trench…and the depths are very good at keeping secrets

Strange Blood: 71 Essays on Offbeat and Underrated Vampire Movies by Vanessa Morgan (ebook)

This is an overview of the most offbeat and underrated vampire movies spanning nine decades and 23 countries.

Strange Blood encompasses well-known hits as well as obscurities that differ from your standard fang fare by turning genre conventions on their head. Here, vampires come in the form of cars, pets, aliens, mechanical objects, gorillas, or floating heads. And when they do look like a demonic monster or an aristocratic Count or Countess, they break the mold in terms of imagery, style, or setting. Leading horror writers, filmmakers, actors, distributors, academics, and programmers present their favorite vampire films through in-depth essays, providing background information, analysis, and trivia regarding the various films. Some of these stories are hilarious, some are terrifying, some are touching, and some are just plain weird. Not all of these movies line up with the critical consensus, yet they have one thing in common: they are unlike anything you’ve ever seen in the world of vampires. Just when you thought that the children of the night had become a tired trope, it turns out they have quite a diverse inventory after all.

Everywhere you looked, there would be women dressed in black – white faces, black hair, mouths painted scarlet. It was The Look. You saw it on the street. You saw it on the covers of magazines. You saw it presenting arts programs on TV.

And some of us saw it in our nightmares…

Anne Billson’s debut novel, described by Christopher Fowler in Time Out as ‘dark, sharp, chic and very funny’, is set at the end of the ‘greed is good’ era, and features a gothic love triangle between a man, a woman and the 300-year-old vampire they chopped into pieces a decade earlier.

But now she’s back, and this time she’s building a bloodsucking empire…

Blood Bar by Daph Nobody (ebook – French edition)

In a close future, blood has become a valuable beverage. A “new world” guru named Borderman has built up a business on this fluid flowing in every man’s veins. During a long drought, as water is missing everywhere, blood becomes the core of a “golden rush”. People kill for a single drop of water or blood. After being raped by a bunch of men who introduced themselves as water sellers, Alna loses her mind and eventually commits suicide. Years later, her husband Jooze, old enough to feel death getting closer, wants to take revenge as a final shot before dying: he will find back those men and kill them all! On his way, he will meet a little girl who was genetically conceived by the government to be exclusively fed with blood. A magic encounter, so to speak! He will use her as his ultimate weapon. But a dark man called Bob Wayne is chasing them both, whose mind is driven by cruel desires and insane projects…

Peripheral Visions: The Complete Ghost Stories 1988-2015 by Robert Hood (ebook)

Peripheral Visions is a unique reference collection that includes all of Robert Hood’s 44 ghost stories to date, three of them especially written for this volume. These memorable tales display Hood’s uncanny ability to make the fantastic real, to embrace weirdness and create human characters whose lives – both inner and outer – haunted by mortality, are laid bare and revealed to be our own worst nightmares. Ranging from melancholy reflection on life and death, through disquieting tales of dark humor and vengeance, to chilling visions of ghostly apocalypse. Hood’s stories are sure to draw you into a terrifying world that in the end is revealed to be irrefutably our own. Though many of these stories draw on the traditions of the past, they are far from traditional in approach.

As you turn each page remember this: not everything here is as it seems. There’s always something more, barely glimpsed, out there on the periphery.

Each section has an evocative, disturbing illustration by noted artist, Nick Stathopoulos.

 The Farm

by Amy Cross

Genre:  Horror

My Review

You get two for one in this book.

It begins in 1979 when Sara and her sister come across a dead body in the river. Waiting for her sister to return with help, Sara meets a mysterious man who claims to be Death. Not long after, bad things visit the family.

Flash forward thirty years. Paula and her father move into the old abandoned farm he bought at a bargain price because of it’s tragic history. She’s excited to learn it’s rumored to be haunted and she hopes to encounter ghosts. She should have been careful what she wished for.

I’ve read many of Amy’s books and she always manages to give me the chills. She did it again with The Farm. I like reading scary books at night. You get such vibes when it’s dark out and all is still. I managed to creepy myself out as the story got darker, the two separate stories came together and the horror come out to play.

I felt a strong connection to many of the characters and that made reading about some of the horrific things that happened to them hard to swallow. I wanted to go back and change the past and to warn Paula and her father about what was really haunting the old farm.

Be prepared. This is a true horror haunting.

Synopsis

One farm. Two tragedies, thirty years apart. And a tortured figure whose presence connects both incidents… In 1979, the Bondalen family farm in Norway is home to three young girls. As winter fades to spring, Elizabeth, Kari and Sara each come to face the secrets of the barn, and they each emerge with their own injuries. But someone else is lurking nearby, a man who claims to be Death incarnate, and for these three girls the spring of 1979 is set to end in tragedy. Today, the farm has finally been sold to a new family. Dragged from London by her widowed father, Paula Ridley hates the idea of rural life. Soon, however, she starts to realize that her new home retains hints of its horrific past, while the darkness of the barn still awaits anyone who dares venture inside. Set over the course of several decades, The Farm is a horror novel about people who live with no idea of the terror in their midst, and about a girl who finally has to confront a creature that has been feeding on the farm’s inhabitants for generations…

 In One Fell Swoop

by Willow Rose

Genre:  Horror / Thriller

My Review

I was curious about this after taking a close look at the cover. Having read many of Willow’s books, I spotted those vines and my imagination took flight. The author sets the tone right from the beginning. Camping in the Green Swamps of Florida. Creepy woods. Campers disappear. Oh yeah, this was gonna be fun.

They say you don’t fool with Mother Nature and they’re right. She bites back. But so does Patty. Her grandson is one of the missing campers and she enters the woods, bound and determined to find him.

So much happens in this book. I want to tell you about this scene. And that scene. And how wildly imaginative the author got with the ways Mother Nature took her revenge. Crazy stuff. And great for a movie.

Beware. The woods are dark and deep. Scary things creep.

Synopsis

Fasten your sea tbelts as Willow Rose takes you on one scary, wildly imaginative ride. For anyone who loves a good thriller, this is a treat.

On a hot day in June, two groups of campers disappear in the Green Swamps of Florida. The wood is still burning in the bonfire, all their belongings are abandoned, and there is blood at the campground. But not a single body is found.

Patty McGee, the grandmother to one of the missing campers, sets out to find out what happened to her grandson, thinking his father might have kidnapped him. However, soon she realizes she is up against a force way more powerful than that. It’s a battle even she can’t win.

From the Queen of Scream comes a scary, yet humorous tale of man’s battle against nature. In One Fell Swoop is a compelling and clever story, as only Willow Rose can deliver.

It’s a fast and exciting read filled with demons, ghosts, and
