 The Tent

by Kealan Patrick Burke

.

Genre: horror / Novella

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

While browsing my Kindle for something creepy to read I came across this book. What? A Kealan Patrick Burke book that has been hiding from me. I’m sure you know what happened next. I immediately started reading it.

We begin with an old man and his dog on a porch. The quiet is shattered by the dog’s piercing barks. It won’t shut up so the man enters the woods to see what’s what. There, he finds a tent, and the story truly begins.

Being told from two perspectives, that of the man and that of a family of campers, worked great for me. I wanted to know what would happen to the man and his dog, and I couldn’t wait to see what happened to the not so happy couple and their boy.

There’s a reason scary stories are told around campfires. One, to scare you. Two, to warn you not to go camping. And Kealan gives us an all new monster to worry about.

I loved this spooky tale. Would have loved it as a longer book too. The attention to detail, character development and atmosphere of doom was just right. No easy thing with fewer words. The author did it so well.

Grab your insect repellent and join us around the campfire. Just ignore the rustling sounds from the woods. I’m sure you parked your tent in the permitted area.

 Poet Anderson …Of Nightmares

by Tom DeLonge

.

Genre: Horror / Sci Fi

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

Alan and Jonas are brothers, orphans. They have only each other. They’re also Lucid Dreamers, able to move in dream worlds. When an accident lands Alan in a coma, Jonas must enter the dream world to find his brother and wake him up.

He’ll have to face a monstrous creature, his very own Night Terror, and REM, an evil being bent on entering the real world.

I enjoyed the names of some of the beings. Night Terrors and REM (rapid eye movement) are both sleep conditions and great choices. Caused some “I see” moments for me.

Jonas starts out fumbling in the dream world but catches on quick. Thrown into dangerous situations, he adapts. Save his brother, the girl he loves, the dream walkers, and the world, a heavy burden rests on his young shoulders.

At first glance the cover looks creepy. Take another look. See all of those images. I give five stars on the cover alone. So creative.

Action galore. It never slows down. Between the dream world and the waking one, you are pulled along at a face pace.

It feels a bit sci-fi, a bit horror, a bit action and adventure, and all thrilling. I can honestly say this story is something totally new for me. Not even sure how to tag it.

poet anderson and biloxi trip two 037

I have the hard cover edition and it is awesome. The cover art leaps out at you and the book comes with a music CD. I listened to it while reading and it really lent atmosphere and excitement.

A great collaboration brings you an amazing reading experience.

 Petit Mort

by Nikki Noir And S.C. Mendes

.

.

Genre: Horror / Splatterpunk / Short Stories

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

I love reading. And I’m always ready to try something new. Splatterpunk, why not? And I’m big on short stories and collections. It’s like sampling wine. Some are to your taste, some not. I sipped on all of these and….. whew, there were some doozies. There’s a bit of the erotic, the tough to swallow, and some fun to lighten things up a bit. But, just a bit.

Some stood out more than others, especially Santa’s Package. Want your horror somewhat different and extreme. Give this collection a try.

 The Visitor

by Kevin Bachar

.

Genre: Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

Just a woman and her dog in an isolated cabin. A major snowstorm is howling outside. And someone or something is outside.

Man, this stuff is my jam. I love isolated settings. There’s no one to help you. It tests Sally’s and her dog, MoBo’s, nerves when things get strange. And a blizzard just adds to the suspense. And Sally’s boyfriend is making the trek. It’s too late to turn him back around. Will he be help or will he be walking into something deadly?

Who is The Visitor? That’s for me to know and you to find out. And Kevin won’t disappoint you. The story takes place in one night and there’s never a dull moment.  Loved it!

5 STARS

~~~~~
Synopsis
Sally and her dog, Maureen Bojangles, MoBo for short, make the slog from Brooklyn to the family cabin upstate. It’s a 2-hour drive from the city, but it might as well be another planet. Twenty-four pharmacies and bass-thumping clubs, are replaced by tiny hamlets and shoddy cell phone service. But the remoteness is what Sally needs to write her memoir and reconnect with the painful memories of her abusive father.
A major blizzard has made the journey to the cabin an adventure in itself, and on their trek to her writer’s hideaway, Sally and MoBo notice strange tracks in the snow and mysterious sounds echoing in the surrounding forest. Sally wants to tell her boyfriend not to come up because of the treacherous conditions, but he’s already on his way.
Then The Visitor arrives, and Sally, her boyfriend, and MoBo are in for a night of terror and a battle for survival. Will they be able to withstand the horrors unleashed by The Visitor?
Inverted Reality by Fran Lewis Banner
INVERTED REALITY
by Fran Lewis
July 21-25, 2025 Book Blast
Synopsis:
Inverted Reality is a compilation of five books that teach people, through the characters involved, the consequences of doing harmful, dangerous or mean things to others. The person will face in some cases the “mirror” that will replay their wrongdoing and then ask if they will repent. If not, the mirror will decide their fate for them. Each story has different characters who have done something wrong or evil to someone else. Some of the stories have voices that have been silenced and can no longer be heard. One story describes someone who was wrongly accused. The last part “The Third Choice” is Fran’s favorite. It tells a story about people who do not repent, and fate or consequences will be inflicted, but she won’t tell you how. Some of the stories are fiction while others are true and factual. You, the reader, will decide whether the story is true or false as you enter the world of Inverted Reality. You can decide what your own definition of the title means, and how you would react if you had to face the mirror or the third choice for what you might have done. You decide if it really happened and how you would react.
It’s good vs. evil, and consciousness vs. unconscionable.
.
Praise for Inverted Reality:
Life isn’t fair. Why don’t I have a real dad like President King? He couldn’t ever imagine the president raising a fist or a belt to his daughter.
“Anyways, if things work out swell, you’ll soon be visiting the Big Apple or any one of our marvellous states. We’ve got fifty-four states since we split Texas and California into two. America is now the greatest, and you, lucky boy, are now speaking with the ruler of the entire damn world—”
“China is the new ruler since—”
“Fuck China!” The president snarled. “I’m the most important guy in Terra Firma. Hell! Even aliens from Mars speak with me, and I ain’t kidding you.”
POTUS’ eyes widened into saucers. “No way! Your Excellency, you’ve actually seen real aliens, like in the films, Liberation Night and Independence Day and Women in Green and Men in Black. Real mothership aliens?”
President King preened, chest all puffed out, a grim smile on his face. “Yep. This is top secret, right? I’m not supposed to tell that we got aliens running wild amongst us, but take it from me, there are loads of them and—”
“Are there any aliens that are famous?” POTUS cut in, his heart thudding with excitement—Oh my God! Just wait till I tell Frankie. Mega wicked!
“Sure. Listen, promise you won’t tell, right? Swear on your life, and I’ll give you a coupla names.”
“I swear on my life,” POTUS crossed his heart feverishly. His love affair with sci-fi was only second to his boxing reruns on archive hologram channel.
“Okay. You know the actor guy, Tom Cruise? Yep! He’s one of the Martians.”
“No way! Tom Cruise?” POTUS’ ears were literally burning—Tom Cruise is an alien! Oh my God!
“Yep! Ever ask yourself how come he does all his own stunts despite his age? I mean, the guy’s older than me in human years, right? Last time I checked, he was almost seventy years old, and he’s still scaling walls and jumping parachutes and driving cars over cliffs. Hell! It’s even rumoured the guy never bleeds, never sleeps, and never been sick either. Now, who wouldn’t want that kinda power, right? A real charmer and superman, literally,” the president shook his head, his eyes glittering with admiration. POTUS could tell he liked alien Tom Cruise a lot.
“Are there women aliens too, Your Excellency?”
“Sure thing. The singer broad, Taylor Swift. Yep. Little green girl, I’m afraid. Psycho-bitch is a cloner and can split herself into thirteen alien Taylors, ensuring she has enough of herself to wreak chaos on humanity whenever she wants. Why do you think she always wears those creepy number 13 earrings? The alien bitch claims she was born on the 13th of the month and turned 13 years on a Friday the 13th, but we know who her real parents are and trust me, they ain’t humans; alien mummy and daddy, just like their spawn. As I said, that psycho bird is the mistress of chaos. She can sow anarchy, cause riots, and destruction just by showing her friggin’ face and opening her big mouth to spout garbage. And boom! Instantly, humanity turns into crazy zombies; wild, rabid squad dogs who just want to cancel out everyone without having a friggin’ idea why they’re doing it. And she has thirteen clones to help her sew unrest around the world. Most times you see her having a concert in different countries, it’s actually one of her thirteen alien clones performing. But as I said, this is top secret, got it? Just between the two of us, right?”
“Right,” POTUS nodded. He was so relieved Rihanna wasn’t amongst the named aliens. It would’ve killed him if his all-time celebrity crush was one of the little green people from Mars. She might be older now, but he still had endless hologram recordings of her in her hay days to feed his besotted eyes.
Something niggled him.
“Your Excellency, are all the aliens white people, or do we have any black aliens too?”
President King barked a grim laugh. “Sure thing. We got loads of black aliens, even yellow ones. They hold annual Alien Zoom meetings to catch up with their alien stuff. I hear Will Smith’s been begging them to let him into the meetings but they keep voting him out. I reckon the alien motherfuckers think he has too many lethal Men in Black anti-alien arsenals. So, they don’t trust him and who can blame them? Mind you, Will’s no alien, but the fashion designer guy that used to be a singer, Pharrell Williams, and the F1 champion, Sir Lewis Hamilton…” he paused and nodded grimly as POTUS’ eyes goggled. “Yep! Sorry to disappoint you, kiddo, but they’re both little green men too. Not forgetting the Korean megastar singer, Taemin. That guy doesn’t even need to hide the fact that he’s an alien. He looks like one and moves like one. Little wonder they call him the reincarnated Michael Jackson, who was another alien freak, by the way. Yeah, these alien fuckers have got their people practically in every country, although we have the most in America. I’m guessing Martians know a quality country when they see one. Fuck China!” The president glided closer till he was practically whispering. “You see, they send them down with special powers. The aliens we gotta fear are the singers and the drivers.”
President King caught the stunned look on POTUS’ face and nodded again with that hard smile that POTUS was starting to admire. It was a smile of power, of strength, of knowledge and ruthlessness. It was the kind of smile that said the president had the aliens well sourced and could handle them with ruthless ease.
SNEAK PEEK:
Then I see where I’m standing, at the edge of an ivy-covered gate, black iron, sharp-toothed rods I recognize well, even in the damp, cold night. The entrance to the Thorn Valley Cemetery. My freezing fingers lace tighter around Eva’s, and I look down at my bare, mud-caked feet. I’m in my blue satin nightgown, half-sheathed by my lace ivory bathrobe. Gasping, I cover myself and whirl around in the damp cold, searching the night for signs of life
or reason.
“Why am I here? What are we doing here?”
Eva releases my hand but keeps her eyes locked on mine as if I might disappear. She shakes as she tugs the quilt from her shoulders to wrap me in its warmth. “You had another spell,” she says, still trembling as she guides me away from the gate. “You were trying to climb up and over. Your sister called me and said you were gone, that your bedroom window was open, the curtains pulled wide. She woke up to make tea because she couldn’t sleep and had a feeling she should check on you.”
“Another dream.”
“Yes.”
“They’re getting worse.”
“I know.”
“I was . . . on the coast.” Dizzy and dazed, I pause for a beat to get my bearings. Eva stalls too, waiting patiently for me to find my balance. “The sea was coming for me, it wanted to drown me. I was running, then climbing . . . trying to climb toward the sky.” I can feel Eva’s horror, her pupils like frozen, black saucers stunned as they study my face.
“There was so much sun, so much blue, an unwavering stillness on land. But the sea . . . it roared, it wouldn’t stop reaching for me. I felt an earthquake, an imminent tsunami in the distance, even in the stillness. I couldn’t let it have me, I just couldn’t—” Eva takes hold of my shoulders, carefully turning me toward her. I know in that moment my eyes are tinged with a ripple of madness, and that she sees it, too. “This is going to stop.”
About The Authors:
DM Million: I grew up in southern New Jersey, reading fantasy and paranormal books. I love anything that whisks me away to another world, and I wanted to create my own worlds for readers like myself to enjoy. I believe reading is not only an escape from our real-world problems, but a way to expand our minds, keep us sharp, and bring us joy. What I love about books is that we can use our imaginations to “see” what the author sees. When we watch TV or a movie, we can turn off our creativity and mindlessly view what the creators intended for us. But reading requires the engaging of our creative minds. I hope that you will enjoy my stories as much as I have enjoyed writing them.
R. M. Carpus is the author of THE CITY WIFE and co-founder of Wraith House. Born in Philly and raised in sunny Southwest Florida, her nomadic spirit has carried her all over the U.S. She now resides in the moody Pacific Northwest, where she dwells with ghosts of the bygone grunge era, always on the lookout for Eddie Vedder, killer whales, and inspiration for the next book. When she’s not reading or writing, she’s engrossed in ’90s music and reruns, catching a film at SIFF, or hiding away in the San Juan Islands or the Olympic Peninsula. She loves animals, the ocean, and spooky season.
Enjoy this peek inside:
Ronnie Matarese felt a darkness descend upon him, even as he understood that it had always been there, pouring out from those eyes behind the sunglasses and into his apartment. A darkness as indifferent and as cold as the one that had greeted him when he’d returned home. A darkness that feared no light and could not be reasoned with. A darkness that was neither happy nor sad but just was.
Bobby “The Machete” Bonetti had not visited Ronnie to warn him or give him a beating. He had come to kill him. Ronnie suddenly knew this as surely as he was sitting there, and he was both terrified and furious that he hadn’t realized it sooner, when he still might have had a chance to escape. More than anything, though, Ronnie was sad. He wasn’t ready to die—he wasn’t even thirty—but there was no turning back from the elves at the bottom of these stairs. That was what this crazy SOB was trying to tell him.
Ronnie began to cry, softly at first then harder as Bobby finished his story.
“So my mother, she lets me go, but I just held on to the door- frame and didn’t dare look back. She was still there. I could hear her breathing. And in my mind, I watched her, mouth open and eyes blinking as she looked around like she usually did when she came out of one of her episodes. A minute later, I hear the sofa springs in the parlor. She’d been sleeping in there for weeks because the elves hid under her bed, she sometimes thought. But still, I didn’t move. I just stood there, staring down at the darkness in silence.”
Ronnie searched Bobby Bonetti’s sunglasses but saw only murder in the smudge of his reflection, light and shadows on a face that looked like a skull. This was not the way he was supposed to go out, sniveling on his bed like a pussy and not knowing why. And thatwas the hardest part. Not knowing why. Not knowing what he had done—no, not had done but would do. And just as quickly as the darkness had descended, Ronnie saw a light. It was faint at first but coming fast, like when he was speeding through the cross-harbor tunnel up in Boston.
“You said you were here because of something I would do,” Ron- nie said, making no attempt to hide the desperate, trembling hope in his voice. “Not because of something I did but because of something I would do. That’s what you said, right? What is it? Tell me what you think I’m gonna do, and I swear on the souls of my dead parents that I won’t do it. Please, I’m begging you, Mr. Bonetti. You have my word.”
“I would give anything to have that kind of silence again,” Bobby said. “A silence so precious that, when it’s broken, it stings you like a box of bees.”
Then Bobby shot him.
A Terror Triptych: Ireland
by Kasey Fallon
Publication date: October 1st 2024
Genres: Adult, Horror
Readers can expect three chilling tales, each steeped in Irish folklore, history, and psychological horror. A Terror Triptych: Ireland is the second set of short horror by Kasey Fallon, with stories that delve into the darker side of the Emerald Isle. Each story is accompanied by original poetry and hand-drawn illustrations, enhancing the atmospheric tension of the collection.
Dark Legends Reimagined
Legacy, the first story, traces the cursed history of the Clairy family. The Clairys have fed centuries of blood into the Fair Farm of Clairy, and as an ancient Gaelic god demands more, their desperate choices lead to devastating consequences. As Fallon writes, “This is the bed the Clairys have wrought. Generations of blood.”
The collection continues with Dungeons Under Dublin, where guards at an ancient prison discover why they should have left the old wing untouched. Fallon’s use of Irish settings is not merely for atmosphere, but to invoke the weight of the country’s past, its myths, and its lingering shadows. Readers can expect historical accuracy intertwined with unnerving fiction, making the horrors all the more visceral.
Finally, in The Dead House, the picturesque Aran Islands become the stage for Clara’s unnerving attraction to the only house on the island left to rot in haunting silence. As one reviewer noted, “These stories are flat out, bone-chilling, creepy… The psychological touch was there, that’s what makes you shiver.”
Legacy
“Da, I think he’s just… hungry, maybe?” Finn said, hesitant. He spoke quietly as the wind and rain died down.
Tiernan sniffled and looked at Finn with red eyes.
“He said what now?”
“He was just talking about gifts, and how he didn’t want any moldy bread anymore,” Finn said. “And Lughnasadh, he said the deal was for offers on Lughnasadh.”
“Offerings,” Tiernan corrected absently. His eyes narrowed on Finn.
“Did he say what the offerings are, Finn?”
Finn thought hard. Had The Comm specifically said what the presents were? There was the talk of old people… a whisper drifted over his shoulder.
“Nothing that isn’t already mine, young Clairy. All of Ireland is mine.”
Finn looked up at his Da.
“He said nothing that isn’t already his.”
The thing about being a smudge of darkness against a black backdrop is that no one ever sees you. That is until there’s smoke. I’ve always been a creature of the night. Not like a vamp—although that would be kind of badass. I wouldn’t ever want to be like the sparkly ones, but I wouldn’t have an aversion to the cult classic: razor sharp fangs with no morals kind. Like They Thirst or Salem’s Lot, but maybe with a little more humanity left inside the creatures. I could totally rock alongside The Lost Boys.
I’ve always clung to the shadows. It’s safe there. You know, like the night sky, or the stars. The twinkle of just that small bit of light breaking through this world. It knows me, unlike this place. This place is crawling with filters that no one else seems to notice—colored lenses that sharpen the edges of what most people, if given the chance, wouldn’t want to see. My Grandma Reanin used to say the same things. I guess that’s why I make so many people uncomfortable. I look for the details most people find cringy. Imagine if they knew the truth about me.
