When Kira Dawson moves to South Carolina, she meets Luke, a blond goofball who quickly becomes her best friend, and Tristan, a mysterious bad boy who sends shivers down her spine. Kira knows they’re keeping secrets, but when she discovers Tristan’s lust for blood and her own dormant mystical powers, Kira is forced to fight for her life and make the heartbreaking decision between the familiar comfort of friendship and the fiery passion of love.

RAVE REVIEWS for the Midnight Fire Series!

“The writing is effortlessly mind blowing. I could not put this entire series down. Once you’re hooked, you won’t either because it’ll eat you up not knowing what happened! And then you’ll pick a team like I did and you’ll fall in love with all the characters and you’ll want all the bad guys to die horribly! Just trust me when I say it really is your loss to miss out on this series! It’s a blaze of glory!” – Happy Tales and Tails Blog

“Kaitlyn Davis writes some of the best action scenes I have come across in a young adult book; they are fast paced and so well delivered making this more than just a silly romance.” – Reflections of a Bookworm

“The only downside to this series, is that it ended. But the ending was beautiful.” – My Seryniti

“Kira isn’t a human girl who is one dimensional and in love with a vampire. She’s a well-thought out character who comes to life from the pages and steals into your heart. Read the books. Do it.” – Urban Girl Reader

“I love and hate how fast of a read this was! I love it because I couldn’t get enough of it and hate it because once I finished I wanted more!” – I Just Wanna Sit Here And Read

“I really enjoyed Ms Davis’s writing, I was riveted throughout and was eager to see what would happen – there was drama, danger, action and romance that was wonderfully detailed and described.” – Obsession With Books

“You’ll make friends with Kira, choose sides with Tristan and Luke, and fall in love with the story at heart about a girl with so bright a future….even shades aren’t gonna cut it.” – Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers

Take a moment to enjoy this fun interview with Kaitlyn Davis

What gave you the inspiration to write the Midnight Fire series?

I‘ve always been a huge fan of vampire lore (what up, Buffy!)! If there was a book, I read it. A television show, I watched it. A movie, I rented it. But I’ve always thought there is some more epic way they could be killed! Beheading? So old school. Stake through the heart? Too overdone. Sunrise? Talk about passive.

But one day, I was walking on the beach, and suddenly it hit me—the sun! Magical beings who fought vampires by channeling the sun! Once that idea came to fruition, the story just flowed out of me.

Can you describe your Midnight Fire Series in three words?

Thrilling, shocking and, of course, romantic!

Who is your favorite character from your book and why?

So tough! I definitely fell in love with my two leading men, but I have to say my main character Kira has got to be my favorite! She is thrown so many curve balls and her life is turned completely upside down, but she manages to keep it together and persevere. I love a girl who can kick some ass and doesn’t let the boys fight her battles!

Did anything (or anyone) surprise you while writing your series?

Um… everything? I always go into my books with a solid outline, but the story somehow gets away from me and gains a life of its own—and I love that! In particular, the story line for one of my male leads really surprised me 🙂 I can’t say which one or I might give the ending away.

What scenes in the books are you most proud of, and why?

If we are talking about the first book, Ignite, I would have to say a scene in the middle of the book that takes place in the school auditorium—if you’ve read it, you know what I’m talking about! In that moment, I truly believe my series separates from the plethora of paranormal romances out there and blossoms into something entirely its own.

But on the other hand, if we’re talking about Scorch, the final book in the series, it would be the second chapter from the end… you’ll just have to read it to find out why 🙂

Is there a message in your series that you want readers to grasp?

Life is a journey and you have to make your own choices. Don’t let other people decide your fate for you.

Can you tell us a little about how the covers were designed?

Thank you–I designed them! Fire is just so brilliant and striking, I knew flames would really pop against a black-and-white backdrop. And, well, fire is a VERY important part of my story—it means life for some and death for others, and it defines the course of Kira’s life.

Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?

Trust in yourself and your fans. That is hands down the most important thing about being a writer in my humble opinion. There will always be an agent who rejects you, a reviewer who gives you one star, or someone else out there to hurt you in some way. It’s up to the writer to believe in his or her work, to continue pushing forward, and eventually it will payoff. Anytime I get a bad rating, I think about the amazing fans who comment on my Facebook wall, tweet at me or email me, and I know that I’m doing something right.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Write the story you want to tell—don’t worry about the trends, or what’s popular at the time, or what anyone else might think.

Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?

Anywhere and everywhere! Starbucks and my couch are probably the top two, but I also frequent the library, parks, and occasionally my desk 🙂 Normally, I like to write in the afternoon, but if I’m on a roll I’ll keep going until I fall asleep mid-sentence!

Do you read reviews written about your book?

Definitely! The great ones are amazing, and provide a much-needed ego-boost for those moments of complete self-doubt, but bad reviews have their place as well. No writer is perfect–at least I’m certainly not! And anytime someone gives useful criticism, I use it to improve upon my next writing endeavor.

What’s the hardest part of writing a book?

What comes after! During the writing process, I get totally lost in my own world and I let the characters take me on a journey. But after, I’m thrown back into real life and that’s when the doubts creep in! Will people like it? Does it suck? Is it totally boring? Is the romance completely flat? Can people see the curveball coming from a mile away? The hardest part about writing is cutting off those questions and trusting in the book I spent so much time crafting.

Who is your author idol?

It sounds cliché, but I have to say J.K. Rowling. To have your books touch the lives of so many people—it’s incredible! And even more so, I love that she took a chance on a new post-Harry project that was just completely different than anything she had written before. That takes guts!

State 5 random facts about yourself.

1) I’m scarily obsessed with puppies.

2) I chipped a tooth while surfboarding.

3) I’m a complete candy cane hoarder around Christmastime.

4) I love chick flicks—the cheesier, the better!

5) I detox with reality TV… and justify it as character research.

What’s up next for you?

In Feb 2014, I’ll be launching a new young adult epic fantasy series—think Game of Thrones meets Graceling! The first book is called The Shadow Soul, and it is about two magic wielding lost souls. A girl, Jinji, who can weave master illusions, and a boy, Whylrhen, who can pull burning flames into his flesh. But neither of them knows what they are truly capable of until a chance encounter brings them together. For their story has played out before, in a long forgotten time—an age of myth that is about to be reborn…

THE UNHOLY

By

Paul DeBlassie III

BLURB

A young curandera, a medicine woman, intent on uncovering the secrets of her past is forced into a life-and-death battle against an evil Archbishop. Set in the mystic land of Aztlan, The Unholy is a novel of destiny as healer and slayer. Native lore of dreams and visions, shape changing, and natural magic work to spin a neo-gothic web in which sadness and mystery lure the unsuspecting into a twilight realm of discovery and decision.

The Unholy Book Cover Banner copy

Excerpt

“Help me? Help yourself! Face what is yours to face,” Elizabeth hissed. She yanked the door open then forced it to slam behind her.

Claire stood still for a moment, feeling as if a tornado had swept through the room. Elizabeth’s demand had left her shaken. She drew a deep breath, then went to her desk and picked up her tea, noticing her trembling hands.

Turning toward the window, Claire saw a muscular orderly accompanying Elizabeth to the locked ward at the far end of the hospital compound. A flock of crows circled high overhead, seeming to follow the two receding figures. As they arrived at the outer doors of the locked unit, the orderly reached for his keys. The crows circled while the two crossed the threshold of the unit, Elizabeth suddenly pausing, turning, and looking outside, her gaze riveted on the flock of birds.

All but two flew off, disappearing into the piñon-covered hills. The two that remained came to rest on the red brick wall adjacent to the locked unit, their black eyes boring into Elizabeth. She looked panicked then enraged and, shaking a finger at the creatures, yelled something. Her frantic gestures told Claire that she was screeching curses to ward off evil.

Claire took a step back from the window, from the impact of Elizabeth’s rage.

The orderly grabbed Elizabeth roughly by the arm and pulled her inside.

The crows waited, watched, then flew away.

Elle Hill is here to answer a couple of questions about her writing process and her story. Enjoy this quick, fun interview.

hunted dreams AuthorPic

When starting a new book, do the characters come first or the storyline?

Rewind about four years to the genesis of my Hunted Series universe and Hunted, the first novella that would populate it and my thoughts went something like this:

Wouldn’t it be cool if there were a community living under human’s noses that bred women warriors and men magicians? Yeah, that’s cool. And they’d be at war with another supernatural group, one from whom they needed to protect humanity. Maybe that other group would eat humans. Not literally, though, ‘cause that’s kinda gross. At war for centuries, these groups wouldn’t know life without fighting; they can’t imagine life without hatred and death. Children would be trained as soon as they could hold a weapon. The two different groups would probably shove their members under one roof in order to protect them. Heck, I imagine the warriors would even sport names with one syllable, since, during battle, it’s a lot easier to call out “Bren” than “Anastasia.”

Now imagine one of those woman warriors. What would she be like? Probably pretty no-nonsense. Even if she cared to, she wouldn’t know anything about dating or nail polish or playing board games. What would happen if this ascetic warrior met a peace-loving, sweet human guy? She’d probably feel as uncomfortable around tenderness as he would feel knowing an entire supernatural war has raged invisibly for centuries.

Throw in a black cat named Picante, and you have the foundation for Hunted.

As you can probably tell from the example above, my plots and characters tend to inform one another. My story ideas usually start out as a small, conceptual seed (“What kind of character development could we explore if the main character remains locked inside her own head throughout the book?”) that blossoms into character sketches and arches, which in turn branches into specific scenes and situations. It’s all very organic.

Did the loop of nightmares lead to psychic vampires or vice versus?

In Hunted Dreams, Katana, the amnesiac main character, remains locked in an endless parade of nightmares. She doesn’t even realize she’s dreaming till a quarter of the way into the book, and only when Reed, the story’s male protagonist, begins visiting her dreamscape.

The pair tries to figure out who she is and why she can’t wake up. They discover the second first: Katana is trapped inside her brain because supernatural beings named Leeches (AKA, the Broschi) subsist on painful human emotions, and they wanted a continuous supply of snacks.

So, in short, the psychic vampires induced Katana’s endless nightmares, since the resulting pain, confusion, and terror benefit them mightily, that is, gustatorily.

Thanks so much for the opportunity to chat with you, Laura. Happy October!

Happy October to you too Elle. Hunted Dreams will be the perfect read for Halloween!

BLURB

Her history, her whereabouts, her name: She knows nothing. Nothing but her current reality: a constant stream of horrific, surrealistic scenarios in which she fights not only monsters and unseen attackers but also her own pain and despair.

Reed Jayvyn is an ex-Army vet, penniless and living in his truck. After saving a young man from attackers, he finds himself embroiled in a superhuman drama between the Broschi and the Clan, two groups engaged in a centuries-long war. Worse, he finds he is one of them—a Broschi, a psychic vampire that feeds off the pain of humans. But Reed’s greatest surprise comes each night, when he finds himself dreaming of a fierce, nameless woman.

She is dreaming. So says the handsome man who uses his heretofore latent psychic ability to flicker in and out of her dreamscape. With Reed’s help, she slowly learns more about who she is, why she is here, what trauma in her past keeps her locked inside her mind. Meanwhile, Reed explores his own heritage, discovering enemies and allies in unexpected places.

But most important to Reed is freeing this woman caught in an endless loop of nightmares, someone he considers in every way to be the woman of his dreams.

 ~~~~
Hook
A woman trapped in an endless cycle of nightmares. A handsome hero committed to rescuing her. It’s just like Sleeping Beauty – except the dreaming damsel is the sword wielder and the hero is a psychic vampire feeding off her pain.
~~~~

HuntedDreams_CoverBanner

Enjoy this glimpse inside.

“The Leeches got their nickname from the way they eat.” Reed’s voice was even.

“They drink blood?” she breathed.

He shook his head. “A little less literal. The Broschi are empathic. They can feel and even evoke other people’s feelings, negative ones like fear, pain, horror.”

“Sun and stars,” she breathed. She got it.

She got it.

“They’re eating me,” she said, and laughed, but not humorously. “These superhuman, psychic Leech people are keeping me trapped in nightmares, eating my feelings.” Her chest felt heavy. She pressed her left hand against it and felt its gentle rise and fall.

None of this is real. All this drama, all this fear, all the pain and anger and malice. None of it exists except in the form of juicy brainwaves that these beings sip like mint juleps. No wonder she couldn’t die, couldn’t escape, couldn’t ever wake up.

Reed’s face was flushed, his nostrils wide. Her handsome hero. For a minute, she hated him, hated that he got to wake up, hated this situation, hated everything boxing her in this narrow world.

Katana glared at him for a moment. “I’m trapped in here,” she grated.

His face relaxed into compassion. Hers hardened.

“I know,” he said.

She stared at him for a moment longer. Finally, with a sigh, she leaned her head against the glass. “Who are you, Reed?”

“I’m a Leech, too, Katana.”

An inveterate fan of fairy tales, particularly the darker ones, Elle pens paranormal romance. Image of Helen Harper

1. What are 5 things within touching distance?

A cup of green tea, The Fault In Our Stars by John Green, my PS3 remote, the telephone bill and one slightly snoring calico cat.

2. What is your least favorite word?

Whatever.  Although it’s probably more the tone of voice and intention that people use when they employ it to dismiss someone or something, spitting it out as if it’s a swearword that I really dislike.  I think it manages to convey utter disdain, apathy and disgust all at the same time, and it annoys me intensely.

3. What part of the writing process do you dread?

The last chapter.  I hate writing the ending of the books, even more so than editing or proofreading.  When I wrote my first book, Bloodfire, it took me a month to write the ending.  With Bloodmagic, I hammered out 80,000 words in three months and then it sat unopened on my computer for a full further six months because I didn’t want to write the ending.  I guess that maybe it’s because I enjoy writing the books so much that, when it gets to the end, I just don’t want it to be over.

4. What is your favorite Joke?

A horse walks into a bar and the barman says, ‘Why the long face?’

It’s a silly joke, but it was my dad’s favourite one.  He passed away five years ago now and it always makes me think of him fondly.

About Helen Harper and where to find her books

Image of Helen Harper

Helen Harper is an English teacher currently living abroad in Malaysia. As a long time reader of urban fantasy, she finally bit the bullet and began to develop her own series of novels.

Helen has always been a book lover, devouring science fiction and fantasy tales when she was a child growing up in Scotland. “I always loved the escapism provided by those genres,” states Helen. “No matter how bad life gets, you can always find a route out, even if only temporarily, in the pages of a good book.”

The growth of urban fantasy fascinated her – the mix of reality and fantasy along with strong heroic female characters appealed from the very beginning, and inspired her to write her own.

Night of the Chupacabra Synopsis:

There is a creature that lurks in the vast open deserts of the west. It can only survive on blood and, although it prefers to prey on the weak and young, it will slaughter anyone or anything, once provoked. It is unnatural, deceptive, and difficult to kill. Word about the existence of this elusive beast has not spread since anyone who has crossed paths with it did not live long enough to tell of their account.

In the Chupacabra Series, a vampire-like, cryptozoological creature (which literally translates to “goat-sucker”) takes a supporting role to a cast of memorable characters who struggle to survive while finding their place in developing America. Currently slated for six books, the Chupacabra Series echoes strong family themes and the sacrifices required for that nature of love; and while some characters do survive long enough to make it through multiple novels, each volume will host a different protagonist to lead the reader through its continuing journey.

Once the free days for the e-book of “Night of the Chupacabra” are over on September 12, and beginning September 13, the digital edition will continue to show support for its successor “Curse of the Chupacabra” by dropping its price from $4.99 to $2.99.

Curse of the Chupacabra” will be available in both print and e-book formats beginning September 10, 2013, and is now available for print Pre-Order on the author’s official webpage, www.michaelhebler.com, where more on the Chupacabra Series also can be found, as well as additional information on Hebler’s writings.

So Michael, let’s get to the interview!

1) I like that this book makes me feel like I’ve stepped back into time. Your writing is subtle, so I can’t put my finger on how you do it! I just feel the old west while reading:)

Thank you.  That’s such a wonderful compliment!  I’m not a doddler.  I like to keep things always moving and always fresh.  The subtleness probably stems from years and years of writing screenplays, which teaches a writer that less is more.  But we’ll see if you think the same after reading “Legend,” which has clocked in at 82,000 words, while “Curse” is 70,000.  And as for writing western, I can definitely pinpoint my inspiration to the movie “Unforgiven.”  It is one of my favorite films and treated the western like an authentic time period and not something you slap marinara on top of.  The western-style has definitely become second nature to me when it comes to the chupacabra.  I’m a little nervous about writing Book 5, “Return of the Chupacabra” because I feel it’ll be a challenge to remove the “western” since the series does not stay within the Old West.  However, books 5 & 6 will be good transition novels for what stories I dream up beyond the Chupacabra Series. I’m not sure I’ll be revisiting the Old West soon after the fourth chupacabra book, but you never know.

2) What you can tell us about future books in the series?

What’s that? You want me to talk about the overall Chupacabra Series? Oh, I couldn’t do… it all started when I finished the full story of “Night”—then just called ‘el Chupacabra.’  I had done tons of research and created such an elaborate world that it just felt wrong to leave it all behind so soon; besides, I had grown to love these characters so much (the ones who survived, at least) that I transitioned into an overbearing parental figure who couldn’t let go.  I know some of you who are reading this can relate… right?  I had made the decision to do a trilogy, and I wanted my second book, “Curse,” to be my Empire Strikes Back, and then promised myself to keep the Ewoks out of book three, “Legend.”  So, “Legend” will round out the trilogy, but just as in book’s one and two, the main protagonist will be different.  In fact, let me just state that each book in the series will have a new protagonist.

Going back to what I had originally stated about the time and detail it took to create this world and the mythology, I discovered I definitely had enough for a prequel book, which will be book four, “Dawn of the Chupacabra,” and is the book I am currently half through the first draft.  “Dawn” will be the most horrific book of the series (a hard R-rating) and I’ll give you a hint… the chupacabra doesn’t even show until over half-way through the story.  “Dawn” will also tie the short story I had written in 2011, “Hunt for the Chupacabra” to book one.

And that’s where the series will end its time in the 1800’s.  Leap forward about 105 years later to 1991 for book five, “Return of the Chupacabra,” the year when chupacabra sightings were first reported.  This is when the series will fall into place with the current chupacabra mythos.  With books one – four, I had the world at my feet to create a fictional origin story, but in all actuality, I purposely did not match it to the folklore known today, which I have received some criticism for.  But I never thought that mattered because it was why I started the series in the Old West; to allow more artistic license.  So, with book five, it will be a whole new paradigm; however the main theme will not change.  The Chupacabra Series has always been about love; not the romantic kind, but the family kind, which is an important part of Latin culture (mi familia).  That is why family love was chosen to be the main theme for this Latin folklore horror series because they are essentially related.  And as for the true chupacabra diehard fans out there, “Return” will be the book that will feel more like home.  Except for one or two questions that can only be answered by having read the previous volumes, it will basically be a standalone book.

Now originally, the series was supposed to end at five, but after outlining the story, I discovered that there was always meant to be a sixth, I just had yet to realize it.  “Blood of the Chupacabra” will be essential because it will bring the standalone story that is book 5 together with the first four books, to create a full circle in the series.

There you have it, and I think I did it without revealing any important plotlines or twists.  Whew!

3) Many authors say that reading a lot of books is important if you are serious about writing. Is that true for you, and if so, are there any authors who have influenced you?

While I agree with your statement and believe writers should read, I can’t say I’ve read tons of books.  My main problem is that I’m a SLOW reader, so reading a lot of books would take away all my writing time.  But don’t misunderstand, I have read my fair share and usually always have a book I’m reading.  In fact, right now, I’m about a quarter of the way through J.K. Rowling’s “The Casual Vacancy.”  I did start reading at an early age.  One day I closed the back cover of Dr. Seuss then opened the front cover of Stephen King.  My mom had a bookshelf filled with his books.  In fact, there was one particular book cover that influenced the cover of “Curse of the Chupacabra” which used to freak-me-the-hell-out as a pre-teen, yet I found it so intriguing, I couldn’t stop staring at it.  It was the original hardcover of Cujo.  For some reason, the dog’s snout was so prominent within the mist, I never saw the rest of Cujo’s head that was thinly veiled in the background.  All my eyes would see was this dripping snout, which looked like a scarier version of the trash monster’s eye in the original Star Wars movie (and probably why I liked the cover so much).  That faintness of Cujo was what inspired the chupacabra’s face in the train tunnel for “Curse of the Chupacabra.”  Childhood comes full-circle, yet again.  Now that I’m currently writing my fourth novel, I’m definitely starting to become aware of my subconscious influences more and more.  I think they would be: King, Rowling, Crichton, and Dickens.  King for his content, which is borderline horror but more about the mystery and characters; Rowling for her style of writing, its flow and structure; Crichton for his attention to detail; and Dickens for his remarkable sense of plot and story.

4) Was it easier to write and publish Curse of the Chupacabra as it’s the second book in the series?

Oh yes!  I definitely learned a lot during, and after, “Night of the Chupacabra.”  Of course, with the first book, it was basically a learning process.  The time spent from the first written word of “Curse” to handing my baby over to the printers, like a parent sending their child to their first day of school, was chopped in half.  In fact, I’m already finding “Legend” an easier process because of having learned from two books, and its 12,000 words longer!  I’m sure they’ll keep getting easier and easier the more I write.  Being able to write and publish a book in my sleep… that’s my goal!

5) Do you have any tips you’d like to share with other writers?

Hmm.  Know your audience, that’s definitely one I’d like to share and one I’ve struggled with myself.  However, admittedly, I only did it to myself because I wanted to write a series that had a little bit of everything for everyone.  Also, if you’re lucky enough to have a folder (internal or external) of ideas that you are excited to write, begin with the one that is the most commercial.  Do your research and discover what the biggest genre is, which is probably YA at the moment, and start there.  You have a better chance of making a name for yourself and that will open doors which will allow you to pull out the more genre specific ideas from that folder.  Your follower base will have already been established.  I don’t think “The Casual Vacancy” would have done as well if Rowling hadn’t written “Harry Potter” first.

6) How do you spend your free time?

LOL!  What free time!?  Seriously, I think I’m always working on something.  It’s really difficult for me to sit still and not be productive in some way.  In addition to writing, I also have a career as a film publicist.  I just got back from a junket in New York (by the way, long plane trips are an author’s best friend) and am gearing up to promote a film at the Toronto Film Festival.  When I’m not writing or publicizing, I do volunteer as a driver for Meals on Wheels in my local area, as well as participate in the C/S/N/R (capture/spay/neuter/release) program; animals are my weakness.  And if I’m not doing any of that, I’ll write up a post for my blog, watch TV or a movie, play a video game, or read.  And that last bit might sound like fun time, but I’m usually on the prowl for my next inspiration.

Five Fun Shorts!

1) Morning person or snooze button? – Morning person.  There is nothing like the stillness and tranquility of the world before it awakes.

2) Favorite book to movie? – The Color Purple.  The movie’s been my favorite since 1985, and of course, I had to read the book.

3) For the good guy or the bad guy? – Bad guy.  Even though they’re bad, they’re still the underdog.

4) Favorite cartoon? – The original Scooby-Doo’s from the ‘70s—the ones that had a musical number chase interlude.

5) Are you superstitious? – I have to say “no”; however, I do occasionally find myself knocking on wood and avoiding cracks on the ground.

Well that was a lot of fun! Thanks so much Michael. Lots to think about and thrilled to know there will be many more Chupacabra books!

Curse of the Chupacabra Synopsis

They never thought their luck would be their curse.  In the months following the onslaught, the extraordinary survivors continue to know no peace, as they are haunted by signs that the relentless creature remains on their trail.  However, this fight will be better matched, now that they’ve discovered an advantage that will help protect them from the monster’s bloodthirsty lust.  But once faced with the decision to kill the beast, the choice will not come lightly since it is still unclear which loved one the chupacabra possesses.

My Review

You can run but you cannot hide!

Not many survived the last faceoff with the Chupacabra.

Suzanne was one of the lucky few.

Now she’s running, with a young girl in tow, trying to stay as far ahead of the beast as she can. Suzanne should’ve known Jessie wouldn’t stay with the older couple that took her in. She’s resourceful and cunning and wants to be with Suzanne.

But Suzanne, once a prostitute, can barely take care of herself and thinks Jessie would be better off with someone else.

The decision is taken out of their hands when the chupacabra finds Jessie and she barely escapes it bloody clutches.

Again, they run and there’s nowhere to hide.

The chupacabra is back!

Sadly, most of the characters from Night of the Chupacabra, the first book, aren’t. They didn’t survive.

Suzanne did and I’m glad. She may have had to resort to the oldest profession in order to get by, there weren’t many opportunities for women in the old west, but she’s kind of heart, astute, and charmingly vulnerable.

Another survivor is Jessie. She’s young and bold, a real scrapper too. She’s been trying to manipulate Suzanne into letting her stay, and she does something really crazy that puts Suzanne in a vulnerable situation.

It turns out good though, as Suzanne’s rescuer is a tall drink of water named James. He’s an actor traveling with a theatre group and he saved her from a brutal assault by a scoundrel.

James is quite the gentlemen and he’s charmed by Suzannes beauty. Wanting to keep her near, he invites the two ladies to travel with the troupe.

What they don’t know is, they are about to have an uninvited guest. A really angry one.

Something I’ve always loved is character driven novels. I’m a people person and have to have someone to care about, someone to laugh with, and someone to loathe.

I have all of those in Curse of the Chupacabra and that’s not including the chupacabra.

He is back and scarier than ever. Boy is he ever.

The author has a different take on the legend of the chupacabra which makes for confusing feelings towards it. It adds to the suspense, for sure.

Lots of laughs, some tender moments, and scares galore. I had so much fun continuing with this series.

Synopsis
.
.
All Cleo wants, all she’s ever wanted, is the acceptance of her tribe and the love of her family… and she almost dies trying to earn it. But the man who saved her, who found beauty in her flaws and loved her without condition, has cruelly betrayed her, and she’s dying all over again.
Was it all lies? His words, his promises, his kisses? Lost in unfamiliar territory, Cleo will fight the forces that conspire to destroy her homeland, even if she has to do it alone.
Libra longs for freedom—from prison, from pretense, and from his birthright… but he’s caught in a political game where only greed and power can win, and Cleo Rush is the pawn. How much is he willing to sacrifice for liberty? His morals, his principles, the woman he loves? No matter which path he chooses, people will die, their blood on his hands. And it could be hers.

1)     What’s the scoop on the romance? Why can’t the hero and heroine get on with their sweet loving?

You’d think, since he saved her life, that Cleo would instantly fall into Libra’s arms in a heap of grateful, quivering lady-love. The physical chemistry is undeniable, but she doesn’t trust the urbanite as far as she could spit.

Cleo is a ‘triber’ from the Taiga forest and Libra hails from the city of Gomeda. They have some serious misconceptions to overcome and it doesn’t help that they’re both lying through their teeth about, well,… everything.

2)     What the heck is a Taiga?

Also known as a boreal forest, the Taiga (pronounced ty-guh) is the world’s largest land biome and comprises 29% of the world’s forest. It circles the globe, with the largest bits located in Russia and Canada. The winters are long, cold and harsh. In Jump Zone, the Taiga is divided into regional tribes named for common animals like wolverine, beaver, bear, wolf, moose, etc…

Survivalists by nature, the tribers are protective of their lands, and their resources. Especially their energy source. Shhh… spoilers!

3)     What makes Jump Zone’s hero sexy?

Libra is the Robin Hood of Gomeda. Born into a wealthy, powerful family, he eschews his high-born status and fights for the marginalized citizens living in the slums of Gomeda. His idealism gets him a sentence of hard labor in the penal colony but it also gives him the hardened edge he needs to survive the coming turmoil.

4)     Fave line?

“For the record, I’ve never killed another human being. Not even a Banger.” Cleo Rush says this when defending her reputation against Libra’s assumptions that she’s some kind of savage. Second fave is, “You’ve never had bacon? You poor, deprived soul.”  Because… obviously!

5)     Where did you get the idea for your story?

I had an idea for a post-apocalyptic Romeo and Juliet type of story but the world didn’t begin building in my head until a family vacation took us on a drive through Northern Ontario. The untamed beauty of the landscape literally took my breath away. Miles and miles of uninhabited land, a stunning palette of greens and dark blues, harsh rocky outcrops. I thought, “What if I had to survive out here…”

6)     Is this a stand-alone or part of a series?

Cleo Falls is book one of the Jump Zone trilogy. Libra Rising is scheduled to release in December 2013, followed by the series conclusion in the spring of 2014.

Taiga Forest

I’d always presumed the moments before death would be fuzzy and warm.

They’re not. Death is painful. And cold.

Death is terrifying.

For me, there are no sepia vignettes of my childhood, no sign of my mother’s smiling face to usher me into a blissful afterlife, open armed. There’s nothing to distract me from the fright that slams me every time my mouth fills, every time my head slips under.

No matter how hard I kick or thrash, the current is merciless, dragging me downriver, closer to the edge, closer to the—

I can’t even think the word.

I claw for the surface, flailing desperately for something to grab onto. But there’s nothing. Not a rock, not a log, not even a stray root. Even if by some miracle I don’t drown, there is nothing to save me from the fall.

Seventy feet, straight down.

And the rocks at the bottom… I’ll be smashed.

My chest burns so bad, I want to scream from it. Can’t, don’t dare. I bite down on the inside of my lips to seal them from another mouthful of icy water and taste the copper of my blood. I will my legs to get me to the surface for another breath, but I’m tumbling through the blackness, not sure which way is up.

The rapids twist and toss me, pull me fast and hard as if they’re doing me a favor in getting me to the edge quickly. It’ll be over soon. Yet every agonizing second feels never-ending.

The more my muscles ache from cold, the heavier my limbs become, the slower time goes. Death is a cruel bitch.

My lungs are on fire. And no matter that my eyeballs feel like they’ve been dunked in acid, panic won’t let me close them.

There’s a legend amongst my people of a Ghost Warrior, a survivalist from Old Canada who lost his life in the Polar Wars. They say he guides folks home in their time of need, gives them a second chance. Where is this phantom rescuer for me? Am I not worthy?

I already know the answer…

The pressure in my chest begins to crack me open. I acknowledge my fate, look it in the eye, welcome it. The thought frees me. The simple act of mental acquiescence releases my fear, replaces it with regret. And anger. I’ll never get a chance to make amends to my tribe, to Jaegar or my father, never feel the love I’ve tried so hard, so damned hard, to earn.

Anger fuels my strength, gives me a final burst of energy. My anaesthetized legs push off of something solid. My head breaches the surface.

I scream in Death’s face.

Then water fills me, douses my fire. I am numb, unable to feel my extremities, unable to feel anything. Like a piece of flotsam, the current tosses me over the precipice toward the jagged rocks below. My world goes dark.

AUTHOR BIO
Almost every author says they wanted to write from a very early age. Not me. I wanted to be a detective like Nancy Drew, or a wildlife expert like Jim Fowler or an archaeologist like Indiana Jones. Or have my own island resort and make fantasies come true!
I didn’t do too badly with any of those… I married a detective, worked in a zoo, explored ship wrecks instead of old ruins, and spent 18 glorious years living on a sunny island.
As for those fantasies… I also write erotic romance as Wylie Kinson. Happy reading!

This is going to be so fun!

I have my sister and fellow blogger, Sherry, here to tell us all about herself and her blog.

She recently moved her blog and I wanted to reach out to all of you wonderful people and let you know where she is now!

Many of you followed her before and now you can follow her again.

She’d love to see you again and new followers are most welcome.

Hope over to fundinmental and say hi!

Sherry is also a  photographer. All of the pictures in this post except for the mermaid and the creepy crawlie spider video are hers.

The picture of her pool doesn’t do justice to it in person. The Tiki hut is always piping out the tunes and we have enjoyed hundreds of hours of splashing and soaking up the sun.

Have fun getting to know Sherry. She’s revealin it all today!

S rock D_0813

     Okay, reveal yourself! Well, you know what I mean, tell us a little about yourself:)
.
Shhhh.  That’s a secret. Okay about me. Hmmmm. I love reading and photography. My biggest goal in life was to live as near to the water as I could afford. When I moved south, I bought a house with a pool. If I could afford beachfront, I would be there in a heartbeat. The beach is, sort of, just around the corner, plus there is a small man-made lake at the end of my street and we have access.
~S pool IMG_3578
I am a water and sun worshipper, too late to worry about the wrinkles. I think they give me character.
.
     How did you get into blogging and what were your plans for it?
.
My sister, Laura, here at fuonlyknew, got me hooked. But in a good way. LOL She introduced me to Goodreads, then WordPress, and the rest is history. We occasionally do team reviews and promos for authors. My main purpose was to have fun and share my love of books. I didn’t know it would become so addictive.
.
     You recently moved your blog. That must have been a huge undertaking. What was it like?
.
Moving my blog was something I really didn’t want to do, but it was necessary. I am self-taught on the computer, so I recruited some help. I now have a computer guy who comes to my aid when I am totally stumped. I have also had to learn a lot on my own, which I think is a good thing. When I wasn’t wigging out, it was fun and a challenge.
There were lots of things that didn’t transfer well. I lost my followers and my media library. The media library wasn’t too bad. I already had the photos saved on my computer, so it was just a matter of reloading them into my blog library. Just a time thing.
Probably the biggest thing that bummed me out, I lost all my followers. So please help me find you again. If you were following me before and would still like to keep up with fundinmental, please come on over and follow by email again. I would love to see you hanging out with me.
If I promised you a Review, they will be coming. I was waiting to do this interview with Laura, so I could reach more of my followers and let them know I didn’t vanish, just got lost for a little while. Laura and I have a lot of the same followers because of our similar tastes, so with her help I hope to reach out to all of you and let you know that I have not forgotten any of you and want to stay connected.
Another hassle was the links changed, so I have tried to notify authors of their new links and let them know that I am still around. If you are someone I haven’t contacted and you need or want the new links, shoot me an email (sherryfundin69 at netscape dot net) and I will get them to you.

     How do you select books for review on your blog?
.
Before I moved here, I must have had thousands of books, with bookshelves in every nook and cranny of my house. They were taking over, but I didn’t have the heart to give them away. They were my babies. When I moved here, I sold or donated the majority and just kept my favorites, that I have read at least three times over.
One of the first things I did when I got here was join the library. I have always been a big fan of libraries and would take a big bag, loading it up with 10 or more books a week. I would pick an author and clear the shelf. LOL Because my nearest library was kind of small, I was soon reading authors I never would have chosen otherwise. I think I have read at least half the books in this branch.
My hubby bought me a Kindle and all of a sudden I had access to more books than I can read in my lifetime. Unless, some dark night, a Vampire comes by and gives me a bite.
Online, I started to do R2R, at Laura’s suggestion, and before I knew it, authors were approaching me, asking for Reviews. My biggest problem, which is probably a pretty common one, is taking on too many. I can read through books very quickly, but my Reviews tend to take me almost as long. LOL
.
     Do you have a favorite genre and is there one  that’s surprised you?
.
My favorite genre is thriller/mystery. Horror is a close second, but I used to go for Stephen King and Dean Koontz  type of horror. Probably my biggest surprise is my love for Vampires, with Romance right there with it. I had not be a big fan of either, but the great Indie writers and their superb stories have enchanted me, in a very good way.
.
  What do you like to do for fun, besides blogging?
.
Reading and Photography are my favorite activities, but I love doing the beach and hanging by the pool. A lot of times, I will be hanging on the patio, blogging, reading or taking photos while also taking a dip every now and then. I love piddling in the yard. Recently, my hubby and I have started surf fishing. That even sounds fun. Not only can I fish and drink a cold beer, I have my Kindle at my side. What more can you ask for?
I also like to hack around the golf course. Talk about a frustrating game. Trying to hit a little white ball, all the time dodging the snakes in the woods and the gators in the ponds.

    If you won a free vacation, where would you go?
.
Wow. I love the Caribbean!! I have taken numerous cruises to visit the islands. When I lived in New York, my hubby and I took three cruises within six months to Bermuda. I almost felt at home there. My biggest desire now is to go to the Florida Keys. I have wanted to go there for a long time. Hop in the car and drive down the Gulf Coast, stopping whenever and wherever the urge hits. I want to go to the end of the coast and moon Cuba. I actually mooned the Caymans once, because the water was too rough and they wouldn’t come out and pick us up. I never got to go to Hell and mail my postcard.
But, a freebie, I think it would have to be a month long Mediterranean Cruise. Hit everywhere possible. I always think of it as the Caribbean of the East. And it is something I will probably never do because of the expense.
My hubby and I love to see as much as possible, as cheap as possible, snapping pics and video right and left. Everywhere we go there is water and beaches. It’s like a drug and we have to have our fix.

Now for Five Fun Shorts!
.
  Favorite footwear?  Barefoot, oh that’s naked. Flip flops.
.
 Swimsuit or skinny dip? Half and half. Around my pool, well, I’ll leave that to your imagination. I went topless on South Beach once. At least I looked better than the 300 pound woman and the 90 year old Grandma. ^_^
.
  Sky diving or scuba diving? First off – I don’t fly well, so you might not want to sit next to me on a plane, especially if there is turbulence. Second, once in a plane, if you think I am going to jump out of it, well, you must be out of your mind.
I don’t do either, but if I did, it would have to be scuba diving. My hubby calls me his mermaid. ^_^ There is a reason for that.
.
  Do you have a phobia? Spiders!!!!!!!!! I got a chill just typing that. I hate spiders.
Sneaky little buggers. Now you see them, now you don’t.

     Favorite TV Show.
.
Hmmm. I confess, I am a TVaholic. I am usually reading or blogging, maybe doing some crossword puzzles, teaching myself to make jewelry or something else, while I am watching TV. I never JUST watch TV. But my favorite – that is a toughy.
Of course, there is usually a hot guy. Not the young sluts, but the real men. Mark Harmon has always been a favorite of mine, so NCIS is right up there at the top. He does a celebrity baseball game every year. He came to Mobile, Alabama and I got a press pass. Got a baseball signed by him and my pic taken with him.
I love watching the Mentalist, Castle, Person of Interest, Big Bang Theory, Two Broke Girls, Two and a Half Men….I  love sitcoms. I love to laugh. One of the best medicines of life. So – HEY – come on over and lets talk and laugh and have some fun. The pool is now OPEN.
~
A Dare!
.
LOL. That’s funny, because if I don’t have a quick comeback, I usually draw a blank. But I immediately thought of my hubby, who has dared me to do so many things. Sometimes I look back and think – what the hell – why did I even do that. But, am I going to tell you? Now that is something else. Maybe after we spend some time together, as we hang out and get to know one another, something will slip out every now and then.
.
Say the first thing that pops into your mind. I dare ya!
.
Damn girl, you got me rambling on and on and on and on…………
~~~
Congrats on your trophy Sherry.
Another Redneck Riviera Mullet Toss triumph!
Love ya sis!
Sherry and I do some tag teaming also. We post reviews for authors on the same day, promoting their books with our individual views. We have spent many a day by her refreshing pool, sippin Margaritas or Bloody Mary’s and tweaking our reviews. It’s funny how differently we perceive the material we read.
We often laugh about it afterwards and it is great to give varying points of view for an authors books.
We are always surprised when we read each others reviews.
~
Summer is finally here on the Gulf Coast and Sherry and I will be spending many a day at her pool.
Stop by fundinmental and give her a follow. See what she’s cookin up!
Interview with Bella Andre
about her best-selling series, The Sullivans
1. You create characters beautifully and are an absolute master of plot twists. It seems like you could write in almost any genre and do a bang-up job of it. What made you decide to devote your efforts to the romance genre in particular?
Thank you so much for the compliments! I’ve always been a huge romance fan – I’ve been reading nearly a book a day since I was a teenager – so it was a natural fit for me when the characters starting appearing in my head one day. 🙂
2. How did the idea for this interconnected contemporary romance series first come to you? What was your inspiration?
I love the family series that have always been popular in historical romance – like Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series and Nora Roberts’s MacGregors – and I was also inspired by my husband’s large family. It seemed like a natural fit to combine the funny and sweet family dynamics into an overarching series of sexy contemporary romances with the alpha heroes that I love so much.
3. Everyone seems to have a favorite Sullivan. Now I know this is like asking you to choose between your own children, but who is your favorite? And who’s most like you?
I’ll have to plead the fifth and pick Mary Sullivan – the family matriarch – as my favorite Sullivan. She’s the heart that keeps the family together and I get emotional whenever I write a scene with her. In fact, in COME A LITTLE BIT CLOSER (Smith Sullivan’s story), the scene where he calls his mother to ask for love advice is one that so many readers have told me is their absolute favorite scene in any Sullivan book.
As for who is most like me – maybe Sophie Sullivan from I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU. She loves to read (and is a librarian) and when she wants something (in her case: bad boy Jake McCann), she goes for it! Of course, I’m also a lot like Lori Sullivan (aka “Naughty”) with her big mouth and constant laughter.
4. In your opinion, what ingredients are needed to make up a good love story? Is life the same as fiction in this respect? Why or why not?
I love to love my characters and when I write a story I need two heroic, nice, good people (and why not gorgeous, too?!) who deserve love and have a lot of love to offer in return, but who are flawed partially because they haven’t found that perfect someone who complements them like no other. I like my fiction to be a little bigger than life – the Sullivans are extraordinarily hot, sensitive and attentive – but at their heart, they’re all very real.
5. How has your own love story with your husband informed the Sullivan series? Are there any scenes that are directly taken from your own life?
I have the best husband in the entire world. Sweet, loving, sensitive…and super hot! He’s always supported me in everything I’ve ever done and I think his strength and capability to love is at the core of every hero I write.
With that said, none of the scenes are ever taken directly from my own life. I have a very active imagination. 🙂
6. Let’s pretend for a second that you are a single woman living in the world of the Sullivans, which of the six brothers would you be most likely to fall in love with and why?
Ohhhh, now THAT is a fun fantasy! I would fall in love with each and every single one of them – and do, while I’m writing each of their stories! If I had to pick one, I might have my eye on Marcus (FROM THIS MOMENT ON) – because while all of my Sullivans are sweet, sexy and sensitive – Marcus is the only one with his own endless supply of wine from his winery. And there’s just something about the oldest brother…. Then again, Zach Sullivan is such a great combination of cocky and sweet. And Ryan Sullivan has all those muscles. And Gabe is such a hero as a firefighter (and I love his dirty talking between the sheets). And Chase is so sexy and protective. And then there’s Jake McCann (who falls in love with Sophie Sullivan) with his tattoos and big muscles. Not to mention Lori’s hero in the upcoming ALWAYS ON MY MIND which will be out this spring. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Lori’s hero just might be the hottest hero I’ve ever written.
See, what did I tell you earlier? I’m no good at picking just one. So let’s just say, yet again, ALL OF THEM!
7. The Sullivans and their beaux have some pretty interesting careers. From photographers and sculptors to professional actors, musicians and ball players all the way to firefighters, librarians and business owners, they lead very exciting lives! What type of research did you have to do to capture these jobs so well? Do you have any interesting research anecdotes to share?
I’ve written firefighters and athletes in previous series which helped with my firefighter, Gabe (CAN’T HELP FALLING IN LOVE) and my baseball player, Ryan (LET ME BE THE ONE). I also live in Sonoma and have a lot of experience with wine and wineries which was ideal for winery owner Marcus (FROM THIS MOMENT ON) and as a writer I’ve been blessed to work with many librarians who served as information points for Sophie (I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU.)
For books where I need inspiration, the internet has been amazing and when needed, I also call on the help of professionals. Even though I’d written firefighters before, I still sent all my firefighting scenes to a professional and for Smith’s book (COME A LITTLE BIT CLOSER) I sent all the acting-set sequences to a local film producer.
8. I was very touched by the inclusion of Yorkie puppy, Cuddles, and Great Dane rescue, Atlas, in book five, If You Were Mine. Are you a dog person yourself? If you have pets, I’d love to know more about them!
I *love* animals. I had the best time writing the two dogs in IF YOU WERE MINE. They had their own little love story in that book, which pleased me to no end. There’s a cat that plays a very important role in ALWAYS ON MY MIND (Lori Sullivan’s story, coming Spring 2013). My whole family loves animals, and we’ve recently adopted a beautiful cat. Or more accurately, the cat has adopted us, smart little minx.
9. The Sullivan series is currently seven volumes long. How many more books do you have planned, and which other family members will get the spotlight in their own books?
Lori’s book (ALWAYS ON MY MIND) is up next, and there are 5 Seattle Sullivans who are ready for love – I will start with Rafe Sullivan’s book this summer! Plus, I have something *very* special planned for Mary Sullivan, their mother, planned to release for the holidays in 2013.
10. And lastly (for a bit of random fun), what has been the most amazing/ touching/ validating interaction you’ve had with a fan of your books?
Everyone who has ever written to me on Facebook or Twitter or Goodreads or via email to tell me how much they love my books and that the Sullivans have moved them in some way has touched me. I love my fans, so, so much! I have the very best time in the world writing about my Sullivans… and knowing that I have so many absolutely wonderful people waiting to read them as soon as they’re released is a total thrill every single day.
