The Fall of Lord Drayson

Who is he really? A high and mighty Lord, or a lowly servant?

When Colin Cavendish, the new earl of Drayson, informs Lucy Beresford that she and her mother have two months to vacate the house they’ve called home for the past two years, Lucy is fit to be tied. They have no money, no relations they can turn to for help, and nowhere to go. How dare the earl break the promise his father had made to the Beresfords without so much as a twinge of conscience?

Mere hours later, Lucy discovers the earl unconscious and injured in the middle of the road. Grudgingly, she takes him into her home to tend to his wounds, but when he awakens with no recollection of who he is, Lucy seizes the opportunity to teach a much-needed lesson in humility. Pushing her own twinge of conscience aside, she informs the earl of Drayson that he is nothing more than a mere servant. Her servant, in fact.

And thus begins the charming tale of a pompous lord and an impetuous young woman, caught together in a web so tangled that it begs the question: Will they ever get out?

The Last Dinner Party

My Review

What’s a little murder among friends? Well, that’s what you’ll be trying to figure out after Jeanie’s cozy dinner party ends, serving up her dead body.

There’s quite a list of suspects. You’ll come to know all of their secrets as Anna Cole and Kristy Hicks begin their investigation.

There is plenty of misdirection to keep you guessing, not just from the characters, but from the author too. Keeps you on your toes and curious to discover just who the dastardly killer is. And when you do learn who did it and why, you’ll be surprised, or maybe not.

I liked Anna and Kristy. They didn’t pull punches during the investigation. But they did stumble as conflicts of trust sprang up between them. Their personal turmoils added more intrigue to the story.

As for all of those suspects. It’ sure was a mixed bag to choose from. I can’t say I really liked any of them. Many were wishy washy, and some were bad people even if they didn’t commit the murder. I guess being under suspicion of murder brings out the worst in some people.

I enjoyed this mystery, following clues and meeting the characters. And I’ll be following the series to see how Anna and Kristy are doing.

Book Excerpt:

She opened her eyes only once she heard the apartment’s front door close. She couldn’t even bring herself to turn over in the bed despite her discomfort, for she didn’t want a single mattress coil’s shift to alert him to the fact that she was awake. She waited a moment, lying in her bed, pausing in case he had forgotten anything, but the sound of footsteps faded into the distance.

Meryl Brunetti had been awake for twenty minutes, but she wasn’t prepared to begin the day. Not until he was gone. She didn’t want to see him, she didn’t want to talk, and she certainly wasn’t prepared to deal with anything they’d discussed the night before. She needed more time, and she needed to figure out how she felt.

Instead of waking up at seven o’clock to make him breakfast as usual, to start his day on a pleasant note, and see him out the door, she slept. Or, rather, she pretended to sleep. She’d been unable to sleep the night before. Her mind twirled with anger, despair, and uncertainty.

When she heard the sound of the shower signally the beginning of his day this morning, she felt drowsiness weigh on her eyelids, as though his impending exit might cause her relief. She felt her mind quiet, and forced herself to keep her eyes shut. She wouldn’t rise and she wouldn’t make a sound. She couldn’t bear to see his face. Not after last night. She’d have to pretend later that she’d accidentally slept in.

Maybe she could blame oversleeping on the alcohol. She’d need some excuse, given the average schedule she kept, which rivaled military rising hours. She might be able to blame a hangover for her tardiness depending how closely anyone was counting her cocktails last night. As a rule, she vowed always to have a drink in hand at any social gathering both as an accessory (she could never figure out a comfortable, natural place for her hands), and an ordinary pause in conversation (she often took a sip when she couldn’t think of the next thing she wanted to say.) As a result, she appeared to always have a glass in hand, but she rarely drank with the same fury as some of her louder, and more entertaining friends.

After he left their home, when she heard the click of the lock in place behind him, she emerged from the bed and walked with purpose to the coffee maker. She brewed the first pot of coffee for the day. There would be at least one and perhaps two that followed, depending on her afternoon.

The morning light that flooded into the apartment seemed excessive this particular morning. On any other morning, Meryl would relish in the beautiful daylight that overtook her home, but today she had the beginning of a headache, perhaps from lack of sleep, and she pulled the living room curtains closed.

She wanted to spend a rare day in her pajamas without responsibility, but she couldn’t afford such a day. She never could. Every day, there were endless duties to address. There was the grocery shopping, preparing for her next book club meeting, picking up or dropping off the dry cleaning, meeting with other mothers on various committees, baking for fundraisers, and sometimes making multiple trips to the high school to drop off a meal or some piece of sports equipment that her son had forgotten.

Meryl loved to be busy. The constant buzz of her life made her feel like more than the housewife she was, but she sometimes secretly dreamed of a day off from cooking dinner, and wished she didn’t have to have the answers to every question her family members posed. They trusted her to know all, and she usually did, but the exhausting task of running more lives than her own was far too much for her to think about today. She wished she could sleep away her thoughts and responsibilities.

BLOOD ON THE BAYOU is A Cafferty & Quinn Series Novella brought to you by 1001 Dark Nights.

Blood on the Bayou - cover

Amazon eBook ** Amazon Paperback

Excerpt:

Michael Quinn heard the hysterical crying the minute he entered the police station. The young woman creating the commotion was inside Detective Jake Larue’s office. Someone else was trying to soothe her while not becoming hysterical herself.

“This one is right up your alley,” Larue told him as he approached.

“My alley?”

“That young woman is certain she saw a rougarou. She was on a bayou tour in Honey Swamp last night.”

He smiled. No kid grew up in Southern Louisiana without hearing about the rougarou. Every region of the world had their own particular brand of monster. The rougarou belonged to the Cajun region of Southern Louisiana, stretching right into the city.

“Honey Swamp?” he asked. “Doesn’t a problem in that area go to the Pearl River police?”

“Yep,” Larue said. “But she’s here because she believes the rougarou followed her home, showing up in the window of her hotel last night.”

He arched a brow at the ridiculousness of the statement. “I’m assuming there’s more.”

“A dead man in the swamp. Head bashed in, throat ripped.”

Which grabbed his attention.

“I want you to talk to them,” Larue said. “I told them that you’re a rougarou expert and that you’ll get to the bottom of things. They were out on some night ghost tour in the bayou and their boat came upon the dead man. Right now, she’s so hysterical that she’s not making sense. But you rougarouexperts are used to dealing with that.”

He shook his head at Larue’s sarcasm. He was no more a rougarou expert than someone was a ghost expert. Once upon a time, he’d worked with Larue as partners in the NYPD. Before that, Quinn’s life had been anything but normal. He’d actually been a pretty horrible person, not as in deadly or criminal, but as in vain and egotistical. His prowess in sports had led to excess, which eventually led to him being declared legally dead.

Which changed everything.

About BLOOD ON THE BAYOU: A Cafferty & Quinn Novella

From New York Times bestseller Heather Graham…

It’s winter and a chill has settled over New Orleans, binding a stream of blood that leads a tourist to a dead man, face down in the bayou.

The man has been done in by a vicious beating, so violent that his skull has been crashed in.

It’s barely a day before a second victim is found . . . once again so badly thrashed that the water runs red. The city becomes riddled with fear.

An old family friend comes to Danni Cafferty, telling her that he’s terrified, he’s certain that he’s received a message from the Blood Bayou killer–It’s your turn to pay, blood on the bayou.

The two quickly become involved, and–as they all begin to realize that a gruesome local history is being repeated–they find themselves in a fight to save not just a friend, but, perhaps, their very own lives.

The ideal gift for mystery and wine lovers — An immersion in French countryside, gourmet attitude, and light-hearted mystery.

Master winemaker Benjamin Cooker and his sidekick Virgile Lanssien solve mysteries in vineyards with a dose of Epicurean enjoyment of fine food and beverage. Each story is a homage to wine and winemakers, as well as a mystery.

In Treachery in Bordeaux, barrels at the prestigious grand cru Moniales Haut-Brion wine estate in Bordeaux have been contaminated. Is it negligence or sabotage?

In Grand Cru Heist, Benjamin Cooker’s world gets turned upside down one night in Paris. He retreats to the region around Tours to recover. He and his assistant Virgile turn PI to solve two murders and a very particular heist.

In Nightmare in Burgundy, a dream wine tasting trip to Burgundy turns into a troubling nightmare when Cooker and his assistant stumble upon a mystery revolving around messages from another era.

Dead In A Park

by B.L. Blair

DeadInAPark cover

Genre: Mystery / Romance

Synopsis

When Leah Norwood finds the body of Donald Collins in the city park, she doesn’t know he is a distant relative. Young Donnie was a jewel thief and a career criminal. Hidden in the lining of his suit jacket was an exact replica of a ring that has been in Leah’s family for over a hundred years. After her home is burglarized, the sexy chief of police is convinced the ruby ring has something to do with the murder.

Leah wants to find out what happened to Donnie, but why would someone kill for a hundred year old ring? She discovers a connection between Donnie and the drug-dealing Cantono family, between the Cantono family and a jewelry appraiser, and between the jewelry appraiser and one of her own employees. Chief Griggs might be onto something. All clues lead back to the family ring.

Excerpt

“Was he murdered?” I asked softly.

“Oh, yes. It was murder,” Griggs replied.

The last time I found a body it had never occurred to me that the police would consider me a suspect. As a law-abiding citizen, I had just assumed that people knew I was innocent. My experience with the police showed me I was wrong. I looked at both Griggs and Reddish.

“Please tell me you don’t think I killed him.”

Griggs snorted. “No, we don’t think you killed him. He was taller than you, and his neck was broken. No way could you have done that.”

“It was fast and neat,” Reddish added and then turned to Griggs. “Probably someone with military or combat training.”

“Someone who knows how to kill with their hands,” Griggs said softly.

I swallowed. Candace had shot and killed two people in December and tried to kill me twice. She had been crazy, her behavior unexpected and unpredictable, which had made the situation scary. This sounded worse. A person who was calm and rational murdering someone with their bare hands was chilling. And I couldn’t forget about the weird shoe thing.

“Did you find his shoes?”

“No,” Griggs replied, turning toward me.

“Why would someone want his shoes?”

“Who knows? There wasn’t much of a struggle, although there were multiple sets of footprints. But all appeared to be made by people wearing shoes.” He turned away from me and back toward Reddish. “Between Leah and her dog stomping around, I doubt we’ll get any viable footprints.”

“Hey,” I said indignantly. Both men ignored me.

“Let’s keep the area secure anyway,” Griggs continued. “Send a team out to see if they can find anything. Maybe the shoes will show up somewhere else in the park.”

My Review

A quick, fun mystery that young readers can sharpen their sleuthing skills with.

Young Mike is in his parents pet shop when Nicole, a girl he has a crush on, rushes in pleading for help in finding her missing dog.

Mike and his twin sister Maddie, along with some friends, join Nicole in her search, starting at the last place the dog was seen.

This story isn’t very long, the clues are fun and not too hard to follow, and the friendships are genuine.

I loved reading adventures like this when I was young, and I still do. This would be an exciting series with delightful characters for young readers to enjoy.

I received this book for my honest review.

KISS KILL LOVE HIM STILL

Haddie pauses at the door before holding it open for me. “After you.”
Shouting erupts from across the parking lot. Four-letter expletives fill the air. The guy, the one whose car I stole, is walking toward me in handcuffs and a police escort.
They work quickly around here.
“You little bitch,” he snarls as he passes me. “What did you tell them? What?”
I grin and toss my head back, letting a laugh tumble out of me. “Have fun in there,” I say. “It’s a swell place.”
Haddie places her hand on my arm. “Really, Livie. Do you need to take it to that level?”
“What level?” I say, batting my eyelashes. “He tried to make me a felon. Only fair he gets a little of the action himself.”
Haddie bites her lip and leads me over to a Toyota Camry. I would have pegged her more as a VW Bug kind of chick, being round and oh-so-jolly like her, but I guess plain and boring is about the same thing.
A flash of cherry red catches my eye, and I spy the BMW convertible in the impound lot. Too bad it’s locked up. Driving it was a million orgasms worth of fun. I shut my eyes and remember Jax standing up in the passenger seat, his hair blowing in the wind, as I sped down the freeway.
Oh, Jax. Why, why, why did you have to die?
“Where would you like to go?” Haddie says with the most Goddamn sincere voice I’ve ever heard. It’s like she has a zillion girl scouts living in her pudgy body.
“Jax’s. I need to pick up some things.” Like all of my Louis Vuitton bags, my Hermes scarves, and of course, my Chanel everything.
She sits in the driver seat and tilts her head. “And that would be where?”
“39 Cherrywood Drive.”
Haddie slowly backs out of the parking space, and the car crawls toward the exit. “Can’t you make this thing go any faster?”
“Like the BMW you stole?”
How did she know that? “I didn’t steal it. That guy gave it to me in exchange for…favors.”
“So you’re claiming prostitution?” Haddie says with a smirk. “Nicely done.”
“That man knows what he did. He knows I didn’t steal the car.” I force my jaw together to keep any more information from spilling out.
“Really? Then why did they impound it?”
I shrug. “Don’t know.”
“It is interesting that they’d impound your car when you’re claiming prostitution.” We’re at a stoplight, and she turns her head to look at me. “But it must not be too bad if they let you off without bail.”
That surprised me too. Ruiz had mentioned bail, but they let me walk out on my own accord. I keep my mouth sewn shut.
Haddie must notice how hard I’m trying to keep it together because she laughs. “Not everyone is buying the prostitution story, Livie.” She signals and turns the corner. Jesus, can’t she go faster? “I know you stole that car, and I’m pretty sure Regina Walker knows too.”
Cool sweat pricks at the back of my neck. Who was this girl? And how does she know so much about me?

My Review

Jack McBride has a past. A wife who’s AWOL and a defunct career with the FBI. He leaves all the rumors behind and takes a job as chief of police in the small town of Stillwater, hoping for less crime and more time to devote to his son, Ethan.

What Jack doesn’t expect is a staged crime scene of murder/suicide, and a cold case rising from the grave when skeletal remains are uncovered in the woods. No coasting along in this town. He’s neck deep in rumors, gossip, conspiracy, and suspicions.

Ethan may be only thirteen years old and labeled a troublemaker, but what I see is a chip off the old block. He has his father’s curiosity, penchant for seeing through the lies, and a natural talent at observing people and scenes. He’s confused about his mother’s disappearance, and angry at his father, always testing him, but he knowsJack loves him and begins to see that as they adjust to their new life.

I don’t want to forget Ellie Martin. She grew up in Stillwater and knows everybody and pretty much everything that’s happened there. She’s had a rough life, but she’s moving on, starting her own business and leaving all the bad behind. She hopes.

Jack turns to Ellie for help with the towns history and denizens, and is surprised to feel a growing attracting towards her. He can’t seem to stop thinking about her

Ellie isn’t wanting anything to do with Jack. He’s big city, she’s small town. He’s got a questionable marriage status and she’s recovering from a really bad one. But, she can’t seem to stop thinking about him either.

Hmm, me thinks a romance is happening whether either of them wants it or not. I love those kind. Leads to all kinds of humorous dialogue and situations. Lightens the mood and gives you something more to hope for.

I wish I was good at explaining. This book doesn’t have many big action scenes all through it. There’s a lot of meet and greet and following the main characters. getting to know them, learning what makes them tick. It’s compelling. That’s the word. The writing is so good you’re compelled to keep reading. It doesn’t feel slow or boring. It keeps you reading, seeking answers, hoping for what you want to happen to really happen.

A solid mystery. Genuine characters. Compelling writing. It all works to give you a great read.

Synopsis

Former FBI agent Jack McBride took the job as Chief of Police for Stillwater, Texas, to start a new life with his teenage son, Ethan, away from the suspicions that surrounded his wife’s disappearance a year earlier.

With a low crime rate and a five-man police force, he expected it to be a nice, easy gig; hot checks, traffic violations, some drugs, occasional domestic disturbances, and petty theft. Instead, within a week he is investigating a staged murder-suicide, uncovering a decades’ old skeleton buried in the woods, and managing the first crime wave in thirty years.

For help navigating his unfamiliar, small-town surroundings, Jack turns to Ellie Martin, one of the most respected women in town—her scandal-filled past notwithstanding. Despite Jack’s murky marriage status and the disapproval of Ethan and the town, they are immediately drawn to each other.

As Jack and Ellie struggle with their budding relationship, they unearth shattering secrets long buried and discover the two cases Jack is working, though fifty years apart, share a surprising connection that will rattle the town to its core.
