Summer Sunrise

Sunrise in the mountains is a majestic and moving sight

It undresses the cloak of darkness and brings the world light To the east a rosy blush begins as earth embraces the dawn Curtains of night are lifted and its shadows soon withdrawn

Tendrils of light steal down the cavernous canyons tall Like fingers of liquid lava running down a volcano wall

Caressing the cliffs and painting a sheen on their snowy faces An artist’s hand and a pastel palette touching many places

Tree by tree tree the forest takes on a new found tinge The seas too are painted from their centre to their fringe

A kaleidoscope of colour as you watch the masterpiece unfold With subtle grace and beauty like an alluring dream untold

Rays of sunlight kiss the soft belly of the fluffy clouds Brushing them with chameleon colours endlessly endowed The world awakens in the sun’s tender soft-hued glow, Each ray a promise, a new day of heartfelt hope to sow.

From darkness to light, there is a magical transition A celestial ballet in a splendid and stately exhibition The wind seems to whisper softly dispelling all fears As a chorus of songbirds add their comforting cheers

The sun ascends faster now as purples turn to gold Bringing its welcoming warmth and dispelling the cold The sky is suddenly ablaze with the early morning light Finally vanquishing the demons of the daunting night

Enjoy Nature’s peace and grandeur as it percolates within Let your heart be touched and feel a solemn serenity begin Cast aside your worries, your troubles and your woes
As renewal begins and a blissful energy soon flows

I am a retired physician who has been blessed with the opportunity to live in one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring places on earth: Vancouver Island. Throughout my life I have remained intimately connected to nature. I consider it an alternate classroom and a timeless and thought-provoking teacher. It has taught me many enduring life lessons.

Beloved, take me back

to that feeling space

in dream time

where I can easily navigate

my yellow submarine

with its pink propeller of love

while laughing at the absurdity

of being a character

in your psychedelic cartoon

Laughing and crying tears of tangerines

floating endlessly

in my submarine of love,

silly, as it swims endlessly in you

I give up, I have no clue

why I continue to exist on your playground

For the moment I will keep crying and laughing

tears of tangerines

until there are enough

for a giant glass of your morning juice

Then, I hope that when you drink it

you will laugh at this cartoon,

put it down

and I can go back to composing poetry

to the tune of

“We all live in Beloved’s submarine

Laughing and crying tangerines of pure love

floating through galaxies and universes

sharing our love fruit with all

in Beloved’s wild cartoon of Love”

Rayan, a talented 27-year-old author, hails from Sudan, North Africa. She moved to Canada at the tender age of four, where she has cultivated a unique voice in the literary world. Though she discovered her passion for writing later in life, it was in 2019 that she first picked up a pen to craft love letters, a genre that has since become her signature.

Known for her wit and quiet demeanor around most people, Rayan’s true personality shines brightly when she is among her loved ones, where her loud and vibrant nature comes to life. Her writing reflects this duality, blending sharp humour with heartfelt emotion to create deeply resonant works that captivate her readers.

fame and fortune

 

his voice insinuates itself

to repeat his songs

in your loving ears,

so that wherever you go

you see him in your mind

and hear his love returning yours

as the refrain echoes

in your lonely heart,

making your empty head think,

inspiring the realisation

that for all his supposed success

he’s still not really satisfied

nor immensely happy

 

that’s because he recognises

that fame and fortune

have led to old friends

turning their faces away

when they see him on the street

because they can’t stand to hear

how he’s eclipsed them—

not what he thinks,

but which they believe

in their dreamless,

too-frequently jealous minds,

 

all of them evidently incapable

of comprehending,

or perhaps conveniently forgetting,

the sacrifices he’s had to make

to achieve this level of celebrity,

or that he’s serious when he says

that he’d gladly chuck the lot

if only he could go back

to the days when he was poor,

struggling and sleeping on floors

and have his friends’ love again

 

which I would think

is probably what explains

the sadness which has crept

into so many of the songs

he’s writing nowadays

Peter Hynes is a Canadian. He began writing poetry many years ago, in high school. His poetry has been published in various anthologies and elsewhere since. This is his first book of poems. He was born in southwestern Ontario. He still lives in the province with his wife and their small menagerie.
