Cara Devon has always suffered curiosity and impetuousness, but tangling with a serial killer might cure that. Permanently.

London, 1861. Impoverished noble Cara has a simple mission after the

strange death of her father – sell off his damned collection of

priceless artifacts. Her plan goes awry when aristocratic beauties start

dying of broken hearts, an eight inch long brass key hammered through

their chests. A killer hunts amongst the nobility, searching for a regal

beauty and an ancient Egyptian relic rumored to hold the key to

immortality.

Her Majesty’s Enforcers are in pursuit of the murderer and they see a

connection between the gruesome deaths and Cara. So does she, somewhere

in London her father hid Nefertiti’s Heart, a fist sized diamond with

strange mechanical workings. Adding further complication to her life,

notorious crime lord, Viscount Nathaniel Lyons is relentless in his

desire to lay his hands on Cara and the priceless artifact. If only she

could figure out his motive.

Self-preservation fuels Cara’s search for the gem. In a society where

everyone wears a mask to hide their true intent, she needs to figure

out who to trust, before she makes a fatal mistake.

My Review

I like character driven stories, whether movies or books. Sometimes I don’t quite connect with them. I don’t know why, maybe it’s just one of those days. I didn’t connect with some of the characters in Nefertiti’s Heart, the first book in this series.

While reading Hatshepsut’s Collar, the magic happened, and in a big way.

Not only did I fall in love with Nate and Cara and their growing romance, Nan and Nessy kept my curiosity piqued and gave me many a chuckle.

One that really stood out was Loki, the Trickster, Nate’s pirate captain and best friend. He’s quite the devilish charmer. You have to keep your wits about you with him.

The story takes place not too long after the first book. The author does a good job recapping past events and catching you up, then it’s a hip hop from England to Russia as Nate and Cara try to protect the queen from the influence of Hatshepsut’s Collar and prove Nate’s innocence after he’s accused of high treason.

I want to talk about Nate and Cara a bit more.

While I liked her in the first book and felt for her, I really came to love her in this second book. She’s stronger, more determined and confident, and she’s one of those people who’s very presence is felt when she enters a room. She reminds me of a feline, purring one moment and spitting mad the next. Her love for Nate is tested when she learns his huge secret. It was an ‘oh no’ moment for me.

Nate is sexy and sardonic, sure in his love for Cara, but fears what his secret will do to their relationship. It’s still blooming and while the bond forged between them by Nefertiti’s Heart is powerful, he can’t be sure what Cara will do.

Now to the romance. I read both books back to back and while referring to my notes, I mistakenly mentioned the romance between Nate and Cara in Nefertiti’s Heart was steamy erotic in my review. That wasn’t so and I corrected it. It was meant to be mentioned in this second review as the romance is steamy from the get go.

I also mentioned in my review of book one that I felt the second book might be even better and it is. The authors writing just seemed to reach inside me and grab hold. I’m thinking I should reread the first book and see how I feel afterward. Sometimes your mood can affect how you receive a story.

An adventure wrought with danger, some humor to take the edge off, and steamy romance await. Hatshepsut’s Collar is a great continuation in this series and I very much recommend it.

A couple teasers to whet your appetite.

“Could you saddle a horse, please? A real one..”

And this from Cara to Nate:

“Despite you being an arrogant, dangerous, pig-headed man, I love you. Our hearts are bound. I can’t conceal anything from you. You only have to look inside for answers.”

****

An ancient Egyptian artifact is driving Queen Victoria insane, and that’s not top of Cara Devon’s growing list of problems.

Viscount Nathaniel Lyons is a man of numerous secrets, but there is one in particular that threatens his fledgling relationship with Cara. Stunned by Nate’s revelation, and before she can absorb the ramifications of his actions, he is arrested, charged with treason and imprisoned in the grim Tower of London. He stole something the mad queen wants, and only has days to deliver, before his date with the executioner.

Although sorely tempted, Cara can’t let him die on Tower Green, not when their connection means she would share his fate.

Only together can Cara and Nate figure out how to wrestle Hatshepsut’s Collar from around the queen’s neck, before she plunges Britain into a world war. The search for answers sends Cara to the opulent Winter Palace of St Petersburg and the frozen depths of Siberia, with every step shadowed by an enemy with his own dark plans.

My Review

Many people tagged this as steampunk, but I’m going with a Victorian murder mystery with elements of steampunk. For instance, there are mechanical horses that pull the carriages, cyborg servers, and mechanical artifacts.

I would have liked to see more of those elements, but the murder mystery more than filled the gap. The way the victims were slain had  an ancient ritualistic feel to them and were pretty brutal. The author kept me hopping from suspect to suspect and it was in no way obvious who the killer was.

I was also expecting more swashbuckling action as Nathaniel Lords was a sky pirate with his own airship. He does play the dual roles of villain and hero quite well. He sent the thugs to recover an artifact and they almost killed Cara. Later, I’m sure he’s glad they didn’t.

After many years away, Cara returned to London to settle her father’s affairs upon his passing. Not surprising, she’s only interested in the money to be had. Afterall, he did sell her into slavery to protect his precious artifacts. If she can follow his clues and recover them, she’ll be a very rich woman. Luck was on her side when the thugs attacked her, because she survived.

About the characters. There weren’t many I connected with. I did become fond of Cara, but some of her choices didn’t feel quite right. After her traumatic past, she seemed to accept Nates attention rather easily.

Maybe it’s because of her past that she was willing to let him assume the alpha role and stay under his wing. How do I know what’s the appropriate response and actions. That’s where fiction steps in and takes you where it does. I just let go and enjoyed the ride.

The romance between the two main characters is rather quick and hints at something more serious to come.

While Nefertiti’s Heart wasn’t quite what I was expecting, it was entertaining and my favorite part, the serial murderer, was very well done. I’m thinking the next book, Hatshepsut’s Collar, will have more fun and intrigue, and like with most books in a series, be even better. I’ll be reading it to find out.

My Review

So here’s the skinny. Sylva is a necromancer and along with her friends, they raise the dead so loved ones can say goodbye and they also help in criminal cases.

The raising on their party cruise doesn’t quite go as expected. Soon the ship is overrun with slathering zombies and the gore fest begins.

It just so happens this is the two-year anniversary for the death of Sylva’s boyfriend Brandon.

Imagine her surprise when she discovers he’s very much alive.

How could I resist another zombie story. Seems like I’ve been reading a lot of them and am always surprised at how much I enjoy them. The Confessions of Sylva Slasher joins that rank.

There’s no easing into it with this book. The first chapter gave me chill bumps.

Then the next chapter takes you back several hours earlier.  I just knew something was going to go wrong with the raising, but the author rocked me back in my seat when he let loose that shocker. Sure didn’t see it coming.

And that’s the way it is all through this book.

Sylva finds out her dead boyfriend isn’t, she’s up to her eyeballs in zombies, and a weird being that moves so fast she can only glimpse a black blur and a bushy tail had me wondering who, if any, might survive the cruise.

I couldn’t imagine being trapped on a ship with all this going on. There’s nowhere to run, no rescue waiting on the other end of your 911 call. It’s all up to you whether you live or die.

The unexpected curve balls the author threw at me had me wondering how there could be a happy ending. I’m not going to tell you whether it was or not, I’m just going to say it was good, real good.

I’ve never been on a cruise and I’m now rethinking that desire. The apocalypse is coming, don’t ya know.

Synopsis

A spring break trip on a cruise presents a new problem for Sylva. Passengers on the ship turn into flesh-eating zombies, unlike the harmless ones she’s used to raising from the dead. She and her friends are trapped on the Pacific Ocean, and their only escape comes from a guy Sylva had a crush on she thought was dead, named Brandon. Sylva doesn’t normally hold grudges, but when someone plays with her heart they have to pay. However, with the fate of the human race on the line, Brandon convinces Sylva to join him in a secret mission, yet she can’t shake the feeling that he’s hiding something.

It didn’t take long for her suspicions to hold true when it’s revealed that Brandon has been romantically involved with the very enemy he now wants her to destroy. This villainous female would rather kill Brandon than let Sylva have a chance to patch things up between them. Sylva is not the kind of girl to walk away from love without a fight, but with a strange virus threatening extinction of human life, she shoves her own feelings in her back pocket to face her greatest nightmare, and that nightmare starts with something that is eerily growing right inside of her own mind and body.

An exciting excerpt

A treat for Buffy fans–but 100% Ace Antonio Hall‘s own twisted vision. Breathes new life into the living dead; run, don’t shamble to get a copy.”  —Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo Award-winning author of Red Planet Blues

The deadheads slithered, scraped, and shuffled closer and closer. There must have been more than twenty of them ready to tear me apart like hungry wolves. The stench of old rot surrounded me like poison vapors. A chorus of low moans, high whines, and wispy breaths oozed hymnals of my persecution into my ears.

Judgment day. I laid at the altar of the dead waiting to be sacrificed to whoever won ownership of my soul, fear or fearlessness.

I’m not afraid.

Their mangled, distorted faces came into view. How could eyes be so distant, yet so full of hunger? It seemed like they were looking past me—through me into another dimension. Or maybe they could already see which organs they wanted to devour. Their moans found a common craving for death, but their minds were lost somewhere in those useless bodies that kept creeping closer and closer to me, bending and turning in awkward movements. From the ground looking up, they lurched over me like oversized lumps of tumorous blobs, drooling with their mouths agape on their sagging grotesque faces.

I lied. I am afraid.

Pure terror crawled into my ears, listening to their sliding and scraping—more and more deadheads appeared, crowding around me, stretching their necks, and spilling those long vacant looks all over me. They filled my blurry vision with various shapes of disheveled hair and blended shades of disfigured bodies.

The horror of my eyes being torn from my face and viscera clenched between their teeth as they gnawed on my bones and licked the fluids from the insides of my body from their lips became too much to bare.

Something ticked on the ground like an animal approached, its claws pecking as it crept cautiously.

Kla-tick. Kla-tick. Kla-tick. Kla-tick.

It came toward me from a distance. Each step grew louder, bigger. I inhaled, realizing that for some time, I had been holding my breath, frozen with fear. Could it be? No, not now—not now. With my head too stiff to turn and my back broken, I locked my tearful blurry vision on a hazy full moon that seemed to shine a spotlight of death upon me. I spat out a tiny whisper. It’s time to die, again.

About Ace Antonio-Hall

Ace Antonio Hall

Ace Antonio-Hall was first published in 1998 in an AdelphiUniversity publication called Luna, with a short story titled “1936.” After earning his BFA degree from Long   IslandUniversity, he taught middle-school English for over ten years.

He now lives in southern California, and was the Vice President of the Greater Los Angeles Writers Society (2009-2011), and still holds an executive position in the organization which gives him a huge platform to market, sell, and promote his work through the many conferences, meetings and book fairs that GLAWS holds each month. He is also a member of LASFS and the International Thriller Writers.

His first novel, a coming-of-age YA zombie story, The Confessions of Sylva Slasher, was released April 2013 by Montag Press. It is part of a series with the next book Skateboard Xombies, expected for release early next year.

About the writing life, he says: “I harmlessly dream in Technicolor nightmares, watch a ton of horror flicks, eat more donuts than I should, and refuse to stop reading Spider-Man. All of those combined give me a sweet tooth to write about the suite life of zombies.”

Ace’s true labor of love is writing fast-paced fiction with character-driven plots featuring female protagonists. He continues to write short stories and build on the world of teen necromancer Sylva Slasher as she reigns as Princess of the Undead.

My Review

If you’ve read Tragically Flawed, you may remember Drexel. If not, you won’t forget him after reading Tragic Desires.

Gemini ignores her boyfriends concerns and takes her mountain bike on the trails alone. The water softened path gives way and sends her tumbling down the hill. She survives, but her concussion leaves her with headaches that are so severe, she can no longer function and she turns to alcohol and pills to get through each day. After her boyfriend breaks up with her she has no reason to stay and moves back to Texas. Her life is a living hell and she establishes a pattern. Curl up and hide during the day, cruise the bars at night, make her drug connection, go home and crash, repeat.

Drexel is a private investigator and agrees to help out his friend from the FBI with a suspected human trafficking case. While casing a bar in the Dirty Sixth district for a likely victim, he spots Gemini and keeps an eye on her. When the traffickers snatch her, he rescues her but it turns out someone else is after her too.

Gemini was a strong, self-confident, go – getter before her accident. At first I thought her actions when Drexel rescued her would foolhardy, not believable. But I was talking to my sister and it made me pause. She’s not that person anymore. She’s gone from fearless to afraid to even drive a car. She’s in a fog from pain and meds and who would be able to react rationally with that going on.

Drexel turned me off at first. His thoughts when he first meets Gemini were sexual and it rubbed me wrong. He’s supposed to be preventing her kidnapping and he’s thinking about getting her in bed? What’s with that? Then I realized I was reading this from a man’s point of view. They say a guy thinks about sex every….well, when isn’t he? So once I adjusted my thinking, it worked and I let myself experience Drexel as a man, not how I would think, but how he thought. Then he grew on me.

With terrorists determined to get their hands on Gemini, her mysterious past and a letter from her dead mother revealing something that rocks her to her core, and Drexel’s troubling past, the romance between these two was intense. They say sex is a natural reaction after traumatic events and these two were already attracted to each other so keeping their hands to themselves went out the window. It made this story that much more believable and exciting.

This is definitely not for younger readers. I was blushing and feeling like I was going to get caught doing something naughty, like peeking through a keyhole.

Lots of suspense and danger to go with the romance and can be read as a stand alone. As usual I got more than I was expecting from A.M. Hargrove.

Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn’t do something soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life.  So, she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase.  Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodge ball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head.  Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what laptop out the window.  She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone, called her boss and quit her job.  Grinning, she made another call to her hubs and told him of her new adventure (after making sure his heart was beating properly again).

So began A. M. Hargrove’s career as a YA/NA and Adult Romance writer. Her books include the following: Edge of Disaster, Shattered Edge and Kissing Fire (The Edge Series); The Guardians of Vesturon series (Survival, Resurrection, Determinant, reEmergent and Beginnings); Dark Waltz and Tragically Flawed.

Other than being in love with writing about being in love, she loves chocolate, ice cream and coffee and is positive they should be added as part of the USDA food groups.

I was curious about this story after reading the synopsis. I don’t usually use one in my reviews but I’ll let you read this one.

Synopsis from Goodreads

Hailey Parrish is quick-witted, irreverent, and hasn’t had a date in three years. She only wanted an eBook reader because her collection of paperbacks threatened to take over her small living space. Little did she know that the “special offers” that prompted the purchase included much more than a reduced price in exchange for a few ads. The device came pre-loaded with the essence of Sebastian Kess, an erudite womanizer with magical abilities from a parallel dimension. When she inadvertently releases him and he inhabits her body, she finally has a man inside her, just not in the way she imagined. And soon her predicament introduces her to yet another supernatural, the handsome could-be-the-man-of-her-dreams Alex Sunderland. Can Alex and Hailey find a way to return Sebastian to his own body, stay one step ahead of the criminals who want to keep him where he is, and not lose their sense of humor?

My Review

It’s something new for me and naturally I had to read Special Offers. I really like the title. It ties in neatly with the book.

The first thing that popped into my head when I read it was a genie in a magic lamp!

magic lamp photo: A magic lamp topmaqnipulationmagik.jpg

I thought, Wow, a new take for an old tale. I thought it was quite creative. Don’t know if that was the authors basis, but it works for me.

From the beginning I knew I liked Hailey. She is so normal and genuine. I could relate to her, right down to her eating habits. I too stand at the kitchen sink and chow down sometimes. When you are cooking for one, why make a mess at the table to clean up. And her daily routines. I also feel like a robot going through the motions half awake.

Her life is anything but routine when she purchases the Kindle and presses the on button. It came fully loaded. Loaded with the essence, or spirit, of Sebastian, a Coursodon from another dimension. And now he’s inside her. She can hear him in her head.

Along comes Alex. He’s another Coursodon and he has been tracking Sebastian, trying to return him to his body. He comes clean about who and what he is to Hailey. He’ll be needing her help. This part made me laugh!

I knew you were too good  looking to be in insurance,” I remarked flippantly and he shot me a reproachful glare. “Hey, when I get nervous, the smart-ass just comes cascading out of my mouth,” I shrugged. “It’s a character flaw. Get over it.”

What Hailey lacks in size, she makes up for with her snarky, tough as nails attitude.  I ‘d enjoy hanging with her.

Sebastian and Alex can communicate with each other when Alex is in physical contact with Hailey. They will be holding hands a lot. The plan is to find where Sebastian’s body has been taken, and return his essence to it. That means Hailey will have to be present.

Hailey adjusts to having Sebastian in her head, but she doesn’t have to like it. He is a very sexual male and his frustrations are very front and center at times.  Hailey’s having none of his suggestion that she bed someone to satisfy his needs. She’s not going to be his “psychic f!!k buddie.”

Hailey is slow in trusting Alex. She had a shitty marriage with a low down cheating husband and her heart took a major hit. She is very attracted to Alex, but will take it slow and easy. I like how the author keeps the heat of their relationship for the end. I thoroughly enjoyed the getting to know you parts.

My connection to Alex was gradual, but became very strong near the end. His revelations to Hailey made me want to hug him. And this scene is just so heart melting:

Alex was already in my bed under the covers, and I paused for a moment when I saw he had claimed the left side. Since as far back as I can remember, I’ve always slept on the left side of any bed bigger than a twin. It’s probably just habit, and after my initial hesitation, I started over to the opposite side, because, really, what’s the big deal about one side over another? As I pulled back the covers, however, Alex stopped me.

“Wait,” he said as he scooted over to his right. “I was just warming up your side for you.”

He held up the covers in the spot he had just vacated and I dutifully moved around the bed and climbed in. The sheets were, indeed, warm and cozy, a far cry from the chilliness that winter usually imparts to bedding.

That is the most considerate thing anyone has ever done for me,” I said softly. “I really don’t deserve you.”

Alex is a keeper.

As their feelings for each grow so does the danger and intrigue. Sebastian’s body is being held as a trophy by his nemesis and it won’t be easy to get it back.

Thumbs up to Special Offers. M. L. Ryan has a winner for originality and her quality of writing. She took what could have been heavy reading and made it light and fun.  Throughout the book, tidbits of everyday things in life made it very real.

And the comedy kept me laughing. I had many laugh out loud moments, like when Hailey teases Sebastian with a view of her sexy friend Rachel, and about her job – she milks Chinchillas. And the back and forth with Sebastian, in her head, is too funny!

Special Offers came along at a low point, and it was a perfect cure for my blues. It will make you laugh and smile, cheering you up.

Here are some scenes I really cracked up at:

“By the way, how did you get my number?”

“Men’s bathroom wall, second stall,” he stated matter-of-factly.

“Excuse me?”

“Just trying to lighten the mood…”

And this one:

I really had enough of Sebastian at the moment. “Hey Sebastard,” I sputtered. “Yumago! Do prdele! Haista paska! Jabiesz jeze! Foda-se!”

“What was all that?”

I stood and huffed out, Korean, Czech, Finnish, Polish and Portugese!”

I started this book with a peek. Next thing I knew I was on Chapter 4. I fell asleep reading it the first night. Couldn’t stay awake. Tried to finish it the next night, and so tired from work I fell asleep again. Getting frustrated! I had a surprise day off the next morning and finished it while my son was in the dentist’s chair. People were giving me funny looks when I chuckled. I ended up talking to two women in the waiting room, and they said they were going to check it out.

You should check it out too. It’s a perfect book to lighten your mood and make you smile.

Blurb

What would you do if you discovered there was a parallel dimension?

Hailey Parrish used to be an average, everyday human. Boring, in fact. After being possessed by Sebastian Kess, a magically inclined enforcer from the parallel dimension Coursodon, her life took a decidedly less mundane turn. Besides coming to grips with the existence of supernatural beings, she risked her life helping Sebastian and her heart falling for his protégé, Alex Sunderland. Now, Hailey has to deal with the bit of arcane power that Sebastian left behind when he returned to his own body and try to stay out of the crossfire when an unknown assailant seeks revenge against Alex.

My Review

I approached this book with caution. I adored Special Offers and didn’t want my balloon to be burst by setting my expectations too high.

My balloon is intact and flying high! I had just as much fun with Special Rewards as I did with the first book.

Now that Sebastian is out of Hailey’s body and back in his own. Hailey and Alex are heating up their romance.

But just because she’s rid of Sebastian doesn’t mean he’s not still too close. He’s staying with her and Alex, training her to control her new power.

When Sebastian was expelled from Haileys body, he left a little bit of his Courso power inside her. Now she has to get it under control quickly. Otherwise, anything and anybody could become a pile of ash or blown to smithereens when she loses her temper.

On top of that, the animals of the desert are drawn to Hailey, hanging out beyond her walled property. On any given day there can be tarantulas, hawks, deer, coyotes and many other creatures and they show no interest in each other. They just calmly stand and watch and eventually drift back into the desert.

When someone sets a tree on fire outside their rented ranch, Alex and Hailey are determined to get to the bottom of who did it. Could it be Alex’s mother? She did summon him to visit her by throwing a talisman through their window. Or is it someone else? Do they have an enemy? And who were they after, her or Alex?

And that’s just the beginning.

I’m happy to tell you, this is every bit as good as the first book!

I like that Alex and Hailey are fogging up my Kindle with their steamy romance. Now that they’ve put humpty-dumpty back together again they are busy getting to know each other a whole lot better.

And Sebastian is his usual smug and charming self.

There’s a whole lot of action and we get to go to Coursodon! It’s similar to our dimension in some ways, but quite different in others.

Hailey discovers Alex’s roots and gets quite a surprise. And Sebastian gets in a heap of trouble that requires her help.

With so much to entertain, I flew through this book. I hope the author is a fast writer because I really want more soon.

My Review

After loving the first two books in this series, I was looking forward to reuniting with old friends. When I really get into a story the characters become almost flesh and blood, almost family.

The beginning paragraph is a shock, a jump start to your nervous system. The scene looks like a massacre, with body parts scattered all over the place.

Hailey took this all in from her perch on a tree limb. She was in her avian form as a large brown hawk. Mighty convenient for ‘fly on the wall’ surveillance as a member of the supernatural enforcers team, or Xyzok. Their job is to keep the inter-dimensional bad guys from harming humans.

Yterita, or form bending is one of the residual abilities left behind in Hailey after expelling Sebastian from her body. All Coursos have magical abilites.

The killer’s signature is body parts left like a trail of bread crumbs, but the trail remains a dead end. Hailey and Alex have to track down the illusive Courso who killed the hikers and stop him from killing again.

While on an early evening jog, Hailey is kidnapped by the killer. She’s not a threat to him so she’s in no immediate danger. He wants her to deliver a message to the Courso. If what he reveals is true, then both worlds are in danger.

It’s been fun getting reaquainted with these characters.

Sebastian is still trying to hook up with Hailey’s best friend Rachel. She’s the one for him, if there is such a thing. He is a fan of the female form and quite a womanizer, but he’s curbed his appetite in anticipation of sweeping Rachel off her feet, literally.

Rachel still has so idea about the Courso or Hailey’s hidden abilities. I was curious as to if or when she might learn their secrets.

Then there’s the matter of Hailey’s peculiar sense of smell. I wondered where that might come into play as the author kept reminding me of it in interesting tidbits.

Another thing I liked were the animals. Vinnie, Haileys cat is your typical cat. Deigns you with his presence when he feels like it.

And now, Hailey has brought home a stray. A large dog of questionable breed that needed a home. The fun part was reading to see what she would name him. She had many temporary names such as Curly Dog, Putrid Pup(he was in need of a bath),Big Brownie, Feed-Lot-Fido, and finally Rufus. Not sure if that will stick as she says she’s just trying it out.

Everyone stayed in character and the scenes, whether humorous, steamy, or mysterious, were never boring, always enticing me to read further. And the dialogue was so well written I found myself wanting to join in and add my two cents worth.

Another hit from M.L. Ryan and a big thank you for a job so well done!

A brief scene I liked:

…I was damn lucky to have Alex in my life. You gotta love a guy who knew when to shut up. That, and the view of his well-toned ass as he made his exit made me downright giddy.

~~~~~~
BLURB:
The weirdness continues….
Thanks to a magical transplant from an inter-dimensional enforcer, Hailey Parrish can transform into a hawk. When someone begins dismembering hikers along the Appalachian Trail, the enforcers make use of her feathery talents to pursue the killer. Unfortunately, like most things in Hailey’s life, there is nothing ordinary about the assignment. Their target turns out to be maddeningly elusive, they rescue a stray dog that makes a sewage treatment plant seem pleasantly fragrant, and stopping the murders turns out to be the least of their worries.
Special Attraction, the third book in the Coursodon Dimension series, combines paranormal romance, urban fantasy, a bit of science fiction and a healthy dose of quirky humor.
Excerpt
“Where was the latest victim found?” Alex inquired as we moved to where we could see what was so engrossing in front of them. A close-up photo of a man’s severed head filled the screen. It looked like a beige scarf was wrapped around what remained of his neck, and his eyes were open wide, as if he couldn’t quite believe he was about to die.
Sebastian answered, “Near Ketchum, Idaho,” and tapped the touch pad to display the next image. A wider shot appeared, and I realized what I thought was a scarf was actually flesh. The decapitated body was propped into a sitting position against a tree trunk, its head cradled in its arm sort of like a football. Something seemed off, though. Well, more so than a murdered guy posed, holding his own head. I examined the image for a while until I realized what was wrong. The skin tone of the head was about three shades lighter than the arm’s.
“Why doesn’t the skin color match?” I asked, pointing to the various body parts in question.
Tapping to reveal another photo, Sebastian didn’t need to respond. There was another body, a few feet away from the first, posed in the same macabre fashion, but with a dark-skinned face and lighter arms.
“That’s sick,” I said, wincing.
Karttyx turned slightly and looked at me. “Yes, but that’s not the worst of it.”
I was about to ask, “What could be worse?” when I noticed the second man had something balanced where his head should have been. I leaned closer to the image and could just make out some lettering on what appeared to be a horizontally folded card. Sebastian zoomed in so I could see the fancy, scrawling script. It read, For you, Hailey.
My Review
Brett’s paranormal investigations are at a stand still, so he’s up for it when Uncle Gonzo invites him and his friend Jimbo, and ex-girlfriend Liz on a road trip, destination New Orleans.
Things get interesting right from the get go. The trip almost ends before it gets down the road, when they swerve to avoid a figure that appears out of the fog. Turns out it was a ghost.
But a ghost is the least of their worries, as a raging demon who hops from body to body and can sap their life force with a touch pursues them.
This road trip is anything but normal and they’ll be lucky to reach their destination.
This is one crazy road trip. Brett and Liz are working on renewing their relationship, Jimbo is harassed with phone calls from his insecure, jealous girlfriend Frannie, and Uncle Gonzo(not really anyone’s uncle) is always there to stir the pot, sarcastic with a capital S.
Where the author really got me was why, if Jimbo’s girlfriend may be the one who sicced the demon on them, was Brett the target? I kept searching for subtle clues, something to point me in another direction.
Then I got caught up in the dialogue, the witty repartee, and the pit stops they made along the way.
Even if a demon’s after you, you still have to take a bathroom break and eat. But thinking it won’t attack when others are around is a dangerous mistake for Brett and the poor guy barely escapes it clutches.
I think Gonzo’s van, Soccer Mom, was the perfect vehicle to carry us down this winding road. The weird gets weirder, the demon gets angrier, and the gang gets more desperate. This is where you fasten your seat belts and hold on to your butts. The path is filled with potholes.
My Review
It’s been months since Brett moved to be with Liz and still no work. Not much call for paranormal investigators at the moment.
When Liz and Brett hear of a creature, maybe a chupacabra, being seen in  the woods, they pack up their camera and camping gear and set off to see what’s really out there.
Who should show up but Larry, Liz’s cyber-stalking ex- boyfriend. When they manage to get photos of the creature, Larry steals the camera. Liz isn’t worried though, she has the sim card.
SinkingDown_FinalInterior 1
It turns out it’s not a chupacabra. It looks like a gray-skinned little girl with weird yellow eyes. She stinks of death and munches on road kill.
Of course, Liz gains it trust and brings it home. After a hot bath and plenty of scrubbing, a little girl emerges. She’s still grey-skinned and unbreathing, but she smells a whole lot better.
Now Liz is determined to find out who Ashleigh (the name she gave the creature) is, why she’s a ghoul, and how to undo it. And once again things point to Brett.
SinkingDown_FinalInterior 2
It’s time for another road trip and the gangs all here.
As the book description tells you, there’s a whole lot of other things happening in this second book.
The gathering of ghost hunters was fun to read. All sorts of weird.
And Uncle Gonzo is good for mixing it up and providing the next day hangovers.
But my favorite part was the little ghoul, Ashleigh. She didn’t ask for what happened to her. And Liz was awesome to take her in. I don’t know if I could have. The author’s description made me feel sorry for her, but Ashleigh also creeped me out. Then, as surely as a hot bath washed away the stink and filth, that little ghoul stole my heart.
I’d do whatever needed doing to help her and that’s what this story is about.
Hop in Soccer Mom (Gonzo’s van) and join the gang on their latest road trip. The supernatural is happening and danger is just around the bend.
Synopsis
Poor Little Ghoul
Paranormal investigators Brett and Liz find themselves back in over their heads when a forest hunt for a roadkill-eating creature offers up a little surprise. Back home with their ghoulish house guest, it becomes clear there’s more to this investigation than either of them thought. Worse than that, Brett’s own fate is linked to the little ghoul’s.
So it’s back out on the road, with plenty of time for pit stops with a greedy ex, a convention of ghost hunters, partying with fake vampires, and even drinking and fighting alongside good ole Uncle Gonzo. But as the investigation goes deeper, and unseen connections come to light, Brett finds there’s much more at stake than getting through a rough patch with Liz.
A rescue mission. A race for a cure. New friends and old adversaries. Unbreakable bonds and supernatural danger. It’s going to be a wild ride. Can the friends save the nearly undead tween? Can she and Brett stop themselves from …Sinking Down?
My Review
 I had a review all written, but as I was rereading it, I kept changing things and I finally just threw it out and started over. It was too serious for such an exciting and fun story.
Chloe’s near death and seven month coma have left her with the ability to hear and see animals thoughts. She uses this to her advantage working at the Plum Beach Wildlife Park and her ability is often sought.
A new veterinarian, Zane, comes along and her vows of celibacy are in danger. This aplha male calls out to her inner self, jumbling her thoughts and weakening her resolve. She’s angered, afraid, and electrified by him all at the same time, which leads to some fun sparks between these two.
There’s a serious part. Young men are being murdered. First, there’s two. Then a third. And a fourth, and the last two Chloe knew.
There’s a dark side. Who’s killing these young men? The vamps, fae, or evil werewolves? All seem to have their own agendas and all are suspect.
Then there’s the fun, exciting part. The romantic sparks between Chloe and Zane. Chloe’s ability to read minds was limited to just animals. As she honed her skills, she wondered if she’d eventually be able to do the same with humans. She found she could capture Zane’s thoughts,with good reason, and cheated to use this to her advantage. The dialogue between these two kept me smiling as they sparred and came together. They go together like butter and popcorn. Not complete without the other.
And we can’t forget the villains. There’s a mysterious figure that attacks a zebra, sucking it’s blood. Hmm.. And the mutants, werewolves that are turned not born one. I wouldn’t recommend trying to pet one. And then there’s Jazmine. Cold as ice and sharpening her claws. She’s not liking Chloe and Zane’s budding romance at all. He’s supposed to be her mate.
I enjoy a good mystery and romance. Add in the supernatural elements and I’m wanting to cheat, skip ahead to see if what I wanted to happen did and who the killer was. But I didn’t. And the wait was worth it.
My Review
Warning –  This is the second book in The Werewolves of the West Series and I’ll do my best not to include spoilers.
I felt the author really hit her stride right out of the gate in this second book. The action and suspense are palpable right from the first chapter and the romance is a tangled web, with many want to be suitors for Melanie and the newly mated bonds between Chloe and Zane.
I just knew Jazmine and that zebra feasting vamp would get at Chloe. She’s behind bars, framed for multiple murders and Agent Green has nullified her abilities, cutting her off from all who would help her.
War, jealousy, and love all rear their heads in this fun continuation of the series.
When Chloe and Zane were mated she gained a lot of special talents and seemed to have an intuitive sense on how to tap into them. Carol did a great job with this, making Chloe’s easy assimilation believable.
As with the first book, there is so much intrigue and secrets it becomes difficult to tell the good guys from the bad ones. Even some of the bad guys earned my affection. What can I say, they are supernatural and sexy.
Chloe’s best friend Melanie tells her own side of things. She has a secret. She’s jealous of Chloe. Her best friend has attitude and glamour and she often feels like the ugly duckling compared to her.
That all changes when she arrives in Plum Beach to help get Chloe out of jail. The paranormal books she writes earn her six figures a year, and it may be why she was able to accept the news when she finds out most of the people helping Chloe are werewolves, fae, and vamps.
She’s not lacking in suitors either with all these alpha males sniffing at her door, and she feels sexy, lovin every minute of it.
There’s plenty of action, sizzling sex appeal, and so many secrets to be kept and surprises to be revealed. We lost some characters but gained some new ones and this series just got even better.
About the Author:
Carol Van Atta
Like most authors, Carol Van Atta is no stranger to the written word. She penned a short novel at age 12 (somewhat frightening illustrations included, and lots of bunnies were involved), and had a creative writing piece published in her high school newspaper (about David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs LP). Yes, she’s an ex-80’s chick.
Devouring books from numerous genres, Carol developed a deep thirst/hunger for more reading material, and could almost always be found with her nose in a book.
She has contributed to several popular inspirational anthologies and devotional books, and lives in the rainy wetland of Oregon with a terrifying teen (another in college) and a small zoo of animals. She is taking an undetermined hiatus away from inspirational writing to delve into her darker side. (Though you can check out her latest spiritual suspense novel, Soul Defenders). It is rumored that this genre-jumping occurred after Carol discovered too suspicious red marks on her neck, and experienced an unquenchable urge to howl at the moon.
Welcome to my Monday Minis.
This is where I review short stories and flash fiction.
For today I’ll be telling you about Devil Inside
by William Cook
My Review
This is a very short story that will thrill you and chill you.
You’ll think you know what’s going on, then doubt yourself, then think you know again.
A teenage boy endures the abuse heaped on him by his drunken father while his equally befogged mother remains indifferent.
The monster under his bed emerges, terrifying the boy and empowering him at the same time.
 Is it after him? What does it want?
While I kind of knew what was coming at the end, I had a gruesome, scary time getting there. As a short read, I enjoyed the sampling of this authors writing and will be interested to read further stories.
The four poems included with this story are moody and brooding. I don’t profess to have a deep understanding of poetry, but I enjoyed them. And the glimpse inside the author’s novel, Blood Related, is promising.
