A compelling saga
of love, duty, and sacrifice set against the stunning backdrop of a
lush tropical island—where the line between hero and villain blurs
in the shadows of a forgotten world…

.

In a land
ravaged by ancient vendettas, nineteen-year-old Eva has vowed to
protect Zoleya, a petite, blue-eyed girl with a powerful gift. But
when a catastrophic shipwreck strands her on a mysterious tropical
island and Zoleya disappears, Eva is forced to abandon her duty and
form alliances with a group of castaways to survive. While facing the
island’s perils and a corrupt band of Raiders intent on her
capture, Eva fights to reclaim her title as Zoleya’s
Guardian.

.

Kade Thorn, a hunter programmed to seek and
destroy all remnants of forbidden technology, battles his opposing
impulses. Bound by ancient markings etched into his skin that incite
violence, he finds himself torn between blindly obeying his directive
or pursuing a powerful attraction to Eva, knowing either choice will
get him killed.

.

Forced to rely on each other, Eva and Kade
seek refuge deep within the island’s jungle and become conflicted
about where their loyalties lie. Will they find their way back to
their predetermined paths or forge a new destiny together? The fate
of Zoleya—the catalyst to either save the world or destroy it—hangs
in the balance.

I had no idea how many days had passed when the ship began losing battle with a raging storm. All of us being held captive by the Raiders had gone through hell and back already, so this was an additional layer of torture. We were all hurting and scared to bits, yet the sea couldn’t care less—it was going to drown us one way or another.

And maybe that was a blessing.

As I watched Zoleya from across the cage, water began dripping down from the oily planks overhead and between the unbreakable iron bars. We were in the belly of the ship, the women cowering in the corner either praying or crying, and the men moaning in agony and fear. I was helpless to do anything, only able to watch dried blood turn to tiny red rivers on Zoleya’s skin as she became soaked to the bone. Our journey across Aldira had been hellacious, to say the least, but being responsible for the state she was in felt worse than a million knives slicing up my heart. I was supposed to protect her, and I had failed.

“We’ll be okay,” said a doe-eyed woman with arms and legs thin as toothpicks. All her front teeth were broken, making her hard to understand. “The storm will pass soon.”

Normally I’d respect someone who was just trying to be comforting, but that was a bald-faced lie.

One of the men chained up across from me snorted in disgust. “Delusional,” he said and spat, adding to the slimy water lapping at our toes.

We could all hear the Raiders up on deck losing battle with the violent weather and churning seas, panic thick in their voices as they yelled “Secure the lashings” and “Man overboard.”

As water inched past our ankles and up our calves, Zoleya’s gaze met mine. The light from the quivering lanterns danced in her irises. She was so pale. The sky-blue sundress she favored torn and splattered with filth. Her long white hair hung loose down to her hips, clinging to her petite frame—I hadn’t had a chance to braid it for the day before we’d been captured.

“Calla is correct,” she said, agreeing simply to provide an extra ray of hope. But Zo was bad at lying. Her lip always quivered. “Things will be just fine. Our journey will come to an end soon,” she added.

Well, that was at least true. Soon we’d all be dead.

“If you mean that we’re going to drown, then so be it,” a giant of a man with sores all over his face practically growled at her. “I’d rather die at sea than on Cal de Mac. Drowning would be better than what the Raiders will put us through if we make it to their homeland.”

He was right. The women would be sold as slaves, and the men and I, with our wrists chained over our heads and ankles shackled together, would be forced to fight in the arenas until our last breath. Being captured by these thieves of the land and pirates of the sea was a certain death sentence, and I saw no way out.

The wind howled like a million wounded Black-Blooded, shrill and curling up tight to my eardrums. As the ship seemed to break apart, I thought of Mom, of Delia, and of Father, their graves dug deep in the toxic Aldiran dirt. Then I prayed to a god who never had a moment to spare for me, begging her to magically transport me back to the cabin with the little woodstove and bury my body next to theirs.

Those who were not chained up in the cage toppled into each other as the ship crested a wave before dipping sharply downward and then leveling out. Lightning crackled through the sky. Someone let out a heart-wrenching wail… I couldn’t just hang here like a carcass waiting to be gutted, I had to try to do something. Anything.

Tugging on my restraints caused the shackles to dig deep into my wrists. A sickly warmth trickled down my arms. I nearly passed out from the pain, but I kept tugging; at least I would die with honor trying to save Zoleya.

“They can’t be barbaric enough to leave us down here to drown,” said a woman with a small child clinging to her legs.

A man across from me with black greasy curls let out a pained laugh. “Oh, but they are.” His voice was raw with hatred and his face was bruised, one eye nearly swollen shut. “Raiders are no better than the maggots swimming in your dinner.”

Crates full of stolen food, weapons, silks, and spices slammed into each other, releasing a plume of crushed cloves into the dank air. Someone up on deck shrieked and the wind shrieked back. I wondered if we had minutes. Seconds even. If I had to rip my hands off I would.

“Eva. Stop that, please,” Zoleya pleaded.

If I could only break some bones then maybe—

“Aye, stop for heaven’s sake!” said a massive man directly across from me with hair as red as the blood leaking from his broken nose. His skin was black with filth. His clothes were rags. “It’s bad enough we be trapped in here together. Watching ye torture yourself is making it worse. Besides, even if ye git free, there ain’t nothing a wee missy such as yourself can do. You be just a girl.”

My pulse throbbed at my temples; how many times had I heard that before? “Don’t you think there’s a reason I’m chained up like the rest of you?”

The redhead had some sort of answer perched on the tip of his tongue, but the sea spoke first. With another shriek, it dragged its salty claws along the sides of the ship, grabbed hold, and wrenched it to the left. A barrel tipped over, mixing brine and writhing squid into the rising water. More clearly than ever, we could hear the frantic voices of the crew dancing with death above while we waited for it below.

 I am Canadian, born and raised in Alberta on a lovely acreage just
outside of Edmonton to musical parents. I began my arts career as a
musician, leaving home at the age of fifteen to play in a rock band,
then went on to become a singer/songwriter. I wrote songs and told
stories with melodies, lucky enough to tour Canada and record four
studio albums, as well as work as a studio musician. I spent years
singing my heart out. However, when I discovered the limitless
creativity of novel writing, I shifted my focus to a literary career.
My extraordinary experiences as a musician continue to fuel my
writing. I am deeply inspired by art and profoundly humbled by the
creativity of others. Creating is a fundamental part of my life, and
expressing myself through storytelling is incredibly important to me.
I strive to transport readers to different places or provide them
with a companion for three hundred pages, impacting them as my
favorite writers and artists have impacted me.

.

I like to write
about deeply flawed characters with relatable struggles and how they
react in extraordinary circumstances. The Rocky Mountains and the
wonders of nature greatly inspire me, and I love to explore the
juxtaposition of these settings with urban landscapes. My novels are
characterized by action, adventure, lots of romance, and unexpected
twists. I like to put my characters in unique settings and fully
explore their motivations while drawing heavily on my personal
experiences.

.

I am honored to be
represented by Elizabeth Winick Rubinstein of McIntosh and Otis, one
of the USA’s longest-running literary agencies, representing
remarkable authors such as the late John Steinbeck and Harper Lee. As
a ‘hybrid’ author, Elizabeth represents my adult works, while I
represent my young adult works. I am determined not to limit myself
to one specific genre and hope to follow in the footsteps of authors
who have achieved success this way, as I value the artistic freedom
it affords.

.

At present, I have
four published novels; Serenade, Nocturne and Rhapsody, all which
have achieved bestseller status in digital sales. My newest novel,
Atomica: Between Sea and Sky, was just released on August 27, 2024,
and is the first book in a new young adult fantasy series.

The Kingdom of Shadows and Wolves

by Martha Sweeney

(Stardust & Shadows, #1)
Publication date: August 27th 2024
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance

Being raised by the viper who slaughtered my family, along with being beaten and berated by him for merely existing, takes a toll on my heart and soul. Uncle bears the crown, has changed the name of our kingdom Soare to Krigare, and desires more destruction throughout the Fae lands. While plotting his quest to rule all, I’m bartered to forge a union with Cysgod, a formidable ally and one who could ensure Uncle’s victory. King Caelum of Cysgod has a reputation that precedes him, defining him as a tyrant as well. He killed his father for the crown and is known to be just a ruthless and bloodthirsty as Uncle.

Just when I thought the Gods had forsaken me, as they did the Enkeli and Conroicht, my life turns upside down. While I fear my new king, he and his people see me as their queen. Though he does not punish me, I expect it nonetheless and flinch at his touch.

I may be rid of Uncle, but I doubt his hold on me is truly released. Does he plan to capture Cysgod from the inside, using me as his weapon, giving him the army he needs to take and conquer any kingdom? Is there a way to stop Uncle and seek revenge for the death of my kin?

Goodreads / Amazon

~~~~~
Enjoy this peek inside:
Your name does not fit you, my soon-to-be King,” I state. “Your father surely didn’t expect his son who is named of the heavens, where our beloved Gods reside, to take his crown by force. Did you go rabid like the Conroicht? Perhaps he should have named you—”
His grip tightens around my fingers and I’m forced to stop speaking and walking when he does. I dare not look at him, knowing I have spoken out of turn.
There isn’t a sound other than his controlled breath in and out of his nostrils.
“I have heard the rumors, King Caelum.” My stare pierces the floor. “I know a wolf in a sheep’s hide even if that wolf is a kingdom away.”
“One would almost say the same of your beloved Uncle,” he jabs.
I snicker. “Beloved is a word that has never been used to describe him.”
A hand wraps around my throat and I’m pushed against the stone wall. “You know little of me, Princess Aurora. Mind your words or I will seek pleasure in punishing you.”
My chin raises. “You know little of me.”
King Caelum’s attention lowers from my face. My dagger, which was hidden against my thigh, is pressed against the bottom of his leather chest guard. A low chuckle reverberates from him.
“With the tip of my hand like so,” I state, lowering my wrist an inch. “I merely need to press up and I will wound you greatly.”
“Princess Aurora,” Kion chides, stepping closer.
King Caelum growls at the guard who backs down a second later. “I know more about you, my soon-to-be Queen of Cysgod than you realize.”
“Not enough to know that I was armed and—”
He snarls like the wolf he is which cuts me off. “Three punishments so far, Princess Aurora. The odds gain in my favor.”
“Three?” I scoff.
The fire in his eyes intensifies. “First, for calling me a coward. Second, for calling me a wolf. And now, the attempt on my life.”
“Your life?” I balk. “You and your guards outnumber me. If you wanted, I would be dead and my blade wouldn’t be where it is.”
“Precisely.” His grip tightens around my neck, his thumb pressing into the bottom of my chin. “You pose no threat to me.”
“That is what Uncle would wish you to believe,” I inform. “Who was kneeling to whom earlier today? Not one Krigare guard rose when either of us stood, not that they have ever risen for me other than to escort me somewhere.” A yelp rushes out of me when my weapon-wielding hand is pinned against the wall. My gaze darts to its proximity and I swallow the lump in my throat when I realize its tip is a mere inch from my eye.
A devious smirk tugs at his lips as King Caelum chuckles deeply. “I’ll very much enjoy the punishments you will receive from me when we are afforded the time.”
Indignantly, I reply, “I’m certain it won’t be worse than what Uncle has done to me.”
King Caelum releases me, returning my dagger to the inside of my left thigh. I’m speechless as his fingers graze my skin and linger longer than needed. Should he lift his fingers barely an inch, he will touch a place no Fae male has ever touched. “We shall see, Princess Aurora.”
A voice cried out for his warriors to be silent, and that was when I noticed the man on the horse was the same one who pleaded for his life in front of me moments ago. He rode out several paces into the battlefield.
“Intruder….” he cried out. “Won’t you give me the same courtesy I have given you? Meet me in the middle of the battlefield to discuss your surrender. A woman is not fit to fight in a war.” Phoenix said.
“I will not surrender to you… or any other human.” I spat.
I scanned the lines of his army. Only men were amongst them, not a single woman was there on the battlefield. I never understood why their kind treated women differently like they were lesser than men. A slight growl escaped my lips.
“Such a pity, wasting a great-looking specimen like yourself on something as ugly as death.” Phoenix paused. “No matter… I would have killed you myself had you surrendered. I do not pity your kind.”
“That’s funny. That’s not what Jericho would have said,” I countered.
“Soldiers! Take arms.” He cried out. He unsheathed his sword and raised it to the sky. With a kick to his horse, Phoenix headed to the end of his army’s line and clashed his sword against their spears.
The Hunters dropped their shields to form a shield wall for the ones who carried spears and swords. I saw the archers lined up behind the weapon holders as they drew their bows and awaited the final command for the battle to begin.
I turned my head towards my people and nodded, then averted my gaze back towards the enemy. My soldiers began to take their armor off. This caused a stir amongst his men. I could hear laughing from the other side, with shouts of “What is she thinking?” “if she wants an easy battle, so be it.” They had no idea what was in store for them. They didn’t know it was hard to shift in armor. Clothes we could easily destroy, but metal hindered our shift.
“Start the march slowly, and once you hear my call, shift.” I prompted.
I looked down at Ahar, right into his smoky gray eyes, and nodded my approval to begin the battle. My front line bent down in a slow arch in what looked like a sprinter’s starting position. There wasn’t fear on their faces; their lips curled in disgust as they snarled and snapped in their human forms, and their wolf spirits were ready to let loose.
Ahar began a battle cry that rattled the Earth. It made my heart swell with pride, knowing I had him and others like him who wouldn’t question me. In unison, my front line started to trot towards the onslaught that was about to begin. The Hunters tightened their lines, with their shields up and spears out. Archers were still at the ready.
I closed my eyes and looked to find the heated core within me. A slight burning sensation spread to my toes. I smiled; I knew what was about to happen next.
With my eyes still closed, I could feel the freezing air trying to prick at my body. Nothing could stop what would happen next as I found this burning desire within my soul to find my other half. My snow-white wolf looked at me with bliss on her face. She had waited for me to finally release her. She was ready. I caressed her muzzle, and it began. My body was set ablaze, with a fire that burned every inch of me. But this time, I let every inch slowly give in to my indomitable wolf.
I looked out with my wolf sight and saw my front line start their advance faster. With everybody’s eyes on me, I opened my mouth and howled so deafeningly that the enemy dropped most of their formation, along with their weapons, to cover their ears.
With the archers disarmed, my front line shifted, one after the other, into a multitude of colored wolves and struck the enemy line with full force.
“What do you think, Mortar? Pestle?” Hyde finished adjusting their button-down collar out of the blue sweater and glanced at the two cats observing them. One meowed quite loudly while the other sniffed before licking a paw. “You’re both remarkably unhelpful.”
The outfit of the day was one of their favourites. A lovely blue sweater with a well-worn button-down underneath. Jeans. A little boyish style from yesteryear with their trousers tucked into their socks and a vintage pair of brown boots.
I am a chubby ginger icon. I can seize the day.
Or I can seize a book to read.
That sounds better.
I’ll seize a book.
A particularly loud yowl caught their attention. The cats were definitely ready for their breakfast. They both looked pitifully up at Hyde.
“All right. Come on, you two.”
Mortar was a stunningly beautiful Persian with startling blue eyes who’d definitely been a queen in a previous life. Pestle, on the other hand, had probably been a court jester. His long ginger fur and almost glowing yellow eyes certainly set him apart, as did his sense of mischief.
They were Hyde’s constant companions. They ruled the roost. And more often than not, they kept the right people in the shop and the rest from overstaying their welcome.
Between the Leaves had been Hyde’s passion project for almost eighty years. The building had been a gift from the woman who’d taken them in as a child. A little shop with a comfortable flat on the second floor, it had once been a place serving afternoon tea, but books had been more interesting to Hyde.
Returning to stare at the mirror, Hyde attempted to corral their short, curly red hair into some semblance of a style. It was going to be a hat day. A hat day. It was a mostly nonverbal day. And a they day.
Being a vampire had its perks; being almost a hundred yet having stopped ageing at thirty was certainly a plus. Being an autistic one, though, had drawbacks. Every sound and smell was amplified by what felt like a thousand. The world could be an incredibly overwhelming place. It was Flossie who’d come up with the idea for the signs.
Flossie Vandermark was one of the three witches who ran The Spiked Cauldron, the village pub. She also happened to be a proud member of the Skeleton Crew, a weekly knitting group who met up at Hyde’s bookshop. Flossie had suggested a sign for days when Hyde didn’t want to talk or when they felt more they than she.
It made Hyde feel accepted. Everyone wanted to do what made them comfortable. It was part of the magic of their village.
Acceptance.
Everyone knew about South Myrddin. The little village on a loch in the Scottish Highlands was founded by Merlin himself, or so the lore went. It had a reputation for taking in the abandoned.
Hyde had come as a child when their family vampire coven had rejected them. South Myrddin was the place for stragglers, odd ones, and outliers. A place to find family if one wanted.
A place to find home.
The village had a healthy coven of witches. A few vampires. The odd werewolf. A collection of naiads, dryads, and brownies. Druids and shifters. A stray kelpie. An incubus and succubus, who were Italians who ran a restaurant. And one lone fae who’d been in South Myrddin since the beginning, or so they claimed.
The eclectic bunch of magical beings had all made South Myrddin their home. Most of the villagers came searching for a place to feel comfortable in their own skin. Hyde considered themselves grateful to have been left there all those years ago.
.
.
Dahlia Donovan wrote her first romance series after a crazy dream about
shifters and damsels in distress. She prefers irreverent humour and
unconventional characters. An autistic and occasional hermit, her
life wouldn’t be complete without her husband and her massive
collection of books and video games.
What I Love Most In A Cowboy Romance by Karen Baney
Horses. Horse scenes. I mean, what is the cowboy without his horse?
In each of the books in the Vargas Ranch Series, I’ve included a horse-riding scene. Sometimes it is a central or pivotal part of the plot. Other times it’s a chance to draw the two main characters together.
In Book 1, Falling for a Real Cowboy, the horse-riding scene spans several chapters, starting with grooming the horses. Even though River knew how to ride horses, she had never groomed one, which provided a perfect opportunity for some zinging (clean) attraction between her and Dalton Vargas. Then the horse-ride and picnic added critical drama to the romantic arc of the book.
In Book 2, Falling for a Shy Cowboy, Dylan Vargas manages the stables, so there are many horse related scenes. While he asked Brisa on a horse ride, circumstances delay it. The first time we see her on a horse is when she searches for him after he’s been missing for hours, heightening the tension in the story. When they finally experience their peaceful horse ride together, it’s part of their happily ever after.
In Book 3, Falling for a Bossy Cowboy, Derin Vargas shows up at Madison’s casita with a saddled horse for the horse ride he never told her about. The scene provided a great opportunity to emphasize the boss and sass dynamic between them, settling into a pleasant get-to-know-you conversation.
Well, of course when it comes to Book 4, I needed a horse-riding scene. In Falling for a Smart Cowboy, Devon Vargas runs the children’s center at the resort part of the ranch. Growing up on the ranch, he enjoyed gathering his thoughts as he rode his horse. But how could I create the perfect moment for him and Raina? Easy. She asked him to teach her how to ride horses. A little (clean) zinging attraction from the close proximity. A few errant thoughts on his part. And viola! A lovely horse scene for the romantic tension in the story.
It’s a lot of fun coming up with different ways to throw my fictional couples together in a horse scene. Wonder what I’ll come up with next?
Excerpt from Chapter 2:
The sasquatch kept his promise, and he returned as the sun began to cast tall shadows over the city. “Good evening, ladies. Please call me Renault, I’m the King’s personal attendant.” His bushy eyebrows arched over his amber eyes as he spoke. He was much less menacing without his mysterious air. However, he still stood at least two feet taller than us, his fur a chestnut brown that covered his head and neck dipping below his shirt. “Follow me. The king is eager to meet with you.”
“My business partner, Cassie, is coming along as well. Will that be okay with you and the king?”
He nodded his head and took off down the street. I squared my shoulders and lifted my chin, trying to boost my confidence as it wavered. Cassie slipped her hand into mine and we followed.
I was Kate Halloway, potion master and entrepreneur. I could handle one Sasquatch king. Couldn’t I?
Renault guided us through a magical labyrinth of secret passageways and alleys, turning in impossible ways. The buildings around us shifted into fantastical shapes, as if enchanted by an unseen force. Cassie gasped behind me. It was clear she was equally as shocked, but from the smile on her face, I knew she was enjoying every moment, as was I.
After padding through a narrowing dark tunnel, we emerged into the Arcane Forest illuminated by the moon’s soft glow. It was much later in the woods than it was in Denny Bay. Some sort of shift in time, which didn’t surprise me I’ve read of such differences in the witch handbook outlining the realms.
Cassie’s eyes were wide with excitement. “Wow. This is really something.” She said while taking in our surroundings. Trees as tall as twenty-story buildings were woven with vines, olive-colored moss and limbs which sagged with white flowers that made the tree appear like it was wearing a skirt. The castle itself resembled an old, Victorian-style home we were used to seeing near along the coast. But this one was enormous. Each window was black-rimmed, with light flickering behind the panes. It would be a bit eerie if I stumbled upon this location alone, but instead I found it beautiful.
Our path led us to a set of steep granite stairs. We followed Renault as his boots clapped against the steps. As we approached the entrance, a set of tall, heavy-looking doors swung open on their own, enticing us to enter.
Renault gallantly bowed his head, extending his hand to lead us through the palace’s threshold, with a courteous invitation of, “After you, ladies.”
The grand entrance was furnished with shimmering crystals that refracted the moonlight, casting a rainbow of colors across the smooth surfaces of the room. Renault led us down a hallway to a room where the king sat, his silver crown glistening as he raised a hand in greeting.
Cassie gulped as she took in the room, her eyes landing on the king. “Wow,” she whispered. For the first time since I’d known Cassie, I would say the sight of the king had her momentarily speechless.
Chapter 1
Kate
Adulting… the bane of my existence. I didn’t imagine myself saddled with so much financial responsibility before thirty. I pondered my current situation while seated at the small desk in the back of the Potion Palace, my grandmother’s shop, surrounded by stacks of bills and a calculator perched precariously atop them. This was my least favorite part of running a business—the constant battle of making ends meet and trying to stay afloat. I vowed when I inherited this business, I’d do everything in my power to make it succeed.
I groaned into my lukewarm tea as the bell above the door jangled, making me jump. Looking up from the ledger where I keep all my expenses, I watched Cassie burst into the shop with far too much energy for this early in the morning. Waving my fingers above my cup, I chanted a warming spell to add some oomph to my morning pick-me-up.
Dust swirled in the air behind Cassie’s hurried movements. Her dark hair was pulled back in a hasty ponytail, strands escaping to frame her face. “You didn’t call me on the way into work this morning. What’s wrong?”
I watched in awe as Cassie pinned me with an intense stare, all while pulling the dusting cloth from under the register and wiping down the ancient bottles that lined the shelves. Cobwebs stuck to her cloth, but she kept moving. Cassie was a hurricane, an unstoppable force, especially when she fretted over things, which was often.
“Cassie, what are you doing?” I asked, taking another sip of my morning tea.
“Inventory,” she answered without pausing, her tone clipped. Another bottle, another swipe of the cloth. Her movements were mechanical, almost robotic. “If you’re mad at me, just tell me, Kate.”
I stepped around the corner and placed my hand on her shoulder. “Cassie, I’m not mad at you. I’m also not giving you the silent treatment,” I smirked, trying to hide my grin. “I’m conflicted.”
“Conflicted about what? I know when you are off, and it’s obvious.” Her blue eyes scanned the room like she was looking for a clue.
“Cass,” I finally said, trying to force a smile. “Business has been slow, as you know. The reason I didn’t call this morning is because I was occupied with the bank. I currently owe them two months’ rent.”
Cassie raised an eyebrow as she leaned against the counter, her posture relaxing but her gaze sharp. “It’s the weather. Spring in this area is drab at best. Who would want to shop?” Cassie continued to ramble on. “Summer is our busy season. We should prepare for that.”
I smiled, appreciating Cassie’s interpretation of the situation. But even her attempt at explaining away the lack of business fell flat as she resumed dusting and organizing, moving a jar of eye of newt a fraction to the left.
She wasn’t wrong. This lazy, coastal New England beach town was always busier in the summer and fall. Before long, tourists would come strolling in, talking animatedly about the lighthouse and the delicious lobster rolls they had for lunch. In the meantime, I needed to be patient and find a way to make some money.
MY REVIEW
First things first. I have this thing where I have no compunctions about jumping into a series anywhere. I was a bit worried about it with this book as it’s the tenth in the series. I’m thrilled to say I had no issues about it being so far along. I was immediately captivated by the characters and the plot. Everything flowed so easily.
About the plot. A fake murder mystery event at a castle. How fun. I once did one of these on a ferry boat cruise. Highly recommend you do it if you have the chance. Of course, someone ends up dead, for real. And let the sleuthing begin. It’s not an easy solve. I always love that. And I really enjoyed the characters frustrations and fears as they tried to figure out the who and why while also making sure they aren’t a target for the killer.
This was a straight through read for me and I finished it in a couple of hours. If this book is any indication of the author’s other ones, I can’t wait to read more.
.
.
Interview With Author Annabelle Lewis
.
Tell us about a favorite book when you were a kid
I fell in love with books early. Fairy tales, picture books, comic books—Peanuts, I devoured what I could at home until I was old enough to pedal my bike alone to the library. There I spent hours roaming the stacks, amazed by every single volume and frustrated with giddy anticipation that there were so many worlds to explore and choices to be made. But the real favorite and love of my life came when I found the Chronicles of Narnia. I was never the same after entering that world and from that point on was reading whenever I found a moment to spare. Annabelle Lewis is a pen name and Lewis—is a humble hat tip to the great man who wrote the Narnian world – C.S. Lewis.
What is the last great book you’ve read?
I don’t know that it’s the greatest book in the traditional sense of what might qualify for that title, but I actually fell on the floor laughing while reading the book FU Penguin. Since it almost made me pee in my pants, I think that qualifies the book as something particularly special. The book is a farce – a collection of raging rants or blogs from a hysterically funny man named Matthew Gasteier who for no reason takes on cuddly pictures of animals and rages at them with absurd and foul-mouthed glee. I loved every single page of his absurd and twisted sentiments. Not everyone’s cup of tea to be sure, but damn, it worked for me! Thank you for the belly laughs, Matthew!
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
It’s hard for me to choose, but I wrote a short story called Caliburnus that is very personal to me. It’s not part of a series, just a fictional story based on my journey as a special needs mom. It’s about a mother’s dream and the ache of hope. https://theannabellelewis.com/caliburnus-2/
Regarding time frames, what is your favorite era to work with and why.
My work is contemporary fiction. I’ve placed the story in the “now,” and this definitely has its drawbacks. Even before the work can be published, advancements and the use of technology, slang, trends, and societal developments vex me and my characters. I worry about the work holding up but hope that years from now the storytelling itself will still be enjoyable enough to accept.
Talk about how you outline a book
The process can vary, but I always have a broad outline in my head of what the book is about. It’s the ‘elevator pitch’ I would present if given 10 seconds to explain the synopsis while trapped in an elevator. Then I layer on the story with characters, and timeline, and events. Then I build a storyboard with a short explanation of what happens in each chapter. Often, however, I’m just dying to write the story and begin. Consequently, my characters often totally screw up my outline and I have to follow them where they take me. The story will often change, but the overall idea will not.
How long have you been writing?
In hindsight, I think I have always been writing. It began with journaling, and I often worked out my angst or issues after putting them on paper and looking at them. And I read books, all the time. As many as possible. When I became a mom, I started writing short stories about my children to capture the feel and memory of a moment or event. And my own mom always encouraged me to write a book, telling me over and over “I know you have a book in you.” But I didn’t really try until my children had graduated from high school and the activity level in the house decreased. One day, I drafted the first outline of Charlotte McGee, Book 1 of the Carrows Family Chronicles, and never looked back. I wish I had taken my mom’s advice and begun writing fiction earlier!
Meet Author Annabelle Lewis:
Annabelle Lewis—a pseudonym—is a Minneapolis-based, multi-genre writer, dog lover, incredible mom, and champion of the screwed over. In addition to her touching, yet oddly scathing blog posted on her website, she’s published two exciting fictional series.
The Carrows Family Chronicles are humorous and vengeful caper novels. If you’re interested in a light romp about a family of well-dressed billionaires serving yummy revenge to a string of unsuspecting bad guys who have it coming, look no further.
The second series—The Boston Clairvoyants—is also a set of good versus evil stories. These psychic mystery/thrillers have been edited so they could be read as stand-alones, but as Glinda the Good Witch says – “It’s always best to start at the beginning.” The books have a supernatural hierarchy, a wee bit of romance and mythology, and a solid sense of humor. Lovers of dogs and Dean Koontz fans will adore these books.
Annabelle typically sends out two newsletters a month—so she promises not to annoy her subscribers too much. They typically contain feverish reviews on the latest stuff she is watching or reading, links to book giveaways, contests to win a signed paperback, and book browsing for other author’s work.
Oh, and a warning. Annabelle loves to curse. And there is cursing in her books and her blogs . . . because she’s gotta keep it real.
After years of writing romance under the pen name Blake Allwood, I decided
to pursue my other genre passion, fantasy and science fiction. Adam
J. Ridley is the reality of that pursuit.
My husband of 28 years and I have had an adventurous life. We’ve had many businesses, we’ve
As I’ve grown older, my passions seem to be better reflected in my imagination. Fantasy,
urban fantasy, and science fiction all allow me to escape into
worlds that transcend life. I’ve always been a major lover of
fantasy writing and started reading it at a rather young age.
Genre: New Adult College Romance
.
.
When the freshman party ends, the sophomore hangover hits.
Trinity Tachel has no use for society’s rules. Not after the New Orleans
police failed to investigate the murder of her sex-worker mother. Not
after she was abandoned to the Louisiana foster care system as a
child. And certainly not after fighting through freshman year to
prove herself worthy of a spot at the prestigious Filton University.
.
Trinity is overjoyed when she’s invited to spend the summer in the Los
Angeles mansion of retired porn star Missy Mariola. Escape the daily
struggle to survive as a New Orleans college student? Yes please.
Shock proper society by openly embracing an adult film star? Even
better.
.
But when Trinity returns to New Orleans for her sophomore year, she’s an
unrecognizable version of herself.
Missy Mariola has taken over Trinity’s life. Missy doesn’t want Trinity to
work, makes all the rules-and even chooses Trinity’s housemates.
Trinity finds herself living with people she despises, including a
hot New Orleans cop who has a frustrating habit of showing up during
her worst moments.
Trinity has to decide if she wants to remain the abandoned child of her past
.
.
No, it’s not time yet.”
Trinity batted at the finger incessantly poking her shoulder and pulled a pillow over her head to
block out the blare of the alarm clock. And, for just a moment, she escaped. She slipped back
into a world of sleep so seductive she would have willingly traded her remaining days to let it hold
her for eternity.
But Tali was relentless. She wedged both of her hands under Trinity and rolled her limp body to
the edge of the bed.
“This isn’t New Orleans,” she said. “It’s going to take us two hours just to get to the airport.”
“Then I’m dropping out of school.” Trinity yawned and pulled her pillow tighter over her ears.
“Fuck it,” Tali whispered. “Me too. We’ll stay here and start our own business.”
“Sex shop?” Trinity asked.
“Sex shop.” Tali grabbed Trinity’s hand and held it up in a blind show of unity before dropping it
to the mattress.
They had started the summer in separate rooms, rooms so far apart it felt as if they were still
living in different zip codes—distant and lonely and better at following each other’s lives via
social media than actual human interaction.
And Trinity had missed her. Though they were temporarily residing at the same address, eating the
same food, and driving the same car, she missed the days of living their lives together out of
Tali’s cozy dorm room at Richardson Hall—Tali tangled up in James, Trinity trying to peel
herself off Seth’s sweaty body. Waking up to Tali’s beautiful smile every morning. Hugging her
tight every night. Together in their freshman-year sanctuary, they knew no matter what they had
to face that day, they could come home to their safe space—their stability no outside force could
crack. Apart in Tali’s massive LA home, it felt like their floor had fallen out.
And Tali had missed Trinity too. By June, they had started making excuses to sneak into each
other’s rooms. Trinity’s room was too hot. Tali’s was too cold. Tali’s room was too close to the
noise of the busy city streets. Trinity’s room had sheets that were too fucking expensive to sleep
  1. By July, they had given up the excuses and just moved into the one room. And it felt like a
sleepover that would never end, Trinity’s best friend next to her, passing a bottle of wine back and
forth over stories of their freshman year at Filton University. Their school work, their boys, the
battles they had fought together. Going back to school now felt like tainting the memories they
had already created. It was far better to start over in LA.
The door to their room burst open, and a harsh light from the hallway spilled onto the bed. The
curvy outline of a silk robe and high heels was the only shadow cutting through the glare.
“Did I just hear my girls aren’t leaving me?” a voice cried into the room, startling them both from
their last moments of sleep.
“Jesus, Missy,” Tali said. “Did you just creep outside our room all night? Don’t you ever sleep,
woman?”
“You can call me Mom, Tali. I didn’t shove Trinity out of my vagina, and even she calls me
Mom.”
Tali turned her back to the open door and stole Trinity’s pillow before slamming it down on her
own head.
“You’re grossing everyone out, Missy. Can you at least put more clothes on before you start
talking about your pussy today?”
“Absolutely not. You know how much I hate clothes.” Missy ran across the room and jumped into
bed between the girls, wrapping her arms around their heavy shoulders and pulling them close.
Trinity breathed into Missy’s hair and took in the lingering scent of high-end perfume mixed with
higher-end liquor she had surely been sipping all night in preparation for the morning. She
smelled like home now, fleeting though it might have been.
“Good morning, Mama,” Trinity whispered, smiling into Missy’s neck.
“No, this isn’t a good morning, love.” Missy ran a hand over Trinity’s dark hair and down to her
cheek. “This is the best morning. My girls are staying in LA and opening up . . . what did you
say? A sex shop? My beautiful, genius girls. You can do anything, but you choose to stay here
to get into the family business. We’ll have to get started immediately.”
She pulled her phone out of her robe pocket and started punching out a text to her assistant as
she read aloud.
“Make sure to rush order the molds we had made of my vagina. My girls are dropping out of
school to start a sex shop.”
She finished typing, reached a finger high in the air, and slowly brought it down toward the send
button before Tali grabbed the phone and threw it across the room.
“Fine.” Tali grunted as she dragged her legs to the side of the bed. “We’ll go back to school. But
when we both end up hospitalized from sleep deprivation, you’re the one that’s going to have
to come get us. You.” She pointed a sleepy finger at Missy.
Question: When did you begin writing and what inspires you to continue?
Kay Stephens: I began writing romance in 2015 as a creative outlet during a messy
divorce. And my first book was as ridiculous as the failed marriage—no character
development, no plot line, no underlying message. But it was incredibly fulfilling to
realize I had used my energy to create something rather than devolve into negative
emotions.
My romance writing improved significantly with two other, simultaneous life changes.
Following my divorce, I lived my own romance stories that continue on today with my
current (amazing) husband! However, my boss took the divorce as an opportunity to
both slut shame and sexually harass me, both in the office and in my home. It was life
changing to see how some important people in your life can raise you up and give you
space to become the best version of yourself, while others can work tirelessly to destroy
you. And it was in that life disparity that I found a message that continues to motivate
me—growing through the positive people into your life while combating the destructive
people (and learning to distinguish between the two).
Question: Who would you say is the ideal reader for Daughter of the Lost?
Stephens: The ideal reader loves love, has faced bullying, and finds strength reading
about how other people have combated bullying. They not only accept others’
differences, they accept and embrace their own differences too.
Question: How do you respond to the negative stigmas associated with reading
romance (shame, embarrassment, guilt…)? Do you feel that the genre is growing and
changing to adapt to modern times?
Stephens: If I could wave a wand and erase the negative stigmas associated with
reading romance, I would be the wand-wavingest girl on the streets. However, since I
cannot, I try to appreciate the stigmas for two reasons. First, these stigmas are such an
efficient way to identify people to avoid, because it takes a really broken person to
stigmatize an activity that makes people happy and has no negative impact on the
world. Second, these stigmas create such a strong reading community. Romance
readers are an amazing, supportive group in part because they continue bonding over
what they love despite outside condemnation.
I feel the romance genre mirrors societal norms and continues to adapt to modern
times, specifically in relation to misogyny and other forms of bigotry. Like society, the
romance genre is far from perfect, but we are seeing movement toward stronger female
characters and more representation in modern romance novels than those written in
prior decades. Readers now seem to be rejecting authors that refuse to evolve—just
another example of a strong, supportive community!
Question: Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Stephens: I have one quirky writing habit that I always hoped no one would ask about.
Even during the hottest days of the summer, I must wear my favorite writing sweatshirt.
It’s hot pink, three sizes too big, and rocks the Circus Circus logo across the chest. Yes,
the Vegas casino that looks like the set of a 1980s gameshow. But I’m always cold, I
refuse to be uncomfortable, and if I’m being completely honest with myself…I love
Circus Circus. So it’s a win for everyone except my husband who would probably burn it
if he didn’t think it would lead to certain divorce.
Question: Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Stephens: “It actually doesn’t take much to be considered a difficult woman. That’s why there are
so many of us.” – Jane Goodall
I have been considered a difficult woman since birth. But now that I’m writing romance
novels about the sex-work industry from my cozy little nook in the US Bible Belt, my
difficulty scores are measuring off the charts. It’s nice to remember I’m in good and
plentiful company.
The Echo on the Water
by JA Huss
Publication date: July 25th 2024
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense
Rosie Harlow is desperately seeking… well, she’s not sure. A romance would be nice but so would a dinner conversation with her pre-teen son. Too bad her boy is way too busy growing up to pay his mama any attention. Rosie never meant to swear off men and she’s not frigid—you don’t become a single mom at fifteen by being frigid—but this dry spell of hers has gotten out of hand and something must be done.
Enter Amon Parrish. Back in high school Amon was voted most likely to get caught with his pants down. He was a trouble maker. The quintessential bad boy. But twelve years away from home, traveling the world and working with Collin Creed doing super-secret (and somewhat illegal) things, changed all that. These days Amon Parrish is a brand-new, stand-up man.
And, to Rosie’s surprise, a romantic man as well. Because he has decided to court her. And this is not just any ordinary courting, either. It’s… well, a page ripped right out of a bodice ripper.
But everyone in Disciple, West Virginia has a secret in their past.
Even the cheerful, perpetually optimistic, and seemingly innocent, Rosie Harlow.
The Echo on the Water is a swooning plate of small-town fiction served up with a side of spice. It honors the themes of friends to lovers, found family, and is filled with bigger-than-life, morally-grey characters against a backdrop of the weird and wonderful.
ROSIE
When the show is over everyone gets up to leave, as do I, but Amon stays right where he is. Obviously waiting for me.
I make my way to the end of the row and stand before him, his eyes dancin’ a little. “Amon.”
“Rosie.”
“Are you here for me?”
“I am.”
“Oh. I see. Well. What can I do for you?”
“I asked you to go bowling last night.”
“You did.”
“You turned me down.”
“That’s right.”
“Well, I was wondering if it was just bad timing or if it was me.”
I let out a breath. “Why are you wondering that?”
“Why?” His eyebrows shoot up. “Because if it was bad timing, I’m gonna ask you again. But if you don’t like me, I’ll move on.”
“That’s very forthcoming of you.”
“Thanks. I like to be forthcoming.”
He’s talking with a straight face, but I’m smiling pretty big right now. “Well, can I think about this a little bit?”
“Can you define ‘little bit?’”
I smile bigger. “You’re flirtin’ with me.”
“Why does that surprise you? You flirt with everyone.”
“Well, yeah. But that’s me. You’re… you.”
“What are you saying? I’m not flirty?”
“Are you flirty?”
He smiles now. But he narrows his eyes too. “Should I ask again? Or should I move on?”
“If I say move on, will you truly move on? Or will you try again?”
His smile grows. “Try again.”
“Then I’m gonna tell you to move on.”
He nods, still smiling, then leans forward. “By the way, I read your little paper. Not the one you gave me, but the one from last week. My sisters had a copy.”
“Oh, right. They do the Revival marketing and I’m part of the marketing now.”
“I like it.”
“Which part? The whole idea of it? Or just the vibe?”
“The writing.”
I nearly giggle. “You like the ads?”
“Yeah. I’m kinda jealous of Robust and Hearty because I like his taste in women. And I was thinking that the woman he described sounded a little bit like you.”
I nearly guffaw. I manage to hold it in, but my cheeks get hot and I know I’m probably turning bright red. “You fancy a…” I pause to think back on what kind of partner Robust and Hearty was looking for. “A courageous and resilient woman who is ready to embrace the thrills and trials of a life less ordinary?”
Amon nods. “I do.”
“Well.” I pull myself together. “I’m sorry to disappoint you, Amon Parrish. But I am not looking for a man at the moment. I am quite happy with my life as it is.”
He nods at me. Pretends to take off an imaginary hat and bows a little. And even though he’s not in costume—he’s wearing his usual outfit of black tactical pants and black t-shirt—I picture him in one. “Well, then,” he says. “I will leave you to your day. But I’ll see ya around, Rosie Harlow.”
I nod back. “See ya around, Amon Parrish.”
He turns and walks out, not even looking back. But I’m not unhappy about that because he already told me that he’s gonna try again.
I am being courted.
By Amon Parrish, of all people.
