I couldn’t find a good quote on page 56 so I went to page 156 and found this.

I stared at myself in the mirror.

My nose was back to normal; the only remnant of my two black eyes was a slight yellow shading across one brow bone. I could use Ian’s balm, but I didn’t want to. For all I knew, the stuff was an aphrodisiac or some kind of lust potion, which would explain my hopping into bed with him so easily.

“It couldn’t just be that you were horny and he’s hot”? I asked the woman in the mirror.

She gave me the finger.

Exclusive Excerpt:

We stand under the canopy next to the seaplane and wait for the W Maldives staff to take us to our villas. I look over at Erik and Orie and step close to them, needing their protection. Clayton stands a few feet away, stares at me for a second more then turns toward his friends, who’ve been watching the entire scenario closely. The women, I note, don’t look too happy with me or with him.

Three women from the resort walk over with wet towels and drinks. I take both gladly. I wipe my face with the towel and then take a long sip of the drink. I notice that Erik and Orie are suspiciously quiet. I raise a brow.

“What?”

“You know what,” Erik whispers.

“I think you might get laid on this trip,” Orie says a bit too loudly.

I almost spit out my drink.

“Orie!” My face turns red as I quickly look around to see if anyone heard him. And by anyone, I mean him.

“What? It’s about time, girl,” he says innocently. “You’re the last of your kind. Who else do you know who’s a virgin at twenty- three? It’s a sacrilege.”

“He’s right, you know,” Erik chimes in with a smile. “It’s kind of like the worst thing I’ve ever heard.”

I can’t even manage a response.

.

.

“There’s gotta be cobwebs in there by now,” he continues as he sips his drink. “It can’t be too pretty.”

Orie holds out his drink and clinks with Erik. “Here’s to our girl finally arriving at the party.”

I choke on my drink this time and Erik hits me on the back. Are they serious? I look over to where Clayton is standing with his friends and notice that his arms are crossed and his head is tilted slightly to the side. Almost like he’s listening. There’s a small smile on his face, maybe from something his friends said or from the TMI that my friends have blurted out to the world. Who knows? But in any case, I feel like Renee Zellweger in the movie Bridget Jones’s Diary, when she walks into the party wearing a bunny costume when it wasn’t a dress-up party and everyone else was wearing normal clothes. Except in my case, girl in bunny outfit means VIRGIN. Oh my God, I think I really am going to die.

“Would you guys please lower your voices?” I manage to mutter.

Erik raises his brows and shrugs his shoulders.

“You can’t fault a guy for being honest.”

Before I can give them both a proper lecture on the merits of abstinance, a nice-looking gentleman dressed in white linen pants and shirt walks over to us.

“Miss Sophie Walker?” he asks with a smile.

“Yes.”

“I’m Iain Summers, the general manager. It is a pleasure to have you here with us at the W Spa & Resort.”

“Thank you so much. These are my friends, Erik Johnson and Orie Pratt.”

“Lovely to meet you all.” Iain motions toward a young Indian man.

.

.

“This is Bikram. He will be your butler for the duration of your stay.”

A butler? This resort really is no joke. Bikram smiles at us cordially. I like him instantly.

“Nice to meet you, Bikram,” we all say.

“Miss Walker, Mr. Johnson and Mr. Pratt, welcome to our island. If you’re ready, I would like to show you to your bungalow now.” Bikram speaks with a thick accent. He has a general sense of calm about him that you don’t see too often. Who wouldn’t, I think to myself as I look around at the general splendor. Working in heaven every day would be anyone’s dream.

We grab our carry-on luggage and follow Bikram to the golf cart that he’s using to take us to our bungalow. We pass Clayton and his friends, who are now talking to Iain. He is laughing, but looks over at me and nods. I blush and look away. He’s too good looking for words. I’m thankful the golf cart is waiting to take me away from drooling over his perfection. Bikram gets in the driver’s seat, Erik and Orie take the middle seats, and I am unfortunately left at the back of the cart facing behind, which happens to be toward Clayton and his friends. I pretend to study my manicure so I won’t stare. Again.

“Isn’t this unbelievable?” Erik says in excitement as the cart drives off.

“It’s heaven,” I agree. I turn around to face them and smile as Orie and Erik lean into each other, holding hands. They are so in love. I’m so happy for them. This is the perfect setting for romance and it makes me long for what they have. A companion. A lover. A mate. I wonder if it will ever happen.

Bikram takes a left off the dock and heads away from the overwater villas, which have a panoramic view of the Indian Ocean. We’ve booked a beach bungalow because it’s a bit cheaper.

.

.

I’m happy with it but I do kind of wish that we were staying in an overwater one. Perched on top of the ocean every day like that would surely be the experience of a lifetime. My gaze settles on a giant villa that sits at the end of the long wooden path that leads along a row of villas that rest on the sea. Bikram motions toward them.

“Those are the Seascape Villas and at the end is the Ocean Haven.”

“It is enormous!” I’m sure he can hear the awe in my voice. What kind of people get to stay there?

“Yes, it is unbelievable, too. The villa is fifty-two hundred square feet, with a living room and two bedrooms. It is really fantastic. Very luxurious. It is the jewel of the Maldives.”

“How much does it go for?” Orie asks curiously. I’m glad he does because I’m dying to know.

“It is about fifteen thousand American dollars a night right now, in high season.”

“Wow,” I say.

“So it’s like the Hope Diamond of villas?” Orie says to Bikram, who laughs at his comparison.

“Yes, I guess you could call it that, Mr. Pratt.” Bikram says.

“Is it booked?” Orie is never afraid to ask anything. Nothing fazes or embarrasses him. Another one of the amazing qualities I love about him.

“Yes, sir, a guest has just booked the villa for fifteen nights. I believe he’s checking in today. He is a returning guest. He stayed with us last year for fifteen days as well.”

“That’s . . . ” Orie whistles softly.

“A lot of fucking money,” Erik finishes. My thoughts exactly.

Bikram smiles. “Yes, Mr. Pratt. It is a lot of money.”

“Must be nice,” Orie says with a smile, but I know he could care less. Money has never been a driving force for him. He’s more of a live-your- passion kind of guy.

We head down a white sandy path, off the beach and deeper into the lush, tropical island. I marvel at all the foliage and vibrant colors of this small paradise. The beach villas blend in well with the jungle vegetation. I’m struck again by the awesome picture, the live canvas of art that is right here every day for guests to see.

Bikram continues down the velvet sandy path and gives us a quick tour of the resort. Almost all the restaurants are centrally located in one pocket of the island next to the main u-shaped beach and are accessible on foot. All the restaurants and the gym are clustered close together. We’re surprised to hear that there’s a small underground dance club on the island that is open three nights a week. We’re told that we can ask for bikes, but honestly everything is so close that I can’t imagine why you’d need them.

The spa is located in a giant villa across from the overwater guest villas. It looks like the ultimate sanctuary. I can’t wait to have a massage.

Everything is so tastefully done and just reeks of relaxation. Bikram tells us that they have yoga and water classes for free every morning in the main guest pool, which is next to the restaurant where they serve breakfast. We all quickly decide to attend the following day.

“I can book any treatment for you at the spa at any time. There are many wonderful options. And we are very pleased to have Noom with us right now.”

“Who is she?” I ask.

“She is a crystal energy healer,” Bikram tells us. “She is very famous here on the island. Lots of Hollywood celebrities come to see her.”

“Really?” Erik asks. “Hollywood celebrities, huh?”

“Yes, sir. She can cure anything, from physical to mental ailments.”

Erik immediately turns to look at me.

“You’ve gotta see her.”

Gee, thanks. Do I look like I need that much help, I think.

“Yes, you do,” Erik says, obviously reading my mind.

“Would you like me to book a session with Noom for tomorrow, Miss Walker?”

“Yes, please,” I say. If I don’t do it, I know Erik will for me. Who knows? Maybe Noom will be able to help me.

“Around ten o’clock, after your breakfast?” Bikram asks me pleasantly.

“That sounds perfect.” Well, great. I haven’t been here for a day and I’m already in therapy. I guess I can’t complain, because I did come here to have an awakening of sorts.

Bikram makes a quick turn and heads down another path, away from the main resort buildings but still along the sea. He soon pulls up to a straw-thatched bungalow.

“We have you booked at the Beach Oasis.”

We jump off the cart and follow Bikram as he opens the door to our bungalow. I gasp in pleasure. It is spectacular. We have a cozy living area that leads into the master room with a king-sized bed that looks welcoming and plush with its crisp, white bedding. There’s a staircase in the living area that goes up to a deck with views across the sea, for daytime or an evening of star gazing. We also have a private sundeck with access to the white sand beach. And our own circular daybed that sits next to a plunge pool I can’t wait to jump into.

We walk back into the living room and Bikram opens another door.

“And this is your connecting oasis, with a twin bed for Miss Walker. You also have your own private bath.”

The room is pretty and I’m really happy but I can’t help but frown at the twin bed. Will I always sleep on a twin bed alone?

How sad.

“This is so cute,” Erik says as he comes up behind me and puts his hands on my shoulders.

He’s no dummy. He knows how this looks. He knows what I’m think- ing. You are pathetic, my mind screams at me. What were you thinking? Coming to the Maldives, the most romantic place in the world, all alone?

“You don’t like it?” Bikram asks in concern. He can’t miss the frown on my face.

“Oh no, no, Bikram. It is unreal. This is all so wonderful. Thank you,” I quickly answer, hoping I haven’t offended him in the slightest. It’s not his fault I’m a spinster. Or a loser. Or a twenty- three year old virgin loser.

Bikram doesn’t look convinced, so I smile brightly at him and hope I’m a good actress. “I love this.”

He nods slowly then motions toward our luggage, which we notice is already in the room.

“Please enjoy your stay, and if you need anything, I am at your service. I will confirm your appointment with Noom for tomorrow, Miss Walker.”

“Thank you, Bikram.”

Before he leaves, he pauses at the door. “I almost forgot to tell you that tomorrow night is our end of days party on the beach. I would be more than happy to book you a table.”

“End of days?” I ask curiously.

“Yes, tomorrow is a holy day. According to the old island-dwellers, it is either the end of the world as we know it or a rebirth. It is a very spiritual time. We will celebrate life tomorrow night.”

Huh. If it’s the end, I’m dying a virgin. I know Erik and Orie will be more than happy to point this out.

“Please make a reservation. We will be there to celebrate with you all,” Orie tells him.

Bikram leaves us to our oasis. We are all quiet for a moment.

“Sophie, there’s hope for you yet. Maybe the Holy Ghost will pay you a visit tomorrow night.” Erik says to me with a mischievous grin.

“That’s just rude,” I tell him pointedly. “And blasphemous.”

“Oh shit. Did our girl just throw a five-dollar word at us?” Orie laughs.

I look for something tangible to throw at them both and then the reality of where we are settles in. This is really paradise. We are the luckiest people alive.

I have a fun post to share with you today. The author has written an interesting guest post about her characters, I have a fun excerpt for you, and there’s a great giveaway, so don’t forget to enter!

~~~~
 Rayne Rachels shares with us about writing her characters
Sometimes the characters I create are difficult to write. They refuse to work with the plot I have created, or for some reason, I can’t stand them and want to kill them off so I don’t have to deal with them anymore. But then, there are a lot of characters I have created that I really like and enjoy writing about them and their adventures.
Ember Winterstone in Reluctantly Undead was one of those characters who was really fun to write. This was the first time I have written a story in first person, but it gave me the opportunity to explore Ember and her world through her eyes, which I didn’t have with Queen Zophia, the psycho vampire. I only saw Zophia through Ember’s eyes.
Ember has a lot of issues. She deals with her weight. Being a size 16 is not easy. When she gets stressed, Ember eats chocolate which, of course, is not a good thing for the weight issue. How many of us deal with this same issue? My hand is up.
Ember also has a crazy stepdad and an even weirder stepbrother. She tends to be stubborn and sometimes mouthy, but that is part of her charm.
And then she is bitten by a vampire and left for dead.
According to Ember, being a vampire sucks because somehow she managed to totally screw up the whole transformation process. She has the fangs and the desire for blood, but she can walk around in the sunlight as long as she has her trusty sunglasses on, and she still eats food, especially chocolate. How cool to be a vampire, but not have to give up chili-cheese fries or chocolate milkshakes!
It was fun following Ember as she discovered what being a vampire really was, her strange heritage her mom kept hidden from her, and figuring out what really mattered.
Honestly, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Ember.
Blurb:
Ember Winterstone is not having a good night. She wakes up in a dumpster. Her neck hurts where her date used her as a meal. Vampire hunters chase her, and the other vampires think she is the real queen, especially since she is a day walker, eats food, drinks almost no blood, and stands up to Zophia, the psycho vampire queen.
Ember’s problems have just begun.
Her mother has kept a couple of major secrets from her, the two men who make Ember drool refuse to claim her, and the psycho vampire queen decides Ember must die.
Excerpt:
I looked around.
My brain started functioning, and it dawned on me.
I was in a dumpster—a stinking, nasty, filthy, rotting trash-filled dumpster!
I couldn’t believe it. I mean, how did I get in here? I didn’t exactly climb in willingly. I can’t even stand opening the large green trash can when I take out the trash at home. The smell—especially in summer—is enough to gag a maggot! My climbing into the dumpster on my own was off the list of possibilities.
I sniffed and looked down.
My jeans!
There was no way I was going to get the ode de trashcan funk out of my jeans.
I groaned.
I just bought them, and they fit good…really good! It’s not easy finding jeans to fit a size 16 frame, especially with a butt like mine.
I was pissed.
Someone was going to pay for them, just as soon as I figured a way out of the gross, over-sized tin can in which I was buried.
Glancing around, I sighed. The dumpster was only half-full, so getting out probably wasn’t going to be easy.
Pulling myself into a sitting position was an act of Congress, but standing? That had me clueless.
I pushed and shoved stuff out of my way. I started to groan when I heard a sound. At least, I thought I heard something. I got really still and waited.
Nothing.
I started to take to move again.
“Are you sure she’s dead?”
I froze.
“Yeah, I’m sure,” replied a second male voice.
What the hell, my eyes widened and my heart pounded against my rib cage.
“It just sounds strange that she died like that. Maybe she just fainted,” suggested the first voice.
“She was dead. I waited an hour. No pulse. No heartbeat. She was dead. I tossed her into the dumpster.”
Edward Scot and Victor Blackwood have despised one another for nearly a quarter of a century, but now their simmering hatred is about to erupt.
Desperate to end the fighting before someone dies, Cassie seeks help from local seer Abigail Hastings, Evan Blackwood’s grandmother. Evan persuades Cassie to help him learn the truth, teaming them up once again in their darkest hour. New revelations about Evan and his family make it difficult for Cassie to cling to a shield of anger, but can Evan and Cassie stop a feud that has taken on a life of its own? Conclusion to the Cassie Scot series.
Now enjoy an excerpt:
I escaped from Alexander DuPris the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, only to be told by my family that I was being melodramatic. And this right on the heels of informing me that we had a hostage in the guest bedroom.
A hostage, you say? Surely now I’m being melodramatic! But no, Juliana used her healing gift to knock Amanda Lee unconscious, then shoved her in a supply closet until Dad picked her up from school, at which point the two of them moved the body into the backseat of his car.
“Are you crazy?” I asked. I looked from face to face, trying to find a trace of sanity, but they were all doing their normal after-dinner things exactly as if nothing were wrong. Mom, hugely pregnant with twins, crocheted an afghan, Nicolas was out with Madison, Juliana looked entirely too pleased with herself, Isaac played a video game, Elena hid behind a book, and Adam and Christina played in their rooms. It could have been any normal Tuesday evening, except for the hostage upstairs.
“Cassandra,” my father said, “you haven’t been around. You don’t understand.”
Of course I didn’t understand. No one had told me that things were getting this bad. It was as if I’d been on the moon for the past two months instead of in Pennsylvania, calling home three times a week. But oh, everything is fine at home. Just fine. Don’t worry about us. How are you doing? When will you be home?
Ultimate Fear—Kristine Mason
When a deranged mother’s grief drives her to replace her dead son over and over, obsession leads to murder…
Chicago detective Jessica Donavan will never stop looking for her missing daughter. Her obsession has destroyed her marriage, but the search is the only thing that helps keep her sane and her mind off of everything she’s lost—her husband and her baby girl. When she uncovers a string of unsolved disappearances and reappearances of a number of baby boys, Jessica turns to her soon to be ex, Dante Russo, a former Navy SEAL turned investigator for the private agency, CORE, to help her fit together the pieces in this perplexing puzzle. But as Dante helps her, she realizes just how much she still craves his support—and his touch.
Dante is still in love with his wife and would do anything to have her back in his life again. He’s been miserable since she left him to deal with the grief over their daughter’s abduction, never understanding how much he grieves as well. When Jessica tells him about the case she’s working, he jumps at the chance to take part in her investigation. He’s hoping not only to save their marriage and ease his personal pain over the loss of their daughter, but also to stop a serial kidnapper from taking another victim.
As Jessica and Dante work side by side, pregnant women begin to turn up missing or dead, and they start to uncover the consequences of another woman’s unfathomable grief. The childless mother doesn’t just want a baby. She wants a newborn straight from the womb.
And now for my review of Ultimate KIll, Book One of the Ultimate CORE Trilogy.
ULTIMATE KILL cover
My Review
Jake finally found Naomi, after five years of searching. Taking a job at CORE, a private investigation company allowed him better access to information. He liked his job and was good at it. Using his new position and his former training as a Marine, he tracked her down. Now, he only has to ask her, why? Why, when they’d planned to be married, have children, grow old together, did she run?
Naomi is shocked when she looks into the eyes of the man she loves. She knew the day could come when he’d find her, but she’s still not prepared. How does she explain leaving him, running and hiding from him? She can’t tell him the truth. About how a monster killed her parents and her brother. A man who’ll stop at nothing to possess her. Jake would have wanted to hunt the man down. And she couldn’t risk losing him to.
Jake still loved Naomi, Lisa, or whatever her name was. They’d been together for three years before she vanished. They’d planned on getting married, having children, and growing old together. Those feelings were still there, as binding as ever, but he’s disappointed. She’s still lying to him. Still trying to protect him.
Mickey has got himself and his twin brother, Harrison, into something really bad. Harrison should have broken this chain some time ago. Mickey pulls him into a job, it goes bad, they end up in prison. Only this time, it won’t be a stay behind bars. It’ll be a permanent dirt nap.
Harrison has a good idea what the devices he helped plant across the country will do, if not the reason why. Only a select few know that, and they never allow the brothers to be alone. It can end only one way. Especially after they meet the boss face to face, and recognize him.
The boss is a very influential, famous man, with an insatiable need for power and that one woman he needs to possess, if only to break her. No one defies him, not even her.
Ultimate Kill has it all. A megalomaniac sacrificing countless innocents just to get that one woman. Two brothers caught in the middle, trying to get out alive. And the woman, trying to hide, to stay alive, and the man who loves her, who’ll do whatever it takes to protect her.
Lots of action, suspense, and some steamy sex scenes will keep you riveted, as the ultimate finale rushes at you. Brace yourself for the Ultimate Kill.
Author Kristine Mason
I didn’t pick up my first romance novel until I was in my late twenties. Immediately hooked, I read a bazillion books before deciding to write one of my own. After the birth of my first son I needed something to keep my mind from turning to mush, and Sesame Street wasn’t cutting it. While that first book will never see the light of day, something good came from writing it. I realized my passion and found a career I love.
When I’m not writing contemporary romances and dark, romantic suspense novels (or reading them!) I’m chasing after my four kids and two neurotic dogs.
Title: Purr-fect Mating (A Lil Genie Series Novella)
Author: Sheryl Winters
Publisher: Roane Publishing
Release Date: June 23, 2014
Keywords: Paranormal, Romance, Shifters
My Review
At around 50 pages, I breezed through this in about 20 minutes.  You might think that’s not long enough to develop genuine characters and a good plot. But the author pulled it off splendidly.
From the moment Fhina discovered a naked man in her front yard I was hooked and from then on it was pure fun.
You have to keep in mind that these characters are not human, they are shifters. And the town is no ordinary town, it’s filled with supernatural beings, including some flighty witches.
When Wulfar and Fhina match gazes, they are bound. They’re soul mates. And things move quickly. The morning after their wedding, Fhina wakes up to a note from her absent groom, telling her to take care of his dog.
You’d think Fhina would fall apart, but she picks herself up and soldiers on.
Wulfar is in no position to tell his new bride where he is. All he can do is watch as the now pregnant Fhina tries to remember her missing husband and prepares for her new arrival.
This was fun from the first page to the last.
You might think Fhina is dumb. Why can’t she even remember who her husband is? Doesn’t she wonder why he left his dog? She’s under a curse, that’s why.
Her family is supportive and quick to help Fhina, but they can’t break the curse. Neither can the creepy witches she turns to for help. I wouldn’t trust them.
When Fhina tries to use a spell, it backfires, leaving her with an unwanted wing to get rid of. Poor girl. She really has no clue.
And poor Wulfar. No way to communicate with Fhina. Unable to be there for her as her due date nears. Fighting his shifter instincts to go run with the pack.
The dilemma for these two had me laughing out loud. What are they to do?
I knew the curse would be broken. I just didn’t know how. And I had a fun time finding out.
Once you start reading this story, you’ll get why the author chose the title.
A quickie romance with hilarious repercussions, Purr-fect Mating left a big impression.
Blurb:
On their wedding night, at the stroke of midnight, Wulfar changes into his shifted wolf form and cannot shift back. Not even to communicate with the woman he loves.   Fhina, upon waking the day after their mating, no longer recognizes her mate. Pregnant and confused, she’s convinced herself her mate has run away and left her to live alone. With his dog.   Can the cursed pair find a counter charm before Fhina gives birth? Will Wulfar be able to curb his inclination to run?   Or will their mutual curses break up their love affair before it’s really even started.
Enjoy my character interview with Fhina and Wulfar!
Hi Fhina and Wulfar. Please make yourselves comfortable. I’ll try to make this fun and painless. Shall we begin?
My first question is for Fhina.
What was your first thought when you met Wulfar?
I thought he was a tall drink of deliciousness.
When you woke up and Wulfar was gone and all there was, was a strange dog, did you believe Wulfar had just up and left or did you think something bad had happened to him?
I truly thought he left me. I remember being so upset, so nervous and then well, when I found out I was pregnant I was a little past miffed.
I’m trying to imagine what it must have been like to wake up and find you’re no longer yourself. What was your first thought and I’m curious about if it was hard to adjust to being a 4-legged creature. Was the stuff like walking, or, pardon me, going to the bathroom hard to navigate or was it second nature?
Laura, if I can be blunt. I’m a wolf shifter so my second form comes quite naturally for me. As to body functions? I’ve always thought that females make a little more out of it than it is. I am after all a male I’ve never had a problem with bathroom functions.
What he’s saying, Laura is that he has no problem peeing outside.” Fhina whispers.
Fhina, when Wulfar vanished and you’re left with this dog, did you immediately think there was something different about it, or did you accept it as an ordinary dog?
I was so confused and then there was that fact that Wulfy, excuse me,” Fhina giggles, “My Wulfar makes such a beautiful dog.”
Honestly, Fhina,” Wulfar snorts.
Well you do. But to answer your question. I accepted him as an ordinary dog. I was after all cursed.”
Wulfar, so you’re stuck in wolf form. Which was harder. Trying to communicate to Fhina or resisting the call of the wolf?
Truthfully it was the begging for food that got me. It might come naturally for dogs but as an Alpha wolf I had a hard time with it. In my wolf form I’m more than capable of taking down a deer but the constant grovelling for food was very wearying.”
Thanks so much for being such fun to interview Fhina and Wulfar I hope we can chat again sometime.
Oh, I almost forgot one last question. This ones for both of you.
Are either of you wanting to get a dog now?
I think the twins are more than enough challenge for us.” Wulfar laughs heartily. He’s bouncing Colton on his knee pushing the baby carriage with Angel sound asleep in it.
I think perhaps later on.” Fhina pats her stomach a mysterious smile on her face.
Excerpt:
The Prologue
            Evan’s face stared back at him from a large glossy poster hanging in the front window of the local post office. The words “Wanted Alive” were splattered across the top in big red letters. Someone had cast an animation spell over it to make his hooded eyes shift slightly, as if in guilt. Evan had seen all that before, but a new addition to the bottom of the poster stopped him dead in his tracks: “One Million Dollar Reward.”
            “Crap,” he muttered under his breath. He looked around, more than half expecting an ambush right there on the street, but he saw nothing sinister. He reached within himself for his magic anyway, channeling it into a shield that would protect him from most magical attacks.
            A million dollars. This was going to bring out every crazy in the country! He had been fighting bounty hunters for over a month, ever since the wanted posters first went up, but then the reward had only been $100,000.
            The Scots were either getting desperate or stupid to try something like this. Rumors already abounded regarding his bottomless reserves of magic, making him out to be some kind of inexhaustible fountain of power. The million-dollar reward would only confirm these lies in the minds of many; which meant that if someone did manage to catch Evan, the Scots were unlikely to get their hands on him. Why would a bounty hunter settle for money when he could have Evan’s magic for himself?
            Evan turned away from the poster and was just about to continue down the street when a black Suburban turned into the post office parking lot, cutting him off. He waited for it to pull into a spot, his shields still up, his senses alert.
            Robert Scot, Edward Scot’s cousin, stepped out of the vehicle, threw Evan a dirty look, then went around to the back to pull a four-year-old girl out of a car seat. The presence of the child did not convince Evan to lower his guard, though he truly hoped they hadn’t sunk so low as to fight when an innocent child might get hurt.
            One million dollars. People had killed for far less, and had allowed children to become victims. Robert Scot was a strong practitioner, on par with Edward, but he didn’t have access to the secrets of alchemy, and he was not a rich man. He earned a good living as a bank manager or something, but one million dollars had to be a temptation.
            The two men did not take their eyes from one another as Robert walked into the post office. Robert clutched the wriggling child, who clearly wanted down, to his chest in an almost painful grip. A minute later he was past, and Evan breathed a little easier. He walked away from the post office, heading down the sidewalk in the direction of his Prius, parked a few stores down. He still had errands to run, but in light of what he had learned about the reward, they didn’t seem important.
            Suddenly, an explosion rent the air. Evan dove behind the nearby antique shop, his shields maxed out, his senses hyper-alert. When he peeked around the corner, he saw smoke and debris where there had once been a Suburban.
            The chubby face of the little girl filled Evan’s mind, and he felt a moment of terror as he wondered whether or not Robert and his little girl had already returned to the car. Practically flying from his hidden position, Evan sped back to the post office and that mockery of a wanted poster, his eyes searching the interior until they fell, thankfully, onto the shocked faces of Robert Scot and his daughter huddled safely inside the building.
            Robert’s face didn’t remain shocked for long; it fell into an enraged scowl. Robert shoved the girl into the arms of a nearby post office patron and marched outside to confront Evan man to man.
            “You son of a bitch! My daughter could have been in there. I almost left her there while I ran inside, but then I saw you.”
            “I didn’t do that. I ran back to make sure you were all right.” More the girl than Robert, but still….
            Robert didn’t respond with words; instead he let loose with a torrent of raw energy that battered Evan’s shields until he could scarcely hold them. Raw magic wasn’t normally a useful attack strategy, but powerful emotion could turn it into one for a short time. Another blast like that and Evan would be in trouble, but he had no intention of letting Robert get off another shot. He parried the attack with his own telekinetic gift, throwing Robert bodily backward, forcefully enough that he smashed through the wanted poster and the glass window, shattering it.
            Evan didn’t wait for Robert to get back up; he ran. He hadn’t caused the explosion, and he had no reason to finish a fight against a man he scarcely knew, but one whose family seemed to want to go to war with his.
            The worst part was that someone in Evan’s family probably had done it–they had been muttering for weeks that they couldn’t just let the Scots persecute him. Evan had begged them to give him time, but obviously time had run out.
            Robert wouldn’t care whether Evan had been personally involved or not, nor would the rest of the Scots. And maybe they were right. Evan would find out who had done it and set him or her straight, but the damage was already done.
            The first direct shot had been fired.
Robert Manary is an international playboy and man of mystery, with the charm and sophistication of James Bond shaken not stirred with a couple ounces of Cyrano de Bergerac, a dash of Rasputin, and garnished with the rapier wit of Thurston Howell the Third.
That’s how he sees himself, anyway.
The truth is Robert Manary is a construct created to protect the dubious reputation of his Clark Kent like mild mannered writer/puppeteer/the man pulling the levers and breathing life into the Great and Powerful Oz (don’t look too closely behind the curtain).
Manary is an award winning blogger, an erotic romance novel writer, the author of a pretty decent romantic comedy, and for a brief period in the early nineties served as dictator of a small South American country.
Most of that is true.
Manary is also an experimental artist who has no clue how to write an Author’s Bio, and definitely no idea how to end one.
P.S. He is also a shameless plunderer of pop culture.
 Elisabeth Wheatley has some exciting news to share with you about her YA Paranormal Novella, Fanged Princess. Read on to learn how you can get your free copy!
After reading my review, head on over to Sherry’s blog at fundinmental for more from Elisabeth and check out Sherry’s review!
~~~

And now here’s Elisabeth!

After much consideration, I have finally made the first book in my Young Adult vampire novella series free. Why? Because all the cool kids are doing it and I know how much I adore freebies, so why not?
Fanged Princess is what I like to call a vampire love story from the perspective of the third wheel. It’s told in first person present tense by Haddie, the sister of a vampire prince who’s had the misfortune to fall in love with a human. (Though she has a bit of her own romance, don’t worry.)
I got the idea for Haddie’s story reading another vampire series and thinking how much it sucked (no pun intended) that the vampires I read about really tended to have crappy sibling relationships. As a tragically unsocial little country girl, my brothers were some of my closest friends and I thought it would be fun to transpose that onto vampires. Hence, the idea for Fanged Princess was born.
As always I am very excited to share this story with the world and it is my hope that through this I will be able to reach more people than ever before. So grab a copy at your favorite eBook retailer and tell your friends. Tell lots and LOTS of friends.
Thank you Laura for hosting me on your blog! It’s fun as always.

It’s a pleasure having you Elisabeth!

Check out Elisabeth on her blog and tell her hi!

My Review

Haddie gets it. Love chooses you and you’re powerless against it.  She doesn’t want to though. Like her brother Damian, she too fell in love with a human. And she wears the scars for her transgression.

Her father is the Vampire King and he’s okay with dallying with and feeding on humans, but draws the line at love.

So Haddie rushes to her brother’s side, determined to save him from the same horrific events she went through. And to save the life of the girl he loves, Madelynn.

Haddie (Princess Hadassah) won me over quickly. She went through a horrific punishment for her sin of loving a human. Her father extracted a terrible price and she wants to protect her brother from the same fate.

She knows the enforcers will be coming, led by the most feared one of all, her Uncle Devin. He’s cold, remorseless and efficient, always getting the job done. And he’s brought along the twins, Jerome and Ayden.

The author did an excellent job with the little details that make a story feel real, like this scene:

“I recognize them as Jerome and Ayden Thatcher, twin brother’s who’ve been working for my uncle for years. I’ve always had trouble telling which was which. They even smell the same.”

Even smell the same. That right there struck me. The author stayed in character, referencing their smell, something a human wouldn’t notice, but a vampire would.

There’s some humor here too. Take this scene when Haddie arrives to help her brother:

“Come off it Damian,” I say, dismissively waving my hand. “I didn’t come out here to eat your girlfriend.”

As the enforcer’s tightened the circle, getting closer and closer to these three, I couldn’t help but wonder how they’d survive. That’s where the author threw me a bone. A stranger who just might help them, if he doesn’t kill them too. I won’t mention a name, but I kind of hope Haddie and the handsome stranger get together. They’re a good match. Both fiercely loyal, tough as nails, and just as stubborn.

I could see this union infuriating her father even more. But, I’ll have to read Fanged Outcast to find out what happens with these two. And I’m hoping we get to meet some of the other beings mentioned in this first book. The rusalkas, makaras, koschei, harpies, ogres…and whatever else exists in Elisabeth’s world.

I read this in one sitting, racing to the explosive finale.

Who will survive?

Will family kill family?

The answer awaits.
