Dead Things

  Eric Carter #1

by Stephen Blackmoore

15784263

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Fantasy/ Urban Fantasy

My 5

It’s easy to forget how dangerous they are. Seeing them is one thing, but this is different. I’ve thinned out the barrier between worlds. Given half the chance, they’d eat me.

Read on if you want to know more.

Synopsis

Necromancer is such an ugly word, but it’s a title Eric Carter is stuck with.

He sees ghosts, talks to the dead. He’s turned it into a lucrative career putting troublesome spirits to rest, sometimes taking on even more dangerous things. For a fee, of course.

When he left L.A. fifteen years ago he thought he’d never go back. Too many bad memories. Too many people trying to kill him.

But now his sister’s been brutally murdered and Carter wants to find out why.

Was it the gangster looking to settle a score? The ghost of a mage he killed the night he left town? Maybe it’s the patron saint of violent death herself, Santa Muerte, who’s taken an unusually keen interest in him.

Carter’s going to find out who did it and he’s going to make them pay.

As long as they don’t kill him first.

Treasure

  Seed Savers #1

by S. Smith

27263757

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Children’s/MG dystopian sci-fi adventure

My 56 is actually from pages 5 and 6 as page 56 only had one sentence.

  From page 5

Holding out her closed fist, she whispered, “What I have here will change the world.”

Dante’s eyes widened. “It’s so small.”

From page 6

“You can’t make food. Everyone knows that food comes from Stores and from Delivery Trucks if you have government ration tickets – but people can’t make food.”

Dante laughed. “But wouldn’t it be great if people could make food?”

Read on if you want to know more.

Synopsis

Two kids, two bikes, and an idea they can change their world.

It’s 2077. There’s no apocalypse, but some things are different. Things like the weather, the internet, and food. In twelve-year-old Clare’s world, blueberry is just a flavor and apples are found only in fairy tales.

Then one day Clare meets an old woman who teaches her about seeds and real food. The woman (Ana) tempts Clare with the notion that food exists other than the square, processed, packaged food she has always known. Under Ana’s tutelage, Clare and her friends learn about seeds and gardening despite suspicions that such actions are illegal.

When the authorities discover the children’s forbidden tomato plant and arrest their mother, Clare and her brother flee. Clare has heard of a place called “The Garden State,” and with their bikes, a little money, and backpacks, the children begin a lonely cross-country journey that tests them both physically and spiritually. Will they succeed in their quest to find a place of food freedom?  And can they, only children, help change the world?

Treasure is a gentle dystopian, frightening only is the possibility that we may not be far from the future it paints.

Landscape For Murder

A Brynn Bancroft Mystery

by Joyce T. Strand

27430435

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My 56

At first Brynn looked like she was going to scream, given the intrusion into her orderly and newly decorated home. Instead, she laughed. Then everyone was laughing.

Vincent sat down by the front door and, without any apology, started to bathe. That made everyone laugh even more.

In case you haven’t figured it out, Vincent is a cat. And he just about toppled the Christmas tree. LOL

Yeah, another cozy mystery series! This is going to be such fun.

Read on if you want to know more.

Synopsis

A friend’s murder. An unconnected cast of suspects, including the victim’s missing adult daughter. As if that wasn’t enough, Brynn Bancroft’s winery has been broken into. Can she deal with her co-owner ex and help the police find her friend’s murder so she can finally overcome her own troubled past and enjoy family life with her teenage ward?

If I had any class I’d show up in my dreams wearing a gorgeous Marie Antoinette-style dress and a pair of solid gold Chuck Taylors. My hair would be blue. I’ve always wanted blue hair.

I just received this book in the mail plus two others by Cheyanne, Motocross Me and Understudy. They all sound fun.

“What?” he says.

“You like keeping me off balance.”

“You can talk.”

I almost forgot how pissed off I am with him.  “Yeah, well, I’m not doing it intentionally.”

She has good reason to be mad at him in this scene!

I won the first two books in this series, and I’ve been wanting to try Paula Weston’s books. I just finished Shadows and started Haze. Having a great time.

The Dead Girls Of Hysteria Hall

by Katie Alender

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My 56

OBSERVATIONS MADE AFTER THE FACT

I hate you. And by the way, tell Janie I hate her, too.

Let me tell you something.

On a cold and loveless night, when the silver moonlight drinks the color from the earth and the grass tumbles in the wind like waves tossed on an endless, angry sea…

That is not the kind of memory that keeps you warm.

I’m about one third into this one and it is scary good!

What…did you hear that? LOL

Read on if you want to know more.

Synopsis

In this asylum, your mind plays tricks on you all the time…

Delia’s new house isn’t just a house. Long ago, it was the Piven Institute for the Care and Correction of Troubled Females—an insane asylum nicknamed “Hysteria Hall.” However, many of the inmates were not insane, just defiant and strong willed. Kind of like Delia herself.

But the house still wants to keep “troubled” girls locked away. So, in the most horrifying way, Delia gets trapped.

And that’s when she learns that the house is also haunted.

Ghost girls wander the halls in their old-fashioned nightgowns. A handsome ghost boy named Theo roams the grounds. Delia finds that all the spirits are unsettled and full of dark secrets. The house, as well, harbors shocking truths within its walls—truths that only Delia can uncover, and that may set her free.

But she’ll need to act quickly, before the house’s power overtakes everything she loves.

From master of suspense Katie Alender comes a riveting tale of twisted memories and betrayals, and the meaning of madness.

 The Captive Condition

by Kevin P. Keating

23344369

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My 56

…he applied for a library card at the college and ordered stacks of books. Sometimes he requested mystery novels and studied their plots, which like the streets of town were straight, perpendicular, Euclidean in their logic and predictability, cobbled together with fabricated blocks of prose, a black-and-white world that was precisely structured, carefully framed, and inhabited by characters as flat as the surrounding country-side. In those stories death was a farce, an amusing way to pass the time, but the Gonk, who was building something grandiose and dangerous in his mind, read these novels the same way he might read books on carpentry and electrical wiring – with a craftsman’s keen eye for detail and with the implicit understanding that he was bound to run into unexpected problems somewhere down the road.

I know this a bit long, but it’s only two sentences, and it says so much.

Read on if you want to know more.

Synopsis

A seemingly idyllic Midwestern college town turns out to be a nexus of horror in this spellbinding novel—emotionally and psychologically complex, at once chilling and deliciously dark—from a thrilling new voice in fiction.

When Emily Ryan is found drowned in the family pool, pumped full of barbiturates and alcohol, a series of events with cataclysmic consequences ensues. Emily’s lover, a college professor, finds himself responsible for her twin daughters, whose piercing stares fill him with the guilt and anguish he so desperately tries to hide from his wife. A low-level criminal named The Gonk takes over the cottage of a reclusive elderly artist, complete with graveyard and moonshine still, and devises plans for both. His young apprentice, haunted by inner demons, seeks retribution for the professor’s wicked deeds. The town itself, buzzing into decadent life after sundown, traps its inhabitants in patterns of inexplicable behavior all the while drawing them toward a night in which the horror will reach its disturbing and inevitable conclusion.

Delving into the deepest recesses of the human capacity for evil, Kevin P. Keating’s masterful novel will captivate readers from first to last.

 Soul Screamers

Volume One

by Rachel Vincent

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My 56 is a little different this week. I’m choosing a quote from each book as all three are in this volume. I’ve approximated where page 56 would be for the second and third stories.

From My Soul To Lose

Lydia’s  fingers shook in mine, and I opened my eyes to find her shuddering all over. I tried to pull my hand away, but she slapped her other palm over it, holding me tight even as her teeth began to chatter. “K-keep your eyes cl-closed,” she stuttered. “No m-matter what.”

***

From My Soul To Take

“She’s just trying to piss you off.”

“She says she’s been in your backseat.” I couldn’t keep suspicion from my tone.

***

From My Soul To Save

“Kaylee, you have no business in the Netherworld.”

Let’s hope your right.

“I know.” I smiled to set her at ease.

Read on if you want to know more.

The Silverton Chronicles

by Carmen Fox

My 56

This is a scene where Florian, Flo for short, was panicked after he couldn’t find Ivy.

“I’m okay. But I could do with a friend.”

“Okay.” He hung up. A few beats later, the phone rang. “Me again,” Flo said. “You do mean me, right?”

“Who else?”

“I’ll be right over.”

I rolled me eyes and smiled. Dork.

Read on if you want to know more.

Synopsis

Ivy’s neighbors have a secret. They aren’t human. But Ivy has a secret, too. She knows. As long as everyone keeps quiet, she’s happy working as a P.I. by day and chillaxing with her BFF Florian, a vampire, by night. When a routine pickup drops her in the middle of a murder, her two worlds collide. While Florian knows how to throw a punch, deep down he’s a softie. His idea of scary? Running out of hair product. It’s time Ivy faced facts. Even with a vampire on stand-by, one gal can only kick so many asses.

For help, she must put her faith in others. A human, who might just be the one. A demon, who will, for a price, open the doors to her heritage. And a werewolf, who wants to protect her from herself.

Torn between these men, Ivy must tread carefully, because one wants her heart, one wants her body, and one wants her dead.
