I’ve read the first book, A Human Element. It was fantastic and I’ve been waiting a while for A Hidden Element.

I can say it was worth the wait and I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts with you soon.

The Rain

Rain Trilogy #1

by Joseph A. Turkot

20694827

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My 56

I wonder if there are more out there. It’s like Dusty senses my thoughts though, and he tells me they’ve set an extra watch tonight, but there shouldn’t be any more attacks. I fix on his face, studying it, the curve of his chin, and his lips, and his eyes that look like they’re feeding on me. I think of Rochester, and Russell’s warning, and I realize how right he is. We don’t know anyone here. But even when I’m looking for it, I don’t feel any malice in Dusty or in Marvolo. I’m torn.

~~~~
Synopsis
There are a lot of stories about how the rain started.
The thing that always comes to mind first isn’t the how though, it’s the how much. Russell still does the math too: 15, 5,400, and 8,550. 15 inches a day, 5,400 a year, and 8,550 feet since the start.
We have no idea if it’s accurate. But it’s important to think about it, he says, because it reminds us to keep moving. I’m Tanner. Russell plucked me from the rain when I was two.
Fourteen years ago we left Philadelphia. As the water rose, we moved west, hoping the elevation would keep us warm and dry. Pittsburg, Indianapolis, Sioux Falls, Rapid City. Now we’re stranded on the islands in Wyoming. Russell thinks they used to be the Bighorn mountains. But we can’t go back now. There’s no warm and there’s no dry anymore. Just a rumor about a place where it isn’t raining. So we’re going to try to make it—520 miles south to Leadville. But we can’t drift east, the Great Plains have become waterspout alley, a raging tomb of moving water.
Together we push on, surviving, heading to Leadville. But something is wrong with him now. He says it’s nothing. But his breathing doesn’t sound that way.
Exposure, pruned hands, and infection. But since Rapid City, it’s the face eaters too. And the crack in the canoe that’s growing. And the ice I think I see on the water. Russell thinks it’s my imagination.
We cling to the last strips of the veneer. And each other.
~~~

I couldn’t imagine trying to live in a world of wet, of rain, of moisture and more moisture.

I like a rainy day now and then. I can put off the outdoor chores, curl up with a good book, and not feel guilty about it. LOL

But the sun had better come back out soon. I need those rays, the brightness, the heat on my skin.

I have a feeling by the time I finish this book, these poor people will still not see the sun, whether dead or alive.

October is here and it’s going to go dark on fuonlyknew.

I have so many scary books to tell you about this month.

The Abyss Above Us

Book #1

by Ryan Notch

20256219

66d2d-addtogoodreadsblack

My 56

The wall fell out and there it was, the door behind the wall. All at once Shaw was no longer hot. His sweat quickly turned to such intense chills that he thought he might see his breath when he exhaled.

The thought came unbidden to him, Oh my God, what have I done?

~~~
Synopsis
There is a place in the sky where there are no stars, no matter how deeply the astronomers gaze into it. Atop a lonely mountain stands a mighty telescope that turns towards the coordinates of this abyss nightly, as if drawn to it. Receiving its commands from a computer that hasn’t existed for twenty years.
Introverted network engineer Shaw is brought in to find out why.
All too soon he finds that while the night sky may be dark, it is not silent. A signal is coming from those coordinates. Creating a sound liquid and hypnotic with layers of data that suggest anything but randomness. A siren’s song that leads to horrific suicides in everyone who listens to it.
By the time Shaw realizes this, it’s too late to stop the signal he sent back into the night. A signal obviously received, for the abyss has begun to move.
And it’s moving towards us.
~~~

I picked this up as a free download from Amazon. The cover art and blurb were interesting. When I first started reading it I didn’t think it was going to be very scary.

Then it started to affect my sleep. You know how you are almost asleep and you’re startled awake because you feel like you’re falling? That happened to me after reading this. Once I was awake again, the book crept into my head. This happened several times and it happened the next night too. I have only a little bit left to read, but I’m setting it aside until the weekend when I can read it during the day. I don’t know what it is, but something is creeping me out here.

The Cinderella Theorem

The Lily Sparrow Chronicles

by Kristee Ravan

66d2d-addtogoodreadsblack

My 56

Page 5

 “Oh! Fiddlesticks! I did it again! Matt’s going to kill me. I do fine for fifteen years and blow it on the last day.

Page 6

 “Now, I need to work on getting the prince to fall in love with the princess, and you should probably get your homework done before dinner. I’m sure you’re going to have a lot to talk about with your dad.” She turned  to go back to the office.

Are you kidding me? That’s the end of the conversation?

~~~
Synopsis
Fairy tales are naturally non-mathematical. That is a fact, and fifteen-year-old Lily Sparrow loves factual, mathematical logic. So when her mother confesses that Lily’s deceased father is (a) not dead, (b) coming to dinner, and (c) the ruler of a fairy tale kingdom accessible through the upstairs bathtub, Lily clings to her math to help her make sense of this new double life (1 life in the real world + 1 secret life in the fairy tale world = a double life).
Even though it’s not mathematical, Lily finds herself being pulled into a mystery involving an unhappy Cinderella, a greasy sycophant called Levi, and a slew of vanishing fairy tale characters. Racing against the clock, with a sound mathematical plan, Lily attempts to save her fairy tale friends while proving that normality = happiness.
~~~

Since I used pages 5 and 6 for my 56 post, I couldn’t help but become curious about what was really happening. So I went back to the beginning and started reading.

I’m now about one third through the book and smiling a lot!

Eating Sarah

by Jaret Martens

20555231

66d2d-addtogoodreadsblack

My 56

To save myself, I would have to sacrifice him.

~~~
Synopsis
Ever since childhood, all Sarah wanted was to participate in the Hunt—a monthly ritual in which her people sneak into a nearby city to gather food. Only in Sarah’s world, that food is human.
After her first Hunt ends in catastrophe, Sarah is forced to prepare their captives for slaughter. While this once would have been an easy task, recent events have caused Sarah to question whether or not she’s still capable of murder. Worse, she finds herself caring for Troy: a captive she knows she will be forced to kill.
But she can’t leave. Doing so would mean the deaths of both Troy and her family. With cannibals turning up dead—and suspicions of mutiny rising—Sarah and her family must be more careful than ever.
Yet there’s something not quite right about her family . . . Something that might just get her killed.
~~~

This is such an odd story. Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving it. It’s just I’m liking these cannibals, a lot!

Who woulda thunk it? LOL

“I saw an e-mail from Paige. What the hell is going on with that cruise? Someone was killed? We need to get them off that ship!”

“Calm down, DeeAnn,” Annie said. She pictured DeeAnn’s face red with worry.

“They are on a ship with a killer,” Dee Ann said. “And guess what? I just saw a weather report that one of those freaky storms is heading for the Mexican coast. Right where they are supposed to be in two days.”

~~~
I admit it. I’m a cozy mystery addict. The quirky titles and colorful cover art are irresistable for me.
I received a print copy of this ARC for my review which you can read on October 14th.
“It’s really quiet in here. Whatcha been doing?” Jack queried.
“Not much.” The deathly silence in the house suddenly felt all encompassing, as if she were about to be eaten alive by tranquility.
The silence became unbearably awkward as they stood there in her foyer a little self consciously. Why was he here? Just because he wanted to eat cookies together?
I couldn’t find a good quote on page 56 so I went to page 156 and found this.
I stared at myself in the mirror.
My nose was back to normal; the only remnant of my two black eyes was a slight yellow shading across one brow bone. I could use Ian’s balm, but I didn’t want to. For all I knew, the stuff was an aphrodisiac or some kind of lust potion, which would explain my hopping into bed with him so easily.
“It couldn’t just be that you were horny and he’s hot”? I asked the woman in the mirror.
She gave me the finger.
I shuddered violently and reached for the handle to close the door. As if I had suddenly cut myself, my hand recoiled, and I sucked in a sharp breath.
The handle was wet and it wasn’t raining…
I noticed for the first time, just how many windows faced the porch. Many. Too Many. “Why didn’t we ever get blinds?”
I reached for the remote. I was going to watch my vampire show, damn it.
I had my shit together. Then my pocket buzzed, and I skyrocketed off the couch.
Waking the Merrow
by Heather Rigney
21519284
1771e-addtogoodreadsblack
Synopsis
In 1772, angry Rhode Island colonists set fire to a British ship, sparking the American Revolution. Taxation without representation was a motivator. So was the vengeful, man-eating mermaid who had it out for the commanding officer.
That was then. This is now.
Mermaids, or merrow, still hunt in Narragansett Bay, but these days they keep a lower profile.
At night, centuries-old Nomia seduces smutty frat boys, lures them into icy waters, and feeds them to her voracious kin. By day, she and her half-breed daughter attempt to blend in at the coastal Village Playground.
But Nomia slips up. She makes a friend. Then she makes that friend disappear, and someone notices.
Thirty-something Evie McFagan just wants to make it through working motherhood. But she’s a blistering stew of issues—snarky alcoholic and a friendless funeral director who just witnessed Nomia dismembering a guy at the nearby yacht club.
When Evie believes a mermaid stole her baby, who will help? The merrow of Ireland? Or maybe anti-hero Evie will surprise everyone, including herself, and summon the strength to save her own family.
Intertwining the stories of two primordial families with the colonial history of Narragansett Bay,  Waking the Merrow is a dark historical fantasy.
Bones: The Complete Apocalypse Saga
by  Mark Wheaton
1771e-addtogoodreadsblack
Synopsis
When mankind is visited by Three Great Apocalypses, the only thing standing in their way is a feckless but loyal, easily distracted yet occasionally ferocious German shepherd named Bones, a one-time cadaver dog with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police. This is his amazing story.
In Bones, our hero must battle a plague of dangerous parasites that brings the dead back to life with the goal of destroying the planet. Shepherd finds Bones delivered to earthquake-devastated Los Angeles to hunt for survivors only to run afoul of armies of rage-driven rats and birds emerging from the rubble. And when mankind reaches its final hour and a pocket of surviving Indians are all that’s left of humanity, it falls on Bones to save the species before civilization is wiped out forever in Alpha.
Three Apocalyptic novellas of nature run amok, three interwoven stories that feature a German shepherd at the center of the things, three stories with so much action you might just explode reading them.
Includes prequel short story, Mongrel.
