Interview with Author Nina Soden
.
  • If you could spend time with a character from your book, whom would it be and what would you do during the day?
  • I would probably pick Kim. She is this down-to-earth clothing designer who just likes to enjoy life. I would probably go to the beach during the day and then hit the bar in the evening.
  • How did you come up with the name of your book?
  • The Beast Within is actually the name of an article or story that one of the characters is writing. There is a serial killer loose, and Sophie is a journalist… or wants to be. She is working on a story about the killer.
  • What is your favorite part of this book and why?
  • There are two things, first is the structure. It is an interactive novel, which means the reader has to engage in the story other than just reading. I love the idea of bringing the reader into the story and giving them a purpose. The second thing is the inner struggle the main character, Austin, is going through. I can’t really explain because I don’t want to give to much away, but his desperation for survival and his humanity don’t always agree.
  • Tell us about your main character, Austin, what makes him tick?
  • That is simple, blood. Austin is a fey who survives off of animal and human blood.
  • Is there anything specific you want to tell your readers?
  • Thank you. As an author, readers are everything. I appreciate all of my readers, whether they read all of my books or just one. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I hope you enjoy THE BEAST WITHIN as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Nina has always been creative, be it art, theatre, film – anything but singing – you don’t want to hear that! She earned her bachelor’s degree in Theatre and Military Science from Eastern Michigan University where she spent most of her time either on stage, rappelling down buildings, or working one of three jobs. After college she moved to Los Angeles, like so many other actors, in pursuit of her dreams. Nina started writing short stories in 2008. Since then, her dreams have gotten bigger and she likes to think her storytelling ability has gotten better. She has done everything from secretarial work to business development to being the Director of a private preschool. She has fired a M16 machine gun, jumped out of a C130 aircraft, and given birth – TWICE – but she always returns to her art.
She has two completed series available; The Blood Angel Series (Awaken, Beginnings, Revenge, and Pursuit) and the SECTOR C Series (The Chosen, The Hunted, and The Bridge). Her latest novel, an interactive urban fantasy novel, The Beast Within, is a standalone story with eleven (11) possible endings and twenty-six (26) opportunities for the reader to try and change the story. The Beast Within is currently available for pre-order on Amazon and will be available for purchase on March 1, 2021.
Though she’ll forever be a Michigan girl at heart, she now lives in the south with her husband and two beautiful children. If she’s not working on her latest story, you can find her lounging with a good book, playing with her kids, or indulging in her unhealthy addiction to Starbucks coffee.

From page 56 in the paperback.

“Just out of curiosity, how much of that strength of yours is muscle and how much is magic?”

“Drop by the gym some day and find out.”

I grinned at her. “Is that a challenge?”

Synopsis

With his talent for divining the future, Alex Verus should have foreseen his friends’ reactions to the revelations about his previous life. Anne Walker no longer trusts him—and has also cut all ties with the mage community after getting kicked out of the apprentice program. As a favor to Luna, Alex’s own apprentice and Anne’s best friend, he checks in on her only to be told to leave her alone.

Then Anne gets kidnapped. The Council Keepers of the Order of the Star believe Dark mages from her past may be involved. Working with the Keepers, Alex and Luna discover that Anne has been taken into the shadow realm of Sagash, her former Dark mage mentor, and they must find a way to rescue her.

But another shadow from the past has resurfaced—Alex’s former master may be back in London, and Alex has no idea what his agenda is…

Genre: Urban Fantasy

From page 56 in the paperback.

“No,” Will said again. He flicked the sword and I saw drops of liquid – my blood – fly away. “We finish it.” He turned back towards me, meeting my eye. His face was set and cold, and in a sudden flash of insight I knew it was the same expression I’d worn in the past, when I made the decision to kill. Will took a step forward.

~~~~~
Synopsis
I don’t publicly advertise that I’m a mage, but I don’t exactly hide it either, and one of the odd things I’ve learnt over the years is just how much you can get away with if you’re blatant enough. Hide something behind smoke and mirrors and make people work to find it, and they’ll tear the place down looking for what’s there.
Alex Verus is a diviner who can see probable futures—a talent that’s gotten him out of many a tough scrape. But this time, he may be in over his head. Alex was once apprenticed to a Dark mage, and in his service he did a lot of things he isn’t proud of.
As rumors swirl that his old master is coming back, Alex comes face to face with his misdeeds in the form of a young adept whose only goal is to get revenge. Alex has changed his life for the better, but he’s afraid of what his friends—including his apprentice, Luna—will think of his past. But if they’re going to put themselves at risk, they need to know exactly what kind of man they’re fighting for…
Enjoy this peek inside:
“Thomas warned me about this, you know,” Bastian began, his voice pitched low, his booted feet striding close but not piercing my bubble.
I kept my gaze latched onto his feet and refused to look up. If I caught sight of his neck, of his blood pulsing in that lovely vein, I’d lose it. I wasn’t hungry yet and I wanted to keep it that way.
I cleared my throat, an action that took far too much effort and hurt for some reason. My throat was dry. Why was it so dry? “Warned you about what?”
“He said that, in time, I would want to be bitten. That the thought of you hungry or in pain would make me want to serve myself up so you didn’t suffer. That it was dangerous and blissful and would likely cause you to leave us.”
His feet moved closer, piercing my bubble. The heat of him washed over me, even though he was a few feet away.
I shook my head, which I instantly regretted because blood loss was a thing and I was losing a lot of it, the healing process taking far too long. Booth must have hit an artery.
“I don’t want to be tied to anyone. I don’t want a home. I don’t want friends.” It was a lie—a whole mountain of lies—but it was the truth, too. I didn’t want a tie to someone who was going to leave me. I didn’t want a home if I was going to lose it. I didn’t want friends that would die on me.
“Too bad.”
Witches Protection Program
by Michael Okon
Genre: YA Urban Fantasy
.
~~~~~
.
MY REVIEW
.

Poor Wes. He’s failed again and now he’s been given one last chance to prove himself qualified to be in law enforcement. He’s sure it’s a prank when he’s assigned to the Witches Protection Program.

It’s no hoax. But it takes some convincing for Wes to believe in witches. He gets it in spades.

His first assignment, protect a witch, heiress Morgan Pendragon, from her evil aunt. Her aunt is cooking up a diabolical scheme to rule the world.

Wes will have to catch on quick if he’s to save Morgan and himself from a witches brew of trouble.

This was a fun story with some likable and not so likable characters. Got to take the good with the bad.

Wes is a pain in the beginning. Then he finds his place and becomes someone to cheer for.

Morgan is a reluctant witch, wanting nothing to do with her aunt or the other witches and their schemes. They’re not going to give her a choice though.

There’s some cool weapons, compelling characters, and a showdown at the end that I wish I could see for myself. Just imagine the pile-up when drivers look up and see witches flying in the sky.

I like a good witch, but I have a thing for the bad ones too. There’s one, Morgan’s aunt, who will chill you to the bone. Too powerful for anyone’s good.

Grab a broomstick and hang on tight. It’s a bumpy ride.

4 Stars

Wes Rockville, a disgraced law-enforcement agent, gets one last chance to prove himself and save his career when he’s reassigned to a 232-year-old secret government organization.
The Witches Protection Program.
His first assignment: uncover a billion-dollar cosmetics company’s diabolical plan to use witchcraft for global domination, while protecting its heiress Morgan Pendragon from her aunt’s evil deeds. Reluctantly paired with veteran witch protector, Alastair Verne, Wes must learn to believe in witches…and believe in himself.
Filled with adventure and suspense, Michael Okon creates a rousing, tongue-in-cheek alternate reality where witches cast spells and wreak havoc in modern-day New York City.

Monsters don’t exist. Wrong.
The nightmarish spectrum world is just my
imagination. Wrong.
In a few months, I’ll finally be free. Wrong.
It takes being dragged to a secret training
academy in the mountains to unravel the truth. My captors–an elite race of

Steel takes a determined step toward me. His hair is
ruffled, his clothes covered in dirt and wet from the ice and snow, his hands
balled into fists. Even without a weapon, he’s a fierce sight to behold. With
golden light kissing his features, he reminds me of a modern-day Apollo,
dressed in a Henley and dark washed jeans.
“It’s you.” His whispered words full of awe and float to me
on a rippling band of light.
I begin to ask what he means, but I catch a sliver of
movement to my left and turn my head in time to see both Forsaken disappear
around the bend of the building.
Instinct says to follow them, but when I take a step in
their direction I’m thwarted by a six-foot-five, raven-haired angel-born.
“They’re going to—” My words die a quick death on my tongue
when Steel’s hand brushes a tangle of hair away from my cheek. The small
contact causes a tremor to work its way through his body.
He closes his eyes and steps into me.
I retreat a step.
“Finally,” he breathes, dipping his head to gently rub the
tip of his nose up the column of my neck before his lips just barely brush my
earlobe.
It’s my turn to shiver.
What is he doing?
my mind screams. And do I care? it
whispers as an afterthought.
Shaking my head out of a confused fog, I take another shaky
step back.
Yes, I do care. The boy must have hit his head harder than I
thought.
“Listen, Steel, we don’t have time for this. You’re not
yourself right now.”
I bring my hands up to push him back. He’s invading my
space—big time.
When I reach forward to give him a shove, he grabs hold of
my wrists and uses my momentum to bring me closer.
The guy has moves, that’s for sure.
One look in his eyes and I can tell he’s not all there. His
lids are lowered to half-mast and his gaze sweeps lazily over my features.
 Steel takes a step
forward, forcing my capitulation until he’s maneuvered me against the rough
bricks. A foreign sensation zips along my spine, as if something heavy is fused
to each vertebrae, weighing me down. I don’t have a chance to investigate
because Steel’s head is dipping again and I have nowhere to move within the
cage of his body.
I freeze, wholly unprepared for the situation. That gives
Steel the perfect opportunity to dive in and take what he wants.

Synopsis
.
Patience has lived a hard and lonely
life on the Reservation in the Upper Northwest. Her father’s a drunk and
abusive, and her mother tolerates it. Patience does not. Her best friend is now
married to a college professor with a son their age, Saul Reardon. He could be
her ticket to a new life. Ifan is a young man, her friend, with plans of being
a doctor and returning to his people providing the care they need. He also
loves Patience. Patience is tugged between the two men. Until Little Sister, a
wolf, bonds with her, an ancient rite, narrowing her choices. Now bound to her
people and to the land, she must come to terms with it. Add in her father’s
recovery from alcoholism, his need for her forgiveness, and his desire for
reconciliation, her life has tumbled into chaos. Unknown to her and her
friends, an ancient evil is on its way. It must be stopped. Who will survive
the deadly creature bearing down on them?

Exclusive Excerpt!

Eight-year-old Patience
crouched far from her bedroom door, fingers tight in her ears, muffling the
ugly alcohol-slurred words, but not the sounds. Words heard many times
before—lazy cunt, whoring bitch, where’s my money—all punctuated with the sound
of her father’s hands on her mother’s flesh. Patience scrambled out from under
the bed, her thin nightgown not much protection from the cold or her father’s
drunken gaze. Chin up, brown eyes dark pebbles in her stark white face, bitter
courage in the set of her mouth, Patience spoke slow and careful, drawing his
eyes to her. “Dad, I’m here. Let Mom go. I’ll go with you.”

The Chosen
Sector C Volume 1
by Nina Soden
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Set in a futuristic dystopian where society is governed by a council of vampires and lycanthropes, selection students are sheltered and raised in a deceptively utopian world. Strict rules are imposed to control population growth, education, and even personal interactions with other members of the Sector, all in the name of safety. When ‘A’ comes of age, she like all youth throughout Sector C and her selection classmates aren’t sent out into the world to find jobs, make money and lead happy carefree lives. They are forced to endure the rigorous physical and mental testing of Selection Week before choosing their destiny or being forced into a fate far worse. Those that make it out alive are announced as sector residence, given a position within the society, and allotted all the privileges of their chosen “culture.” However, when your only choices are vampirism, lycanthropy, breeder, blood donor, or banishment to the Wastelands, what choice do you really have? Suspenseful, intense, passionate, and awash in paranormal delights, Sector C captures the enchantment and mysteries of the supernatural world and the power of friendship.
.
The Hunted
Sector C Volume 2
In the future, most of the world is governed by a council of vampires and lycanthropes. Sector residents are offered the freedom to live as they desire provided they stay and abide by the laws handed down. After being jolted awake by the blaring screech of the sector alarm, Zelina is dragged from her bed, gagged, and tied to a chair. Confronted with the brutal murder of one of her former classmates, she realizes that all eyes are on her as the primary suspect. Whether she was involved or not doesn’t matter. In the eyes of most sector residents, and most Council Members, Zelina is already a pariah—feared for the powers she will certainly come to possess. For she is the first human known to have both vampire and lycanthrope blood flowing through her veins. Zelina will find herself on a gripping adventure that will take her beyond the borders she’s known all her life in an attempt to save those she loves—and herself from becoming The Hunted.
.
The Bridge
Sector C Volume 3
Change is happening all around Zelina and with it a prophesy is revealed. Is Zelina the key to unlocking a new way of existing on earth? What will she do when she discovers the true monsters of Sector C – the darkness that feeds off of the fear and the unknowing. Will she be able to suspend her own disbelief about what is possible and secure a new future? With the help of Merick, a motley crew of defectors, and a host of unexpected allies, Zelina bridges space and time in an attempt to bring forth a new future for all sentient beings. Join Zelina, Merick, and the others as they discover the power of the prophesy and their parts in setting their stagnant world free.

Reaper Unexpected

by Debbie Cassidy

(Deadside Reapers #1)
Publication date: March 26th 2020
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Urban Fantasy

Synopsis

Your dead are our business.

Got a loved one who’s passed? Want to ask your dead aunt where she hid that elusive will? Head over to Necro city and look no further than Soul Savers Inc.

One day the world was normal, and the next, it was filled with ghosts. And then the reapers came. Blood-sucking hot dudes with wings and wicked scythes.  They took control, and now we have a system.

Now we have Necro city, the hub of all things untethered.

As a soul relocation agent, it’s my job to rehouse the dead until the reapers come to collect, but with so few of those dudes about, the wait isn’t pretty. Thank goodness for decent coffee, frosted donuts, and a pending promotion.

Things are looking good until they’re not.

One bar fight and a dead reaper later, I’m left holding the scythe.

Not just any scythe, but a scythe belonging to one of Lilith’s four favored sons—the most powerful reapers in the world.

For some reason, it’s chosen me.

Now, three very large, very pissed off reapers are on my case.

It looks like that promotion is going to have to wait.

A kickass Urban fantasy with a why choose romance. Vampires, ghosts, angels, and demons. Perfect for readers who enjoy forbidden romance, enemies to lovers, or friends to lovers.

Of Flame and Fury

.

.

Taran Wird, the loudmouth mistress of flame and lightning, didn’t want to attend the formal gathering of the supernatural elite. She did so only to help to unite the supreme beings in attendance in one common goal: protecting Taran’s sister, Celia.

Celia is pregnant with alpha werewolf Aric Connor’s child, the same child prophesized to save the world from uprising evil. Evil wants this child dead before he is born and, more importantly, before he can grow strong enough to stop it.

Taran and her werewolf lover, Gemini, put plans in place to protect Celia. Master Vampire Misha Aleksandr and his clan also swear their allegiance to Celia and vow to keep her from harm. The witches even cast protection spells around the manor to curse anyone with malintent who enters. Nothing was supposed to go wrong, except everything did.

Creatures that shouldn’t exist stalk the grounds and invade the premises, and every curse meant to shield the guests turns against them. No one counted on the powerful being who arrived uninvited. But he’s here, manipulating the magic enclosing the estate to work in his favor.

As body counts rise and allies become enemies, chances are Celia won’t survive the night. But evil never counted on how hard Taran Wird would fight, even at the expense of her life.

I hurry in the direction Emme disappeared and find myself in another dark hall. Bren follows, his large feet stomping behind me. He’s worked up and so is Emme. God, I hate it, and hate the wedge it’s driving between us even more. Emme used to tell us everything, in her own quiet, shy way. Now, she’s so tight-lipped, I couldn’t pry her mouth open with a crowbar. I may end up talking to Bren. Maybe he’ll be the one to crack.
“Emme,” I call out. I frown when she appears to flutter further away from me. “Emme. Emme. Wait!”
She rounds a corner and disappears into yet another hall. I pick up my pace, passing a library and a small meeting room, only for my steps to falter when the lights dim.
I turn around, the rooms we passed are gone, leaving only a long corridor of dark paneling. Everything feels off and I can no longer hear the gentle strut of Emme’s feet. “Bren?” I say.
“I don’t know,” he replies. “Come on, let’s find Emme.”
I double back and into a wall.
“What the fuck?” Bren snaps.
The hall narrows, appearing endless, the darkness swallowing what used to be the way out.
Bren’s head jerks up. “Did you hear that?”
“I don’t hear anything,” I respond slowly.
The clanging sounds from the kitchen and distant murmurs from the reception are gone. It’s just me and Bren and our increasing breaths.
“What do you hear?” I ask, keeping my voice low.
He closes his eyes, listening hard, the rise and fall of his chest growing more pronounced.
A light whisper of wind rustles from the darkness, intensifying into a pained moan as it reaches us.
“Aw, hell,” Bren says. “Stay with me, okay?”
“Ah, sure,” I say, trying to remain calm and more than failing. I turn in the direction I thought I last saw Emme. “Do you think the spells are surging now that Celia has arrived? They’re meant to keep her safe. Maybe they’re reacting to her presence.”
I whip around. The wall is gone.
So is Bren.
I inch backward, my actions dimming the lights further. My right arm shoots up, lighting up like a torch and sparing me from the blackness encasing me.
My arm lowers at the sound of splintering wood. I jump at the sight of long streaks of blood that weren’t there before.
Blood is never a good sign. It leads from bad to worse every damn time. Most would run at the sight of streaking blood. Me, being me, and knowing there’s no other escape, follows the streaks as they expand into a widening pool.
My light strobes in and out, in tune with my accelerating heart rate. The horrible silence returns, adding an extra coat of eerie. Don’t be afraid. It doesn’t last. The moans resume in another few steps, loud enough to muffle my rattling teeth.
It’s cold here, similar to the chill that accompanies death and the presence of spirits who want to make you one of them.
I reach another wall. The end. I release a breath, cursing when more moans course through the narrowing space, these much closer.
Carefully, I turn around, stopping dead when the streaks of blood move and form letters.
N-Y-T-E-S…
My light shakes from my violent trembles.
A-R-E…
The letters darken as the blood dries and cakes the wooden floors.
C-O-M-I-N-G
I jolt when something crashes on the level above. I don’t wait for more of this twisted spelling bee. I take off in a sprint, shaking might right hand. “Get us to Celia,” I tell it.
I stop abruptly and just miss crashing into a wall that appears. I shake my arm harder. I don’t typically order Sparky to do anything. I can’t. As connected as we are, she’s practically a living entity with her own set of rules I’ve yet to figure out.
“Come on, girl,” I insist. “Celia needs us.”
More by instinct than anything Sparky does, I spin, almost screaming when I see a new set of words have formed along the wall.
