 My Review

Alan and Jonas are brothers, orphans. They have only each other. They’re also Lucid Dreamers, able to move in dream worlds. When an accident lands Alan in a coma, Jonas must enter the dream world to find his brother and wake him up.

He’ll have to face a monstrous creature, his very own Night Terror, and REM, an evil being bent on entering the real world.

I enjoyed the names of some of the beings. Night Terrors and REM (rapid eye movement) are both sleep conditions and great choices. Caused some “I see” moments for me.

Jonas starts out fumbling in the dream world but catches on quick. Thrown into dangerous situations, he adapts. Save his brother, the girl he loves, the dream walkers, and the world, a heavy burden rests on his young shoulders.

At first glance the cover looks creepy. Take another look. See all of those images. I give five stars on the cover alone. So creative.

Action galore. It never slows down. Between the dream world and the waking one, you are pulled along at a face pace.

It feels a bit sci-fi, a bit horror, a bit action and adventure, and all thrilling. I can honestly say this story is something totally new for me. Not even sure how to tag it.

I have the hard cover edition and it is awesome. The cover art leaps out at you and the book comes with a music CD. I listened to it while reading and it really lent atmosphere and excitement.

A great collaboration brings you an amazing reading experience.

I love this cover because it reflects the book so well. The image of a girl standing alone on a desolate world is a perfect depiction of my protagonist, Ann, as well as her “sand over stone” world, Eco. But it’s also symbolic, because although Ann isn’t really alone, she often feels isolated on her frontier planet. The addition of the image of the Earth is also appropriately symbolic. Ann can’t actually see the Earth from Eco, but since her goal is to live on Earth it’s always on her mind, so the inclusion of the Earth image is a wonderful metaphor for her hopes and dreams.

Haddie pauses at the door before holding it open for me. “After you.”
Shouting erupts from across the parking lot. Four-letter expletives fill the air. The guy, the one whose car I stole, is walking toward me in handcuffs and a police escort.
They work quickly around here.
“You little bitch,” he snarls as he passes me. “What did you tell them? What?”
I grin and toss my head back, letting a laugh tumble out of me. “Have fun in there,” I say. “It’s a swell place.”
Haddie places her hand on my arm. “Really, Livie. Do you need to take it to that level?”
“What level?” I say, batting my eyelashes. “He tried to make me a felon. Only fair he gets a little of the action himself.”
Haddie bites her lip and leads me over to a Toyota Camry. I would have pegged her more as a VW Bug kind of chick, being round and oh-so-jolly like her, but I guess plain and boring is about the same thing.
A flash of cherry red catches my eye, and I spy the BMW convertible in the impound lot. Too bad it’s locked up. Driving it was a million orgasms worth of fun. I shut my eyes and remember Jax standing up in the passenger seat, his hair blowing in the wind, as I sped down the freeway.
Oh, Jax. Why, why, why did you have to die?
“Where would you like to go?” Haddie says with the most Goddamn sincere voice I’ve ever heard. It’s like she has a zillion girl scouts living in her pudgy body.
“Jax’s. I need to pick up some things.” Like all of my Louis Vuitton bags, my Hermes scarves, and of course, my Chanel everything.
She sits in the driver seat and tilts her head. “And that would be where?”
“39 Cherrywood Drive.”
Haddie slowly backs out of the parking space, and the car crawls toward the exit. “Can’t you make this thing go any faster?”
“Like the BMW you stole?”
How did she know that? “I didn’t steal it. That guy gave it to me in exchange for…favors.”
“So you’re claiming prostitution?” Haddie says with a smirk. “Nicely done.”
“That man knows what he did. He knows I didn’t steal the car.” I force my jaw together to keep any more information from spilling out.
“Really? Then why did they impound it?”
I shrug. “Don’t know.”
“It is interesting that they’d impound your car when you’re claiming prostitution.” We’re at a stoplight, and she turns her head to look at me. “But it must not be too bad if they let you off without bail.”
That surprised me too. Ruiz had mentioned bail, but they let me walk out on my own accord. I keep my mouth sewn shut.
Haddie must notice how hard I’m trying to keep it together because she laughs. “Not everyone is buying the prostitution story, Livie.” She signals and turns the corner. Jesus, can’t she go faster? “I know you stole that car, and I’m pretty sure Regina Walker knows too.”
Cool sweat pricks at the back of my neck. Who was this girl? And how does she know so much about me?

This is the story ripped from the headlines about a young person who dies tragically through no fault of their own. Unfortunately we read these stories nearly every day in the newspaper or see them on TV. The kind of young person you hear has died and you find yourself thinking, What a shame. They had so much going for them, such a promising future. Why did that have to happen? For this reason, this book was the book of my heart. I wanted it to be as realistic a story as possible of what it might be like to die tragically and be trapped in the afterlife as a ghost. Let’s face it, we all have to die and none of us can say with certainty what happens when we do. It’s the biggest fear of the unknown there is! Oh, we may think we know, or may have certain beliefs about what might happen, but what if it doesn’t happen that way? What if you are suddenly and unfairly taken from this life and now you’re stuck and don’t know why? How angry would you be? What would you do? How much would you begin to question all you’ve ever believed in? It won’t be completely apparent until later in the series, but I wanted it to be a story of great hope for anyone who has tragically lost someone they love, especially someone young.

The setting for most of the story was inspired by The Angel of the Sea, an award-winning bed and breakfast in Cape May, NJ. This spectacular inn has been featured on several television programs and in magazines throughout the world. Most notably, it was chosen by Oprah Winfrey as one of the “Best Vacations in the World” and included in her television talk show. The Angel of the Sea is one of the most recognized Victorian structures in the United States. Legend has it that in the late 1960’s, a girl did fall to her death at the Angel of the Sea and did at one time, haunt the inn. The story of the girl has been included in several non-fiction books about ghosts in Cape May. Sarah’s character in THE GHOST CHRONICLES was inspired by this legend. I’ve become fascinated by zombies and apocalyptic stories. I love The Walking Dead and the show has helped me to visualize lots of scenes. From funny to gruesome.

The author yanks you right into the apocalypse. Barely time to breath before they are everywhere.

While I love the zombies, what really grabbed me in this story was the group dynamics. Ever seen the movie The Postman with Kevin Costner?

Similar to the movie, you have opposite sides on the apocalypse. Those who want to help others and those who want to use others to save themselves. It comes as no surprise that some people choose to force their will on others, even to the point of killing.

Krista lost her parents to the zombies and was out there alone. When she does find a safe haven, she feels lucky, even though she’s assigned a job as a maid to one of the top governing families. Anything is better than being out there, right? And the zombies don’t like the humidity and heat of the south, so there aren’t many around.

She can’t believe her luck when she finds she has a living relative. He’s an officer in the military, if you can call it that anymore, and she jumps at a chance to go with him and fight for her new world.
.
This is where the dynamics come in. Either place might have been safe for a while. But with leaders who are looking out for themselves first, trying to lord it over everyone else, and practically relegating them to slaves, there’s bound to be some discontent. And sooner or later something has to give.

There’s plenty of zombie action and intrigue to keep the story moving quickly. Genuine characters that you’ll like or loath. And a satisfying ending. Not that it’s really the end. The author wraps up this chapter, but from the conclusion, I figure there will be more stories to come. I sure hope so.
