He knows the risks: as the renegade son of the Tribunal’s vicious leader, Will’s capture could doom the resistance.

ABSOLUTION

The Penton Legacy, Book 2

By Susannah Sandlin

Release date: October 9, 2012

Publisher: Montlake Romance

Book Description:

With the vampire world on the brink of civil war over the scarcity of untainted human blood, battle lines are being drawn between the once peaceful vampire and human enclave of Penton, Alabama, and the powerful Vampire Tribunal.

A Scottish gallowglass warrior turned vampire in the early 17th century, Mirren Kincaid once served the Tribunal as its most creative and ruthless executioner—a time when he was known as the Slayer. But when assigned a killing he found questionable, Mirren abandoned the Tribunal’s political machinations and disappeared—only to resurface two centuries later as the protector and second-in-command of Penton. Now the Tribunal wants him back on their side—or dead.

To break their rogue agent, they capture Glory Cummings, the descendant of a shaman, and send her to restore Mirren’s bloodthirsty nature. But instead of a monster, Glory sees a man burdened by the weight of his past. Could her magic touch—meant by the tribunal to bring out a violent killer—actually help Mirren break his bonds and discover the love he doesn’t believe he deserves?

It’s a town under siege, a powerful warrior in a battle with his past, and one woman who can make the earth move—literally—as the Penton Legacy continues.

REDEMPTION

Book One Penton Legacy series

By Susannah Sandlin

Following a worldwide pandemic whose vaccine left human blood deadly to vampires, the vampire community is on the verge of starvation and panic. Some have fanned into rural areas, where the vaccine was less prevalent, and are taking unsuspecting humans as blood slaves. Others are simply starving, which for a vampire is worse than death—a raging hunger in a creature too weak to feed.

Immune to these struggles—at first—is Penton, a tiny community in rural Chambers County, Alabama, an abandoned cotton mill town that has been repopulated by charismatic vampire Aidan Murphy, his scathe of 50 vampires, and their willingly bonded humans. Aidan has recruited his people carefully, believing in a peaceful community where the humans are respected and the vampires retain a bit of their humanity.
But an unresolved family feud and the paranoia of the Vampire Tribunal descend on Penton in the form of Aidan’s brother, Owen Murphy. Owen has been issued a death warrant that can only be commuted if he destroys Penton—and Aidan, against whom he’s held a grudge since both were turned vampire in 17th-century Ireland.  Owen begins a systematic attack on the town, first killing its doctor, then attacking one of Aidan’s own human familiars
To protect his people, Aidan is forced to go against his principles and kidnap an unvaccinated human doctor—and finds himself falling in love for the first time since the death of his wife in Ireland centuries ago.

Dr. Krystal Harris, forced into a world she never knew existed, must face up to her own abusive past to learn if the feelings she’s developing for her kidnapper are real—or just a warped, supernatural kind of Stockholm Syndrome in which she’s allowing herself to become a victim yet again.

Susannah Sandlin’s REDEMPTION is the first in the Penton Legacy series. Book two, ABSOLUTION, will be out September 18, and book three, OMEGA, on December 18.

Penton, Alabama: Ghost Towns and Vampires

 Susannah Sandlin

In the Penton Legacy series, the vampire scathe of “pacifist warrior” Aidan Murphy, a 400-year-old Irish master vampire, lives in an old Alabama cotton mill town called Penton.

Once the cotton mill shut down, the community became a ghost town until a few years ago when Aidan, looking for a place to settle his vampire family and their willingly bonded human familiars, discovered it. He bought up all the property, moved in his big vampire family, and they settled down to live happily ever after and escape the civil unrest and starvation caused when a human pandemic vaccine changed human blood chemistry enough to make it deadly to a vampire who fed on it.

Of course things don’t turn out to be flowers and unicorns. A war comes to Penton, and it becomes the spoke around which the whole discord within the vampire world turns. (And there are lots of sexy vampires and hot romances along the way!)

When I came up with the idea for this paranormal romance series, I needed a location for my vampire town (which was, in early drafts, called Stockholm because the first book, Redemption, dealt with Stockholm Syndrome). I wanted a town in Alabama so it wouldn’t tread too close to my urban fantasy series that’s set in New Orleans, and I’d moved to Alabama about a year before starting the series.

I didn’t have to look far. When I got a population map of the state and began looking for big, empty swaths of land that had very few people in it, I had only to look one county north of mine: Chambers County. So I hopped in the car for a Sunday afternoon drive, and fell in love.

chambers county

The real Penton, Alabama, is an unincorporated community of about 200 people whose primary claim to fame is a stock car racetrack, the Penton Raceways, and a couple of churches. It’s not really a town at all.

A few miles south of it lies the Chambers County seat, LaFayette, which is a town of about 3,000 people very hard hit by the decline of the U.S. textile industry. It sits near the Georgia line, and the whole area was built around West Point Pepperell, a textile manufacturer that has moved most of its operations outside the U.S. and decimated the economy of this area.

lafayette-downtown

LaFayette’s a beautiful little town, with a charming main street that I’d guess is at least 50 percent empty now. The surrounding countryside of rolling hills and pine forest is beautiful. The mayor is a 19-year-old student at the university where I work (how cool is that!?). It reminds me a LOT of the small town of about the same size in which I grew up, as did my parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.

Neither LaFayette nor Penton are cotton mill towns, but I my hometown of Winfield was, up in northwest Alabama, so I know about those big hulking mills and the “mill villages”—small row houses owned by the mill and rented out to millworkers.

mill village

So, in the Penton Legacy books, I used as my setting the real location and name of Penton—out in the wilds of Chambers County—but for the town itself, I used a mashup of LaFayette and my own hometown with its mill and mill village.

old factory ruins

And really, when you think about it, an old abandoned mill town, a rural Southern setting only two hours outside Atlanta…what better place to set a vampire war?

Have you read other books in a rural Southern setting? Have you ever lived in or visited a small Southern town? Leave a comment for a choice of signed book from the Penton Legacy series!

In Emily’s own words!! Her Book Signing in Alabama!

It was a wonderful time!!!

First of all, you all know I abhor having my picture taken.

I just don’t take good pictures ever!

Slide1

So, I am coming out of my comfort zone…so to speak…with these pictures.

It took 14 hours of straight driving through to arrive in St. Louis, Missouri!

I turned my radar detector on and made it in my Dodge Charger SRT8 with HEMI engine in record time.

By the way…the Charger is what my Hero, Tabbruis drives! Funny how life imitates art???

We visited with my husband’s family and that went very well.

I don’t know if you watched “Everybody Loves Raymond” and or “Martha Stewart”…so if you didn’t, you won’t get this at all…

Matt’s mom is the original “Everybody Loves Raymond/Martha Stewart” Combo Mother-in-Law.

Every meal is to die for. But it’s hard to explain how “Debra” I feel sometimes.

However, his family put up with my editing and working on my book while I was there. His family even came to Birmingham with us.

I have to say, it was very nice of his family to come and give me and Matt their support!

Birmingham Library

Then we pack everything and go down to Birmingham, Alabama for the Book Expo at the Birmingham Library.

UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE…I have NEVER seen a library so big!

The Birmingham Library had two buildings, it was beautiful and airy! Just perfect!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We stayed at the Tutwiler Hotel right across from the Library and it was GORGEOUS inside and out!
The room was comfortable and VERY luxurious!
I was blown away at how nice it was! If you ever need to stay in Birmingham…stay at the Tutwiler…it’s MARVELOUS!!!
And no, I’m not getting a commercial endorsement fee…haha!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The night before the Book Expo we dined at the Applebees with my family, another author Daven Anderson of “Vampire Syndrome” and my Publisher PDMI Direct, TC McKinney, his wife Nessa and his two children Wayne and Christian.

By the way, his kids are adorable!

My books box set

My Publisher TC and Nessa presented me with WONDERFUL news!

PDMI, my publisher took my first three books and put them in a LIMITED EDITION GOLD BOX SET of my first three books,”Charmeine,” “Mactus,” and “Accendo.”

There will be ONLY 250 of them made. SQUEEEEEE!!!

The box set looks awesome and it came with a certificate of authenticity.

CHARMEINE Put together the way I ORIGINALLY wrote it!!A DREAM COME TRUE FOR ME!

Then that wasn’t enough to make my jaw fall on the floor…wait until you hear and see this.

They put all my first three books together in one paperback novel the way I originally intended it!!!

I started to cry.

You have no idea what it’s like to see your ORIGINAL NOVEL put together the way YOU WROTE IT!!

I was so happy and looked at that thick bound book novel and thought about all the work and struggle it was to have that precious book in my hands!

They even had it put together as a “Signature Edition of CHARMEINE” which means it has my signature embossed in the novel on the front cover and in the novel itself!

OH MY GOD! How wonderful!

I’m welling in tears just writing about it.

Because folks…I was just in Heaven and still am to see my “Baby” come to life the way I envisioned it to be!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At dinner the night before and presented with the Limited Edition Box Set and MY ORIGINAL Novel they way I intended it to be!
I am really happy in this picture, I was just recovering from crying and the shock of the GOLD EDITION novels bound together and then my ORIGINAL signature edition novel!
The next day was the Book Expo!
I was very excited and also nervous. My husband took this picture. I didn’t know he took it until I saw the pictures. Before the Expo started I had to say a prayer and THANK GOD for letting this day come.
I am not a righteous or overly religious person…no.
However, I do thank God for all I have been given and the chances I have had which most people don’t ever have.
Book Signing for someone
The Book Expo was great! These are some pics my husband, Matt took.
Yes folks…he is very similar in a lot of ways to Tabbruis…hubba, hubba!
The signing was fun and people in Birmingham have got to be the nicest people to be so welcoming to me and the other authors.
My wonderful mom! 92 and still going... even with Alzheimers!
Now it was time to visit my family and my mom.
We took Matt’s family to St. Louis and then came to Evansville, Indiana where I was born and raised.
I visited family and mom. She has Alzheimers and didn’t recognize me at all but she talked to me.
However she looked great and is being well-taken care of! She is doing awesome and keeps on being the wonderful lady she is.
I LOVED SEEING and BEING WITH HER!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Returned home to NEMO! Just made it in time and was THANKFULLY safe. BUT we are buried in snow!!!

The Storm “NEMO” cut our visit short and we left Evansville, Indiana speeding home in my Charger to race the storm back to New Jersey!

I’m not ashamed to tell you that THANK GOD the Charger is a high performance machine because we raced her all the way home!

We made it!

But it is shovel time!!

EVERYTHING is shut down and a lot of people don’t have power or heat!

Again LONG gas lines…just like Sandy!!!

But New Jersey is tough and we didn’t get it as bad as Long Island did!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well Folks that was my wonderful trip!
It was fun and exciting!
Now, I have a book signing much more closer to home at the County College of Morris on March 4th in Randolph, New Jersey!
I am thanking God for these wonderful opportunities, AND I thank you too!
Well crap! It has been 7 years since Hurricane Katrina and 8 years since Hurricane Ivan,which pounded us. I was hoping to be lucky again this year, but NO!! We have Hurricane Isaac heading right at us! Time to batten down the fort. It is going to huff and puff and Try to blow my house down!
Hang on to your butts people. We are in for a bumpy ride!
I am doing the usual. Filling up the autos with gas, stocking up on non-perishables, filling all the water containers and bringing in all of the things that could blow away.
I will know better what is coming by tomorrow, but still have to prepare for the worst. It looks like I am on the wrong side of this one. The northeast is usually the worst part of the hurricane as the winds wrap around the eye. Hello, that looks like me! Once it moves through the Keys and enters the Gulf of Mexico, it will suck up the hot water and strengthen.
Alert!!
To everyone! I will probably be without power for some time. Don’t know how long. My posts will be delayed and things that I have scheduled may be late getting posted. I will be emailing as many as I can about scheduled events being delayed.
Time to get busy again. I will be posting until the power goes! Wish me luck!
YIKES!
Grass
Grass (Photo credit: DBduo Photography)
The man who does my lawn maintenance is going on vacation.  I live on the coast of Mobile Bay in Alabama and even though we are in a drought, the grass grows  right before your eyes. I’m not kidding. With no rain to speak of, I can hear it growing. I fear that by the time he returns, he will not be able to find us, the grass will have grown so tall.
How tall can it grow, you ask? Well, I envision this after one week. I let my dog Quigley out to the back yard and when he steps off the patio, he disappears. Do you remember the scene in Jurassic Park 2 where they enter the long grass and you can see the raptors moving through, getting closer to the group. That visual of them weaving trails is what I picture happening in my own backyard.
Can you imagine running into this! Look at his eye. I swear he is daring me to come outside and play.
Quigley will enter this jungle and the only telltale signs  of his passage will be the waving grass as he tunnels through my backyard.
My mother is here visiting and she likes her afternoon dip in the pool. By now the grass has grown so tall, you can’t even see where the pool is. I got her one of those poles with a flag on top, you know, the ones they use for corn field mazes, so if you get lost they can find you.  I can see the flag above the grass and when she is done swimming I can direct her back to the deck.
Maybe I am exaggerating a little. Maybe there aren’t any Raptors prowling in my jungle. I just hope my lawn care guy isn’t on an extended vacation or who knows what will be out there when he gets back. For now, I await his return and listen carefully for signs of movement when I open my back door.
I dedicate this to my sister Nancy, who braved the backyard. She still hasn’t returned!
