URBAN WOLF Anthology: A brief interview with the authors

Wolf in the City by Linda Thomas-Sundstrom

Linda,how do your characters meet in Wolf in the City?

They meet on a dark back street in Los Angeles where even cops and gangs fear to tread, and are surprised as heck by seeing another “being” there.

Your characters actually come from different paranormal species.

Explain!

The wolf in this city (Jared ) is a sexy werewolf. The female he meets (Kit) is a feisty young vampire. As a most unlikely pairing, they might have to join forces and exchange some body fluids in order to see if bridging the “species” gap is in any way a viable option. Really though . . . who can better understand the problems an “Other” faces than someone who is also “Other”?

Is this a love at first sight love story or more of a slow burn?

Weres and vamps have long been enemies . . . so the relationship that unfolds burns slowly, but fiercely.

Which do you prefer writing—antiheroes or straight up heroes?

My characters, whether wolf or immortal, all have an innate sense of justice and are on a mission to help to right some of the supernatural world’s wrongs. So though the main character Weres, vampires, and immortals in my books might be anti-heroes according to human society they try to blend in with, they are ultimately dangerous good guys.

Wolf, Interrupted by Jillian Stone

Jillian, how did your characters meet in Wolf, Interrupted?

There’s been a lethal mauling in one of London’s Underground tube stations. Following up on a routine police report, Detective Inspector Abelseth Durant questions a startlingly attractive young woman who seems to know more than she lets on.

We’re curious why you titled your novella Wolf, Interrupted. Explain!

Both the hero and heroine in this novella have put their wolf on hold. After his brother betrayed him, Abelseth Durant became a lone wolf and walked away from his pack. Now he has returned to London and is working a case that almost certainly involves the wolfen underworld. Fearful of her she-wolf, Elle Hathaway has tamed the wilder side of herself by taking a lycanthrope suppressant. Now her supplier is dead and a handsome, but rather bothersome detective is sniffing around asking questions.

Is this a love at first sight love story or more of a slow burn?

Both! Never in her life has Elle felt such a fierce attraction to any man. She blames it on the fact that the suppressant is wearing off. Abelseth Durant finds it hard to get the lovely, mysterious young woman out of his head, and he’s almost positive she’s pure uninitiated wolfen—let the sparks and the fur fly!

Just how heroic is your hero or heroine? Or are they antiheroes?

Even though Elle is a reluctant wolf she’s less fearful that she realizes and her bravery is soon put to the test. Abelseth Durant has the kind of strength of heart a woman wants in her hero—he’s a wolf prince who never has to remind himself to man up. Plus, he’s deadly sexy!

Thank you both for the wonderful interview. Wishing your tour is a smashing success!

Wolf, Interrupted by Jillian Stone

Elle Hathaway has spent most of her young life in fear of herself. At least the part of her that grows fangs and claws. With the help of a lycanthrope suppressant, she’s made it through puberty, university, even her first job without so much as a shift. Then one night, deep in the tunnels of the Underground, her life changes forever.

Detective Inspector Abelseth Durant is investigating the lethal mauling of an unknown victim in the Covent Garden tube station, and Ms. Elle Hathaway is a person of interest. Sensing her wolf nature, he is mystified by the lovely young woman, and when Elle is abducted by a rival pack, Abelseth realizes he is being pulled back into London’s wolfen underworld.

Shaken out of blissful denial, Elle teams up with the handsome inspector to evade the renegade pack. But as her situation grows dire, Abelseth knows the only way he can truly protect the strong-willed beauty is to convince her to shift and claim her as his mate. There’s just one little problem with his plan—the reluctant Ms. Hathaway.

Enjoy the Excerpt from Wolf, Interrupted by Jillian Stone:

Detective Inspector Durant was a hottie and he knew it. What remained in his favor, she supposed, was that he didn’t seem to pay much attention to his looks, hence the unkemptness, nor did he appear overly impressed with himself.

He sat quietly in front of her, consulting his smartphone.

“Looks like New Scotland Yard has gone paperless. Rather high tech of them, wouldn’t you say?”

“I thought we might start with your police report. You can confirm, make corrections, elaborate—whatever comes to mind.” He glanced up at her. “If you need clarification, feel free to ask me anything.”

Elle immediately thought of two good questions: Have a girlfriend? Looking for one?

Tagline: Fur meets fang on the streets of L.A.

Wolf in the City by Linda Thomas-Sundstrom

Deep in the heart of L.A., in an area that cops and gangs fear, lone wolf Jared James stands guard, hoping to keep others from suffering a similar fate to the one he has endured. He is on a mission to find the monster that made him what he is. Meeting Kit, a feisty vampire with a mission of her own, will either help or hinder his chances to accomplish that goal . . .  but could possibly bridge the divide between two species, and make the long nights much more interesting.

~~~~~
Enjoy the Excerpt from Wolf In The City by Linda Thomas-Sundstrom:
The watcher he had detected early on appeared on the stone ledge above him, offering Jared another surprise. The female entity was human-like in shape, and almost could have passed for human. But wasn’t.
She was tall, her silhouette extremely narrow. And she had been flexible enough to swing herself up to that ledge. Dressed in body-hugging clothes dark enough to blend with the night, Jared’s unwelcome visitor gave off no viable scent for him to plug into his mental databanks.
Definitely not human. But what?
What kind of anomaly had no scent or heat signature?
What other type of being appeared to be human, but wasn’t?
The night, Jared decided, had just gotten a whole hell of a lot more interesting.
With the shadows at her back and a hood covering her hair, the female’s face wasn’t visible. The part about failing to notice how close she had actually been to his position on the corner gave Jared a twinge of dissatisfaction. This watcher could have had the upper hand if she’d wanted to, for the five seconds it would have taken before the brutality of Jared’s full strength kicked in… and if she had been three feet taller, a hell of a lot broader, and also carried a machine gun.
Though she was drenched in shadows, Jared saw her raise one hand. The object she displayed glittered wickedly in a slender shaft of moonlight, garnering Jared’s full attention. Across her palm lay one of the knives he had taken from the pair of ruffians he’d left humiliated in the alley. The same damn weapon they had waved at him.
Jared shoved a hand into his pocket.
Both knives were missing.
Growls of anger bubbled up inside him.
My Review
I’m a fan of short stories and anthologies so I was excited to read this collection.
I’ll give you a few samples.
The first story, The Era of Super Weapons, was fun and packed with action. The super weapons were humans with extra powers, some an interesting combination of animal and human.
One such weapon, while on a mission, bumps into other super weapons, and that saying “The enemy of my enemy is my friend,”  couldn’t be more true when they come up against a deadly foe.
This was fun. My imagination took over, and I visualized how these super weapons would look. Action is fast and furious, and the ending invites you to want more. I’d continue with these characters if another story became available.
Next up was Heroes. A young man, comic book heroes, and an old man. What if the comic book legends were real?  The writing was strong, and while the ending left me hanging, it did make me think, what if.
All Things Change was a strange little story about a girl living in a bubble. She’s locked in her house, surrounded by plastic, and it’s been days since her parents visited her. With no clue what’s happening outside, she invites a stranger in.
I would have loved to get more of this one. I knew something dramatic was occurring but was kept as isolated as the girl in her bubble. The ending left me scratching my head.
There’s a blend of several genres. Lots of different scenarios. And some fun characters too.
While I can’t say I loved all of these stories, I did enjoy their individuality and finished the collection wondering about several of them, and I’d read other stories by these authors.
You may not like all of these, but I’m sure there are some gems you’ll enjoy. From little nibbles to bigger bites, and four categories, there’s something for everyone.
Synchronysi – A steampunk masterpiece. After her volunteer operation, a woman awakens to a world made entirely of tine crystals. As she travels the shining island, the product of her surgery reveals much more than she may be able to handle—neither the land of crystals nor the world from which she arrived are exactly what they seem.
Terrors Great and Small – A couple barricades themselves in their home to escape a viral outbreak carried by mosquito bites. As the days of panic and solitude stack up, they battle with both their own crumbling sanity and the terror of what really awaits them beyond their front door.
The Walls Are Alive – in a world where violent offenders are placed in a deadly, automated labyrinth—designed to let no one escape alive—the labyrinth’s caretaker steps inside for a routine maintenance. When the automation turns on him, he’s forced to run the maze like all the criminals he’s sent to their own demise.
Horror Excerpt
Terrors Great and Small by John Langmaack
From out in the hall, something big dropped from the ceiling, slamming its bulk into the door and knocking Simon against the desk. He quickly bounced back, throwing all his weight against the door, pushing it back. A terrible droning sound filled them all with a primal fear. It rose in pitch and volume as the door moved toward Simon. He pushed against it with all his strength, groaning as he gained and lost inches. Simon used the desk behind him as a brace, using his legs to add to the strength of his push. The door was closing. He was…winning.
He shouted in alarm as something grabbed the door from the outside. At first, he thought it was a stick, like a branch. It was segmented and moving, with bristling hairs, like thorns. He gave a greater push as the droning outside reached a terrifying whine. He was awestruck with horror when he risked a strained glimpse through the narrowing crack and saw a huge compound eye staring back at him.
Simon recoiled and the door opened a little wider. He could now clearly see the thing. It was neither a giant insect nor a man, but a ghastly amalgam of both. Torn and bloody flesh was a quivering, wet curtain beneath the bulging eyes. From behind the bleeding mess, a long and slender tube, like an exposed muscle, stretched toward Simon’s face. He almost wept when he saw, above those prismatic eyes, a tuft of shocking orange hair. The frantic beating of veiny, cellophane-like wings caused the droning. He could feel the wind of their beating and he could smell the stench of decay it blew off its own shredded flesh.
My Review
Thirteen stories for the holidays. How great is that!
Some of my favorite authors contributed to this anthology along with some new ones for me.
Each story, though not a full length novel, was so well written it felt complete. That shows the talent of these authors, giving you a beginning, middle, and end, in a limited amount of words.
Spend the holidays meeting new characters, falling in love, and solving some murders.
Each new story brings that feeling of wonder. You are entering a new world, going on a new adventure.
After I finished one story, I couldn’t resist starting the next one. And so it went until I finished them all.
With weather cooling down, these stories would be great companions while curled up with a snug blanket and a hot cuppa tea.
Write to Rescue Blitz
Welcome to the book blitz for the Write To Rescue anthology.
All of you animal lovers are in for a treat.
Check out these stories from multiple authors.
Some you might recognize and you’ll discover some new ones!
I can’t wait to read these rescue stories.
I’ve rescued many dogs. In fact, all of mine were either adopted or taken in from the cold.
My last two dogs were dumped inside my fenced in back yard.
Lassie, a golden retriever/greyhound mix had a broken leg. The local rescue haven paid for two surgeries to fix her leg and I adopted her for a minimal fee.
While she was undergoing surgery and recovering, another dog was deposited in my back yard. A sweet little pitbull/hound mix. Knowing Lassie (my son named her) would be coming home soon, I checked with the local shelter to see if they could take the puppy. Nope. So I fostered him. Quigley (yes, I named him) was soon taken off the foster list as he was now sleeping in my bed.
When Lassie and Quigley met, they fell in love. Not that kind. They were both fixed. They became fast friends. I called them the ghost and the darkness. Lassie was almost white and glowed in the dark. Quigley is black as midnight and I can’t see him at night.
 I lost Lassie to an unknown fungal condition and it took Quigley some time to get over it. She’s still the ghost as I swear I hear her toenails clicking on the tile floors.
I’m sure there will be some moving stories in this collection and I can’t wait to dive in!
Some of the authors have answered a few questions
Does music play a big part in your fiction?
Carol Cooper:
Music has a lot to do with how I began writing. When I was at university, I wrote music reviews, which meant I got into some of the best gigs. I wish I’d kept some of those amazing 70s posters! These days music isn’t always playing while I write, but I sometimes need it to get into the right frame of mind to face a blank page. For me, The Beatles are creative Viagra.
Excerpt from One Night at the Jacaranda by Carol Cooper
Simon used to read her articles with interest. Back then she’d also jot down the humorous things he said, sometimes weaving them into her features. Until she realized they weren’t witty epigrams but actually snide comments at someone else’s expense. At what point had he stopped being just a music critic and branched out into criticising everything?
Tonight they ended up having sex because he wanted it. She was curious to know if it was as good as it used to be, which was stupid, because that was impossible. It never would be again.
Years ago, Harriet would go with him on the foreign jaunts he made to discover new music and find old instruments. These were trips when they couldn’t wait to get back to their hotel room, lift, wherever. She would sit waiting for him in some dusty café under a wide-brimmed hat, pretending to write as she sipped an over-priced Fanta. In reality she was rewinding the last tape of their love-making in all its knee-trembling, pelvic-clenching glory, complete with the after-burn in her lower belly that would last hours but was totally worth it.
Tonight, she also hoped that sex might put him in a good mood. But all that was a lot to ask of a simple and, to be honest, wholly perfunctory fuck. She moved her hips for a couple of minutes, building up to a crescendo when she half-heartedly faked a climax. It did at least make him roll off and fall asleep. Even Simon found it hard being supercilious during slow-wave sleep.
Harriet got up to brush her teeth. Two and a half years. That was all. No love could last beyond two and a half years. It was a scientific fact. She had read it somewhere. That was because the phenomenon called love was just a hormone storm. It took two and a half years to pass. Afterwards there might be calm, acceptance, affection, or maybe indifference. Then again, it could leave massive damage. Like Hurricane Katrina.
Music and writing definitely feed off one another. There is a slight boundary separating the two, however, regarding my own emotional satisfaction when writing music vs. literature. I’ve always said that writing is my oxygen and music is my carbon dioxide. I need them both in the air I breathe, but with music, I’m happy to breathe it out again. Once I get my fix, I can manage without it for weeks. But with writing, I need it all the time to feel emotionally fulfilled. I think this is because writing gives me a high, but music, for some reason, makes me feel quite melancholic. I don’t consider that melancholy as negative energy, though, as I’m usually inspired by it to write!
Excerpt from White Lady by Jessica Bell (about 140 words)
The road is cold and rough against my left cheek—the white reflection of the moon ripples in the pool of blood between me and Dad.
I blink, wince at a sharp pain in my thigh. I touch it with my right hand. It’s wet, warm—a moist memory.
“Dad?” I whisper.
His eyelids flutter.
“Nash.” I whisper a little louder, hoping he’ll respond to his name instead. He remains still, silent, skeletal. I try to reach for him, but my left arm won’t move. I’m not sure if I can even feel it.
Behind me, slow movement shifts the air. Someone curses under their breath and kicks a rock. It tumbles, rolls to a halt in the distance.
Gentle footsteps approach from behind. Someone sniffs, groans, and clears their throat; another voice whimpers.
A switchblade flicks open. The sound hovers in the air …
