Diary Of A Lost Witch

by Reut Barak

Synopsis

Molly is in trouble. Running away from home to escape the dangers of her coven, she ends up in Edinburgh at a time of Corona. Homeless and running for her life, she must find a new coven and get the help she needs to protect herself, or she is not going to make it back.

Read a Blog Entry:

April 13

The weekend was long, and I ended up having to sleep outside in the park. There was one guy on gumtree that said he was able to host people, but he seemed creepy. There were two more ads that didn’t reply to my email, but otherwise, it was impossible to find a place to stay.

There is a spell called the Tent spell. It makes a small fixed space safe, invisible to the outside world. You won’t be seen or heard there, and you can use spells inside. When I had given up trying to find a normal bed for the night, I figured I might as well head for one of the parks and cast it there. The park I slept at was called Arthur’s Seat. I found some dense trees at the bottom of it, near the small lake.

Inside my “tent” I cast a mattress and blankets, which were supposed to be comfortable, but I slept horribly. I kept waking up, fearing that someone might accidentally step in and discover me. Someone mortal who would ask a lot of questions, or worse, someone with magic.

It was a relief when the morning came, and I finally opened my eyes to hear the birds, and a few runners. It was also a relief from my dreams, of the terrible things I had left behind.

I dreamt that the witches of May’s coven had found me here, and taken me back to Alice. She had a plan for me, to make an example of me for leaving.

I woke up covered in cold sweat, and sat up for an hour thinking, before I was ready to fall back to sleep. I needed to find another coven and fast. There would be a few here in Edinburgh, but unlike back home they didn’t meet in the park during weekends. At least not in the one I’d been sleeping in. I had hoped to bump into a coven that way. That would have justified my homelessness.

This morning was different, though. I was on my way back to a groceries store I found, where the kind seller let me charge my batteries so my new phone doesn’t run out of power. He’d even told me where I could find a local sim card, and I texted the new number back to my moms.

It was really early morning. The store would just be opening. I was walking down the empty streets, when I saw something.

It was a girl, about my age, walking her dog. She had a sweater with a university logo, and the dog suddenly pulled hard on the leash. She cursed, falling straight on her right knee, and then screamed from the pain and cursed again. I rushed to her to help her up, and then I saw, or rather felt something. Something inside her was spreading warmth from her heart towards that knee to heal it. And there was only one way I could sense such a phenomenon. She was using magic.

What if you were the missing piece in
one of the world’s most epic legends?

Despite being an art history student, Summer isn’t thrilled to be stuck with
her archeologist family all summer in Greece. While the rest of her college
friends are posting a million selfies by the pool together, Summer is stuck
alone, trying to entertain herself alone in a place where she doesn’t even
speak the language.

Upon her arrival to Greece, strange dreams and even stranger shadows seem to
haunt Summer, leaving her to ponder the meaning of pomegranate seeds and
twisted, darkened faces.

Suddenly, her stay abroad leads to tragic twists, leaving Summer in the arms of
a dark stranger, who claims to be the god, Hades, whom she feels like she knows
from another life. In a whirlwind through the busy streets of Athens, Summer is
seduced to the lowest point of Greece where Hades’ lair awaits…the Underworld.
Determined to find out who she is and where she belongs in an age-old myth,
Summer joins Hades to discover that the secrets about her past life are beyond
anything she could have ever imagined.

Excerpt:
.
“Have you heard the news?” Hermes asked as he came to pause in front of
Darce. “There’s been a slight change of plans.”
“Change?” Darce asked, brow arched. He crossed his arms against his chest
and shook his head. “What do you mean?”
“Do we get to go home?” I asked, doing what I could to keep the hope from
my tone. Hermes chuckled and shook his head as he leaned lazily against the
doorframe.
“We’ve been invited to the Mediterranean Sea.”
I didn’t miss the dark look Darce gave Hermes.
“The Mediterranean Sea?” I asked, wrinkling my nose. “What about—”
“Zeus thought it would be better for everyone to meet on more neutral
ground.”
“So he chose the sea?” Darce snorted, shaking his head. “Sounds more like
he couldn’t resist an invitation to Poseidon’s superyacht.”
“Wait a second,” I asked, looking skeptically between the two of them.
“Poseidon has a superyacht?”
The irony hadn’t been lost on me.
“Yes,” Hermes said, flashing me a smile. “It’s a beautiful ship. There
are several amenities I’m sure you’ll enjoy your time aboard. The hot tub is
one of my personal favorite places there.”
“I don’t think so,” Darce said, the muscles in his jaw tightening. “We’re
not going.”
Darce pushed himself from the wall and grabbed my hand.
“But—” I started, feeling unsure. Was it so easy to just turn around and
leave? Could we really go home? Just as Darce turned on his heel, and started
towards the door, Hermes cleared his throat.”
“You know you have very little choice in this, my Lord. You know if you
snub your brother, he’ll not resist punishing you, and her too.”
His words caused Darce to pause. Darce turned to look to Hermes over his
shoulder.
“He gave me no indication that we’d be meeting out at sea. It was agreed
that I would go to Mount Olympus. He demanded that she go there. . .” Darce
tried to argue.
“Certainly you do not oppose a more neutral place-”
“It’s hardly neutral, Hermes. You know that,” Darce hissed. “It’s a show.
All of this is a show.” I could hear the growl in his voice as he slid his
hands to his waist.
“He obviously intends to make this meeting into nothing but a grand,
dramatic performance.”
Hermes seemed unbothered by Darce’s outrage. “I’m just the messenger.”

My Review

I read and liked a few of the previous books in the Bulwark series and I enjoyed this one too.

Dayna was labeled white trash and promiscuous as long as she could remember. Her mother’s reputation shadowed her whole life. I couldn’t help but hope for something good in her life despite her being her own worst enemy. I do tend to cheer for the underdog.

When strange things start happening in the small town, Dayna’s life becomes much more complicated. Buried secrets come to light and she meets a special someone who might change everything.

While the story was over before I was ready, it sure kept me glued to the pages. I had a really good time.

My Review

I read Bulwark, the first book in this series and really liked it. The plot was dark and mysterious, with genuine characters. It’s where I was introduced to JB so I guess I was expecting The Knowing to feel similar.

As JB pondered the past and his love for his wife, Ellie, I got this warm feeling inside. I realized the plot was going to be about life, paths and choices. All the best ingredients for a love story. And what a great love story it turned out to be.

I read this even faster than the first book and had such a great time. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this exciting series.

My Review

Small town settings are such a draw for me. Especially in the horror and paranormal genres. Brit Lunden sucked me right into this one with her flawed, vulnerable character, Sheriff Clay Finnes. His daughter has been missing for a long time and his marriage is crumbling. Things happen to challenge him to the core as he follows the bread crumbs for answers.

Bulwark may be a shorter read but the author packed it with so much mystery to ponder. What’s real and what isn’t keep you guessing. Where does the weird green water come from? Is there a Gingerbread House? What about the reports of wolves in the woods around town? And can a witch be behind all of the bad things that have happened?

I wasn’t sure about anything as I raced through this book.  The plot is revealed like driving a winding road. You can’t see what’s around the next curve, especially the ending.

After the Sky
Spirits of the Earth Book 1
by Milo James Fowler
Genre: Post-Apocalyptic SciFi Fantasy
The world isn’t how they left it. When the bunker airlocks release them after twenty years in hibernation, the survivors find a silent, barren world outside. But they are not alone. There is a presence here, alive in the dust—spirits of the earth, benevolent and malicious as they interact with the human remnant.
Milton is haunted by a violent past he’s unable to escape, despite the superhuman speed the spirits give him.
Not interested in bearing the next generation, Daiyna is determined to destroy the flesh-eating mutants lurking in the dark, pierced by her night-vision.
Luther is a man of conviction who believes the Creator has offered humankind a second chance, yet he’s uncertain they deserve it—and he’s perplexed by the talons that flex out of his fingers.
Willard is a brilliant engineer-turned-soldier who refuses to leave his bunker, afraid of becoming infected and willing to destroy any obstacle in his way.
As their lives collide, the mysteries of this strange new world start unraveling, culminating in the ultimate life-or-death decision one survivor will make for them all.
Don’t miss this Post Apocalyptic Adventure with a Paranormal Fantasy twist! It’s perfect for fans of Stephen King, T.W. Piperbrook, and The Walking Dead.

Tomorrow’s Children
Spirits of the Earth Book 2
The future is in their hands.
The post-apocalyptic world is bigger than the remnant imagined. Across the ocean, the domed cities of Eurasia have survived the nuclear holocaust that ravaged the rest of the planet. But only the survivors from the North American Wastes can give the sterile Eurasians what they need most in order to continue existing as a society: children.
Sergeant James Bishop, United World Marine, leads his team across the desert wasteland in order to make first contact with survivors in Eden, who are rumored to have a lab full of viable embryos. Meanwhile Cain, a coastal warlord dedicated to repopulating the planet, follows the will of Gaia, a malicious spirit of the earth with no love for humankind. Margo, telepathic geneticist responsible for designing the next generation, struggles to balance the will of a selfish dictator with what’s best for humanity. Tucker, an invisible man on a mission, carries precious cargo across the Wastes in an effort to rally a group of survivors into action against Eden.
As their lives intersect, agendas collide and tensions reach a breaking point. Twenty unborn children in incubation chambers hang in the balance—along with the fate of the world.
Grab the thrilling sequel to After the Sky! It’s perfect for fans of Stephen King, Tom Abrahams, and The Walking Dead.

City of Glass
Spirits of the Earth Book 3
The children of the remnant are adults living in the 10 Domes of Eurasia, self-sustaining biospheres along the Mediterranean Sea. Aerocars fly, clones work as security officers, and every citizen’s words and actions are monitored via their neural implants. Peace reigns over all—until a group of terrorists targets government buildings, and Chancellor Persephone Hawthorne is kidnapped.
Sera Chen, Dome 1 law enforcer, is drawn into the conflict after chasing a curfew violator capable of leaping from one skyscraper to another. When her augments go offline due to a localized EMP burst, she starts hearing voices. The band of survivors in North America is fractured. Daiyna roams the Wastes with a bounty on her head, refusing to confront her demons. Samson and Shechara target UW raiders who are pillaging ruins for resources the remnant needs to survive. James Bishop struggles against unexpected obstacles to be reunited with his family. And Luther is determined to find a way into Eurasia to meet the twenty children taken from Eden.
As their lives converge, unlikely alliances will form to combat an emergent enemy with plans to undermine the course of humanity’s future.
The Spirits of the Earth Trilogy concludes with this epic final installment. You won’t want to miss this!

Cresting the Sun
A SciFi/ Fantasy Anthology
with stories by Nicholas P Adams, Brian C Hailes and Rick Bennett
Cresting the Sun is a science fiction and fantasy anthology compiling twelve award-winning short stories (with a taste of crime and horror mixed in). Each included tale has in recent years earned recognition from the esteemed L Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future contest judges, with adventures sure to rattle your bones, launch you beyond the stars, and carry you through space and time.
Prepare yourself, hold on tight, and enjoy the ride!
Roadblock by Brian C Hailes – All Drew really wants is a chance with his high school crush, Lily. But on his way to a party where he plans to give it one last shot, he’s forced to take a detour off Highway 89, where fate has something else waiting in store.
The Hubbard Drive by Rick Bennett – I just can’t resist comedy. This time-dilation romp is my little Einsteinian “thought experiment” and tribute to L Ron Hubbard, a sci-fi giant.
L.E.A.P. by Nicholas P Adams – A cop with the ability to navigate the timestream puts his skills to the test when a series of murders threatens his freedom and the future of those he’d kill to protect.
Sketch Artist by Brian C Hailes – An innocent girl witnesses a murder, and works with a San Francisco Police Department sketch artist who has an uncanny ability to draw portraits based on witnesses’ firsthand accounts with a ninety-five percent facial recognition accuracy rate. However, as they both find themselves caught in the middle of a deadly mob war, can they find the killer or killers before they themselves fall prey to the infamous crime families?
The Devil & Woody Harrelson by Rick Bennett – Ever think about selling your soul to the devil? You may already have done just that if you clicked “accept” on the terms and conditions on an online program license agreement.
Half Z’s by Nicholas P Adams – A human/alien half-breed, desperate for a connection with either world, travels to the Gya’ol enclave for answers when she discovers a rapidly forming growth inside her body.
The Chaser’s Prey by Brian C Hailes – Having been shipped off to alien scout camp, Gareth Stillwater stumbles across the other boys torturing and mutilating a squirrel-like creature called an ehkhoor’n. When he confronts the alpha scout, Morrow Krin, and his accomplices, they bully him into secrecy . . . until he decides to steal Krin’s hoverbike and put the animal out of its misery, placing himself (and everyone else) in harm’s way.
Overture to The Opera of The Blades by Rick Bennett – This literal “rock opera” features a computer genius who speaks only in palindromes and shows the effect she has on an immortal being.
Uncoiling the Loop by Nicholas P Adams – A temporal manipulator struggles against time, the authorities, and a crotchety barkeep, to prevent his father from going on a killing spree before it happens.
The Artist’s Model by Brian C Hailes – An artist’s model with a past veiled in amnesia meets a mysterious visitor who claims to know who and what she really is. But when her most beloved master artist and patron unexpectedly dies, she must find a way to live up to her otherworldly destiny, and fulfill her new role.
Elvis, Baby Jesus, and One UFO by Rick Bennett – Most first-contact stories involve a superior alien race ravaging the Earth. Here’s my take on the opposite scenario: A superior alien race gets crippled by a clever Earthman-generated computer virus.
Gone are the Light-Wielders by Nicholas P Adams – A shepherd boy holds the fate of the colony in his hands when he must choose between keeping a promise to his mother and his responsibility to the community.

Read an Excerpt

What was going on? Suzy blinked her eyes, trying to get her foggy brain into focus. Okay, not much time had passed. She was lying on her stomach, on the cold pavement with her hands and feet bound. Her body ached, and she had a brief flashback to being arrested as a kid, under a boardwalk with a few friends and a stolen hover bike. At least today she wouldn’t have to listen to Mom and Dad talk about her dismal future. She gave a grim laugh. Hey, maybe I should’ve paid more attention.

She thought about her father, who was dead, and her mother, who still loved her. But then she stopped thinking about them because this was no time for gooey nostalgia. After all, I might have to shoot a few more people today.
