That Which Cannot Be Undone

An Ohio Horror Anthology

edited by Jess Landry

.

.

Beneath Ohio’s congenial midwestern facade lies a dark underbelly of urban legends, cursed sites, and unseen terrors. From a woman drawn to an underwater town haunted by its last resident to a killer desperately seeking to experience new life through the teeth of his victims, these eighteen stories all take place in the Buckeye State, some drawn from already-known accounts of strangeness and infamous settings, others completely the author’s invention.

Edited by Bram Stoker Award-winner Jess Landry, That Which Cannot Be Undone features works from new and established voices in horror, including Bram Stoker Award-winners Gary A. Braunbeck, Tim Waggoner, Lucy A. Snyder, Gwendolyn Kiste, and Kealan Patrick Burke, and New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Megan Hart.

I’m not me when I kill people. At least, that’s what I tell myself. I wake up, and I know I’ve done something horrible. My hands are covered in blood, my clothes are gone, and my stomach feels full. I don’t remember what I did. All I remember is the pain. It’s impossible to forget.

It starts with the fur. It spreads like fire, melting me. My bones go next, shifting, changing, breaking. I always cry, always scream, but I can live with the pain. I can’t live with what comes next. Something takes control and pushes me into the dark. I sleep a dreamless sleep, and when I wake up, the nightmare begins.

I don’t know them, the people I’ve killed, the ones I’ve eaten. But I do know they weren’t all bad. I live with the pain because I deserve it.

About the Author

Ryan1

After receiving an education at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, August Hill started writing Division X, a supernatural horror filled with dark humor, adventure, and sinister creatures that leap off the pages.

His love for all things spooky and scary was unleashed when he discovered Jurassic Park at four years old and the R. L. Stine Goosebumps collection in elementary school. He holds a huge appreciation for 80’s horror and is partial to fun, dark, and witty ensemble casting with younger heroes. Some of his favorite influences include The Lost Boys, Aliens, Gremlins, and An American Werewolf in London to name a few.

Hill’s knack for writing fiction emerged at an early age when he wrote stories for his own enjoyment. He is a collector of horror films and is a board game enthusiast. When not writing, he can be found walking trails with his dog, enjoying movie nights with friends, spending time playing video games, and camping in Maine.

Alien meets A Quiet Place in this science fiction tale of
terror for fans of Josh Malerman’s Bird Box and Tim
Lebbon’s The Silence about a post-apocalyptic world in which
monsters hunt the things that make us human – where feeling is a dangerous
thing.

Live. Laugh. Love. Scream.

DIE.

Dax and Bisa love each other. But in
this new and terrifying world, love is dangerous. Feeling anything is
dangerous. Love. Hate. Joy. Fear.  Any of these in strong doses will bring
a swift death. Earth has a new and terrible invader—monsters that smell the
scent of emotion, salivate over the prey, and hunt the very feelings that make
us human. A shocking tale of pent-up emotions and forced composure in the face
of unspeakable horror…from one of the most celebrated writers in comics, Peter
Milligan (
X-Force, EnigmaShade the Changing Man, Hellblazer)
and breakout horror artist Sally Cantirino (
I Walk With Monsters, The Final
Girls
).

Collects the entire eight-issue series.

Reviews:

“I read this at a gasp, horrified by the bloody events
as much as the too-familiar feel of a society
self-destructing–even before the monsters come. A
palpitating whirlwind of a start.” — Daniel Kraus (New
York Times
bestselling author of The Shape of Water,
Trollhunters, The Teddies Saga
, and Vault Comics’ The Autumnal)

“As brilliant and incisive as ever, Peter Milligan questions
what makes us human,
and what motivates us to make the terrible decisions we
inevitably make.”- Kieron Gillen (Uncanny
X-Men, Eternals; The Wicked + The Divine; Once & Future)

“Human Remains might be the scariest Vault series to date.” – Gate
Crashers

“a brutal, visceral, soul crushing world where the barest hint of emotion can
lead to a violent and bloody death.” — Multiversity Comics

About Peter Milligan:

.

Peter Milligan is a legendary British writer of
comics, film, and television. One of Entertainment Weekly’s “it”
writers of the early 2000s, Peter Milligan was at the forefront of
the revolution in comics which were created for a more sophisticated, adult
audience.

Shade the Changing Man for Vertigo offered a skewered look
at American culture, while Enigma, Face, The Extremist, and Rogan Gosh pushed
the boundaries of what comic books could do. Milligan was the longest-running
writer of the cult horror comic Hellblazer, and his take on Human
Target
inspired the TV series. For Marvel, the hugely-popular X-Statix was
a radical reworking of the X-Man paradigm, described by Kevin Smith (CLERKS
etc) as “the most well-observed scholarly analysis of media-manipulation
filtered through a pop-culture lens ever committed to the page”.

Milligan is the screenwriter of  Pilgrim AKA Inferno (2000)
and An Angel For May (2002) and currently is the co-creator
and writer of Human Remains for Vault Comics

Alan McGill is an American author who lives in Northwestern Pennsylvania with a clowder of cats. Alan was close to his grandparents who grew up in the Great Depression. They were married young and remained together until his grandmother’s passing. His grandfather served in the Navy during WWII and was a gifted storyteller who weaved humorous tales about tough events. Alan grew up with these stories of right and wrong along with watching fictional heroes such as The Lone Ranger, Adam West’s Batman and Captain America. Heroes who stood up to bullies and protected those who could not protect themselves. This made an impression on the author to always do what was right in his own life and shaped his love for storytelling. He is a multi-genre author with his debut novel being A Cry in the Moon’s Light which is a horror romance and mystery series. As with all his books, one of the primary themes involves characters who strive to do the right thing regardless of the adversity they face. The second theme present in all his books is love. A pure and deep love that defeats all evil.

Reviews:

“The book strikes a wealthy mixed vein of sophisticated psychological chills and
monstrous horror.”― Publishers Weekly

“Gritty historical drama meets supernatural horror in this sumptuously
drawn tale set during the Yukon Gold Rush.” ― PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

The Rush is a chilling bit of historical horror.
Rugged and raw and thoroughly researched. It’s got such a wonderfully creepy
sense of menace but most of all it’s the moving story of a mother searching for
her child, that’s its beating heart. Wonderful work.”  — Victor
Lavalle
(best-selling and award-winning author of he anthology, Slapboxing
with Jesus
and four novels, The Ecstatic, Big Machine, The
Devil in Silver
, and The Changeling, the fantasy-horror novella The
Ballad of Black Tom
, and the comics series Destroyer and Eve)

The Rush is a splendidly savage tale of frontier scum
and the doom they’ve brought down upon themselves, and the innocents cursed to
suffer alongside them. I for one can’t wait to see more.”  — Garth
Ennis
(best-selling and award-winning writer, Preacher, and
writer/co-creator of The Boys)

About Si Spurrier:

His work in the latter field stretches from award winning
creator-owned books such as NumbercruncherSix-Gun
Gorilla
and The Spire to projects in the
U.S. mainstream like HellblazerThe
Dreaming,
and X-Men. It all began with a series
of twist-in-the-tail stories for the UK’s beloved 2000AD, which
ignited an enduring love for genre fiction. His latest book, Coda,
is being published by Boom! Studios at present.

His prose
works range from the beatnik neurosis-noir of
Contract to
the occult whodunnit
A Serpent Uncoiled via
various franchise and genre-transgressing titles. In 2016 he took a foray into
experimental fiction with the e-novella

has the fluffiest of cats.

course, it is. Supernatural horrors start manifesting all around

Main Characters:

    1. Leigh Ramos
    2. Jesse Peacock
  • Kai

Character Descriptions:

Leigh –

Leigh Ramos is a young woman with an extreme codependency addiction and has been on a streak of bad luck that has lasted her whole life, thanks to her mother’s pattern of running when things go haywire, that she seems doomed to repeat.

Every man she meets seems wonderful, at first, until they all end up being dirtbags who sometimes put her in actual danger.

Despite her best efforts to live her own life, she seems to be forever stuck in a cycle of starting over, and this new life she’s entered into is no different. She only hopes she can break the cycle before it kills her.

Kai –

Ever since he was young, Kai has been searching for a purpose.

As a high school dropout working in a call center, he realized greatness wouldn’t happen to him unless he went out and sought it himself.

Six years later, Kai is one of the heads of the hospitality staff at The Mahalo Club, the most exclusive beach resort in Hawaii. He has everything he could ever want… a job that gives him purpose, a group of loyal co-workers who are also his best friends, and a home in the most beautiful place on earth.

The only thing he’s missing is someone to share it all with.

Jesse –

As far as Jesse is concerned there is nothing more important in this world than family. That’s why he is so fiercely loyal to his uncle, despite him being a meth cook.

Due to Jesse’s natural size, he’s been an enforcer for his uncle’s business for years, and though he doesn’t like to hurt or kill, he will do it if it means protecting his family.

That is until he met Leigh.

Enjoy this peek inside:

A churning wall of water speeds toward us, many times higher than any waves I’ve seen before. Knees shaking, I grip my daughter and infant and back away.

Angelica grips her talisman and challenges the approaching waves. “Por favor, deténganse, Espíritus! Los adoraremos mejor!”

The tower shudders and shakes. Spray slaps up the windows, like the water’s trying to pull us down.

The window in front of Angelica cracks, jagged lines marching across its surface. It shatters inward. Shards of glass fly into the room, along with howling wind and spray strong enough to knock everyone off their feet—even Thal. Lengths of grass tear away from my woven vest and skirt.

Angelica screams, a high-pitched shriek that sounds like an animal being ripped apart.

Genre: Horror / Thriller

Synopsis

I wanted someone to know, you see. To know my truth, now that I am gone. How everything and none of it happened.

Everyone knew bestselling novelist Cassandra Tipp had twice got away with murder.

Even her family were convinced of her guilt.

So when she disappears, leaving only a long letter behind, they can but suspect that her conscience finally killed her.

But the letter is not what anyone expected. It tells two chilling, darkly disturbing stories. One is a story of bloody nights and magical gifts, of children lost to the woods, of husbands made from twigs and leaves and feathers and bones . . .

The other is the story of a little girl who was cruelly treated and grew up crooked in the shadows . . .

But which story is true? And where is Cassie now?

Genre: Horror

Synopsis

Creature horror unlike any you have ever read . . .

Book I of The Nocturne Society

There are no monsters. Not anymore. Nobody knows that better than the leftovers of The Nocturne Society. After all, they disbanded their society thirty years ago because they believed their work was done.

After decades of inactivity, the aging hunter Brockmann is called back into action when he faces something he had considered impossible. An inhuman creature of unnatural origin has appeared at a murder scene. To stop the unspeakable horror the creature spreads through the harbor city of Hamburg, he must team up with a young man who couldn’t be more different.

The first book of The Nocturne Society drags readers right into the world of the long-disbanded secret society, where the supernatural inhabitants of our world are considered to be long extinct. But are they really gone?
