MY REVIEW

Two short yet powerful stories in one.

In Mystery Road, as Kevin was awaiting his father’s his final moments, he reflected on something he’d not thought about in twenty years. As a young man he had his life all planned out. Then he happened to meet a woman who lived in a cabin that shouldn’t exist. I wasn’t sure what she had to do with his father, but it became clear. A very moving story.

In A Night At Old Webb, Kevin is older, got some gray hairs. He now owns a bookshop and once again something triggers a long ago memory. A memory of a young girl. He wondered what had become of her. And why the memory moved him so.

Mystery Road was my favorite. I felt all the feels. At times sad and always curious about how it would end. A Night At Old Webb came in a close second. A ghost story that lingered. These are listed as horror. Subdued horror with something more. There’s strong, visual writing and some haunting illustrations. I enjoyed both of these stories.

A Night at Old Webb

Old Webb, an abandoned grammar school just outside Clifton Heights, is the place to be late summer nights in Webb County. A gathering place for friends to be themselves, away from grownups who have forgotten what it means to be young and free.

The summer of 1992, Kevin Ellison spent his Saturday nights there like everyone else. Everything was running according to plan: a college basketball scholarship, school, all the things everyone expected of him.

Then he met a girl named Michelle Titchner, and everything changed…
