MY REVIEW

I grabbed this on a whim after reading the synopsis. A goldfish dies. A boy wants him back. A woman casts a spell. Voila. Sam the goldfish is swimming around in his tank again.

Wait for it…. Sam isn’t the friendly little goldfish anymore. He’s got a strange new hunger.

At only about 17 pages there’s not much I can say without spoiling it for you. I don’t think I could look at a pretty goldfish the same anymore. Creepy good fun.

Synopsis

Sam is dead. Tommy, his best friend, wants him back. Sam might only be a goldfish, but he is the only friend the neglected boy has. When Mama Tasha casts a spell to bring Sam back to life, things get a little strange and Sam develops a decidedly, un-fishlike appetite.

MY REVIEW

As I work in a huge retail store and work lots of night shifts, it was a no brainer that I would read this book. I also knew I had to have a physical copy and it sure added to the fun and creepiness. A glossy cover with chilling images captured in the frames promised scary fun. I loved how the book was designed like a catalog, the start of each chapter offering an advertisement for goods sold in the store. As the story plays out the ads get more and more ominous.

Some people may not enjoy the slow start as it’s all about the store, how it works, and the employees who work at Orsk. I’ve always liked that. I like to envision the location and picture the characters. One or two in this story were very similar to people I work with. At my job, I’m often staying past closing and it gets really creepy without people around and noises seem to come from nowhere. I felt that when Amy and her coworkers stayed after closing to try to catch whoever had been damaging and moving products around after hours. Gave me the heebie jeebies. Once things started happening, it got more and more creepy and I ate it up.

Synopsis

Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring bookshelves, shattered Glans water goblets, and smashed Liripip wardrobes. Sales are down, security cameras reveal nothing, and store managers are panicking.

To unravel the mystery, three employees volunteer to work a nine-hour dusk-till-dawn shift. In the dead of the night, they’ll patrol the empty showroom floor, investigate strange sights and sounds, and encounter horrors that defy the imagination.

A traditional haunted house story in a thoroughly contemporary setting, Horrorstör comes packaged in the form of a glossy mail order catalog, complete with product illustrations, a home delivery order form, and a map of Orsk’s labyrinthine showroom.

MY REVIEW

This is a very short story. Around 18 pages on my Kindle. On Goodreads, there is no description so I’m going to share my review that way too.

Short stories are like a box of chocolates. You know…. you never know what you’re gonna get. This little gem packed a lot of scary good stuff in it.  Quick and to the point. No frills and quite the ending.

 The Boyfriend

,

Genre: Horror / YA

MY REVIEW

I don’t have to like a main character to enjoy a book. That’s good because I loathed Joanna. She was mean and narcissistic to the nth.

The plot was kind of predictable. Then it wasn’t. Joanna dumped her boyfriend. He died. But he came back. I wondered why. Things got pretty far out after that. I didn’t no whether to knock some heads together or laugh.

Bravo Mr. Stine. You took this to a whole new level. Never saw it coming.

Synopsis

Sometimes, love is murder.

Too bad about Dex. He was in love with Joanna. She broke up with him. And then he died.

Joanna’s sorry, of course. But it’s not her fault he’s dead, is it? Besides, she never loved him. Boys are just toys, to be used and thrown away.

But this time, Joanna’s gone too far. Because Dex is back. From the dead. For one last date with her….

Genre: Horror / YA

MY REVIEW

Scotty did that bad thing that many young men do. He cheated on his girlfriend, Lora. And now he’s gonna pay for it. The other girl, Shannon. won’t leave him alone. She’ll go any lengths to keep him. “You’re my baby now.”

Scotty made me angry. He cheated on his girlfriend. I was surprised that he turned into a sympathetic character for me. It was a common mistake where you whether you were young or older but not wiser. I started to feel sorry for him. Especially when Shannon got more and more determined to make him hers.

R. L. Stine always promises a good scare. Beware…… This one is scary good.

Genre: Horror / YA

MY REVIEW

The synopsis and cover had me itching to read this. Had my fingers and toes crossed that it would live up to those. Sadly, I wasn’t wowed. It was okay. Just didn’t quite give me what I needed.

A violent storm is headed for the island. People were scrambling to find safety from it. But, there was more than the weather to worry about. Animals started running amok, attacking anyone they encountered. The deaths piled up. What caused the animals to act so strangely? Would anyone survive?

As I mentioned, the story didn’t wow me, but I did like it. There were some exciting attack scenes. Just needed something else. Not sure what though.

But she’s always been strong willed, and she’s not about to let anything stop her from achieving her goals.

Now a storm is bearing down on Benediction, a hurricane that will bring devastating winds and rain, rising tides…and something else. Something deadly; something that will transform all the things that creep, crawl, and flutter into instruments of terror and death.

 Camp Twisted Pine

by Ciera Burch

.

Genre: Horror / Middle Grade / Mystery

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

It’s weird how much I’m drawn to stories that involve summer camp. Probably because I never went to one. The author made me feel like I had after reading this book. Took me back too. To when we’d go to the summer cabin on the lake. “She hated how the trees blocked out the rest of the world, branches overlapping like the fingers of clasped hands, absorbing light and sound.”  I really felt that situation. That excitement and mystery and little bit of trepidation when I’d go for walks in the vast woods behind the cabin.

Naomi was a gem. She put on a brave face and tried to make the best of it when her parents announced they were getting divorced and the kids were being sent to summer camp. It didn’t seem so bad at first. But then people started disappearing. Something was out there in the woods. Naomi stepped up her game to save everyone. I’d like to think I was as brave as Naomi. Had her ingenuity. Who knows what I’d do. I’m thinking maybe I was lucky I never went to camp. LOL.

This was incredibly engaging. The characters were well written and spoke to me in their appropriate age voices. The adventures were fun. And the suspense and sense of danger had me burning the midnight oil to get to the end. Super fun for all ages.

Synopsis

Whispering Pines meets Small Spaces in this spooky middle grade novel about a girl whose first summer camp experience is disrupted by a menacing creature abducting her fellow campers.

Eleven-year-old Naomi loves all things outdoors—birds and beetles, bats and bunnies—in theory. She explores nature in the best possible the cold, hard facts in books. So when her parents’ announcement of their impending divorce comes hand in hand with sending Naomi and her younger twin brothers to summer camp while they figure things out, it’s salt in the wound for Naomi and her avoidance of hands-on experience. Camp Twisted Pine could be worse. The counselors are nice, and Naomi likes her cabinmates, especially Jackie, whose blunt personality and frank dislike of the camp draws Naomi in quickly. Jackie is also hard of hearing and uses a hearing aid, and the girls quickly develop a routine of sign language lessons in their free time, which Naomi sees as a welcome break when all the s’mores-making and nature walks get to be a bit much. But the campers aren’t the only ones who roam the grounds of Camp Twisted Pine. When people start to go missing, including Jackie, Naomi has to find a way to save everyone—and herself. Her practical knowledge of the outdoors may still be rudimentary at best, but she has years of studying and the scientific method to fall back on. Can Naomi identify and stop the dangerous predator before it’s too late?

 The Beast Of Barcroft

by Bill Schweigart

.

Genre: Horror / Supernatural

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

This book took me back to when I was in my early teens. I went to bed. Got up the next day and a house that wasn’t there the day before was now in the once vacant lot beside my house. It was kind of rundown and the neighbors junked up their yard.  Not saying that happened in this book, just that every neighborhood has one of those problem houses.

The Bancroft House is one of those problem houses. The older woman who lives there is somewhat of an animal hoarder. And it’s developed into a rat problem. This has the affect or ringing the dinner bell, and something answers. Then the dying begins. No one is immune to it’s appetite.

Nothing pings my radar more than a creature horror story. The beast was everything I could have hoped for. And so was the mayhem. I ate this up, almost as voraciously as the beast ate it’s victims.

Great character building and wicked action scenes made this one of those straight through reads.

Synopsis

Ben McKelvie believes he’s moving up in the world when he and his fiancee buy a house in the cushy Washington, D.C., suburb of Barcroft. Instead, he’s moving down-way down-thanks to Madeleine Roux, the crazy neighbor whose vermin-infested property is a permanent eyesore and looming hazard to public health. First, Ben’s fiancee leaves him; then, his dog dies, apparently killed by a predator drawn into Barcroft by Madeleine’s noxious menagerie. But the worst is yet to come for Ben, for he’s not dealing with any ordinary wild animal. This killer is something much, much worse. Something that couldn’t possibly exist-in this world. Now, as a devilish creature stalks the locals, Ben resolves to take action. With some grudging assistance from a curator at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and the crackpot theories of a self-styled cryptozoologist, he discovers the sinister truth behind the attacks, but knowing the Beast of Barcroft and stopping it are two different animals.

And it pretty much was. I love creatures of the deep. And taking a look at the cover, I knew I was going to get some. Sure did.

It had some interesting characters, lots of action scenes and some wicked monsters. All of it came together to make this horror fan happy.
