The Quiche and the Dead
A Pie Town Mystery Book 1
by Kirsten Weiss
Genre: Cozy Mystery

Is Val’s breakfast pie the quiche of death?
Owning her own business seemed like pie in the sky to Valentine Harris when
she moved to the coastal California town of San Nicholas, expecting
to start a new life with her fiancé. Five months—and a broken
engagement—later, at least her dream of opening a pie shop has
become a reality. But when one of her regulars keels over at the
counter while eating a quiche, Val feels like she’s living a nightmare.
After the police determine the customer was poisoned, business at Pie Town
drops faster than a fallen crust. Convinced they’re both suspects,
Val’s flaky, seventy-something pie crust maker Charlene drags her
boss into some amateur sleuthing. At first Val dismisses Charlene’s
half-baked hypotheses, but before long the ladies uncover some shady
dealings hidden in fog-bound San Nicholas. Now Val must expose the
truth—before a crummy killer tries to shut her pie hole.

Bleeding Tarts
A Pie Town Mystery Book 2

Val’s new pies are foolproof—but not bulletproof.
Old West ghost towns are as American as apple pie. So what better place
to sponsor a pie-eating contest than the Bar X, a fake ghost town
available for exclusive private events on the edge of Silicon Valley.
Valentine Harris is providing the pies, hoping to boost business for
her struggling Pie Town shop and become a regular supplier for the Bar X.
But no sooner does she arrive in town than a stray bullet explodes the
cherry pie in her hands. And the delicious dessert is not the only
victim. Val finds the Bar X bartender shot dead in an alley. Egged on
by her flaky friend and pie crust specialist, Charlene, Val aims to
draw out the shooter. But solving a real murder in a fake ghost town
won’t be easy as pie. And if Val doesn’t watch her back, her pies
won’t be the only thing filled full of lead . . .

I want to apologize. My comment feature stopped working. I am trying to fix it. Just bear with me. And so sorry about it.

The Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum was a lot of fun to read… Lots of great characters surround Maddie and they are each well written and fully formed.

My Review

I read Kirsten’s Riga Hayworth: The Metaphysical Detective series and her science fiction/ steampunk book, Steam and Sensibility, and enjoyed them very much. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read her paranormal cozy mystery.

Maddie Kosloski got canned for standing by with her ethics and now she’s back in her home town, San Bendetto, wine country.

She’s soon tricked into taking over the quirky paranormal museum. It’s purported to be haunted. Now, Maddie doesn’t buy into that. But the museum cat, GD, (stands for  ghost detection), has her wondering when he reacts to things she can’t see.

When a dead body is found in the museum and Maddie’s friend is arrested for murder, she doesn’t hesitate to do a little sleuthing of her own. Who knows, maybe one of the museum’s ghosts will lend a hand.

That’s just a taste of what lies in these pages.

There’s a closet witch, I mean someone who doesn’t want others to know she’s a witch. A high school bully who keeps putting the screws to Maddie. The town uppity ups of the Ladies Aid Society want the museum closed. A strange man claims he knows something about the murder, but then disappears. A lawyer with questionable morals who gives Maddie the heebie jeebies. These are just some of the eclectic characters that make this cozy such a lively romp.

Mustn’t forget the romance. There are two men interested in Maddie. The tall drink of water, Lieutenant Slate, and the man with the muscles neighbor, Mason. Either one sounded good to me. I do like a man in uniform. But I also like a rugged hunk who rides a motorcycle. What’s a girl to do?

It took me some time to choose who I thought the killer was as I was having such fun I forgot to try to figure it out. I recalled a few tiny crumbs the author had sprinkled around. Talked it over with my son. Was pretty sure I knew. And when I got to the end I was….right.

There’s a scene in the book that really tickled me. The character, Maddie, is reading a book, and it’s one by this very author. I even remember the pie scene she was reading. I thought that was so funny.

Enough gushing. This review is getting too long.

Cozy up with a copy for yourself and have a spooky good time. I guarantee, when you reach the end, you’ll feel like me. Hoping this will be a series.

Synopsis

When Maddie Kosloski’s career flatlines, she retreats to her wine-country hometown for solace and cheap rent. Railroaded into managing the local paranormal museum, she’s certain the rumors of its haunting are greatly exaggerated. But a new ghost may be on the loose. A fresh corpse in the museum embroils Maddie in murders past and present.

With her high school bully as one of the officers in charge, Maddie doubts justice will be served. When one of her best friends is arrested, she’s certain it won’t be.

Maddie grapples with ghost hunters, obsessed taxidermists, and the sexy motorcyclist next door as outside forces threaten. And as she juggles spectral shenanigans with the hunt for a killer, she discovers there truly is no place like home.

My Review

I had a lot of fun learning about Hawaiian magic and menehunes. Never heard of them before.

What should have been a wonderful honeymoon in Hawaii for Donovan and Riga, one long overdue, turns into a murder mystery when they come upon a murdered seal and a murdered man lying side by side on the beach.

Riga notices the magic symbols etched in the sand and jumps into the case. Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too?

Riga and Donovan are the perfect couple. They both have magical capabilities and both like a good mystery. They compliment each other at work and in love. I loved following their romance from first meeting all the way through their honeymoon.

The author really did her research, bringing Hawaiian myths to the story and describing the lush scenery in vivid color.

Once the story gets rolling, the danger rushes in and the suspects emerge. I really wasn’t sure who was behind the murders and whether it was caused by human hands or magical. Finding out what was behind it was an even bigger mystery.

It’s been such fun following this series, seeing how the characters grow with each lesson life served up. I hope there will be more. It’s hard to let go of characters I’ve grown to love.

5 STARS

~~~
Some quotes I enjoyed.
“This is a terrible place for an investigation,” she said, exasperated. “It’s too beautiful. It’s making us lazy.”
Energy flowed through her, cool and dark, hot and light, there yet not there. She let it fill and empty her, and focused on what she needed: like calling to like. Necromancy to necromancy. Blood to blood.
Synopsis
Mermaids, menehunes, and murder.
Riga Hayworth just wants to relax with her new husband on their Hawaiian honeymoon. But a body on a Kauai beach pulls them into a murder investigation, sending the supernatural world into an uproar.
When Riga detects traces of magic at a murder scene, she knows she can’t ignore the call. There’s necromancy afoot, and she must prepare for the battle to come. But can Riga fight the forces of nature? Or will they destroy her and everyone she loves?
Book five in the Riga Hayworth series of paranormal mystery novels, The Elemental Detective is a fun, fast-paced urban fantasy blending romance with the supernatural, and exploring the magic of Hawaii.
My Review
I have already read Book Four and then Book Five in this series and had no difficulty getting into them. The author reintroduces you to the characters and past invents with no slowing down the new story.
I couldn’t wait to get to this first book so I could meet Riga as if for the first time.
What a rush this was. Riga took on a client who claimed her dead husband was trying to kill her. Voila, the client ended up dead and powerful magic was afoot.
The author lends Greek mythology and the power of Tarot to this mystery, keeping it interesting and driving the story forward.
As much as I was curious about who killed who, how, and why, I was also curious about an odd incident Riga had. She goes to the usual pub for some wine and encounters a sexy, enigmatic man who claims they know each other very well. Riga blows him off as a nutcase as she has no friends.
What tweaked my radar was a comment the bar owner, Takako, said. After Riga told her the handsome stranger was no friend of hers, Takako uttered, “But you two have been coming here together for years.”
With Riga’s powers acting wiggy, I wondered what in the world was going on and had a fantastic time finding out.
Meeting characters I already knew as if for the first time endeared them to me even more. I loved this book and can’t wait to read the next two!
I recommend this to everyone who likes a mystery in a mystery, lots of magical elements and strong writing with a mixed bag of characters, human and otherwise.
