Synopsis:
A new twist on the 1930s English country house mystery.

Embarking on their most daring time-travel experiment to date, Depression-era cop Steven Blackwell and his 21st-century partner-in-crime Olivia Watson travel to the Adirondack Mountains for a Christmas party at one of the legendary Great Camps. Their host, a wealthy New York publisher, has planned a weekend filled with holiday activities, but, as the last guest arrives, temperatures plummet and a blizzard hits. Before long, the area is buried in snow, the roads are impassable, and the publisher is poisoned. Unwilling to wait until the local police can arrive, the victim’s widow convinces Steven to launch an unofficial investigation. Soon, a family member goes missing and Steven and Olivia discover a second victim. Trapped with a killer, Steven and Olivia race against the clock before the murderer strikes again.

MY REVIEW

I’ve read the third book in this fun series and this newest was every bit as fun.

Steven is a policeman living in the 1930s and Olivia lives in 2014.  In the last book they had quite an adventure solving a crime together. It’s not easy when you have to bounce back and forth in time. Where there’s a will there’s a way and they spent more and more time together. Do I see romance in the air?

Now, they’ve decided to ramp things up a bit. Olivia is going to spend time with Steven at a Christmas party at a Legendary Camps lodge in the Adirondack Mountains in Steven’s time. The party promises all kinds of fun, but then a blizzard hits and the host drops dead. Poisoned I believe. His widow asks Steven to launch an investigation and, along with his partner, Will, and Olivia, he accepts and the sleuthing begins. Oh what fun it is to…… solve a murder in a snowed in lodge with a large list of suspects.

I had a blast. Jumping from one suspect to the next. I couldn’t make up my mind who did it. Had a few at the top of my list. One of them was the right one, which was revealed all wrapped up with a bow on it. I’m excited to read more of the series and see what happens next. Especially between Olivia and Steven. Can they make a relationship work? I’ll be here, waiting to see if they can.

Chapter 1
December 31, 1902 New York City, New York
She was marrying the wrong man. With a silk-gloved hand, Margery Belleville lifted the bottom of her wedding gown and peeked around the heavy, carved doors into the nave of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Several hundred guests—ladies in expensive finery, wool coats trimmed with ermine and fancy hats with brims reaching out over their shoulders, and tuxedoed men in black silk top hats—awaited the wedding of the decade. St. Patrick’s reminded Margery of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris with its Gothic-style pointed arches and rich stained-glass windows set in lacey webs. The soaring, vaulted ceiling, lit by crystal chandeliers suspended on long rope-like cables, rose hundreds of feet in the air. Light from the chandeliers reached into the far corners of the church and mingled with the glow of candles twinkling in wrought-iron stands. Inhaling the scent of balsam fir from the many holiday decorations, Margery gazed down the long center aisle, where she would soon walk with her father. Margery stepped back into the vestibule, her pure-white gown rustling softly as she moved. She was, at least, happy her parents had allowed her the choice of her wedding dress, if not the groom. Margery and her mother had searched in several shops, nearly deciding to have the dress custom made when they came upon this elegant, sleek gown. The moment Margery laid eyes on it, she knew it was the one. The high neckline draped in soft folds beneath her chin, flattering her face. The form-fitting bodice hugged her curves, yet avoided the dreaded hourglass silhouette, with its yards of smooth satin skirt billowing around her. Margery’s unadorned veil revealed topaz eyes and soft lips, but covered her rich auburn hair and cascaded down her back. This was the gown of a modern, independent woman. If only her life matched the dress. His conversation with the bishop finished, Anthony Belleville joined his daughter. “Are you ready, my dear?” The organ began Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March,” and a rumble echoed throughout the nave as the guests stood and turned toward the back of the cathedral. Trembling, Margery took her father’s arm. He must have felt her shaking because her father leaned over and, to Margery’s astonishment, whispered, “I know he’s not your first choice. But you will be well cared for and you know Gil adores you. I don’t know which man has captured your heart, but you won’t lack for anything with Gilbert Racine. The publishing empire he’s going to inherit will provide a comfortable, even pampered, life. He’s the best choice to keep you in the style your mother and I have provided. I can’t bear the thought that you would ever lack for anything, my dearest daughter.” Margery was further shocked when her father wiped a tear from his eye. It was at that moment when Margery Belleville, soon to be Margery Racine, accepted her fate. She would be a good wife for her successful businessman husband. She would provide him with children and a well-run home. She’d bury her feelings deep inside, lock them away in a cupboard, and throw away the key. She could not marry the man she loved. But she might grow to love the man she married. Margery forced a smile and reached up to give her father a kiss on the cheek. “I’ll be alright, Papa. Gil will be a good husband.” She patted his hand. Straightening her spine, Margery gave a sharp nod of her head. “I’m ready.” *** Excerpt from RSVP to Murder by Carol Pouliot. Copyright 2023 by Carol Pouliot. MY REVIEW

I’ve been reading Lauren’s books for many years and whenever she has a new release, no matter which series, I jump at the chance to read it. Each book has such genuine characters. And the animals are just as important as the humans. In The Prime Suspect I got everything I’d hoped for.

A quick note here. All of Lauren’s books have lots of characters and there’s often mention of ones from other books. She provides a complete list of who each one is so you can refer to it. I like to read it first so the characters are fresh when I begin reading.

I really enjoyed getting to know Sam and Bryce. Sam is a former police officer now working as a private investigator. He’d been seriously injured when his ex-partner tried to kill him. He’s selective on which cases he’ll take and doesn’t tolerate liars. That’s a deal breaker. He has a couple of handy partners too. Gus and Cleo are Dutch Shepherds with their own connections to protect and serve. Gus. AKA The Filthy Beast, is the more outgoing of the two. Cleo, AKA Goody Two-Shoes, reminded me more of a cat. Fastidious and above playful antics. I swear Sam and the two dogs can read each other’s minds. They have a lot of conversations.

Bryce became suspect number one in the case of her husbands murder. He was a cad. A cheater. But that didn’t mean she wanted him dead. She wanted Sam to take her case as it seemed the police weren’t looking for other suspects. After some convincing he agreed. She was thrilled but Misha, her cat, wasn’t. She wanted nothing to do with those pesky dogs.

At a whopping 534 pages, I figured it might take me a couple of days to finish reading the book. Not the case. There was so much happening and every page promised more. More suspense. More bad guys. More fun with the fur babies. And do I sense romance in the air? I ate it up in one day. Laughing and loving every minute of it.

The plot is twisted. The characters are full of depth, with many hiding secrets. Mackade’s two dogs and Greyson’s cat are not only smart, but have attitude with a capital A.  I don’t want to spoil anything, so all I am going to say is the cat is the hero who deals with one personal threat.”  Marilyn R. MY REVIEW

The minute I read the synopsis, I knew I had to read this. I love Christmas. It doesn’t always go the way I want though. Sometimes circumstances get in the way. But, I can always hope it will be better next year. These three women say, why wait. Let’s have 12 months of Christmas. One of them has to be perfect, right?

I found myself easily relating to Arianna, Molly and Sunny. Each of the women were trying to find a balance in their lives. They each had some big hurdles to jump. And yet, they remained hopeful. The concept of celebrating Christmas every month of the year had me curious what they would come up with.  I had a sneaky suspicion other characters in this book didn’t get the message and might foil their plans. Or, perhaps, they would be part of the solution.

At times sad. At times frustrating. At times hilarious. And always hopeful. These were women after my own heart. The Twelve Months Of Christmas was a joy to read. And it was all wrapped up in a pretty cover.

Book Excerpt

Sunny Hollowell had planned a perfect day for her first Christmas as a wife and stepmom and it was a fail. Who was it that said something about the best-laid plans getting screwed up? Whoever it was, her mom liked to quote him a lot.

“The best-laid plans of mice and men,” her mom had begun when Sunny told her about the latest development as she and Dad walked in the door, presents in tow.

“And women,” Sunny had added before Mom could finish. Women who were trying their best to be a good wife and mother, women who only wanted to bring two families together for a memorable day.

The day was memorable all right, but not in the way Sunny had intended.

It all began at eight in the morning. Sunny had found a recipe online for a crescent roll breakfast pastry with a cherry filling shaped like a candy cane and, to her surprise and glee, it had actually turned out like the picture, ready for the kids to be dropped off by their mom at nine o’clock. She was laying it out on the family room coffee table for everyone to enjoy while they opened presents when the Weed called Travis to let him know that she wasn’t going to bring the kids over for the big day.

“What do you mean you’re still stuck in Spokane?” Travis had growled into his cell phone.

Sunny had watched the anger roll over his features like a breaking storm. Scratch two kids from the guest list. Tansy strikes again.

“You did this on purpose,” he’d accused.

Of course, Tansy would deny it. That was how she rolled. Mess with the ex and his new wife as much as possible but never let it look like you meant to. Was Tansy’s mother psychic when she named her daughter after a noxious weed?

“Well, thanks a lot,” Travis had growled. “Way to screw up Christmas for the kids.”

“Okay, what happened?” Sunny had asked after he ended the call and dumped his phone on the coffee table.

“She did it again, managed to screw us over,” he’d said, and slumped on the sofa. “She and Jared accidentally—” he held up exaggerated air quotes “—missed their flight home last night and are stuck at his parents’ place.”

“Can’t they get another flight out? There has to be something going out today.” Of course, by the time they got to Bremerton, Washington, breakfast and Christmas dinner would long be over.

“Not until tomorrow.”

Sunny had made a superhuman effort to blink back tears. Poor Travis was already upset about not getting to be with his kids. She didn’t need to make things worse by having a holiday meltdown. But darn, she’d sure wanted to.

MY REVIEW

What a fun take on Santa and the night before Christmas. Last year, when he returned from delivering presents, all the yummy food and drinks were already gobbled up. This year he’s determined not to miss out, so….. he tries something different.

I remember when I was a little girl. I made sure Santa had his cookies and milk waiting by the Christmas tree. I was always giddy with excitement when I came out of my room on Christmas morning and I spied the cookies were gone and the glass of milk was empty. When I had a son of my own, he made me include oatmeal for the hard working reindeer.

This adorable story, with vibrant, colorful pages, brought back some fond memories. I hope you get a chance to read it and share it with your young ones.

 Sunset House

Ellie Jordan: Ghost Trapper #18

by J.L. Bryan

Genre: Horror / Paranormal

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

The title and cover are perfect for this one. An old mansion on a run down street that’s converted into a retirement home. Hence the eerie house on the cover and Sunset in the title. These people are living out their last years.

I’m always looking for horror stories with more mature characters. Got a lot of them in this book. And they aren’t going down without a fight. Some real tough cookies.  And some don’t think they need Ellie. That changes pretty quickly as events become more and more dangerous.

I loved some of these characters. I think they’d have taken on the evil presence with canes and  walkers. Any ghost should think twice before taking on these senior citizens. They’ve been around a long time. Got plenty in their bags of tricks.

I remember how much I loved this series when I started reading it and I still do. The author continues to give me new settings and evil beings to keep it fresh. Not that it could ever fall short for me. I’ll always be waiting for the next book.

Synopsis

The old Heusinkveld mansion overlooks the mostly shuttered main street of the small town of Burdener’s Hill. Once a testament to local wealth and aspiration, the brooding edifice now clings to life as the Sunshine House, a retirement home inhabited by an eccentric collection of locals bound together by fond memories of their shrinking hometown.

When a newly arrived resident finds herself tormented by a threatening specter from her past, paranormal investigator Ellie Jordan is called in to confront it. The entity puts up a strong fight, resisting capture, and soon more residents are in danger. With nowhere else to go, they need Ellie to remove the ghost before it inflicts serious harm or death on those who have made the strange old house their home.

 The Funtime Show

Ellie Jordan: Ghost Trapper #19

by J.L. Bryan

Genre: Horror / Paranormal

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

All of the Ellie Jordan books are scary, but I was seriously creeped out by this one. The lifeless eyes in dolls and puppets have always made me shudder. I imagine them suddenly blinking, their heads turning and something terrible coming out of their mouths. There’s this scene where Ellie puts her hand inside the puppet. Eew. What if it gets stuck or possesses her? See, they’re creepy.

Ellie and Stacey have their work cut out for them. The Calvert’s are in real danger. Something wants in. And something else already is. Once again, Ellie does her research and Stacey mentally paces back and forth, ready to get to the good stuff. The ghost trapping. And a ghost trapping they will go.

Still loving this series and the characters. And I’m really curious where it goes next. I’ll be waiting……….

The Calvert family’s new home used to belong to the recently deceased creator of a forgotten children’s program from the early days of television. The family’s younger kids are fascinated by the basement rooms, a chaotic wonderland of discarded stage sets, props, costumes, and puppets.

At first, the parents are glad to see the kids put down their screens and play creatively with the old theatrical elements, but their performances and their experiences grow more disturbing over time.

In this house, the reruns of a dark past never stop playing, and paranormal investigator Ellie Jordan must protect the family from a malevolent presence trying to draw them into the infernal show.

 Dread

by Kevin Bachar

Genre: Horror / Short Stories

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

You recognize a true storyteller when they can write short fiction that gives so much in so few words. Kevin is one of those. He’s taken his experiences with the natural world and written some unnatural horror stories.

Among my favorites is the telling of his first hand encounter with a sasquatch. I love that big, hairy cryptid. The author truly creeped me out and I’ll think about his encounter before setting foot in the woods again. Heck, I’ll never take nature for granted after some of these stories.

Whether super short or a bit longer, all of these had something going for them. I enjoyed the diversity and the lingering affect this collection had on me. I say to the author, bring me more. For you fans of horror, I suspect you’ll enjoy these as much as I did.

 The Swarm

by Frank Schatzing

Genre: Science Fiction / Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

MY REVIEW

Our oceans have been called the last great frontier. Depths no man can enter. Could there be intelligent life? I can’t help but wonder. And what if that life resents us? Have had enough of our plundering and damage to an ecosystem they also depend on to survive? Could you blame them if they used the very thing we all need to defend themselves?

This is a huge book. I can’t remember if it was gifted to me or I bought it. The synopsis was intriguing and I love books where nature plays a vital role in humanities survival. The cast of characters is large. It couldn’t be otherwise with so many sciences needing to be included in order to explain what’s attacking and why. As each new species of marine life turns on us, those who specialize in that field of study are introduced. From Orca who attack and kill us, to whales who sink our ships and crustaceans that poison us, it’s a race to find answers. Man can’t live without the oceans.

When a mission is planned to try to communicate with the intelligence in the depths, many rose to the occasion. Sadly, some died. Some also chose to remain with their families and try to ride it out. Those who went out to meet the unknown had no guarantees they would ever come home. But, someone had to go.

I mentioned this was a large book. That said, I never lost interest or felt tempted to skip ahead. Even in the scientific bits. They were explained in ways a layman like me could understand. The scenes where marine life that we trusted turned on and attacked us were vicious. It made me angry at their betrayal. Then I was saddened when I learned what was behind it. And when the group goes down there. Where the enemy is. Those scenes were so suspenseful. I couldn’t get enough. Had to know what was down there. Whether it could be reasoned with. Wondered what the fate of mankind would be.

I loved this book and thought what a great movie it would make. They went one better. There is now a television series and I’m watching it now. Just a couple of episodes into it but I’m hooked already and can’t wait to see how closely the film follows the book.

Synopsis

For more than two years, one book has taken over Germany’s hardcover and paperback bestseller lists, reaching number one in Der Spiegel and setting off a frenzy in bookstores: The Swarm.

Whales begin sinking ships. Toxic, eyeless crabs poison Long Island’s water supply. The North Sea shelf collapses, killing thousands in Europe. Around the world, countries are beginning to feel the effects of the ocean’s revenge as the seas and their inhabi-tants begin a violent revolution against mankind. In this riveting novel, full of twists, turns, and cliffhangers, a team of scientists discovers a strange, intelligent life force called the Yrr that takes form in marine animals, using them to wreak havoc on humanity for our ecological abuses. Soon a struggle between good and evil is in full swing, with both human and suboceanic forces battling for control of the waters. At stake is the survival of the Earth’s fragile ecology — and ultimately, the survival of the human race itself.

The apocalyptic catastrophes of The Day After Tomorrow meet the watery menace of The Abyss in this gripping, scientifically realistic, and utterly imaginative thriller. With 1.5 million copies sold in Germany — where it has been on the bestseller list without fail since its debut — and the author’s skillfully executed blend of compelling story, vivid characters, and eerie locales, Frank Schatzing’s The Swarm will keep you in tense anticipation until the last suspenseful page is turned.

 The Last Haunt

by Max Booth III

Genre: Horror

MY REVIEW

I’m always the first one to suggest going to some haunted house attractions during the spooky season. My friends look at me like I’m nuts. I seem to forget that each time I make it through one I say I’ll never do that again. Some have been truly scary and some I think I scared myself worrying about what would happen more than what actually did.

McKinley Manor was supposed to be the scariest haunted house. And that proved to be true for one unlucky person. She ended up dead. A year later, we learn what happened through interviews with other people who entered the house that night. And some about what was involved in making the house and who was behind it. If you read the first paragraph of my review again,  you’ll know why reading this book might make me skip haunted houses this year.

Scary is as scary does. And this book did.

Constructed from interviews with the survivors, this oral history is the closest anyone has ever come to documenting the truth behind the McKinley Manor massacre.

 The Year Of The Storm

by John Mantooth

Genre: Horror

MY REVIEW

Living in rural Alabama myself, I’m always looking for horror stories set in my neck of the woods. We have bayous, alligators, giant roaches and more venomous critters than you can shake a stick at. The most violent thunder storms, some water spouts and, of course, hurricanes too.

Right from the get go, I was welcomed by some great descriptive writing. And as the story progressed, I just new I was going to enjoy this book.

Danny’s mother and sister disappeared during one of Alabama’s violent storms. A scruffy looking man shows up on his doorstep claiming he knows where they are. Some readers will be thinking, been there, read that. I say, no you haven’t. The premise might be familiar. But, wait for it. Things aren’t what they seem.

I loved the inclusion of the invasive Kudzu. That vine was really brought into Alabama to help with erosion because of our tropical climate and all that rain. Right down the road, they’re putting in a new subdivision. They tore out the Kudzu, but when I drive by I see it creeping back. You can’t get rid of it. Always thought it would something cool to use in a horror story.

Told in more than one time line, I want to reassure you, it’s easy to tell which time the characters are in. It made me pause and think. What if it was true. Maybe that explains the deja vu I feel sometimes.

There’s so much I want to tell you about the characters and what all is going on in these pages. Not going to be one of those that spoils it for you. Grab the book. Give it a go. It lingers a while after you finish it. Scary good stuff.

Synopsis

In this haunting, suspenseful debut novel, John Mantooth takes readers to a town in rural Alabama where secrets are buried deep, reality is relative, and salvation requires a desperate act of faith.

When Danny was fourteen, his mother and sister disappeared during a violent storm. The police were baffled. There were no clues, and most people figured they were dead.  Only Danny still holds out hope that they’ll return.

Months later, a disheveled Vietnam vet named Walter Pike shows up at Danny’s front door, claiming to know their whereabouts. The story he tells is so incredible that Danny knows he shouldn’t believe him. Others warn him about Walter Pike’s dark past, his shameful flight from town years ago, and the suspicious timing of his return.

But he’s Danny’s last hope, and Danny needs to believe…

 Dear Diary: Run Like Hell

by James A. Moore

Genre: Horror

MY REVIEW

This is one of those times when I wanted to read the book after seeing the cover. Come on. Just look at it. How could I resist.

I went into this without reading the synopsis and the first thing it had going for it was how it was told. It’s presented as diary entries. I’ve read other books told that way and really enjoyed the idea. And the entries were written by a hitman. Talk about getting inside the characters head. Speaking of that. He didn’t sugar coat anything. He was brutally honest. And wait til you learn what his day job was.

An unstoppable foe, supernatural monsters, lots of bad guys and my own love of the different or macabre in horror made this a whole lot of fun to read.
