My Review

Whenever kids are involved in a horror story it makes things extra creepy for me. Make them vampires, and even creepier.

Three siblings go on a killing spree. How could such young ones even do that? And get away with it? That’s an even bigger question.

This book sucked me right in. It’s fast paced with no wasted words. I kept wondering, are they really vampires. That would explain how they could do what they did. Vampires or not, they acted like any other siblings. Fighting among themselves but also protecting each other when it was needed. They felt very genuine.

Murderous Little Darlings was one I couldn’t put down. It’s a short read with a big bite and I started and finished it in one sitting. I sure liked it.

Synopsis

Three siblings. An endless list of victims. A whole lot of time to kill.

With two specimens of the undead on either side of her, Juliana knew there was no escape. Kill the one they had selected for her, or be killed, and become one of them. What had the neighbours in the road called them, back when their childhood pranks were just that?

Oh yes, she remembered now. Murderous Little Darlings. They had the faces of angels, but possessed the very soul of the Devil.

Marcus had fully embraced his vampire side from the moment he was born. Rocco was the second eldest, and had fought the temptation all of his life. Then Marcus finally broke him.

That just left Juliana. Will she resist them, or join in the hunt?

The Ninth Session Deborah Serani

Title: THE NINTH SESSION: A PSYCHOLOGICAL SUSPENSE NOVEL
Author: Deborah Serani
Publisher: TouchPoint Press
Pages: 190
Genre: Psychological Suspense/Thriller

My Review

First off, I have to mention the cover. How perfect for this suspenseful story. And a psychological thriller it is. From the opening scene where Dr. Alicia Reese finds her new patient having a full blown panic attack, I could tell the author was writing from personal knowledge about dealing with situations like this.

Hopefully, not quite like this. The patient is seriously disturbed and the more sessions they have, the more dark it becomes. Soon Alicia is put in an ethical position that could cost her her life.

I was caught up from the opening pages and raced to the finish. The more I read, the more I needed to read. The suspense built. Had to know what Lucas would reveal next. What was he planning in that disturbed mind of his? How would Alicia handle him and the professional situation she was put in?

Each step closer to answers kept me on edge. A fast, furious psychological thriller indeed and I’ll be watching for more from this author.

BOOK BLURB

Dr. Alicia Reese, a recent widow and a CODA – a child of Deaf Adults, takes on a new patient. Lucas Ferro reveals the reason for his consultation is that he wasn’t really open with his previous therapist. After gaining Reese’s trust, he shares aspects of his life that are clearly disturbing – experiences that create anxiety and panic, but also reveal horrifying psychopathology. Instead of referring Ferro elsewhere, Reese chooses to continue working with him, feeling reinvigorated by the challenge of his case.

As sessions progress, and Ferro’s disclosures become more menacing, Reese finds herself wedged between the cold hard frame of professional ethics and the integrity of personal truth – and learns just how far she’s willing to go, willing to risk and willing to lose to do the right thing.

My Review

I loved the first book and couldn’t wait to see where this would take me. It’s been almost twenty years since the horrific events and Bryce and Jackson have grown up and settled into their lives. But, they’ve not forgotten what happened and are getting ready for what’s to come.

The author did such a great job with these characters. Bryce and Jackson feel like the adult’s they’ve become, haunted by the past and fearing the future. Once again I worried about their survival. The beast was awakening and they must again do battle against a deadly, almost unstoppable foe.

This was even crazier than the first book. There was more than one evil the guys had to deal with and the action scenes were bloody mayhem. I really liked how things from the past were explained. It made me love the good guys even more and I hoped for a bad ending for the evil participants in this story.

Many side characters again made appearances and several played key roles in the battles. Sure made things interesting and ramped up the excitement and suspense.

I couldn’t have asked for more in this continuation in the series and already have the next book lined up.

Synopsis

For nearly two decades, life in the small rural town of Silver Canyon had been peaceful and serene. People went about their daily lives as usual, completely oblivious to the inescapable horror that loomed on the horizon.

All but a select few of Bane County’s residents had forgotten the macabre occurrences of the past. It was hard to believe that twenty-one people, missing or dead, in only three months’ time had been so easily dismissed.

Bryce McNeel and Jackson Campbell had been at the heart of those horrific events, and the tragic memories of that long, bloody season still weighed heavily on them, especially since they knew it wasn’t over.

The time was quickly approaching when a long-slumbering evil would reawaken, and the horrors of the past would revisit the people of Bane County. Somewhere within the dark cavernous depths of the wildlife refuge, something ravenous awaited, longing for its time to rise.

As Bryce and Jackson prepared themselves, they were unaware that an even deadlier adversary would come for them, and once again, they would find themselves in a battle for their lives.

 Bane County: Forgotten Moon

Bane County #1

by J R Rice

30521395. sx318

Genre:  Horror / Thriller

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I was browsing for something scary to read and happened to come across this book. Juts look at that cover. Wanting to know more, I read the synopsis. An isolated little town in a National Wildlife Refuge. Mutilated bodies and missing people. A legend from the past. All of these pinged my radar as a good fit. Oh, and the werewolf. Just look at the cover and you’ll see what I mean.

Right from the beginning the writing pulled me in. The characters were brought to life. Bryce and his cousin, Jackson, were typical teens on the cusp of adulthood. Close as brothers, they had each other’s backs. A brutal killing too close to home had them worried And then a near death experience with something monstrous pushed them to dig for answers. To find out what was lurking in the woods.

There were so many scenes that raised the hairs on the back of my neck. The suspense was huge. I just knew things were going to go horribly wrong. People were going to continue to die. My worry for Bryce and Jackson and their families made the reading so intense. I was afraid to continue but couldn’t stop. Often enough authors kill off their characters. I was really hoping that wouldn’t happen with these.

About that werewolf. Now that was one nasty beast. It liked to play with it’s food. And it was sentient. Not just a monster.  I can’t think of much that is scarier than a huge creature, darn near unstoppable, being able to think, to plan and stalk. How do you fight that?

I love a wicked werewolf story. And I like to read horror stories at night when the house is quiet and the only light is the glow from my reading lamp on the headboard of my bed. As soon as I finished this, I got out of bed, opened up my computer and grabbed the next book. I couldn’t wait to continue with this series.

Synopsis

The large river-island of Bane County has a troubled past; but some histories are eagerly forgotten, especially those written in blood.

Nestled into the foothills of the National Wildlife Refuge, the small rural town of Silver Canyon seems idyllic to most; but a long-slumbering evil is about to reawaken.

Seventeen-year-old Bryce McNeel is your average teenage boy, living on a cattle ranch with his grandparents. Well, average genius, but he prefers to keep that fact to himself, no one likes a know-it-all.

When Bryce learns of a series of grisly deaths and mutilations that occurred decades earlier, his curiosity gets the better of him. Together with his cousin Jackson, Bryce sets out to learn more about the macabre event; but as they delve deeper into the history and legends of Bane County, the two boys are horrified by what they find.

Unfortunately, history has a way of repeating itself.

As friends and neighbors begin to go missing, or worse, they find themselves embroiled in a battle for their young lives.

 Things Too Big To Name

My Review

That title says tons. Talk about tripping the light fantastic. I was tripping all through this emotional read. Didn’t know if Margaret was coming or going.

It all starts when Margaret hits a deer while driving to her remote cabin. When she finally makes it there, the story immediately takes hold. Did she really see the ghost of her dead husband? Why did her former student come to her door? Who was the strange child she had in tow? What did they want?

Margaret wants answers. She’s confused and doesn’t know what’s real. To find out what really happened to get her locked up in a facility for the criminally insane and suspected of murder, she’ll have to work with a psychologist and dig through her fractured mind in order to find the truth. Past and present collide as those answers are brought into the light of day.

As I said before, the author had me coming and going. There were no wasted words. It was all to the point. And the point was captivating, mysterious and twisted. Several times I was caught unprepared by scenes I didn’t see coming. Like a deer caught in the headlights. Same for the ending. I really liked it.

Synopsis

Margaret Torrens trades academia for early retirement and the solitude of a cabin in the Oregon mountains. Four months later, she is locked in a ward for the criminally insane undergoing assessment, and a charge of murder is in the air. Pried out of her by an impatient young psychologist, Margaret’s story features Jane Farrow–a former student, who showed up at the cabin uninvited with an odd, mute child in tow–and Victor–Margaret’s alleged victim, who put his claim on both. As Margaret works to control this narrative of the recent past, she is waylaid by secrets, borne by the ghost of her young husband, lost decades before.

Advance Praise for Things Too Big To Name by Molly Best Tinsley

“The psychological drama of Things Too Big to Name plunges us into the mind of Professor Margaret Torrens as her plans for rural retirement unravel and she’s forced to confront the life choices she’s made since the death of her musician husband years before. One of her first students, Jane Farrow, appears at her mountain cabin with a strange child and asks to be taken in.  Days later, disruption threatens to explode in violence when Victor Primo barges in looking for them. Molly Tinsley’s distinctive braided narrative offers intense story-telling, studded with surprises, that keeps us on edge until the end.”-Merrill Leffler, poet, Mark the Music and publisher, Dryad Press

“A prickly but appealing narrator unspools events from her recent—and distant—past.  The plot’s gradual unfolding vibrates with the tension of unwilling confrontation and detonates with a satisfying jolt. A fun and absorbing read; I zoomed through it. –Allyson Booth, Postcards from the Trenches and Reading The Waste Land from the Bottom Up

“A recently retired English professor must explain to a Qualified Mental Health Professional the events leading to her arrest and commitment to a mental hospital. The more this brilliant psychological thriller excavates the layers of Margaret’s mystery, the more we understand how we all hide parts of ourselves. Molly Tinsley’s established talent for narrative and her familiarity with classic literature fold into one of the best novels I’ve read.”-Sheila Bender, poet and memoirist, A New Theology: Turning to Poetry in a Time of Grief.

My Review

It wasn’t that long ago that I discovered Jonathan Janz and quickly devoured several of his books. House of Skin has another chilling, gorgeous cover and dark and mysterious title. After reading the synopsis I knew I wanted to read it.

So, what can I tell you about this book? I went in curious and it didn’t immediately grab me. That’s okay. I don’t always have to be mesmerized by an opening.  And then I met some very unlikable characters. That’s also okay. I’ve read many books where I didn’t like the characters. Makes it much more interesting when things go sideways. I was starting to wonder if this just wasn’t one for me. But, not one to be able to leave a story unread, I continued on. You just never know what might be coming. Then, it started to get real interesting. Real crazy. And there was the Janz story I was hoping for.

House Of Skin might have taken it’s time hooking me, but when the teeth sunk in, they had a big bite.

My Review

Sometimes. I will grab a book Just because of the cover Just look at it. Reminds me of the old school horror covers I couldn’t get enough of back in the day. Who am I kidding. I still can’t get enough of them.

So, the setting is a huge, creepy mansion. I’m always up for that The beginning is a family gathering to say goodbye to dearly departed Gretchen. Is Gretchen so dearly? What I gleaned from the synopsis is, probably not.

I read a lot of horror and throwing kids into the mix always makes it extra creepy. They don’t see the repercussions of their actions. Or do they? Are Gretchen’s grandkids just curious when they start dabbling in the occult? Are they being guided? I soon learned these kids were warped way before they came to the mansion and discovered Gretchen’s secrets.

Another thing I enjoy in horror is the shorter stories. I appreciate how hard it is to set up a story, breathe life into the characters and then try to scare the pants off ya. This is about 100 pages and packs a mean punch. The gloves are off and it gets pretty dark and a few things really had me sitting back thinking whoa. And after I finished this little gem I was thinking, if this short story unsettled me this much, I wonder what the author could do to me with a longer one.

Synopsis

Sometimes they come back angry …

Ace’s life is satisfying in an ordinary sort of way. At twenty-five he’s deeply in love with his wife of two years, and he and Runa are expecting their first child. But when Ace’s mother-in-law passes away after a short illness, things take a turn for the weird.

Everyone in the family knows that Gretchen dabbled in the occult prior to her death, inviting friends over for occasional tarot card readings and séances. What most of them don’t know is that she spent a considerable amount of time training her grandchildren in the art of the uncanny. Now Brinn and Oliver appear to be experimenting with strange rituals—rituals linked to increasingly disturbing events.

To get a handle on what’s happening, Ace and Runa begin investigating Gretchen’s explorations into the supernatural. But it will take time, and a shocking series of developments, for them to discover how high the stakes are for their growing family.

20 Tales Of Giant Creature Terror

Edited by Ryan C. Thomas

Genre:  Horror / Anthology

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I’m not sure how I got my hands on this one but I do know that wicked cover sealed the deal even before I clutched it in my greedy hands.

I ate this stuff up. All kinds of giant creatures mucking about. As with a lot of collections, some were okay, and some were wicked good. I’m not going to play favorites. but several stories in here have me adding some new authors to my must read list.

Fans of creature features will have fun with these like I did. They are short stories so character development is limited, but some authors did a bang up job with that. And it is about giant creatures that couldn’t possibly really exist. At least, I hope not. I had some fun, flinched a few times and came out at the end happy to have browsed through these.

Where The Dead Go To Die

by Aaron Dries and Mark Allan Gunnells

33016821. sy475

Genre:  Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

It’s years after the infection started. The smilers are no longer hunted and killed on sight. Instead, they are tended to in facilities, allowed to spend remaining days with as much dignity as possible. Care givers tend to their needs until their last breath.

Emily is one of those care givers. She’s there to help them, give comfort and support, and protect them from others and themselves. She thinks she’s an ordinary woman. A single mother trying to make ends meet. I think she is brave. There’s still a risk of infection if careless. She watches as the night screams fade and the patients change. become the smilers, right before the end. Doesn’t shy from the dirty work. She’s already been through it on a much more personal level.

Where The Dead Go To Die is what I call a quiet horror story. It’s those hushed little scenes in between the ordinary ones that make the most impact. I know they have importance and stay in the back of mind, to be brought out later when the authors uncloak more.

I was so swept up in this story. The political machinations and moral ramifications bounced around in my head. The authors made me forget this was fiction and made me really think, Think how I would navigate this world, How I would feel about the smilers. Whether I might be one of those I looked down upon in the story or one of those I looked up to. How could I know? That questioning was very deep. Several times I actually stopped reading to contemplate what I’d just experienced.

And all through this quiet horror story, I knew bad things were coming. The quiet would be shattered by things horrific. The infrastructure would crumble. Things wouldn’t be contained. And the horror would become a roar.

This was an original and engrossing spin on zombie stories. I came away from it thinking I had to see what else these two authors had written. And I’m still catching myself thinking about what occurred in these pages.

Synopsis

There are monsters in this world. And they used to be us. Now it’s time to euthanize to survive in a hospice where Emily, a woman haunted by her past, only wants to do her job and be the best mother possible.

Post-infection Chicago. Christmas.

Inside The Hospice, Emily and her fellow nurses do their rounds. Here, men and women live out their final days in comfort, segregated from society, and are then humanely terminated before fate turns them into marrow-craving monsters known as ‘Smilers.’ Outside these imposing walls, rabid protesters swarm with signs, caught up in the heat of their hatred.

Emily, a woman haunted by her past, only wants to do her job and be the best mother possible. But in a world where mortality means nothing, where guns are drawn in fear and nobody seems safe anymore – at what cost will this pursuit come? And through it all, the soon to be dead remain silent, ever smiling. Such is their curse.

This emotional, political novel comes from two of horror’s freshest voices, and puts a new spin on an eternal topic: the undead. In the spirit of George A Romero meets Jack Ketchum, Where the Dead Go to Die it is an unforgettable epilogue to the zombie genre, one that will leave you shaken and questioning right from wrong…even when it’s the only right left.

It won’t be long before that snow-speckled ground will be salted by blood.

WITCHES PROTECTION PROGRAM
Author: Michael Okon
Publisher: WordFire Press
Pages: 200
Genre: Fantasy/Urban Fantasy

My Review

Poor Wes. He’s failed again and now he’s been given one last chance to prove himself qualified to be in law enforcement. He’s sure it’s a prank when he’s assigned to the Witches Protection Program.

It’s no hoax. But it takes some convincing for Wes to believe in witches. He gets it in spades.

His first assignment, protect a witch, heiress Morgan Pendragon, from her evil aunt. Her aunt is cooking up a diabolical scheme to rule the world.

Wes will have to catch on quick if he’s to save Morgan and himself from a witches brew of trouble.

This was a fun story with some likable and not so likable characters. Got to take the good with the bad.

Wes is a pain in the beginning. Then he finds his place and becomes someone to cheer for.

Morgan is a reluctant witch, wanting nothing to do with her aunt or the other witches and their schemes. They’re not going to give her a choice though.

There’s some cool weapons, compelling characters, and a showdown at the end that I wish I could see for myself. Just imagine the pile-up when drivers look up and see witches flying in the sky.

I like a good witch, but I have a thing for the bad ones too. There’s one, Morgan’s aunt, who will chill you to the bone. Too powerful for anyone’s good.

Grab a broomstick and hang on tight. It’s a bumpy ride.

Synopsis

Wes Rockville, a disgraced law-enforcement agent, gets one last chance to prove himself and save his career when he’s reassigned to a 232-year-old secret government organization.

The Witches Protection Program.

Reluctantly paired with veteran witch protector, Alastair Verne, Wes must learn to believe in witches…and believe in himself.

Filled with adventure and suspense, Michael Okon creates a rousing, tongue-in-cheek alternate reality where witches cast spells and wreak havoc in modern-day New York City.

The narrator filled in more information. “It wasn’t until this land became my land that the government decided to create an organization to protect women at risk. The Davina Doctrine went against everything that the Willas stood for. Even though they ran the risk of persecution, the Davinas chose to work with law enforcement to expose the evil deeds of the rival sisterhood. President George Washington established secret legislation under Title VI of the Control Act of 1792. The law was enacted to protect the good witches that exposed the evil deeds of their sisterhood.”

The screen went dark. There was only a chair in the center of a dimly lit stage. A single spotlight focused on the top of the blond actress’s head. Wes was right; it was the actress he’d suspected. She had a hit sitcom and two Emmys, and there was some recent Oscar talk about her last movie.

“Yes. There are witches. Living among us. They are women who believe in using their power to protect love and life. And then there are some who use their powers for all the wrong reasons.”

The camera came to rest on her beautiful face. She winked saucily as she placed a triangular witch’s hat on her head. “Welcome to the WitchesProtection Program.”

Alastair smiled broadly. “I love that part.”

“That was Jennifer Anis—”
