About Author Yvonne Knop:
Yvonne is a bi and nonbinary writer who dedicates their free time to extending the secret Gay Agenda.

Although born and raised in the north of Germany, Yvonne’s passion for Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who, their sassy humor, and aversion to talking on public transport made them suspiciously British from early on.

As a natural matter of cause and effect, Yvonne moved to London in 2014 and started to write (a novel for the drawer). No word was written until 2017 when the sudden question of ‘What if I could talk to Sherlock Holmes?’ came up to them.

Conducting PhD research in the world’s most extensive Sherlock Holmes collection, located in Minneapolis, USA, was a great help for answering that question. The result was not a PhD, but their debut Novel A Case of Madness, originally written in German and in a bold move translated by the author themselves when nobody in Germany understood a word they were saying.

.

An epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance perfect for fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout, Raven Kennedy, and Sarah J Maas.

.

After spending years training to defend my people from our enemies, I never expected that my enemy would be the one keeping me alive.

Athos is the last human city. A treaty with the Fae keeps the fae, the vampires, and the wolf shifters at bay, while we fight against the dragons at our border. Being a human in this world is dangerous and we all make sacrifices to survive.

When the delegation sent by the Fae King arrives to claim the human tributes required by our treaty, I never expected to forge a connection with their leader.

Ryvin is as dangerous as he is handsome. I know he’s my enemy, and I know I’m supposed to hate him, but with each passing day, he’s more difficult to resist.

But things are changing in Athos. Humans no longer want to bend to the Fae King.

Alliances blur and centuries of lies begin to unravel.

And I’m faced with a choice.

No matter how much I hate him, Ryvin might be the key to preventing war.

But it may mean sacrificing everything….

Kingdom of Blood and Salt is the
first book in a fantasy romance trilogy with fae, vampires, and shifters. This
enemies to lovers series contains violence, mature language, and spice. This is
a NA/adult fantasy romance and steam level will increase as the series
progresses. Mind the cliff.

Excerpt from Kingdom of Blood and Salt by Alexis Calder

.

The delegates settled around the table, and my sisters took
their places between them. Morta was seated at the far end, near my father. The
queen was at the other end, facing him. As soon as everyone was seated, I took
a seat next to a delegate, as far away as I could from the strange woman. There
were a few empty chairs next to me, giving me a buffer between me and the
queen.

At least I’d only have to make small talk with one of the
delegates, and I could avoid being too close to Ophelia. Istvan took a seat
near the queen, leaving one empty chair between us. I was grateful he’d chosen
to be closer to her than me.

Servants brought out drinks, then followed with platters of
fish and lamb, bowls of rice and vegetables, and gorgeous towers of figs
dripping with honey. My stomach growled at the sight, and I breathed in the
mingling scents.

“Your kingdom is lovely,” the man sitting next to me said.

I looked over at him, doing my best to force a smile. “Thank
you.”

The man smiled widely, and I caught sight of two gleaming
white fangs. “Not so different from my home.”

Swallowing down the initial burst of fear, I forced my gaze
to his eyes. They were watery blue. A faded, unimpressive color. After
everything I’d been told about these creatures, I expected something more. They
were said to be beautiful, experts at seduction. But this man wasn’t any prize.
There were plenty of guards in our armies who were more handsome.

“You don’t seem to be afraid of me,” he said.

“Should I be?” I asked.

“Most humans are,” he said.

“And you enjoy being feared?” I asked.

He smirked. “Fear is power, princess.”

“Respect is power,” I countered.

“You are young, but you’ll learn,” he said.

“Orion, are you trying to scare our new friend?” A familiar
deep voice cut in.

I tensed, knowing my good luck was up. I looked to my right
just as the ambassador pulled out the chair and sat next to me.

“I thought perhaps you’d fallen into the sea,” I said.

“Alas, I’m an excellent swimmer. I was… occupied,” he said,
his eyes darting toward one of the servants in the corner. She caught his eye,
then giggled, her face flushing deep crimson.

My stomach tightened in what felt an awful lot like jealousy.
Gritting my teeth, I sent the thought away. First Lady Marlette at the party
and now servants? With any luck, he’d be too busy finding women to seduce to
have any need for me.

A grim thought struck me. Perhaps this was how he chose
tributes. Or maybe he promised his lovers a reprieve. “Already making notes for
your selection?”

“That wasn’t my intention,” he said. “I was simply getting to
know your household.”

“With a servant, Ryvin?” Orion wrinkled his nose.

“None of the princesses were available,” Ryvin said with a
shrug.

“Nor will they be,” I bit out. “You will not touch me or any
of my sisters. That applies to all of you.” I glanced at each man next to me,
before turning back to Ryvin. I knew he was the highest ranking out of their
delegation. “You understand me?”

A hand gripped my thigh and squeezed. “I like your fire,”
Orion whispered in my ear.

Before I could push him away, Ryvin was out of his seat, his
chair clattering to the ground. He yanked Orion from his seat. In a blur of
black fabric, Orion was on the ground and Ryvin’s knee was on the man’s chest.
The ambassador held a dagger to the other man’s throat. “She gave you an order.”

Gasps and the screeching of chairs over the stone floor
surrounded us, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the men on the ground.

“You take the side of a woman over me?” Orion hissed.

“We are their guests,” Ryvin said. “If you touch her again, I
will remove your head myself.”

My heart thundered in my chest, and I had to clamp my thighs
together to tamp down the rising need. I’d grown up around the fiercest
warriors in our kingdom, but never once had any of them defended me.
Apparently, it was a major turn on.

Blowing out a breath, I gave myself a moment to enjoy the
thrill of seeing a man stand up for me before reminding myself of who he was.
He was still a monster. Just because he stood up to another monster didn’t
change anything.

“Is everything alright, ambassador?” My father asked.

Ryvin removed his knee, then tucked his dagger into his boot.
He stood, then smoothed out his tunic. “I apologize, your highness. We aren’t
used to human protocols. Sometimes, I forget myself and a little bit of the
beast within breaks free.” He glanced at me before he turned back to my father.
“Please, forgive me.”

A lump rose in my throat. His words were a reminder of what
simmered below that handsome exterior. I’d wondered if he was human, and it
seemed he was giving me a hint. Or a warning.

“I apologize for my forwardness, your highness,” Orion said
softly. He was standing next to me, eyes downcast.

Everyone in the room was staring at me, waiting for me to
react. I licked my lips reflexively.

“If you’d like me to further punish him, I’m happy to
oblige,” Ryvin said so quietly I was certain I was the only one who heard him.

“That’s not necessary.” I had a feeling if I said the words,
Orion’s head would be torn from his body. I glanced at the man standing to my
left. “A misunderstanding”

Orion bowed. “It won’t happen again; I can assure you.”

“Well, if that’s settled,” the queen said. “Shall we get back
to our meal?”

Orion settled into his seat, and after a few tense moments of
silence, the table erupted into general chatter.

Sophia caught my eye, then silently mouthed the words, are you okay? I nodded, then made myself
eat, keeping my attention on my food.

“I will keep my men in line,” Ryvin said.

“Can you send your men home?” I countered.

“As soon as our job here is done,” he said.

“You mean after you kidnap humans so you can take them to
their deaths?” I hadn’t meant to say it, but the words tumbled out.

“I can assure you; all the tributes are well cared for and
live a far more luxurious life than they’d have here,” he said.

“If you say so,” I mumbled.

“I can offer my personal…”

I stood, not waiting for him to finish. The table quieted and
Ophelia glared at me. I ignored her, turning my attention to my father. “I’m
afraid the excitement has made me tired. If you’ll excuse me, I’ll take my
leave.”

“Of course, darling,” my father said.

Ryvin stood. “Please, allow me to escort you safely to your
room.”

“Oh, that is not necessary,” I said.

“I insist,” he smiled, flashing straight white teeth. No sign
of fangs.

My brow furrowed slightly. What exactly was he if not a
vampire? He couldn’t possibly be human, could he?

It didn’t matter what he was. He was a threat.

“That’s very kind, ambassador,” my father said. “Of course,
Ara is happy to accept.”

“Shouldn’t I have a chaperone?” I asked, flashing my most
demure smile.

Ophelia laughed. No, not laughed. Cackled. “I think that ship
has sailed, Ara.”

I narrowed my eyes at her and threw her my nastiest glare.

“I promise, I won’t bite,” Ryvin said.

Ophelia stopped laughing. The whole room went so silent I
swore I could hear the waves crashing against the cliffs in the distance. If I
wasn’t so tense, I might have appreciated the way the color drained from
Ophelia’s face.

“Shall we, princess?” Ryvin offered his elbow, and as if
driven by something outside myself, I complied, sliding my arm into his. I
could feel the eyes of everyone at dinner on us as we exited the dining room.

Rewrites of the Heart

by Terry Newman

Genre: Paranormal Romantic Comedy

.

JJ Spritely, romance author, writes characters that jump off the page. Figuratively, that is. She never expects them to make a literal leap smack dab into her world. But Alex Zurich and Blake Teesdale do just that. And they’re on a mission to help JJ write her own personal love story with a man she recently met, Kennedy King Cooper.

A history professor, Cooper doesn’t see the value of romance novels and he has even less regard for those who write them. Until he meets a woman who haunts his thoughts.

There’s only one small snag in Alex’s and Blake’s plan…okay…two rather large snags. JJ wants nothing to do with Cooper. The other snag? Alex and Blake aren’t able to return to the pages of their own book.

Will JJ and Cooper write their own love story? And will Alex and Blake find their way back to their own world?

What makes a good story?

A story lives or dies by its characters. There seems to be an age-old debate about whether a novel is plot-driven or character-driven. Without three-dimensional likeable characters, there isn’t a story. If the reader doesn’t like your hero, whether it’s a romance or a mystery, then they won’t care about what happens to them. The plot doesn’t matter.

But the best stories, I believe, are those that have a cast of likeable, well-rounded characters. If you can write supporting characters who the readers cheer when they enter a scene, then you’ve got a great story.

What are you currently reading?

I just finished reading The Love Hypothesis, and Love on the Brain, both by Ali Hazelwood. If you love romantic comedies, then you’ll want to grab up these books. I love her writing style. I’ve also recently finished Boyfriend Material, and Husband Material by Alexis Hall. I highly recommend them both.

If your book had a candle, what scent would it be?

I can’t believe I had to think about this. It would be a coffee scent. Of course. Everyone in all my books drinks coffee. Lots and lots of coffee. (And you thought I was going to say something romantic, like rose petals.)

What did you edit out of this book?

I edited several chapters from other characters’ points of view. I was so into creating all my friends, that I wanted each one to have a say in the book. I gave Deb Dilley, the history department secretary, a couple of chapters. I also gave the department chair, Dr. Thomas Chare, several chapters. They are both wonderful supporting characters with personalities of their own.

.

.

Two things you should know about me: I have an offbeat sense of humor and characters are constantly talking to me, trying to get me to tell their stories. Other than that, I’m a normal person.

I’ve spent most of my adult life writing in some fashion, from small-town reporter, to editor-in-chief and ghostwriter for a national natural health publishing firm. The last decade and a half I’ve worked as a freelance writer, penning ebooks that range from starting a doula services business to Native American herbs.

I’ve finally took the plunge to fiction after pushing oh, so many doubts aside. My first novel with The Wild Rose Press, Heartquake, won a 4.5 crowned heart review with Ind’tale Magazine.

All my books are set in fictional towns in northeast Ohio, where I grew up, and I write about things I love—like coffee.

I have a daughter, a son-in-law, and a grandpuppy and live in North Lima, a real town in northeast Ohio with all my characters. Yes, it does get crowded.

Join me in celebrating the release of ALL SIGNS LEAD TO LUCY by Julieann Dove. This women’s fiction romance shares the story of Lucy Fister, who discovers that in the game of love, fate always wins. Check out an excerpt, download your copy and enter the fabulous giveaway.

All Signs Lead to Lucy

Amazon | Goodreads

After living a life of failed, predictable relationships, Lucy Fister took the advice of the psychic who charged sixty dollars for ten minutes: start seeking men who are the absolute opposite of who she dated. It made sense, but paying for the obvious meant it might work.

Tyler Tolliver met that criteria. He was an out of work actor who’d invented the love language ‘have a good time.’ They had a whirlwind relationship and after four months, he proposed, holding a bread tie for a ring, and giving the argument that the lease on his loft was expiring.

One year into her marriage with Tyler, and Lucy was tired of playing Xbox, clubbing, and watching movies before reading the book. She missed conversations deeper than picking where they’d eat, and being in bed before midnight. When her estranged best friend, Vanessa asked her and Tyler to go on a week-long trip to the Caribbean with her new fiancé, Martin VanLeer, Lucy accepted the invitation.

Fate scatters people and plans like a ceiling fan scatters loose papers. On the eve of the trip, Tyler and Vanessa respectively were called to fulfill work related tasks. The new plan was for them to meet up with Lucy and Vanessa’s fiancé in a couple of days.

One week is all it took for Martin and Lucy to fall in love. And for Lucy to realize that psychic was wrong—she didn’t need to find someone opposite of all the guys she dated, she needed to be warned of the millionaire engaged to her best friend. Because if they acted on this attraction, it meant destroying a marriage, a wedding, and a lifelong friendship.

“The captain has been tracking a tropical storm off the coast in the path we are heading.”

My empty stomach dropped. “That doesn’t sound good.” I wanted to want this boat trip, but truth be told, it was Tyler who talked it up more than me. And of course there was us salvaging our torn relationship goal. But I’ve seen Six Days, Seven Nights. And Titanic. And Cast Away. I’m not new here. And now a storm?

Vanessa must’ve felt my heat radiating from where she sat. “Come on, Lucy. It’s fine.” She looked at Martin. “Right, honey? I mean, storms move, right?”

“Right. And that’s what we’re banking on. But we’re going to wait a day to leave. We’ll pull out at lunch tomorrow. That will ensure us that it’s moved out of the way.”

The waitress placed our drinks on the table and took off again.

What, no bread? I punctured my straw through the paper and dipped it in the ice. Ah, refreshing. Vanessa squeezed the lime wedge in her martini and sipped from the edge. Was she impervious to alcohol? Did she have an iron liver?

“How bad is it? I mean, tropical isn’t code for cyclone, right? I mean, hurricanes are still a thing, aren’t they? Don’t they typically name them after women? Maybe this one had a nice, un-destructive name like Eleanor. Or Melanie.” I needed assurance this was raindrops and a breeze, not a rip-off-the-side-of-the-boat and you’re on 60 Minutes thing, being watched by helicopter above while the sharks circled.

His mouth frowned. “I think he said winds of seventy miles per hour.”

My chest heaved. “This is a bad sign. Don’t racecars travel at 100 miles per hour? And they’re hard to watch. That’s only thirty more miles. Per hour.”

“Actually, I believe they travel much faster,” he replied.

Did it matter? Seventy certainly sounded more frightening than a graceful twenty-five. I took another drink. “First my luggage, then it appears Tyler has dropped off the edge of the earth, and now a tropical storm?” I clicked my nail on the tabletop. “No, this is definitely a sign.”

I dream of a time where I was warm, safe, and loved.

But my waking reality is starkly different.

Anxiety plagues me and spirits haunt the shadows. No matter how fast I run, I can’t seem to escape my past.

The only solace and steady force in my life is my best friend, Finn.

And now… there’s a ghost haunting me. And I’m not certain if it wants help or if it wants to kill me. There’s only one person who can understand: Finn’s brother, Damen.

However, in reaching out, I’m betraying Finn and setting things into motion that cannot be undone.

But nobody ever said that doing the right thing was easy.

The Garden of Eternal Flowers is a re-envisioning of my Grimm Cases series. Eternal Flowers has taken my original vision of Bianca’s story and transformed it into something new and beautiful. Some chapters are similar, and some dialogue is the same, as The Grimm Cases, Origins, but overall, about 75% of the book has been entirely revisioned with new plot points, mystery, and interpersonal relationships. Also, unlike Origins (originally a Wattpad release), there is now a clear beginning, climax, and conclusion in each individual novel, which allows them to be read alone or as part of the ongoing series.

I hope that you will enjoy Shadows of Nightshade as much as I enjoyed writing it. Truly, it is an honor to write about Bianca and her boys, and all of these characters are near and dear to my heart.

Trigger Warning: This series deals with the aftermath of severe childhood trauma.

What irony Bryce and my first private conversation would take place because of my weakness. Sleeping in class. It was a shameful thing, and an ultimate insult to educators worldwide.

.
What would he do? I had no idea of the standard procedure for this sort of offense. Getting into trouble at school had been Finn’s job. How did professors punish college students? If the situation were reversed, and Bryce were my student, I would expel him.

Hopefully, he was more forgiving than me.

My unknown future worried me, however. It was high time to research.

However, I wouldn’t look on the internet. Even though my fingers itched to search ‘sneaky professor punishes a bad girl’ to gain an accurate picture of my fate, I suspected it might not be a good idea.

I’d only recently come to terms with the knowledge that I’d been living in a sheltered world. I was hesitant to explore the world out from behind the safe filter I’d been hiding behind.

What if there was a reason? What was so horrible about the internet that made everyone think it was better to hide the truth?

My stomach twisted at the thought of bothering Damen over such a trivial matter. He was an important person. But… I was scared.

He’d said I could text him anytime. Did he mean it?

Not yet. This situation was dire.

The Inn at Little Bend

The Way Home Saga Book 2

.

A DAZZLING BEAUTY…
In antebellum America, life for an abandoned woman was difficult at best. But when young Grayson escapes her sadistic guardian, she finds freedom just as hostile. The lonesome, starving wanderer flees straight into the path of vicious marauders. Only one thing keeps the rustlers from violating the curvaceous, dark-haired beauty but the punishment they intend to mete out for her crimes borders on insanity.

A SURLY COWBOY…
Not far away a lone rover hears the screams, yet continues down the road. He wants nothing more of life than to be left alone. He has his own debts to account for. Once a headstrong irresistible rakehell, the drifter had bolted, shuttered his heart and retreated deep within himself. But now the wafting agony tears at him–his own and the wails of another. Swearing under his breath, he whirls the horse around.

A SIMPLE INN…
Grayson Ridge struggles to survive her fated trials and conceal the secrets that plague her. Her exploits collide with the life of Drake Somerset, a scraggly yet oddly dashing drifter besieged by dark shadows. Neither realizes their chance encounter could free them both. Their wrangling ignites a turbulent journey and sets their worlds on fire.

How to find time to write as a parent.

I can’t say I have a set schedule for writing. I have a set schedule for riding and that is truly where the ideas flow. There’s something about the rocking of my horse’s gait that takes me back to another time and another place.  Once the inspiration hits and the characters become real in my head, I can write for hours or days.

*. *. *

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reins of the story?

When I say my characters become real people, I really mean it.  They wake me up at night.  I can see them sitting across the room, and they blab until I ask them to kindly disappear so I can get some sleep.  When they refuse, I sneak into my studio and, like a court reporter, record everything they are saying.  I must admit most times they are heading me in the right direction.

*. *.  *

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?

Since the mid 1800’s is the timeframe for all my romances, many years ago my mother and I took the dog and travelled to the states where the scenes happened. We visited county seats and perused old newspapers, walked historical areas and graveyards. Of course, with the internet today, all that traveling and reading can be accomplished with the slash of a keystroke (although not half as much fun). Sometimes I can’t achieve the feel of some scenes from the internet though.  For example, I had a fire scene to write and I visited the local fire marshall. Once I had convinced him that I was not an arsonist and really did write romance (and he and the other firemen stopped laughing), we had a great discussion of how the fire scene could be accomplished with accuracy.  As I left, I heard him telling the other firemen I was definitely going to be dinner conversation with his wife that night.  I just smiled.

*.  *.  *

What is your writing process?  For instance do you do an outline first?  Do you do the chapters first?

Every writer has their own unique writing process. I search the public domain and find pictures of what my hero and heroine look like in my head.  Then I frame their faces and place the frames on my desk as I write.  When I am in the hero’s head, I stare at the heroine’s face and vice versa. For me this helps the dialogue flow naturally. I write down a general idea of how the plot will move forward from beginning to end, but I must say I do not rigidly adhere to an outline, not do I write the chapters consecutively.  The reason for this is because once my characters come alive in my head, scenes have a tendency to change.  For example, as I wrote my first romance, Season of the Shadow, I knew exactly what would happen when the hero entered the barn.  However, when he arrived I was shocked at how the hero and heroine had rearranged the scene.  I liked what they had done and  wrote the scene their way.  Hearing about this 3am occurrence, my husband often taps my shoulder while I write and asks, “Anybody talking to you yet?”

*.  *.  *

Advice you would give new authors.

Storylines can spring from anywhere…a song on the radio, a conversation at a dinner party, or the view from a ski lift chair.  Best advice I could give is…just write.  Write for yourself.  Write for the sheer joy of creating something from nothing.  Remember, as the writer, you are omnipotent and that’s a powerful feeling.  When you are feeling sad, use that emotion to write sad scenes.  Do the same with happiness.  Those emotions will flow into your words and make scenes truly believable.  Write the ideas that pop into your head.  Don’t worry about the grammar or the spelling or searching for just the right word.  All those things will come later.  Don’t allow any of those things to stop the flow of ideas because, at least for me, if I don’t scribble the ideas I lose them and many times they don’t come back.  Then I’m left saying, “What was that thought I had? Geez…and it was such a good idea.”  Keep pencil and paper by your bed for those magical ‘ah hah’ moments when your characters come alive and tell you how they want their story written.  In the car or on my horse I simply use my voice recorder.  Just scribble whenever the ideas flow and, before long, those ramblings will take shape.

*.  *.  *

Fun Facts/Behind the Scenes/Did You Know?

Before pen to paper…Inside The Grey…This novel was composed entirely on horseback.  The ideas flowed, and I bounced portions of the plot with my fellow riders as we galloped through the fields.  Jumping fences dressed in our finery to keep up with thirty hounds on the scent, transported us back in time. When I returned to present day, I simply wrote about my day in the past.

Before pen to paper…The Inn At Little Bend…Within one year I lost three people I loved dearly, and I retreated to my studio.  It seemed only there could I make sense of things and force the capricious fates to bend to my will.  Drake and Grayson are struggling with their own losses, searching for the realization that they, too, can survive the anguish.

Before pen to paper… Season of The Shadow…I was recovering from a serious neck and head injury when these characters came to life.  I have since learned to compensate but the injury severely affected my inner ear and my balance for years.  Fletcher’s affliction intrudes on his life as it did mine.  Other parts of the storyline are based on actual happenings in my life as are the surroundings.  My grandmother’s home (since demolished) had been built by a bootlegger with hidden compartments, peepholes, and tunnels leading to the river.  The home’s uniqueness was our parents’ nightmare but a child’s delight.

*. *.  *

What can we expect from you in the future?

A new story is on the computer with the working title, ‘TruDeceit.’ The blurb is on my website.

www.Bobbiscorner.com   Readers will recognize several previous characters entering and exiting as the time frame has progressed twenty years into the late 1860’s.  The beginning chapter has been written, and I know the general plotline. However I am still searching for images to frame so my new hero (Rafe) and new heroine (yet to be named) can develop into real people.   Once that happens, the three of us will be off and running.

.
.

I’m a wife, a mother, a writer and an equestrienne. I’ve been composing stories as long as I can remember and have been putting stories to paper ever since I could hold a pencil. I have a vivid memory from age five where I sat alone in the stall of my father’s horse and traced the hood prints in the dirt. An entire story swirled about in my head…who, what, where, when? My family often grew weary of my constant ramblings about my characters. As a result, my drawers were stuffed with stories, finished and unfinished. It wasn’t until my two wonderful boys were born that I finally had the nerve to submit my first book. Fun In The Yellow Pages, a juvenile coming of age novel, was my first publication. It was well received and actually utilized in several school districts. I even had the compliment of being ‘visiting author’ which was very enjoyable. The students constantly asked me to write a sequel.

I actually switched to romance writing on a dare from my husband. I completed Season Of The Shadow. The characters were so popular that they wormed their way into my second romance, The Inn At Little Bend, and played key roles in my latest romance, Inside The Grey. Each romance can stand alone, but my readers will recognize several characters.

One Helluva Gig

by Kevin R. Doyle

Genre: Romance

Synopsis

Rob Jeffers has it all: fame, money, and the life of a rock and roll star. Frank Peters is a regular guy, a newspaper reporter who just happens to have a passing acquaintance with the Great Jeffers. As Jeffers’s career shoots up, Peters’s fortunes follows in his wake.

And when Jeffers passes away at the height of his fame, Peters’s life begins a steady unravelling. Until a chance encounter on a minor story gives him a new outlook on the celebrity lifestyle, and new hope for his own future.

Enjoy this peek inside:

Off to my right, a slight, average-sized guy came running along. He was wearing the pants and vest of a denim leisure suit, a garish, flowered polyester/Hawaiian shirt with the first five buttons opened up and sandals. Skidding to a stop in front of me, he looked about as confused as I felt at the moment.

“’Scuse me,” he said, “is this the place for the concert?”

I looked around at all the people flocking in our direction, listened to the squealing of the collection of cuties on the other side of the door.

“Yeah,” I said, “but good luck getting in. The place is packed.”

“Really? Cool!” He took off his mirrored sunglasses, and for the first time, I saw the eyes that, in years to come, would stare out from a billion or so album covers.

“Hey,” he said, “you a student here?”

“Yeah, but…”

“You think you can show me how to get in? Like there’s a service entrance or something, isn’t there? I’m with the band, and I’m running late.”

I clenched up. One of the oldest con lines in the world is “I’m with the band.” But something in the man’s look told me to take a chance.

“I think I can get you in, but I need something in return.”

“Yeah?” Now the “guy with the band” seemed uneasy. “What’s that?”

“Well, you see,” I said, “I’m with the student paper…”

STRONG WOMEN OF FACT AND FICTION #girlpower

What’s the definition of a strong woman? Would you define female strength different than male strength? In days gone by, I think we did, but the lines have blurred especially in fiction. Kick-ass women heroines are extremely popular. Girl Power!

The fact is, even in real life the lines have blurred. Take for instance, FDW and me. June 22 is our wedding anniversary. For the first thirty-seven years of our marriage, my husband always surprised me with a gift or greeting…surprised because I never remembered the date. Now, that’s just backwards. Women are supposed to be the sentimental ones, right? Then one year, we moved into a house with a new phone number. This is back a few years when everyone had landlines. The phone number ended with 22. At last, something I could relate, make a connection, give me a hint to the date we were married! I’ve remembered the date ever since. FDW is mushier than I am. Nowadays—we can admit such things.

The heroines of my Wild Horse Peaks books have varying degrees of physical strength, but, for me, inner strength makes for a more compelling story: living through the deaths of parents and a husband; standing up to a stalker; leading a double life to avoid a murderer; surviving abuse; facing a Nazi mad-woman. Each woman endures hardships and comes out on the other side with a shining inner strength.

What’s your definition of a strong woman? Do you prefer the muscle variety packing a gun? Do the women of the west, enduring hardships and loneliness strike a chord? Do you enjoy reading about heroines whose attitude says everything about strength?

Mia St. James

Men want me. I rev their engines.
No, really, it’s my job to make their cars go faster.
Some say I’m the perfect woman—but not Gus Quinlan.
In college, I knew not to lose my heart to him. Yet, he still managed to break it.
Years later, he helps me land a dream job with a women-led race team.
He even invites me to be his roommate—that’s how far in the “friend zone” I am.
Until he kisses me and promises I’m more.

Some say I’m sharp, others say clever…but when it comes to Gus, I can be such a fool.
Is my heart strong enough to give him a second chance when the smart thing to do is to leave him in the rearview mirror?

Gus Quinlan

In my life, I have women I date and friends who are women…and then there is Mia St. James.
She crashes into my well-constructed world with the sweetness I remember
and a new sexy confidence that has me spinning my wheels.
My friends warn me not to cross that line.
Until we’re on a romantic beach under the moonlight, and…come on—I couldn’t not kiss her.

When forced to relive a trauma, I misread the data and destroy our bond.
I can rebuild a hundred-thousand-dollar engine…but how do I repair us?

Read a teaser…

Screw this, she can tell me why she’s prickly later. I turned on the charm. Stepping closer, I reached for her hand, softly taking it between both of mine as two lovers would. I stared up at her from beneath my lashes, leaning forward and brushing my lips across her cheek, drawing back slowly and deepening my voice. “Hey there, Mia Darlin’”

She pulled her hand out of mine, shoved my chest, her other hand on her hip. She fought it—the laughter, but the smirk wouldn’t be denied. “What have I told you about calling me darlin’? And wipe that stupid grin off your face, your charms and good looks don’t work on me, remember?”

I threw my head back and laughed, dragging her in for a true hug.

She softened in my hug and patted my back, accepting the greeting as I rocked her back and forth.

Harper and CJ walked up behind us, one of them commenting, “Oh, yeah. She’ll fit in just fine.”
