Enjoy this exclusive peek inside chosen by Carlie herself!

There was another group in the Steakarama; six lads seemed to be out on the razz just like us and were laughing and joking as much as we were. I glanced over and was delighted to see some serious eye candy. Nudging Sadie, who sat next to me, I inclined my head in the other group’s direction.

“Looky over there and tell me I’m not seeing things,” I said grinning. Sadie swiveled her head and did a double-take.

“Phwoar! Which one do you want?” Sadie replied waggling her eyebrows at me.

I laughed. “Hmmm, haven’t decided yet. Better make up my mind fast before the others see them.” Glancing up I saw it was too late as four pairs of eyes swept lasciviously in the lads’ direction. “I saw them before you lot so I get first dibs!” I announced, my eyes gently challenging.

A few good-natured grumbles later, they generously agreed. I turned my head almost casually in their direction and noticed a pair of startling blue eyes gazing back at me. Fluttering my eyelashes and playing coy, I smiled and was pleased when it was returned.

“Ooo, looks like Remy’s pulled!” Sadie announced, giggling.

“Which one?” Kelly demanded, her eyes automatically ogling the six lads.

“Ahhh! The blonde Adonis,” Sadie replied, sighing for effect.

I dragged my eyes back to the table and grinned at my companions. “You can divvy up the rest between you now,” I said magnanimously and revelled in the laughter which swept around our table.

There were quite a few meaningful looks being exchanged between our two tables. The girls were on fine form and some of the comments caused much hilarity.

“See the one in the green shirt?” Kelly asked. “I wouldn’t kick him out of bed on a cold, dark night!”

Christy, who was always the most outspoken and outrageous of us all, piped up with, “I want the one in the black shirt. I’d strip him naked, pour warm chocolate sauce all over those muscles of his and lick it all off . . . slowly.”

“I’ve got a hankering for whipped cream and cherries,” Lorraine said. We all turned to stare at her; she was normally the quiet one who never spoke out. A faint flush filled her cheeks.

“Get you! They say the quiet ones are the worst,” I chuckled and Lorraine grinned back at me.

“I don’t need all that kinky stuff – just gimme one of them stud-muffins and mamma will look after him real good!” Hanna rolled her eyes before continuing. “Anyone got any spare condoms?”

“I’ve only got apple and orange flavoured ones,” Sadie replied, arching her eyebrows and licking her lips. More laughter followed and I had to dab at my eyes with the napkin.

A few minutes later, we left the Steakarama and headed to the nightclub a few doors away.

Book Description:

…Death was a dream of sleep where the eternally dying dream the sleep of death.  The undeniable evidence in the stillness of her being, the stark paleness of her complexion, and the lack of blood pooling from her cuts after climbing through the window whispered dark truths in her ears.  Rigor Mortis.  There was nothing familiar to Jamie about her skin.  Time and time again, she found herself asking what had happened, only to arrive at the hard won conclusion that she, Jamie Lund, wasn’t alive anymore.  Somehow in the foolhardy night, she’d been a dumb girl.  She’d gotten herself killed…

From the mind of Stavros, the critically acclaimed author of Blood Junky, comes a new twisted tale of horror and adventure.  An average girl, living in the city is murdered.  Nothing new, right?  It happens every day.  Just another statistic.  That is…until she woke up dead.

Trapped within her own decaying shell, the dead girl struggles to piece together the awful events of her untimely death and hunt down the man responsible.  Armed only with a kiss from an ancient Egyptian God, a pockmarked memory, her ex-boyfriend, and a murder of crows Jamie Lund comes face to face with something more terrifying and real than mere death…she suffers the agony of being undead!

With twelve black & white illustrations and a full colored cover from tattoo artist, Charles Hearn, this sardonic tale comes alive like no other zombie story, popping from the page with stunning, unnatural brilliance.  Dead Girl: A Romantic Zombie Tale of Revenge will keep the reader on the edge of their seat suspended in this unique supernatural thriller.

My Review

Jamie’s story begins and ends on the bank of the river.

Pulling her battered body from the cold, sucking mud, she’s disoriented, with no memory of how she got there or who she is.

In the distance she can see the lights from a city. The only other thing she sees is crows. Lots of them.

On auto pilot, she heads toward town and manages to get to her apartment. With no purse or keys, she’s forced to break a window to get in.

Once inside, she takes a look at herself. There’s a lot of blood but nothing is bleeding anymore. Her neck has bruises and her eyes are blood shot.

She moves on to what happened. How did she end up on the riverbank, why can’t she remember what happened last night?

She stumbles to her bed. As she lies there, some memories are returning. She gets flashes of a party and a man following her into a bedroom. Maybe someone slipped her a roofie.

As she lay there, the hours pass. When she tries to rise, she can’t move. She can’t even wiggle a toe! Then it sets in. The signs are now clear. Rigor Mortis!

At 22 years old, Jamie has been murdered.

She can’t go to the police for help so she turns to her ex-boyfriend Billy.  But how to tell him she’s dead?

And those crows continue to follow her.

Jamie may technically be a zombie, but I think of her more as reanimated. She doesn’t go around moaning, “Brains…” and doesn’t eat humans.

The only thing she craves is vengeance. She’s determined to confront whoever did this to her, even if it kills her…again.

The story is told from two perspectives, Jamie’s and Billy’s, which works well as these two used to be lovers and it explains why Billy would go to the lengths he did to help Jamie.

There are some laughable moments too. As Jamie’s body slowly begins to decompose, Billy gets creative with the duct tape. And when the maggots eventually make their appearance, Jamie starts naming them.

There’s also a surprising element in the story that shows how Jamie came back from the dead.

Dead Girl is creative, funny, and sad. I especially liked the ending. It was perfect.

I recommend Dead Girl to zombie fans and those who like some humor, some get what’s comin to ya, and some gore with their love story.

5 Stars

Quotes I liked:

“Crows swarmed above her as a single mood.”

“Millions of nerve endings reported nothingness back at her.”

“Even in death she was beautiful and that beauty gnawed at Billy’s gut with teeth.”

“…Jamie wanted this maniac, this destroyer or youth…to taste the river as she had, and feel death’s cold embrace as she had – slow and sinking.”

 Praise for Dead Girl: A Romantic Zombie Tale of Revenge…

“A Bittersweet punch with a suspenseful plot and somber romance, showing us the vulnerable perspective of death from the other side.  Definitely, not to be missed!” -Tara Lindsey Hall; Writer/Editor

“I couldn’t put it down. I loved it.  You are a great writer.  Can’t wait to read the next one.” -Bethany Tanner-Evanko, a Facebook Post

“Just wanted you to know…I was about to wrap Dead Girl in festive Christmas paper but decided to read the first page…now I’m on page 88 and I’m keeping the book…and I’m not going to bed anytime soon.” -Sabrina Buckman, a Facebook Post on Dec 21, 2011

“WOW!  Holy shit…Thank you for this.  Thank you for bringing forth a story that more than restores my faith in a type that has gnawed at my entrails for over a decade.  It was different, it was refreshing, it was a damn awesome break from the “same old, same old” crap this genre is filled with.  It’s so hard to find an original zombie tale any more.  And even harder to find someone who can make an old story their own in some personal way.  But this?  Definitely not the same old crap.”

-C. Dulaney, author of the Roads Less Traveled series

“OMZG! (Oh My Zombie Goodness)  I absolutely Loved this book. Dead Girl is not the conventional zombie book, but a great one!  It’s a book of mystery and revenge with Egyptian influence felt within the pages. Plus the actual attention to detail of rigor mortis and decomposition of the body is spot on and a great additive to the book.  I love this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good revenge tale.  Plus I couldn’t put the book down!”

-Sunshine Rose, Chicago, ILL. April 2013

Book Description

Adriana can’t decide which is harder— living in post-Katrina New Orleans or living with two immortal brothers. Ana and Hayden are finally together but Hayden’s brother Luke is trying to come between them… and he’s never been known to play fair. While Ana still attempts to cling to her normal life, psychic visions take over her dreams. With Mardi Gras season approaching and a vision of a murder, Ana will find out if she can really change the future or if she’s just upsetting a very delicate balance. What she could never predict was just how far Luke would go to satisfy his obsession…

How about a little peek inside!

As I went to follow them, Luke stopped me. I stared at his hand curled around my arm, acutely aware of his touch.

When I looked up at him, his eyes became stormy. He licked his lips and then bent down to whisper in my ear. The heat of his breath tickled the sensitive area of my neck as he whispered, “ You can’t expect me to play nice, when you wear something like that. I’m afraid I simply won’t be able to keep my hands off of you.”

My jaw dropped open. His words appalled me—and at the same time excited me.

I recovered my composure. “You’d better keep your hands off me, unless you want me to break your fingers.” I gave him my best menacing smile. Where was this side of me coming from? Strangely, I knew.

“Ohh,” his chest rumbled with laughter. “Is that a threat or a promise?”

“Both.” I snapped as he slowly made his way around to my other ear. This had to stop.

“I look forward to any time where you touch me.” He had circled me, like he was a vulture and I was his prey.

“You’re disgusting!”

“We’ll talk more of what I am later, love. Right now, your friends are waiting.” At his last words, he left me there in the hallway, weak-kneed and boiling with anger.

“No, we will not talk about this later!” I called after him, but it was too late, I had already heard the door to the garage open. And he’d had the last word.

Hurricane (Hurricane #1)

Adriana couldn’t decide what was worse—that Hurricane Katrina was heading for New Orleans, or that she might not survive her kidnapping to see its potential effects. She had trusted Hayden, even fallen for him, and now he and his brother Luke were taking her deeper and deeper into the Bayou. Why had two of her classmates, the mysterious Boudreaux brothers, kidnapped her? Why had Adriana’s dreams started predicting the future? Most importantly, would she make it out of the Bayou alive…

Let’s get to know Leah, shall we?

Character Interview with Leah –  Prior to Lost

So, Leah … or is it Christine?

Leah is what the nuns named me at my school. My real name is Christine.

Which one would you like me to call you?

Whichever you want.

Okay, I’ll go with Leah. First, I want you to relax. I know what you’re hiding. Your secret is safe with me. Okay?

Okay.

So when did you first realize you weren’t … human?

It sort of becomes apparent when you can’t seem to think of another room without accidently moving to it.

That must have been scary. I guess I can answer my next question on my own, then. I was going to ask if you had one wish, what would it be. I’d bet it would be to be human. Am I right?

Yeah. Life would be … uh … simpler that way.

Tell me a little about the disguise you keep up. How do you hide your powers?

It’s difficult. I have to be quiet and careful. I have to watch my every move. But I’m still alive so … I obviously don’t suck at it too much.

Obviously. Hats off to you. Have you picked up anything from imitating a human? Do you have typical teenage quirks? A favorite color or food?

I guess I have a favorite food. If oranges count.

Yeah, that counts. What about other typical high school things? Do you have a most embarrassing moment?

There’s too many to choose from. Let me see. Eighth grade, right after a math test I’d completely bombed. I’d been fighting with my magic all day. It seemed like every time I moved, something else in the classroom would move with me. So naturally, I’d stopped moving. A girl I hate, Sienna, screamed my name from the back of class and asked if I was constipated. I guess I looked kind of constipated. Anyway, I tried to move so I wouldn’t look as strange, and the American flag hanging over the chalkboard crashed to Sister Margaret’s desk. Scared out of my mind, I ran out of class. Of course, everyone thought I ran to the bathroom because of stomach issues. They called me Pepto for weeks.

Yikes, that’s embarrassing, all right. It doesn’t sound like you have friends, so what do you do in your spare time?

I draw. I’m pretty good at it. I did a full-scale sketch of the orphanage with shading and everything when I was six. That should have tipped me off that I wasn’t normal.

That sounds spectacular. Do you see yourself becoming an artist when you grow up?

Grow up? I’ve never thought about it. I guess I’ll have to pray that I’ll live long enough to make career decisions. Wish me luck.

Good luck. That’s for chatting with me today.

Excerpt

Once more dressed in jeans and her well-worn cowboy boots, with a jacket thrown on to ward off the chill evening air, Phoenix walked.

Against a backdrop of blue-green mountain peaks and the lightly wooded hillsides closer to the farm, the hens were settling in their coop, with only an occasional soft clucking.

Inside the boldly painted red barn, horses whickered in their stalls. She breathed deeply of the scents of horse and hay as she ambled through the dusty structure, then opened the side door and walked into the llama’s pasture.

The male immediately approached her and nuzzled her cheek as she slung her arm around him. “I love you too, Romeo.”

She closed her eyes and relaxed against the animal’s woolly neck. However, her relaxation ended abruptly when the animal stiffened and emitted a shrill cry.

Following the animal’s gaze, Phoenix saw CJ standing on the other side of the corral with his arms folded on the top board. “Will your llama spit in my face?”

“It’s alright, Romeo.” Phoenix patted the llama, then walked slowly toward the man who had occupied too much of her thoughts lately. “What brings you out this way?”

“You left the Governor’s presentation right after you talked to Mitch. I wanted to be sure you were okay.”

All the memories she had been trying to walk off slammed into Phoenix once more. “What is okay? I’m not sure I’ve ever been okay or ever will be. How can I find normal or happy when I don’t think I’ve experienced those things?”

“You come up your own version of what makes you happy.”

“A woman is dead because of me. How can I ever be happy knowing that?”

“Mitch said Swaggerty was waiting for Charlene. If it hadn’t been that night, he would have killed her another way.”

Phoenix let that statement sink in. One part of her brain knew that was true. So why did she cling to the blame for Charlene’s death? Maybe she was afraid to move forward.

I’m an optimist whose rose-colored glasses have bent frames and cracked lenses. When life kicks me in the teeth, I find miracles and lessons I refused to learn an easier way. In fact, I live with a small herd of miracles in the furry forms of dogs, who are constantly trying to teach me to forgive, to play more, and to love without limits. I write about people who find courage and integrity in the darkest times of their lives, who rescue stray dogs and kittens, who find a person they would willingly give their lives for, and who make their little corners of the world a better place. People have remarked my stories “aren’t what they expected.” With rose-colored glasses firmly in place, I take that as a compliment. I invite you to share a piece of my world in the pages of a book, and hope you find some surprises, some tears, some laughter, and always a happy ending.

Now Kate has to juggle work, men, her mom’s most recent disaster involving a low-speed John Deere Combine chase on the freeway, and fend off the Mormons heaven-bent on saving her soul—all while solving Chelsea’s murder. Dealing with this is going to require a lot of coffee, chocolate frosted donuts, Neil Diamond’s greatest hits, and a slew of words not on the town approved imitation swear list.

About Destiny Ford:

As a child, Angela Corbett’s most prized possession was a set of read-along books. She used to follow along with the narrator on the stereo and dream of when she would be able to read by herself. Her childhood reading habit led her to consider her future career. However, after consulting with her parents, she realized she had already exceeded hobbit height and since fairies and dragonslayers were tricky jobs to get, she decided she wanted to create worlds of her own. She started writing poetry in elementary school and worked as a journalist in high school and college, but could never leave her love for writing fiction behind.

She is a graduate of Westminster College where she double majored in communication and sociology. She has worked as a journalist, freelance writer, and director of communications and marketing. She loves classic cars, traveling, and escaping in a good book. She lives in Utah with her incredibly supportive husband and their five-pound Pomeranian, Pippin, whose following of fangirls could rival Justin Bieber’s.

Eternal Starling is her debut novel and the first book in the Emblem of Eternity trilogy.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT FROM HEARTSEARCH: FOUND, BOOK II

“NO!” we yelled in unison then Jakki continued, “Becky, trust me. It’s not safe – you mustn’t go out there.” Anxiety was etched into her features, overflowing into her tone. Becky raised one eyebrow, hesitating. She knew Jakki was particularly sensitive to elements around her and with her psychic abilities was virtually never wrong when she made comments with such conviction in her voice.

“So what do we do then?” Becky asked.

Jakki didn’t hesitate. “First, make sure all the doors and windows are locked, especially in the twin’s room, then we’ll go from there.” Without waiting for another comment, Jakki strode to the back door and checked it. I ran upstairs to the nursery while Becky checked the front door and lounge windows.

We were all seated again within minutes. Becky was the first to pierce the silence.

“So now what?”

Jakki raised her eyes. “There’s something not quite right. I sense danger, but not . . . evil. It’s weird. My spirit guides are saying that whoever is out there is tenacious and he’s not going to give up until he gets what he wants. The big question is what exactly does he want?” There was an edge to her voice we had never heard before and it made us anxious.

“So do we phone the police or what?” I asked, a frown crinkling my forehead and my lips tightening into a thin line.

Jakki stared at me as if searching for something in my face; a couple of minutes passed before she spoke.

“The police can’t really help you,” she replied sadly.

What? Why not?” My voice rose an octave as I blurted out my questions.

“To be honest, I don’t think they can help with this, unless they’re willing to sit outside your house every night for the foreseeable future . . .” Pity clouded Jakki’s features as she stared at me from below her lashes.

“Jaks, please stop talking in riddles. What do you mean?” I was exasperated that she wasn’t giving me a straight answer and my tone was sharp.

Jakki glanced at Becky before turning her attention back to me. She stared directly into my eyes, her voice so quiet I had to strain to hear it.

“What I mean is . . . he’s not exactly . . . human.”

BLURB

In the world of PR, there’s only one crime worse than killing a deal—killing a client.

Aspiring actress and office temp Isobel Spice finds a warm welcome at Dove & Flight Public Relations, thanks to her old school friend Katrina Campbell. However, the atmosphere chills considerably when Isobel unwittingly serves an important client a deadly dose of poisoned coffee. Her stalwart temp agent, James Cooke, rushes to her aid, but balks when he learns that the victim was the fraternity brother who got him expelled from college. News that Dove & Flight is being acquired by an international conglomerate quickly supplants the murder as the hot topic of office gossip, but Isobel is convinced the two events are related. When all roads of inquiry lead back to Katrina, Isobel is forced to consider the possibility that her friend’s killer instincts go beyond public relations.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt
Isobel Spice stared at the handsome young man slumped over his coffee cup and thought desperately: not again.
She carefully set her tray of melon chunks and assorted pastries on the credenza at the side of the windowless conference room and tiptoed over to the solitary figure at the large oval table.
He’d probably just dozed off. Or maybe he’d passed out. There was no reason to think he was dead just because she’d stumbled across a dead body in an office once before.
But something about the angle of the young man’s body was just plain wrong. Isobel gingerly pressed her fingers against the pale, slender wrist. She’d never been good at locating a pulse, even on herself—she’d lied to many an exercise instructor over the years—but somehow she knew that in this case, if there were a pulse to be found, she would be able to find it.
There was nothing. Not even the faintest throb.
Isobel let the man’s hand drop back onto the table. His gold signet ring cracked loudly against the wood, startling her. She turned his hand over and was disproportionately relieved to find the ruby-colored stone still intact within its school crest. Isobel gently released his hand and slipped out into the hallway, her panic rising as she gathered steam and burst into Katrina Campbell’s office.
“Your client is dead!”
BLURB:
Penelope Manchester, a good witch with one green and one blue eye, awaits her destiny: a warrior of God with the face of an angel, the heart of a saint, and eyes which match her own. St. Michael the Archangel flies into her life and sweeps her off her feet. Meanwhile, an evil sorcerer captures witches, steals their powers and most of their nine lives, and shrinks them to the size of a doll–a Nürnberg, doll. But when he turns two of the Manchester witches into dolls, the Manchester clan fights back with St. Michael and divine intervention. Armed with the legendary copper cauldron, a fire breathing dragon, and an arsenal of spells, good battles evil.
“The battle against the devil, which is the principle task of St. Michael the archangel, is still being fought today because the devil is still alive and active in the world.”
–Pope John Paul II
Prologue
“Can you tell me a bedtime story, Great-Grandma?” Penelope asked.
The nine-year old girl looked at her great-grandmother whose eyes matched her own, one blue and one green. She lay in her pink bedroom on the second floor of the ancestral mansion located in the Garden District of New Orleans. Penelope, born in this house, represented the seventh generation of Manchester Witches to live here.
“Of course, my dear. Which story would you like to hear? Or do I even need to ask?” Violet said, smiling.
“You know the one, my favorite,” Penelope answered. She laid her small head down. Her long black hair spread across the pillow.
“I love this story too. Once upon a time, there was a young woman named Penelope. Her beautiful long black hair hung to her tiny waist. Her pale skin gave her a beautiful, youthful complexion. She possessed the most unique and treasured eyes, one blue and one green. One day, she will meet her one true love, her soul mate, her destiny. He is a warrior of God, with the face of an angel, the heart of a saint, and eyes which match her own,” Violet said.
“Thank you, Great-Grandma. When are Mommy and Daddy coming home?” Penelope asked.
“Your parents are busy fighting bad people. I hope they’ll be home very soon.”
“Why didn’t Grandma Beatrice go with them this time?” Penelope asked.
“Beatrice wanted to stay behind and keep an eye on us,” Violet replied.
“Why do we have to keep our powers a secret?” Penelope asked.
“Because it scares people,” Violet said.
“Am I really the youngest Manchester Witch to receive her powers?” Penelope asked.
“Yes, you are. You will be a very powerful and very good witch. It is part of your destiny. Your true love will be very powerful too. But your children will be even more powerful than you,” Violet explained.
“When can we go see another Church of St. Michael?” Penelope asked. She looked over at the wall behind her great-grandmother. She stared at the painting of St. Michael the Archangel, her family’s patron saint.
“We just went to the one in Charleston. How many St. Michael’s churches do you want to visit?” Violet asked.
“I want to go to all of them.”
“What is your infatuation with St. Michael the Archangel?” Violet asked.
“He’s the one I’m going to marry. He is my destiny,” Penelope said, smiling as she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
My Review
Copper Cauldron opens with Penelope at bedtime. Her great-grandmother Violet tells her favorite bedtime story about Penelope, a young witch with one blue eye and one green eye. She is descended from a long line of Manchester witches with this unique trait.
One day, she will meet her soul mate, her destiny.
He will be a warrior of God, handsome and pure of heart, with eyes like hers.
Flash 20 years later. Penelope has grown into a beautiful young woman and she is obsessed with the churches of St. Michael.
Ever since she was young, she’s believed St Michael is her soul mate and she searches for him all over the world.
While on vacation and visiting yet another church, she sees a man slip past her vision. When she looks up to a portrait of St. Michael she is stunned. The man could be his spitting image.
She searches, but never sees him again.
Penelope meets up with her friend, Cat, a Manchester witch from the Scottish line, who’s with her on vacation.
Cat needs a rare ingredient for her potions and they head to a biergarten in Nurnberg to get it.
There, they meet the charming wizard, Marcus.
He is all too eager to assist these beautiful witches and lures them to the cellar.
Penelope gazes upon the walls lined with dolls. Something twitches in her memories.
Cat’s powers of foresight save them from the clutches of the evil sorcerer, but he’s not finished with them yet.
He’ll come for them, for all of the witches. No one is safe, and they rush to prepare for his coming.
Copper Cauldron is a fast read. Only around 100 pages.
It starts like a happily ever after fairy tale and quickly becomes a race to defeat an evil wizard, bent on stealing all of their powers so he can be immortal.
I really liked Penelope. She never gave up on her destiny, even when her mother scoffed at her childish dreams, and it seemed like she would never find him.
She stuck to her guns and would not settle for anyone less.
When it looks like all is lost, Penelope becomes her strongest. She doesn’t falter, and steps bravely towards her destiny.
I read this book quickly, only pausing once to cool off in the pool. A great summer read for all ages.
Book Description:
Tessa Von Hellengaard is a real witch. Magical spells aside, she’s snarky and selfish, and the other witches in her silent spell coven are fed up with her. Their plan to reform Tessa involves taking away her magic, saddling her with one hundred extra pounds, and sending her to a weight loss spa.
For good measure they call in Liam Kennedy, a charming and sexy fairy godfather, to teach her some manners. Desperate to regain her magic and determined to shed the weight, Tessa soon realizes that protecting her heart from Liam will prove to be her greatest challenge.
~~~~~~~~

While I didn’t have time to finish Witch Weigh before the tour, I can tell you how I feel about what I’ve read so far.

Yes, Tessa is snarky and selfish in the beginning. You want to shake her and say, “Heh, you’re driving everyone away. Snap out of it.”

I like snarky characters, to a point.

Her fellow witches come up with a plan and it’s a doozy.

So far, I’m having a fun read and even though Tessa put me off in the beginning, I’m fully committed to seeing her come around and can’t wait to see what happens with Liam.

The author is offering this book for free right now and I recommend you hop right over here and get yours.

It’s just now getting real interesting!
