My Teaser for this week is from

 The Kill Switch

A Tucker Wayne Novel #1

by James Rollins

and Grant Blackwood

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Teaser from page 122 in the paperback.

“Hold.”

He steps to the nearest cover: a fallen log musky with rot and mold. He drops to his belly, legs under him, muscles tense and hard, ready to ignite when needed. He awaits the next command, knowing his partner watches as intently as he does. It finally comes.

“Move In. Close Scout.”

~~~~~
I  loved this book.  The bond between Tucker and his canine partner, Kane, is so thrilling.
I’m waiting on my copy of the next book, War Hawk, to arrive in my mailbox and can’t wait to read it!
~~~~~

Synopsis

From bestselling authors James Rollins and Grant Blackwood, the first installment in an exciting new thriller series based on the Sigma Force novels featuring former Army Ranger Tucker Wayne and his partner, Army working dog Kane, introduced in the New York Times bestseller Bloodline and the e-original story “Tracker.”

Former Army Ranger Tucker Wayne and his military working dog Kane are recruited by Sigma Force to extract a Russian pharmaceutical magnate from Siberia. A scientific genius, the drug tycoon holds the biological key to a new weapon system, a danger engineered from the ancient past to terrorize the modern world.

From the frozen steppes of Russia to the sun-blasted savannahs of Africa, Tucker and Kane must piece together a mystery going back to the origins of life on Earth—before the ancient peril can destroy the heartland of America, and with it, all of humankind.

My Teaser for this week is from

 Mercury Retrograde

Dark Alchemy #2

by Laura Bickle

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Teaser from 78% of the eBook.

Gabe held the coyote while she succeeded in sticking duct tape to his fur. When she was finished, it looked like she had a coyote dressed in a pink poodle suit. He glowered at her, clearly resenting the loss of the last bit of street cred he owned.

She grabbed him one last time and wrapped a piece of welding blanket around him like a cape.

“There. Now you look like a Jedi.”

This seemed to be acceptable. Sig snorted.

I’ve read several of Laura’s books and always love her characters. Sig is a favorite of mine.

This is from a scene where they are about to go up against the basilisk and she’s trying to protect Sig from it’s venom.

~~~~~
My Review
Lots of stuff happening in this second book. Too much to tell without spoiling it for you. I’ll do my best.
We’re back with Petra and her loyal coyote companion, Sig, and they are quickly drawn into the mystery of a giant serpent slithering through the park, killing in horrific ways. The hunt is on.
And Gabe and the other Hanged Men are also hunting the Basilisk. They need its blood to save the alchemy tree that gives them life. It’s dying and the serpents blood might be their last chance to save it, and themselves.
Something kept me from falling immediately in love with this one. Not sure what, but by the end, the author got five stars out of me. I adore Petra, Sig, and Gabe. And she always gives me the most spectacular villains to vote off the island.
I’m in luck and have the third book sitting right beside me. Off to more mad adventures and danger with some favorite characters.
5 Stars
Synopsis
Something venomous has come to Temperance …
It’s been two months since Petra Dee and her coyote sidekick Sig faced off against Temperance’s resident alchemist, but things are far from quiet. When an Internet video of a massive snake in the backcountry of Yellowstone goes viral, a chase for the mythical basilisk is on. Monster hunters swarm into the area, and never one to pass up the promise of discovery, Petra joins in the search.
Among the newcomers is a snake cult on wheels―the biker gang Sisters of Serpens. Unlike some, the Sisters don’t want to kill the basilisk―they want to worship it. But things get complicated when the basilisk develops a taste for human flesh that rivals the Sisters’ own murderous skills.
Meanwhile, the alchemical tree of life is dying, and the undead Hanged Men of Temperance who depend on it know the basilisk may be their last chance for survival.
With time running out for everyone around her, Petra will be forced to decide who survives and who she must leave behind in this action-packed sequel to Dark Alchemy.
I’ve read the first book, Dark Alchemy. Click on the cover for my review.
And I’ll be reviewing the third book, Nine Of Stars on December 21st.
I’ve also read the first book in her Hallowed Ones Series.
And enjoyed the first two books in her Anya Kalinczyk Series.
by Laura Bickle
25943818
Genre: Fantasy / Urban Fantasy
My Teaser from  page 36 of the paperback.
Sig did not think this was a good thing. He sat on Petra’s stomach and stared at Gabe as he snored, eyes shining in the dark. He cocked his head and looked at Petra, as if to say, This is all your fault.
In case you haven’t figured it out, Sig is Petra’s coyote and he doesn’t like sharing the bed with Gabe. LOL
This is from the ARC copy.
~~~~~

Synopsis

Winter is the most deadly season in Temperance. And it’s not just because of the fierce cold. Evil is stalking the backcountry of Yellowstone, killing wolves and leaving only their skins behind.

As the snow deepens, Geologist Petra Dee is staring her own death in the face, while former Hanged Man Gabriel struggles with his abrupt transition back to mortality. The ravens and the rest of the Hanged Men are gone, and there are no magical solutions to Petra’s illness or Gabriel’s longing for what he’s lost…and what he stands to lose now.

Meanwhile, there’s a new sheriff in town. Sheriff Owen Rutherford has inherited the Rutherford ranch and the remnants of the Alchemical Tree of Life. He’s also a dangerously haunted man, and his investigation of Sal’s death is leading him right to Gabriel.

It’s up to Petra, her coyote sidekick Sig, and Gabriel to get ahead of both Owen and the unnatural being stalking them all – before the trail turns deathly cold.

My Teaser from 8% in the eBook.

With shocked dismay, Xavier realized that the thought that Annabelle Englewood – a woman he’d met less than twenty-four hours ago, bleeding to death in her home, spoken maybe a hundred words to, and had believed to be a killer – might not forgive him made his stomach clench in a way it hadn’t in a really long tome.

~~~~~
Synopsis
Annabelle Englewood slaughters her family while they sleep.
Or so it seems to Detective Xavier Montague when he and his partner arrive at her house to find her sleeping peacefully, her family all dead.
But then another family and another are murdered, again with one family member left alive, and it becomes clear that Annabelle is simply a pawn in a vicious killer’s game.
Intrigued by Annabelle, the first woman Xavier has been attracted to since his divorce, when he comes face to face with the killer he will be forced to make the ultimate choice, a life and death decision, that could let a psychotic murderer walk free.
My Teaser for this week is from
The Scorpio Races
by Maggie Stiefvater
The Scorpio Races by [Stiefvater, Maggie]
Genre: YA Fantasy
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Teaser
Looking in the side of the lean-to is a long black face.
It still stinks like the ocean. Like low tide and things caught on rocks. It’s barely a horse. It’s hungry.
A capall uisce.
This was such a chilling encounter with of one of the dangerous Water Horses. I am loving this book and will be sharing my review later this week.
~~~~~

Synopsis

Some race to win. Others race to survive.

It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line.

Some riders live.
Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a choice. So she enters the competition – the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

As she did in her bestselling Shiver trilogy, author Maggie Stiefvater takes us to the breaking point, where both love and life meet their greatest obstacles, and only the strong of heart can survive. The Scorpio Races is an unforgettable reading experience.

My Teaser for this week is from

Something Deadly

by Rachel Lee

Genre: Supernatural, suspense, horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Teaser

The hair on Markie’s neck stood on end as Kato howled. For a horrifying moment, an icy breeze seemed to blow over her. They were not alone.

And a scene from Kato’s point of view

The world was full of a plethora of smells: flowers, grass, trees, people, insects, animals…oh, the joy of filling his nostrils with the teeming life of the world.

~~~~~
My Review
I’ll admit, the cover made me pick up this book. The shades of blue, the tropical palms and sea, and the wolf peering out at me. I had to check it out further.
Then the blurb sealed the deal and I brought it home.
An island paradise, greed, ambition, and an ancient curse. It all leads you on a terrifying journey into the supernatural.
Veterinarian Markie Cross moved to the island to save animals. Her closest companion is her wolf hybrid, Kato. They have this magical connection, can almost tell what each other is thinking. This connection plays an important role when islanders start dying in ways that can’t be explained.
Dr. Quinn calls in the CDC when he suspects a contagion may be loose on the island. He brushes elbows with Markie when he’s called to the scene of a mysterious death. Soon, they are forced to accept that something not human is behind the deaths. Along with Kato, they must face the evil or no one will survive it’s wrath.
I loved this book. So much was happening and the author sucked me right in.
Markie is such a wonderful character. She’s smart, successful, and adores Kato.
Kato is my hero. A wolf hybrid with mystical intelligence. His compassion for the animals brought into Markie’s veterinarian clinic is so heart warming. The author’s choice to have Kato share his thoughts, to see what he sees, is such a great idea.
I really liked Declan too. He’s the islands doctor and medical examiner. It doesn’t take him long to connect with Kato. That made me happy, as the way to Markie’s heart is through her wolf.
Lots of mystery, along with some character’s you don’t mind dying, a couple you do, and a supernatural element, make this one you’ll want to read straight through.
I’ve read this book several times and it still gives me thrills and chills
Synopsis
An island of beauty becomes A GATEWAY TO TERROR…
Few could argue that the exclusive island of San Martin is anything less than paradise. In this wealthy enclave, veterinarian Markie Cross has a thriving practice, but her almost psychic connection to animals has made human relationships — especially with men — harder to navigate. Until mystery, murder and something unfathomable shatter her world…
People are dying strange, unexplained deaths. Island medical examiner Declan Quinn is stunned at the unearthly condition of the bodies, and he and Markie share a dark suspicion that something terrifying and impossible is at work here. Something that may not be human.
As a sinister message becomes clearer, Markie and Dec race to understand the tragic history of this island paradise and unlock the true nature of the evil now descending. Because if they can’t, Markie may become the next victim….
My Review
I couldn’t stop reading this once I started. But, I did. I went and got my 21 year old son and we sat down to read it together. He experienced plenty of bullying in school and expressed how lucky he would have been to have this book when he was younger.
We took turns reading it out loud and got into a couple of giggling fits whenever one of us said the word Poop. A fun character is Poop. Look at that cover. Isn’t he kind of cute? How creative of the author to use something people whisper about to engage young readers on a touchy subject.
Synopsis
Poor Liam. On the very first day of fifth grade, in a strange new town, and a large new school, he interrupts everyone to bolt out and into the girl’s bathroom. There, down in the far stall, in pain from a horrible stomach condition, he meets a new friend: Poop. The cheery little guy says he’s there to help Liam through a tough time in his life. But what does Liam need help with? And who, in their right mind, would want Poop for a friend?
My teaser from page 103 in the paperback.
We knocked on the adjoining door between our rooms. There was no response.
“Sounds like they could be dead in there,” Elsie said, pressing her ear to the door.
“That heavy breathing sounds like they’re alive,” I whispered.
“Which one?” Elsie asked. “I don’t want to know what’s going on in there.”
I grinned and nudged her with my elbow. “It hasn’t been that long. I think you know what’s probably going on.”
Sorry this is more than two sentences but this is such a wickedly cute scene. I could just see them, leaning in to listen, and then giggling when they realize what’s going on in there. What do you think is happening?
My teaser from 8% in the eBook.
 After she unpacked, she stretched out on the bed and drowsily watched the boats trolling the lake. She watched the seagulls flying over the shoreline. Eventually their swooping and soft crying lulled her to sleep and she rested better than she had in weeks. A deep comforting sleep that helped to wipe away the past and nudge her into the future.
Sorry this was a bit long. It was such a lovely, peaceful scene. I swear I could hear the waves brushing the shore, the gulls calling to each other, and catch the slightly fishy scent of the water.
My Review
What a fun story.
It all takes place over a twenty-four period, with each chapter representing one hour.
The author invites you into her story with as much finesse and adept handling as the doormen who usher in guests to the posh Shipley Hotel.
I have to also hand it to the author for breathing life into her characters, of which there are many. From the employees to the most entitled of guests, you’ll be introduced to a menagerie of strangers rubbing elbows and staff adroitly handling the most difficult guests and embarrassing situations as the clock ticks down to a new day. If you ever wished you were a fly on the wall, here’s your chance.
I started this early in the morning and was finished in a couple of hours. From the opening scene to the final curtain call, it was fun and intriguing. This would be a great play. Or even a television show. I’d tune in for new episodes.
I would be remiss to not share how I felt about the ending. I realized I was down to the last two pages and there was no way the author could possibly give me a satisfying ending. I waffled over whether I even wanted to read the end then. But, I soldiered on and, low and behold, the author pulled it off. I wonder, did the author have the beginning and ending of the story first, and then filled in the middle? I knew for sure the ending was right when I realized I was smiling.
Synopsis
Welcome to The Shipley Hotel, where the perky and attentive staff provides the gold standard in artificial concern and comfort to all the colorful characters who pass through its polished brass revolving door and find themselves in The Lobby. Practically engineered for eavesdropping, San Francisco’s juiciest hotel lobby offers the perfect place to witness the comings and goings-and the most comedic intersections-of staff, long-term residents, and eclectic guests. Featuring over fifty stories all transpiring in a single twenty-four hour period and intersecting in the Shipley’s elegant lobby, readers will meet an eccentric and vast array of characters, most of whom will look awfully familiar and all of whom will speak to the heart. Employing acute skills in human observation and a keen understanding of the essential human needs-frequently unplanned and unexpected rendezvous, ready laughter at others’ expense, and maybe even a little love and acceptance-Randi M. Sherman’s unique wit and candor will surely make the reader sit up, stand up, roll over, or assume an interested leaning position and take notice. Get comfortable (on the exquisitely upholstered lobby couch) and spy on those checking in and out of the Shipley. Careful: you might just encounter a version of yourself among the ornate balconies and intricate woodwork.
