Synopsis:

Legend of the Chupacabra finds Jessie and Suzanne living peacefully in Portland, Oregon six years after they believed to have put an end to the curse of the chupacabra. But the women come to learn of their failure, and the futility of their sacrifices, when a remarkable reunion brings horror back into their lives; only this time, what they face will be unlike any creature they’ve encountered. Legend of the Chupacabra marks the end of a trilogy, but the continuation of a saga that will leave this moment of history drenched in blood.

Earlier this year, Hebler’s first volume in his Chupacabra Series, Night of the Chupacabra, earned him top honors in the category of “Horror” from the National Indie Excellence Awards. The NIEA was founded by Ellen Reid, the current President and CEO. Reid comments, “The awards celebrate the best of books in print, and represent a diverse group of first-time authors and seasoned authors.” Hebler was extremely honored to have received such extraordinary recognition for a story that had lived within his mind and heart for 20 years before its 2012 release.

In reference to Legend of the Chupacabra, Hebler hopes his fans and readers will enjoy their reunion with Jessie and Suzanne. There is no shortage of action, mystery, humor, drama, romance, or, of course, horror. And as usual, there are surprises around every turn. “I’m especially excited about including a little piece of Oregon’s scandalous history with the Portland underground,” states Hebler. “I think that particular element rivals the callousness of the chupacabra itself and examines the similarities between monster and man.”

In addition to the release of Legend of the Chupacabra in trade paperback and eBook on July 29, 2014, Hebler will also release an audiobook of his reading, which will accompany the release of the audiobooks of the first two series novels, Night of the Chupacabra and Curse of the Chupacabra.

EXCERPT:

Blood poured out of the chief’s wound, cueing the squaws to form a ceremonious line at Eagle Claw’s feet. With their jars ready, each dancing warrior paired with a woman. It was Raven Child and Mighty Wind who were the first to concoct the sacrificial mixture. Raven Child caught Eagle Claw’s blood with her jar, while Mighty Wind poured the mountain goat’s blood out of the beast’s skull into the same, creating a broth that Eagle Claw lifted into the air, once ready. He presented the bequest to the spirits, calling the goat spirit forth with the offering of its own powers of agility and energy joined with his powers as chief, and then spouted, “Goat, I give sacrifice for your wisdom.”

Eagle Claw took a sip from the jar and swallowed. He, then, poured the rest of the contents into the fire.

Storm Cloud stood at the edge of the platform. He gazed down at the flames still flipping about as the burning mixture sizzled and sparked.

With bated breath, everybody watched to see if the goat spirit had been properly deceived. Eagle Claw did exactly as instructed by Atraco. The Pniese’s instructions were to simply ask the spirits for their wisdom and protection; making sure to keep all truth from them. Deceit from a heart filled with rage and hatred was the only way to conjure revenge; the requests for help needing to be as treacherous as the act of revenge itself. The one responsible for Loud Fire’s death would suffer mercilessly before dying.

The strength of the fire changed; the flames whipped about like a blistering weapon, and the escaping smoke blackened. It was happening; the goat spirit had been fooled into accepting the offering.

Storm Cloud continued to gaze over the edge as the thick smoke began to take the shape of a mountain goat. It rose into the air–as common smoke would–but gave the illusion of the goat charging towards him. Once he and the entity met, Storm Cloud took a deep breath and inhaled the smoldering spirit. The moment the possessed fumes filled his lungs, it took every ounce of self-restraint to suppress his urge to cough, but Atraco had warned him ahead of time of this egregious mistake as it would release the spirit back into the universe, never to return. He only needed to wait a short time before the smoke spirit would find its path and seep into his body like a cancer; and the old Pniese had been right. He could feel his need subside as the spirit began to take control.

The moment the smoke spirit had been born, the black stallion became restless. He and Tree Cradle had lived most of their years together, and she thought of Black Wild as family, as he did the same of her. So it was with considerable ease that she was able to calm her four-legged brother by stroking his elongated nose and looking him in the eye to let him know all would be fine.

Tree Cradle twisted her head back to the ritual, saw that the smoke spirit was gone, and Storm Cloud’s body was beginning to relax. She wondered if Black Wild would continue to listen to her when the next eight spirits were called.

Water Stone and Talking Bear were next. As before, Eagle Claw’s blood seeped into the jar while Talking Bear poured the blood from his bear’s head.

Eagle Claw lifted the jar containing the powers of defense and transformation, calling to the bear spirit, “Bear, I give sacrifice for your wisdom.”

He swallowed a single mouthful of the blood mixture then threw the remainder into the fire. Again, the blood spoke as it burned and the waves of the flames grew more intense.

Storm Cloud readied himself, now with the understanding of what was to come next should the bear spirit accept the offering.

It did.

The flames released another cloud of smoke that transformed into an earthly bear. Once more, the spirit rose towards the sky, charging at Storm Cloud as though he were its prey, only to be sucked into the young man’s body with one long breath.

Tree Cradle had guessed correctly; Black Wild did not like the bear spirit’s summoning, and he had not been as easy to tame the second time, but they both would have to endure since they were bound and could not leave. Each had a purpose for being there, as the wandering shaman had previously inculcated.

Author Michael Hebler

chup Author, Michael Hebler

Prior to becoming an award-winning author of his dark fiction Chupacabra Series, Michael was a full-time international film publicist who had worked on multiple titles for Walt Disney, Pixar, Lionsgate, Lakeshore Entertainment, Warner Bros., Summit Entertainment, and the 2013 Academy Award-winning Best Forgein Language Film, “La grande bellezza” (The Great Beauty).

Born in the early 1970′s in Los Angeles County to a salesman and a homemaker, Michael dreamed of following his passions for entertainment and storytelling by becoming an actor. It was while studying theatre arts at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California, did he realize his penchant for stories were better suited on the page rather than the stage. However, creating tales with suspense, laughter, and heart is not Michael’s only love. Hebler also enjoys volunteering in his local community for Meals on Wheels, as well as aid in the capture/spay/neuter/release feral program.

To date, Michael’s publications include Chupacabra Series Novels, “Night of the Chupacabra,” “Curse of the Chupacabra,” and now “Legend of the Chupacabra,” the first three of his six-part series, as well as his first publication, “The Night After Christmas,” a holiday picture book for believers of any age. Michael also authored the micro story, “Hunt for the Chupacabra,” (currently unavailable) preceding the events of Book I, and will release his first novella, “The Ghost of Christmas Past” on October 7, 2014. [Ghost] is a spiritual story placing the popular Dickens character in the center of its own afterlife, and life, while aiding a woman’s complicated past.

Hi Michael. It’s great to have you back on my blog to talk about your Chupacabra series.

Shall we begin?

Let’s do it!

1) As far back as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by creatures. Why did you choose the Chupacabra for your monster?

Although creatures fascinate me as well, the Chupacabra Series was not only meant to be a single story, but there were no creatures. When I first began writing what is known today as “Night of the Chupacabra,” it was the furthest thing from the end result. First of all, it wasn’t prose but a screenplay called, “Dark Sunrise” about a serial killer in an Old West town. Think “Unforgiven” meets “Silence of the Lambs.” The comparison is more than adequate since it was the early 1990’s when I thought of the idea. About four or five years later, the serial killer was exchanged for a creature. I don’t exactly remember why, I think the element of mythology intrigued me more. But even then it wasn’t a chupacabra. The chupacabra came after watching an episode of “The X-Files.” The similarities between my creature and the chupacabra were shocking, so I made another switch.

2) Did you follow the rules for the myth of the chupacabra, or did you make up some of your own?

Mostly… yes. Because in all actuality, there really are no rules for this thing. I did do some research after watching that “X-Files” episode and could find very little. All I knew was that it drank the blood of children and animals mostly. It never explained why that was. I just presumed it was either because they were easier prey, or the stories of the chupacabra were meant to be scary bedtime stories. Also, nobody could explain exactly what it was or what it looked like. Some said it had wings, others didn’t. Some said it was the nuclear mutation of a wolf or a dog, others thought aliens left their pet Fido behind. There was even one theory that said it came from Rome, Italy when explorers discovered South America. So I decided enough was enough, and I would write something of an origin story. Besides, my heart was set on doing a western-horror. However, for all you die hard chuppie fans, definitely be on the watch for Book V, “Return of the Chupacabra,” I think you’ll be pleased with the progression of the mythology as the series leaps into the 1990’s.

3) Obviously, people will die when the chupacabra gets too close. Did you write in special characters for the killings or did the chupacabra have a mind of its own and kill off characters you hadn’t planned on?

Character and plot always come first. It’s their world, not the chupacabra’s. I never write in a character to kill him/her. In any one of these novels, when it comes time to decide whether to kill someone, I ask myself: Is this necessary for the plot (both book plot and series plot)? Sometimes the answer is as simple as that character has served its purpose and is just in the way (as was the case with the actress, Evelyn Diamond in Book II), sometimes his/her death is a catalyst for an event, or sometimes it’s a necessity to guide the protagonist on his/her path. There is one particular death in “Legend of the Chupacabra” that I mulled over and over, ultimately deciding that the character’s dying wish was needed to help the protagonist overcome her foolishness about a decision by the end of the story.

4) Why did you choose to have the story take place in the old west?

Yes, this story and the previous two books take place in the Old West, but as I hinted, the entire saga does not stay there. In fact, after [Legend], I’m pretty much done with that era. Book IV, “Dawn of the Chupacabra” will be a prequel to this trilogy (think “The Hobbit” to “The Lord of the Rings”) and it will begin during the final year of the Civil War. The “Old West” did not occur until after the war was over. That’s when settlers began heading towards California. However, there will be some hints of its start, and you might even come across a familiar face or two when they were younger. And as I mentioned, Book V, [Return] is the 1990’s.

5) What do you hope readers will take away with them after reading Legend of the Chupacabra?

There are two constant themes that run through this entire series: The importance of family, and Man can be just as much of a monster. I hope that is clear.

6) Now that you’ve finished writing Legend, are you on to something new or will you be writing more of that world? And would you care to share with us?

Of course I’ll share! I’m in a very sharing mood.  I am tackling two stories at once, which is something I’ve never done before and will never do again. While I write the first draft of “Dawn of the Chupacabra,” I’m rewriting a novella that is due later in the year on October 7 called, “The Ghost of Christmas Past,” which is about the notorious Dickens’ character that is given a past of its own and is made to journey through its afterlife, as well as it’s mortal life, while aiding a very troubled woman on Christmas Eve. This novella is more of a literary turn for me, and although it’s not horror, it is still dark fiction and filled with the paranormal obviously. I am very excited about it and hope to honor Dickens’ classic, “A Christmas Carol,” which is one of my all-time favorite stories.

Thanks so much for answering my questions Michael. I look forward to having you back for my review of Legend of the Chupacabra.

Thank you, Laura for inviting me back. It’s always a blast. Let’s do it again soon! Maybe sometime around October 7th?

Great tease Michael. Can’t wait!

There is a creature that lurks in the vast open deserts of the west. It can only survive on blood and, although it prefers to prey on the weak and young, it will slaughter anyone or anything, once provoked. It is unnatural, deceptive, and difficult to kill. Word about the existence of this elusive beast has not spread since anyone who has crossed paths with it did not live long enough to tell of their account.

In the Chupacabra Series, a vampire-like, cryptozoological creature (which literally translates to “goat-sucker”) takes a supporting role to a cast of memorable characters who struggle to survive while finding their place in developing America. Currently slated for six books, the Chupacabra Series echoes strong family themes and the sacrifices required for that nature of love; and while some characters do survive long enough to make it through multiple novels, each volume will host a different protagonist to lead the reader through its continuing journey.

Red always knew she would have to face the man who nearly destroyed her. She just didn’t figure it would happen so soon…

In theory, the idea seems the only way to keep humanity alive. In practice, it doesn’t matter whether a person is on the inside or the out—there is no humanity.

…And even though John Gatherum hunted her down and instigated their reunion, Red’s no longer the passive girl he once manipulated. This time, she has a hidden agenda of her own.

Kill him. Save her family. Save herself.

I hear voices. Tiny fictional people sit on my shoulders and whisper their stories in my ear. Instead of medicating myself, I decided to pick up a pen, write down everything those voices tell me, and turn it into a book. I’m not crazy. I’m an author. For the most part, I write contemporary Young Adult novels. However, through a writing exercise that spiraled out of control, I found myself writing about zombies terrorizing the Wild Wild West—and loving it. My zombies don’t sparkle, and they definitely don’t cuddle. At least, I wouldn’t suggest it.
I live on the benches of the beautiful Wasatch Mountains with two lovely children, one teenager, and a very patient husband. I graduated from Utah State University with a B.A. degree in English, not because of my love for the written word, but because it was the only major that didn’t require math. I can’t spell, and grammar is my arch nemesis. But they gave me the degree, and there are no take backs.
As a child, I never sucked on a pacifier; I chewed on a pencil. I’ve been writing that long. It has only been the past few years that I’ve pursued it professionally, forged relationships with other like-minded individuals, and determined to make a career out of it.

Superstition Mountain Trilogy

Stacey Thompson

Description

The story leans on the Apache creation story, taking the idea of a Monster Slayer and bringing it to a western setting. The main character, Ami, is one of the best in the small village she lives in. The Shaman takes a special interest in her and she doesn’t know why at first. She also gives her a stone that ties into the Apache legend. A love develops between the man who trained her, Wesley and herself.

We are also introduced to Maggie, a former Monster Slayer who helps with finding Price and tries to help them kill Price. She has her own issues with the past that are actually addressed shortly in the novella. She’s the main character in the short story which tells us a lot more about why she is the way she is. This story, Bloody Christmas is available to read on my blog.

Price is the first Vampire Demon to be in the world. He was the original Monster the first Monster Slayer thought they killed. Where gold bullets from the sacred mines of Superstition Mountain will kill most Demons, they won’t kill him. The only thing that can is the line of the original Monster Slayer, Ami. Instead of killing Ami, he takes an unusual interest in her.

In the second novella, Ami decides to leave because she doesn’t want to burden Wesley with what she is. Of corse Wesley tracks her down because he loves her and doesn’t realize she isn’t totally human anymore. He tracks her to a town where there has been a killing of a Vampire by what looks like another Vampire. He starts to put things together, but still wants to believe she isn’t something he needs to kill.

While Wesley is tracking Ami, Maggie is on her own mission to help. She meets up with an old friend from her Monster Slayer days to help kill the evil that is Price. Her subplot plays out with reuniting with her old love, Cody, but he has complications as well. Wesley doesn’t like Cody and there is back and forth a few times with these characters.

In the third novella, Wesley has to deal with the fact Ami is a Vampire and learn if he can live with it or if he must do what he’s trained to do.

Cody learns to deal with the part of him that is different and Maggie accepts him for it. They live a life that brings happiness to themselves as well as rebuilding the Order that was destroyed by Price.

In the last chapter, we learn what evil can really do to people and who can carry that burden. It’s an ending that leaves you wondering. 😉

 Superstition MountainBlood and Dust Excerpt.

Set Up: Wesley, Maggie, Cody and John are working on getting rid of a group of Vampires that are killing a whole town. What they find is not what they expect.

Wesley

“I know you aren’t fond of Cody. Whatever happened in that house needs to stay there for now,” she said, holding her gaze to him.

“There’s something not right about the guy.” Wesley glanced back to Cody who was watching the pair as though he was able to know what was being said.

“I know, but that’s his issue right now.” She stopped and sighed. “Look, I’ve known him for a long time. He’s a good guy.”

“Good guy or not, he’s still got something going on.” He pulled the horse and went back to the group. Maggie sighed and followed him.

Wesley kept his mouth shut the rest of the time. He watched Cody but kept his distance. He didn’t know what was going on with this guy, but he also didn’t want to go after Price alone. This small group was all that stood between darkness. They kept going until the sun started to go down.

“There’s a town up ahead,” Cody said, coming up beside Maggie. Wesley could hear them talking, but didn’t turn to look at them. “I don’t like it.”

“Why?” Maggie was clearly starting to get frustrated.

“I’m not sure.”

“We have to stop. We’re running low on supplies, and it would be nice to sleep in a bed for a change.” Maggie glanced at everyone and then the town. She didn’t give anyone time to argue and headed towards it. Wesley sighed and followed with the other guys behind them.

They didn’t have to ride too long before they were at the edge of the town. It was quite, but the sun was setting and the town had little beyond candles burning in the windows. There were a few lanterns on in the boarding house and some of the smaller merchants. Wesley glanced around, looking for some sign of life, but there wasn’t anything that told him anyone lived in this place.

“Where is everyone?” Cody said what everyone was thinking.

“They’re probably just staying in. With all the attacks in the area, it would be the smart thing to do,” Maggie said, trying to stay positive.

“You know what a silent town means, Maggie.” Cody was direct, and it made Wesley glance between the two.

“Trouble.” Wesley didn’t know what else to say. It was the sign every Slayer looked for. Usually the people in the town were hiding or worse.

They stopped at one of the merchants, and Wesley jumped off his horse to go in with Maggie right behind him. They opened the door and stepped inside. One older man was standing behind the counter furiously cleaning it. He glanced up when the doorbell rang from the door opening.

Wesley smiled and walked towards the counter. The old man stopped and kept his eyes on the pair.

“I don’t want any trouble,” the old man sputtered out. Wesley watched him, confused by his fear.

“We aren’t here to hurt you. What’s going on around here? Where is everyone?” He didn’t take his eyes off of the old man in case he decided to do something. The man took a breath and then stepped back from the counter.

“Those people… they’re taking people and killing them.” He managed to get it out, but his eyes kept darting between Wesley and Maggie. “They’re some kind of Demon with glowing eyes.” He held his fingers up to his eyes.

“Where are these Demons?” Maggie said not taking a step towards them. She was clearly keeping her distance in order to keep him from reacting in a way that wasn’t good for any of them.

“In the Docs house, just on the edge of town.” The old man put his face in his hands. “What can we do? They’re going to kill us all.”

“You should find a place in the back or somewhere you can hide. Don’t come out until the sun comes up.” Maggie glanced at Wesley, and he started for the door.

“Let’s go to work,” he said, pushing the door open and glancing at Cody and John. “There are some Vampires at the Docs. We need to clear them out before we do anything else.” No one argued with him, and they were at the doctor’s house in a few minutes. The first thing Wesley noticed was the screaming and pleading from a younger girl. He jumped off the horse and went straight for the door.

“Wait, you don’t know how many are in there,” Maggie yelled behind him. All he could hear was the girl screaming for help. He kicked the door open and rushed in.

The room was covered in fresh blood, and there were a lot of dead bodies littering the floor. Wesley almost slipped on the wet blood on the floor. He grabbed onto the back of the couch and snapped his head up in time to see the kick hit him in the gut. He doubled over and felt the woman push him down on the ground. Before he could react she was on top of him. That’s when he saw something he wished he’d never seen.

Ami was a Vampire and going to kill him.

Excerpt

She watched him with care. “I don’t know if I love you. I like you, a lot, but I don’t have the slightest idea what love feels like.”

Travis’ smile grew slowly across his face. “I understand. I’m not sure if I love you or not, but I also don’t think I could live without you. So you will always have that.” His voice was almost a whisper when he said the last.

“Truly?” Her voice cracked and she had to force herself to breathe easy.

“Truly.”

She inclined her head and took two brisk steps toward him. She leaned over and kissed him with all the fever of a thousand fires. He reached up and intertwined his hand through her hair to hold her still as he plundered her mouth.

She released him with a shaky breath and jumped back to turn on her heels. “Put something nice on. I’ll be back with a preacher man.”

“You know, I heard you only have to say ‘I marry you’ three times and then you’re hitched.”

She threw him a sassy look and slammed the door shut.

My review

To Tame a Montana Heart fed my hunger for a lighter, more humorous read.

Welcome to Lolo Springs.

Dusty comes from a large family. Lolo Springs is a small town. Impropriety is frowned upon and Dusty, along with a few of her sisters and her younger brother, give the town enough to raise their eyebrows.

Dusty and her younger brother, Dalon, help DeEtte run the Triple D Ranch. Something else frowned upon by the town gossips. Women get married, have babies, and tend the home. They don’t run around in men’s pants, doing men’s work.

That doesn’t stop Dusty. She shoots like Annie Oakley and can bust broncos as well as any man. And she has a passion for fishing. That’s how she gets in a pickle with newcomer, Travis.

Travis doesn’t realize he’s in a race when he joins two riders running their horses on the plain. He loses by a nose and the pert, sassy, woman on her black stallion claims his horse. He laughs it off, but later his horse disappears.

He later encounters her again, fishing in his stream. He spots his horse and sneaks around to get him. Then he decides to have some fun with her and fines her for trespassing. He takes her catch of fresh fish and leaves, chuckling.

Thus begins the game of who can keep the horse and the beginning of a romance.

I loved Travis and Dusty. He’s the jilted man and she’s the independent tomboy. What a match.

Dusty’s siblings go from refined, to rebellious and independent in character, with one older sister even becoming a bounty hunter. Scandalous!

With trying to complete the building of the hotel, run the Triple D Ranch, bust the broncos for delivery, deal with the rustlers that stole their herd, and the threat of an Indian uprising, their’s never a dull moment for these guys.

It was really fun to see Justine, the prim, older sister, let her hair down and even put on some pants. The author has set this up perfectly to feature different siblings in their own stories. It’s great this is a series.  I’ll read every one and have a rip-tearing time.

To tame a Montana Heart is relaxing and funny and reads like a swift flowing stream. Sit back and enjoy.

Four shiny spurs.
