Teaser from page 64 in the hardcover.

Often when we went to pick up Trixie, she was not in the holding area at the back of the facility, but roamed free with the women who worked up front at the receiving station.

On our first visit, we were amused when the receptionist said, “Dr. Whittaker, Trixie Koontz is here for her appointment.” Trixie was now Trixie Koontz, officially a part of the family.

This same thing happened to me with my Chow Chow, Mollie. She charmed the staff at the veterinarian clinic on her first day and was allowed to roam freely throughout the clinic. They would announce her when I took her in for her regular grooming days. “Mollie is here for her beauty day.” LOL

I happened to notice at the end of one of his books that Dean Koontz mentioned the enduring spirit of their Golden Retriever, Trixie. I had just lost my golden/grey hound mix, Lassie, and reached out to him. I never expected a response and was moved to tears by the letter he wrote back. He also sent me this wonderful signed book which I’ve read many times and am reading again now.

Synopsis

In a profound, funny, and beautifully rendered portrait of a beloved companion, bestselling novelist Dean Koontz remembers the golden retriever who changed his life. A retired service dog, Trixie was three when Dean and his wife, Gerda, welcomed her into their home. She was superbly trained, but her greatest gifts couldn’t be taught: her keen intelligence, her innate joy, and an uncanny knack for living in the moment. Whether chasing a tennis ball or protecting those she loved, Trixie gave all she had to everything she did, inspiring Dean and Gerda to trust their instincts and recapture a sense of wonder that will remain with them always. Trixie lived fewer than twelve years; in this wide world, she was a little thing. But in every way that mattered, she lived a big life.

  3. Kathy Martin says:

This sounds wonderful. I know how much I missed my dog when she died and wish I had the literary talent to write about her. This week I am featuring A Merciful Silence by Kendra Elliot. Happy reading!

    • fuonlyknew says:

It’s funny you mention that. I had also just lost my dog and felt a need to share about her. I wrote quite a bit and his response wasn’t just a little note either.

  4. Yvonne says:

This sounds like a beautiful book. What a lovely response from the author too!

  5. Sounds like a sweet story! Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

That is amazing that you such a wonderful response when you reached out to Koontz. My dogs are such a huge part of my life. They have a big impact on every single decision that I make. I have a Chow mix and the hair…oh the hair. My Chow needs a beauty appointment to say the least.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I was thrilled by his response. And my dogs have always been a major impact on my decisions, especially when traveling. I had a Chow Chow and always kept her groomed. She looked like a blond lion!

  7. Kym Thorpe says:

My husband is a big Koontz fan. I didn’t realize he’d written this memoir. How wonderful that Koontz responded to your letter. 🙂 Thanks for visiting my blog!

What a lovely story! This looks an entertaining, uplifting book – I think we could all take a lesson from the pets in our lives to live more in the moment… Thank you for sharing, Laura:)

    • fuonlyknew says:

I know they say having a pet lengthens your life. For me, they bring joy. Just reaching over and stroking my dog or looking at him lying on his back, zonked out and dreaming brings such joy!

  9. Yvo says:

Great teaser! I like the sound of this one.

  10. Lelia T says:
