The Monster’s Daughter
by Michelle Pretorius
Genre: Historical / Mystery
Synopsis
Somewhere on the South African veldt, 1901: At the height of the Boer War, a doctor at a British concentration camp conducts a series of grim experiments on Boer prisoners. His work ends in chaos, but two children survive: a boy named Benjamin, and a girl named Tessa.
One hundred years later, a disgraced young police constable is reassigned to the sleepy South African town of Unie, where she makes a terrifying discovery: the body of a young woman, burned beyond recognition.
The crime soon leads her into her country’s violent past a past that includes her father, a high-ranking police official under the apartheid regime, and the children left behind in that long ago concentration camp.
Michelle Pretorius’s epic debut weaves present and past together into a hugely suspenseful, masterfully plotted thriller that calls to mind Lauren Beukes’s The Shining Girls and Tana French’s The Secret Place. With an explosive conclusion, it marks the emergence of a thrilling new writer.

I added this book back in August of 2016. This sounds like a thrilling historical mystery. I’ll be honest. I couldn’t resist the title. LOL

The above cover is the one I own. Here is an alternative cover.
Which is your favorite?

Thanks so much for visiting fuonlyknew!
You can find a list of my reviews HERE.
I can’t say that either cover greatly appeals to me-both backgrounds are a bit vague! I’d want a nice bit of South African scenery front and centre! The story itself sounds a bit different though.
Yeah, an acacia tree or a sunset with silhouette’s would be good too.
This does sound good. I really enjoy seeing what people have on this feature each week. It’s funny because with Carole, it’s usually a book I have as well so I play of game and see if I have it too each week. She got me again this week!
LOL I imagine mine are more obscure, and of course, scary!
We do seem to have very similar tastes in the books we buy, Barb 🙂
I like the first cover best. This has some big comparisons, especially The Shining Girls, I’d be curious to see if it can live up to them.😁
I;m curious too, Tammy:)
I think I like the first cover best. I hope you can stop by:

It’s the eyes, isn’t it, Sherry!
I like the second cover best…it’s more haunting.
It is darker.
Well Laura I could resist the title …but not the blurb! 😉
I hear ya!
Hmmm, not sure I ever added a book just because of the title, but I know I have because of the cover. I hope you eventually read this and enjoy it. It sounds pretty deep and intense.
Sometimes a title makes me take that closer look. And I know I’be grabbed some because of the covers. LOL
I really like the sound of this one, Laura. I don’t know how I haven’t heard of it before. I can’t wait to see what you think of it when you do get the chance to read it.
I remember adding it and I’m surprised I didn’t get to it sooner.
This does sound good! I am especially drawn to the setting. I hope you enjoy it when you read it. I’ll be curious to know what you think!
I love doing this feature. It helps me make sure to read these books that have gotten buried in the stacks.
Sounds pretty good! I think I like the first cover best.
I keep going back and forth on the covers.
