blurb

Mara Taylor is dying. A mysterious blood disorder is taking her life and her doctors can’t seem to stop it. Only her daily swims offer her any relief. Resigned to her fate, she heads to Orcas Island for one last swim.

Cade Bowman leads a small werewolf pack in Bellingham, Washington. Or he did, before a fire elemental intent on revenge traps him as his wolf. His pack gone, held prisoner by the elemental’s charms, he knows death is coming for him.

When Cade’s wolf finds Mara, he knows instinctively that she’s the key to freeing him from the fire elemental’s charm. She’s more than that. She’s his.

Can Mara free Cade his wolf and save her own life in the process? And if she does, can they survive when they learn the identity of the fire elemental hunting them both?

excerpt

The figure emerged from the water. Clad in black, her lean legs ended in curved hips. Gentle swells under the rubber, a blue swim cap, goggles. Long red hair spilled out of her swim cap as she tugged it off. Water trailed down her cheeks. She reached under the bumper and withdrew something small and black. A high-pitched beep came from the car. The hatchback opened and the woman sat down on the edge of the trunk and stripped off her wetsuit. A green bikini covered a body that was too thin—almost as emaciated as his was—with a bluish tinge to her skin that he neither understood nor liked. She moved carefully, as if a sudden step or jerk would shatter her. Beautiful. The word came to the wolf, though he wasn’t even sure what it meant. He only knew that he wanted to get close to her.

The wolf sniffed from his hiding place. A storm of emotions washed over him, thunder in his ears, lightning against his skin, giving him a spark of energy to stumble closer under the bushes. Spring rain, coconut, almonds. Scents he recognized. Weakness. A bitter, bloody tang. It wasn’t him. It was coming from her. Dark smudges shadowed her eyes. Her lips were pale. Sick. She tugged on a pair of fleece pants and a sweatshirt over her skimpy bikini. Wool socks, shoes, and a towel around her wet hair were all added before she rose and hurried over to the building. She disappeared inside. She’d left the trunk open.

Instinct drove him forward, a pull he couldn’t ignore. Mine. It took him two tries to launch himself into her trunk. Blanket. Home. Safe. Good. Thoughts he didn’t understand raced through his battered mind.

Nothing made sense other than the deep feeling of safety that spread over him like the blanket he’d burrowed under. Pain stabbed at every part of him, but he didn’t care. Sleep.

about the author

clip_image005Patricia D. Eddy has been a writer all of her life. She used to sit at her parents’ kitchen counter at an Apple IIe typing out short stories. She even wrote a few on their old typewriter. But it wasn’t until NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in 2011 that she ever came close to finishing a story she started.

Once that dam broke, the flood waters never receded. Patricia sits down to write every evening after dinner and quite often sees midnight come and go before she heads to bed. She doesn’t sleep much. But she wouldn’t have it any other way.

In her spare (HA!) time she runs, bikes, swims, yogas, pilates-es, reads, and is terribly addicted to Doctor Who and Sherlock. Apparently she has a thing for quirky British men.

The Elder Race was a story told around campfires. Aliens, monsters, mad men. Those who believed were

called insane, but they were right. They came from space, the seas, and below the earth. Turns out they

were waiting, patiently waiting all this time. For what, no one knew, until now. They’re coming for what

they think is rightfully theirs, the half-breeds that are part human, part Elder.

Once The Rising began, those who were different were gathered. Separated from the life they knew,

those they loved, and moved into camps where they were tested and given the choice. But for Elizabeth,

there was no choice at all. They meant to make super soldiers out of them. What they discovered

instead was something that no one ever expected.

Sometimes monsters aren’t the things you can’t see, but rather, they’re the weapons of your own

creation. When you’re part Elder, and part human, it’s hard to see which side of you is the true hero,

and which side is the monster. Everything Elizabeth thought she knew about herself and the world

around her is changing, but will she be able to get through The Rising alive? Or will she become what the

Government wants her to be: The ultimate weapon.

The Friday 56 hosted by Freda’s Voice.

The only rules are to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader and find any sentence or a

few (no spoilers) that grabs you and post it.

~~~
I couldn’t find a good quote on page 56 so I went to page 156 and found this.
I stared at myself in the mirror.
My nose was back to normal; the only remnant of my two black eyes was a slight yellow shading across one brow bone. I could use Ian’s balm, but I didn’t want to. For all I knew, the stuff was an aphrodisiac or some kind of lust potion, which would explain my hopping into bed with him so easily.
“It couldn’t just be that you were horny and he’s hot”? I asked the woman in the mirror.
She gave me the finger.
The sun exploded on On April 18, 2112 in a Class X solar storm the likes of which humankind had never seen.
They had exactly nineteen minutes to decide what to do next.
They had nineteen minutes until a geomagnetic wave washed over the Earth, frying every electrical device created by humans, blacking out entire continents, and every satellite in their sky.
Nineteen minutes to say goodbye to the world they knew, forever, and to prepare for a new Earth, a new Sun.
Generations after solar storms destroyed nearly all human technology on Earth, humans reverted to a middle ages-like existence, books are burned as heresy, and all knowledge of the remaining technology is kept hidden by a privileged few called the Reticents.
Alana, a disfigured slave girl, and Recks, a traveling minstrel and sometimes-thief, join forces to bring knowledge and books back to the human race. But when Alana is chosen against her will to be the Vessel, the living repository for all human knowledge, she must find the strength to be what the world needs even if it’s the last thing she wants.
Chapter-by-Chapter-header---About-the-Author
Lisa T. Cresswell
Lisa, like most writers, began scribbling silly notes, stories, and poems at a very young age. Born in North Carolina, the South proved fertile ground to her imagination with its beautiful white sand beaches and red earth. In fifth grade, she wrote, directed and starred in a play “The Queen of the Nile” at school, despite the fact that she is decidedly un-Egyptian looking. Perhaps that’s why she went on to become a real life archaeologist?
Unexpectedly transplanted to Idaho as a teenager, Lisa learned to love the desert and the wide open skies out West. This is where her interest in cultures, both ancient and living, really took root, and she became a Great Basin archaeologist. However, the itch to write never did leave for long. Her first books became the middle grade fantasy trilogy, The Storyteller Series. Her first traditionally published work, Hush Puppy, is now available from Featherweight Press.
Lisa still lives in Idaho with her family and a menagerie of furry critters that includes way too many llamas!
Exclusive Excerpt:
We stand under the canopy next to the seaplane and wait for the W Maldives staff to take us to our villas. I look over at Erik and Orie and step close to them, needing their protection. Clayton stands a few feet away, stares at me for a second more then turns toward his friends, who’ve been watching the entire scenario closely. The women, I note, don’t look too happy with me or with him.
Three women from the resort walk over with wet towels and drinks. I take both gladly. I wipe my face with the towel and then take a long sip of the drink. I notice that Erik and Orie are suspiciously quiet. I raise a brow.
“What?”
“You know what,” Erik whispers.
“I think you might get laid on this trip,” Orie says a bit too loudly.
I almost spit out my drink.
“Orie!” My face turns red as I quickly look around to see if anyone heard him. And by anyone, I mean him.
“What? It’s about time, girl,” he says innocently. “You’re the last of your kind. Who else do you know who’s a virgin at twenty- three? It’s a sacrilege.”
“He’s right, you know,” Erik chimes in with a smile. “It’s kind of like the worst thing I’ve ever heard.”
I can’t even manage a response.
.
photo 4
.
“There’s gotta be cobwebs in there by now,” he continues as he sips his drink. “It can’t be too pretty.”
Orie holds out his drink and clinks with Erik. “Here’s to our girl finally arriving at the party.”
I choke on my drink this time and Erik hits me on the back. Are they serious? I look over to where Clayton is standing with his friends and notice that his arms are crossed and his head is tilted slightly to the side. Almost like he’s listening. There’s a small smile on his face, maybe from something his friends said or from the TMI that my friends have blurted out to the world. Who knows? But in any case, I feel like Renee Zellweger in the movie Bridget Jones’s Diary, when she walks into the party wearing a bunny costume when it wasn’t a dress-up party and everyone else was wearing normal clothes. Except in my case, girl in bunny outfit means VIRGIN. Oh my God, I think I really am going to die.
“Would you guys please lower your voices?” I manage to mutter.
Erik raises his brows and shrugs his shoulders.
“You can’t fault a guy for being honest.”
Before I can give them both a proper lecture on the merits of abstinance, a nice-looking gentleman dressed in white linen pants and shirt walks over to us.
“Miss Sophie Walker?” he asks with a smile.
“Yes.”
“I’m Iain Summers, the general manager. It is a pleasure to have you here with us at the W Spa & Resort.”
“Thank you so much. These are my friends, Erik Johnson and Orie Pratt.”
“Lovely to meet you all.” Iain motions toward a young Indian man.
.
photo 2
.
“This is Bikram. He will be your butler for the duration of your stay.”
A butler? This resort really is no joke. Bikram smiles at us cordially. I like him instantly.
“Nice to meet you, Bikram,” we all say.
“Miss Walker, Mr. Johnson and Mr. Pratt, welcome to our island. If you’re ready, I would like to show you to your bungalow now.” Bikram speaks with a thick accent. He has a general sense of calm about him that you don’t see too often. Who wouldn’t, I think to myself as I look around at the general splendor. Working in heaven every day would be anyone’s dream.
We grab our carry-on luggage and follow Bikram to the golf cart that he’s using to take us to our bungalow. We pass Clayton and his friends, who are now talking to Iain. He is laughing, but looks over at me and nods. I blush and look away. He’s too good looking for words. I’m thankful the golf cart is waiting to take me away from drooling over his perfection. Bikram gets in the driver’s seat, Erik and Orie take the middle seats, and I am unfortunately left at the back of the cart facing behind, which happens to be toward Clayton and his friends. I pretend to study my manicure so I won’t stare. Again.
“Isn’t this unbelievable?” Erik says in excitement as the cart drives off.
“It’s heaven,” I agree. I turn around to face them and smile as Orie and Erik lean into each other, holding hands. They are so in love. I’m so happy for them. This is the perfect setting for romance and it makes me long for what they have. A companion. A lover. A mate. I wonder if it will ever happen.
Bikram takes a left off the dock and heads away from the overwater villas, which have a panoramic view of the Indian Ocean. We’ve booked a beach bungalow because it’s a bit cheaper.
.
.
I’m happy with it but I do kind of wish that we were staying in an overwater one. Perched on top of the ocean every day like that would surely be the experience of a lifetime. My gaze settles on a giant villa that sits at the end of the long wooden path that leads along a row of villas that rest on the sea. Bikram motions toward them.
“Those are the Seascape Villas and at the end is the Ocean Haven.”
“It is enormous!” I’m sure he can hear the awe in my voice. What kind of people get to stay there?
“Yes, it is unbelievable, too. The villa is fifty-two hundred square feet, with a living room and two bedrooms. It is really fantastic. Very luxurious. It is the jewel of the Maldives.”
“How much does it go for?” Orie asks curiously. I’m glad he does because I’m dying to know.
“It is about fifteen thousand American dollars a night right now, in high season.”
“Wow,” I say.
“So it’s like the Hope Diamond of villas?” Orie says to Bikram, who laughs at his comparison.
“Yes, I guess you could call it that, Mr. Pratt.” Bikram says.
“Is it booked?” Orie is never afraid to ask anything. Nothing fazes or embarrasses him. Another one of the amazing qualities I love about him.
“Yes, sir, a guest has just booked the villa for fifteen nights. I believe he’s checking in today. He is a returning guest. He stayed with us last year for fifteen days as well.”
“That’s . . . ” Orie whistles softly.
“A lot of fucking money,” Erik finishes. My thoughts exactly.
Bikram smiles. “Yes, Mr. Pratt. It is a lot of money.”
“Must be nice,” Orie says with a smile, but I know he could care less. Money has never been a driving force for him. He’s more of a live-your- passion kind of guy.
We head down a white sandy path, off the beach and deeper into the lush, tropical island. I marvel at all the foliage and vibrant colors of this small paradise. The beach villas blend in well with the jungle vegetation. I’m struck again by the awesome picture, the live canvas of art that is right here every day for guests to see.
Bikram continues down the velvet sandy path and gives us a quick tour of the resort. Almost all the restaurants are centrally located in one pocket of the island next to the main u-shaped beach and are accessible on foot. All the restaurants and the gym are clustered close together. We’re surprised to hear that there’s a small underground dance club on the island that is open three nights a week. We’re told that we can ask for bikes, but honestly everything is so close that I can’t imagine why you’d need them.
The spa is located in a giant villa across from the overwater guest villas. It looks like the ultimate sanctuary. I can’t wait to have a massage.
Everything is so tastefully done and just reeks of relaxation. Bikram tells us that they have yoga and water classes for free every morning in the main guest pool, which is next to the restaurant where they serve breakfast. We all quickly decide to attend the following day.
“I can book any treatment for you at the spa at any time. There are many wonderful options. And we are very pleased to have Noom with us right now.”
“Who is she?” I ask.
“She is a crystal energy healer,” Bikram tells us. “She is very famous here on the island. Lots of Hollywood celebrities come to see her.”
“Really?” Erik asks. “Hollywood celebrities, huh?”
“Yes, sir. She can cure anything, from physical to mental ailments.”
Erik immediately turns to look at me.
“You’ve gotta see her.”
Gee, thanks. Do I look like I need that much help, I think.
“Yes, you do,” Erik says, obviously reading my mind.
“Would you like me to book a session with Noom for tomorrow, Miss Walker?”
“Yes, please,” I say. If I don’t do it, I know Erik will for me. Who knows? Maybe Noom will be able to help me.
“Around ten o’clock, after your breakfast?” Bikram asks me pleasantly.
“That sounds perfect.” Well, great. I haven’t been here for a day and I’m already in therapy. I guess I can’t complain, because I did come here to have an awakening of sorts.
Bikram makes a quick turn and heads down another path, away from the main resort buildings but still along the sea. He soon pulls up to a straw-thatched bungalow.
“We have you booked at the Beach Oasis.”
We jump off the cart and follow Bikram as he opens the door to our bungalow. I gasp in pleasure. It is spectacular. We have a cozy living area that leads into the master room with a king-sized bed that looks welcoming and plush with its crisp, white bedding. There’s a staircase in the living area that goes up to a deck with views across the sea, for daytime or an evening of star gazing. We also have a private sundeck with access to the white sand beach. And our own circular daybed that sits next to a plunge pool I can’t wait to jump into.
We walk back into the living room and Bikram opens another door.
“And this is your connecting oasis, with a twin bed for Miss Walker. You also have your own private bath.”
The room is pretty and I’m really happy but I can’t help but frown at the twin bed. Will I always sleep on a twin bed alone?
How sad.
.
“This is so cute,” Erik says as he comes up behind me and puts his hands on my shoulders.
He’s no dummy. He knows how this looks. He knows what I’m think- ing. You are pathetic, my mind screams at me. What were you thinking? Coming to the Maldives, the most romantic place in the world, all alone?
“You don’t like it?” Bikram asks in concern. He can’t miss the frown on my face.
“Oh no, no, Bikram. It is unreal. This is all so wonderful. Thank you,” I quickly answer, hoping I haven’t offended him in the slightest. It’s not his fault I’m a spinster. Or a loser. Or a twenty- three year old virgin loser.
Bikram doesn’t look convinced, so I smile brightly at him and hope I’m a good actress. “I love this.”
He nods slowly then motions toward our luggage, which we notice is already in the room.
“Please enjoy your stay, and if you need anything, I am at your service. I will confirm your appointment with Noom for tomorrow, Miss Walker.”
“Thank you, Bikram.”
Before he leaves, he pauses at the door. “I almost forgot to tell you that tomorrow night is our end of days party on the beach. I would be more than happy to book you a table.”
“End of days?” I ask curiously.
“Yes, tomorrow is a holy day. According to the old island-dwellers, it is either the end of the world as we know it or a rebirth. It is a very spiritual time. We will celebrate life tomorrow night.”
Huh. If it’s the end, I’m dying a virgin. I know Erik and Orie will be more than happy to point this out.
“Please make a reservation. We will be there to celebrate with you all,” Orie tells him.
Bikram leaves us to our oasis. We are all quiet for a moment.
“Sophie, there’s hope for you yet. Maybe the Holy Ghost will pay you a visit tomorrow night.” Erik says to me with a mischievous grin.
“That’s just rude,” I tell him pointedly. “And blasphemous.”
“Oh shit. Did our girl just throw a five-dollar word at us?” Orie laughs.
I look for something tangible to throw at them both and then the reality of where we are settles in. This is really paradise. We are the luckiest people alive.
Teaser #2 from 7% into the ebook
“Henry Reed. By order of the Mandatory Retirement Act, under the statutes of the Population Density Control Clause, you will now be euthanized by lethal injection, exactly sixty years after the day of your birth. The United federation of Nations thanks you for your contribution to the State and for the sacrifice you are making so that future generations may prosper.”
When I read the description for this book, I was intrigued. When the synopsis is something that could actually occur, I know I’ll be asking questions as I read the story.
This is a chilling depiction of what may lie ahead in the future.
Book Description:
A Death Sentence on Your 60th Birthday is Just the Beginning…
It’s Hank Reed’s birthday. As a citizen of the United Federation of Nations that means a mandatory death sentence simply because he turned sixty years old. Referred to as “retirement,” it’s one of the desperate steps the government has taken to curb overpopulation. Retirement is a widely accepted fact of life on a dying planet ruled by a tyrannical government. Hank’s execution goes ahead as planned but state sponsored euthanasia isn’t what it seems. The Reed family learns what really happens to retirees when secrets the UFN keep from the public start to unravel.
This book is intended to be read by adults and may be unsuitable for children under 17. Contains indecent language and descriptions of graphic violence.
My Review
What first drew me to this book was the cover. Lovely and mysterious. Then I read it was about the ill-fated Donner Party and I got more curious. Then I read there was something evil stalking them. They had more to fear than freezing and starvation.
I wanted to know what it was.
Was it a yeti?
Was it a Windigo?
wendigo photo: Wendigo wendigo.jpg
At only about 50 pages, it didn’t take me long to find out.
Even without a mysterious creature, this would be a chilling story. I’ve read the true reports of the fate of the Donner Party and the author has provided his own horrific account of the conditions and the ordeals the characters suffer through.
After reading about the frigid conditions, the slow starving of the children, the weakening of the men who struggled to provide shelter and food, I was glad I was here on the comfort of my couch. We take so many things for granted, and these people just wanted to survive, to save their families.
To also have to worry about the thing outside, sniffing around, scratching to get in and consume their bodies and souls only compounded the suspense.
I came away from this book wondering how I would have fared. Would I have given up?
Not only the freezing blizzard will chill you to the bone in this tale.
Synopsis
At the urging of Robert Teal, half-Cherokee John Nye, his pregnant wife Anna, and her father Ben Teal sell all their belongings to migrate to California. Along the way, they join with a wagon train heading the same way – the Donner Party.
After taking an unproven “short-cut” that leaves them a month behind, the emigrants are caught in the mountains by the freezing snows of an early winter.
Snowed in, unable to cross the divide, their food running out, and no relief in sight, the exhausted men, women and children of the Donner party settle in to survive.
But something else is out there. Something unseen. Something evil. And it’s stalking them.
John can deal with the elements. But can he save his family from starvation? Can he stop the demon of the frigid wastelands from taking his wife and child?
As food – and time – run out for the Donner party, John and Anna must make a decision. To stay, and starve with the others? Or attempt a harrowing trek out of the mountains – with a creature of myth on their trail?
There are some decisions you shouldn’t have to make.
My Review
The book cover really drew me in and I really wanted to read it after this read the blurb, so I grabbed it. I liked it from the opening passage. Made me think, “It was a dark and stormy night,” because it was. Creepy reading and very suspenseful.
If a stranger showed up at your door after dark, claims he knows you, and asks to come in, would you let him in? Not me, but Will and Betty did.
The old man, Bob Laurent, gave me the creeps. His insidious manipulation of Betty and his behind the back smirks at her husband, Will, set my teeth on edge. As they did Will’s. This guy was a liar and he was up to no good. But he seemed to have Betty under his spell.
At first she didn’t remember him, despite his claims he was friends with her late father, and his references to her calling him Uncle Bob. But then her memories started returning.
The night gets darker, the rain falls harder, and the devil dances.
What I enjoyed most about this book was the pacing. The author gives you a mystery right from the beginning, then he gives you some background on the characters, just enough to get you familiar with them, and then the discomfort creeps in like a cold mist, slowly.
At one point I thought the worst might be over, but the malevolence returned, creeping me out. And then I caught a little clue the author dropped in and had an idea where things might be going. I stayed up late, continuing to the end to see if I was right.
A good horror story that wraps itself around you and gives you a cold, ghostly hug.
 Synopsis
He arrives in darkness, in the middle of a violent downpour…an affable old man with tales to tell…
When Will and Betty Colby return to Betty’s hometown to settle her late father’s affairs and prepare his house for sale, they assume they’ll be faced with some cleaning, basic repairs and making runs to the local dump. Will also hopes it will afford Betty a chance to reflect on the difficult relationship she had with her father. But something more is happening in this quiet little town, in this dark old house at the end of this seemingly deserted dirt road.
In the middle of a rainstorm, a man calling himself Bob Laurent appears in the night on their doorstep, claiming to be an old family friend. He seems harmless enough, only Betty has no memory of him. Yet he knows everything about her, her father and their lives. He even knows intimate details about Will and his life. While the storm rages on, a cauldron of tension, suspicion and fear builds between the couple and the stranger, dragging Will and Betty to the very brink of madness.
A vile and unrelenting evil has returned to claim what was taken from it long ago, and all the demons of the past, present and probable future have come home to roost. Before the storm clears and the sun rises, Will and Betty Colby will come to know the horrifying truth.
People live and die…but the evil they do is eternal.
