Killing Time

A Dodie O’Dell Mystery

Killing Time (A Dodie O’Dell Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
6th in Series
Publisher: Lyrical Press (June 2, 2020)
Number of Pages: 215

With Halloween just around the corner, Dodie O’Dell is making preparations to transform the Windjammer Restaurant on the Jersey Shore into a haunted house, while the Etonville Little Theatre is staging Dracula. But casting the titular Transylvanian is proving challenging. The amateur actors in the company are not shy about chewing the scenery, but who among them can convincingly sink their fangs into a victim’s neck? When a mysterious newcomer with a transfixing Eastern European accent lands the part, rumors that he might be an actual vampire start to take flight—not unlike the bat who’s recently been spotted in the town park.

But everyone’s blood really runs cold when a stranger is found in the cemetery with a real stake in his heart. Dodie decides to put her Halloween theme menu on the back burner and stick her neck out to bring the killer into the light of day. She’d better keep her wits about her, though—or Dodie may be the next one to go down for the Count . . .

Enjoy this peek inside:

“It sure looks haunted,” Edna murmured to no one in particular, to the cast of Dracula in general. They were grouped around her on the sidewalk that ran past the old Hanratty place that Carlos and Bella had rented. I’d never been inside though once I’d driven by it when I first moved to Etonville on my way out of town. The house stood on half an acre of scruffy lawn with patches of dried dirt, surrounded by a few straggly trees—minus leaves at this time of the year—and no neighbors. The nearest houses were on a side street some distance away. The three-story building looked as if it might collapse at any moment, its outer walls covered with weathered, gray shakes, the steps to the front door supported by concrete building blocks. There was no handrail. Light leaked out of windows on the first floor. Curtains covering small, circular panes on the third story—an attic room?—quivered. Was someone up there watching us? I shivered. A turret rose upward from the right side of the structure, giving the house a smidge of outdated dignity. A drain pipe dangled loosely from the gutter.

“Let’s go.” Penny corralled actors and nudged everyone forward to the front door. There were six company members, Renfield saying he’d be along later, plus Penny, Lola, Pauli, and me. Strength in numbers.

We crept across the porch cautiously, aware of the creaking beneath us as the flooring shifted with each individual’s footsteps. Penny put out a hand to knock on the door. Before she could hit knuckles to wood, it flew open. “Welcome everyone!” Bella stood in the doorway, a silhouette backlit by muted foyer lighting.

Behind her Carlos stood silently, observing the group huddled in his entryway, like deer caught in headlights.

Lola took the lead, moving graciously into the house. “Thank you. So nice of you to invite us to your home.”

I’m not sure what the members of the Etonville Little Theatre were expecting. Given the exterior and location of the Hanratty homestead, I anticipated something out of a late-night classic horror film.

The first thing Marie noticed when she walked into the house was the
smell, the second thing she noticed was the water. It smelled like the lake,
and there were puddles of murky water all over the house. She followed a trail
down the foyer and was blocked from going any further by the many men and women
going in and out of the bedroom at the end of the hall.

“You didn’t find his body here, did you?”

“I’m not at liberty to discuss that with you.”

She walked back down the hall and into the living room, everything was
exactly where it had been left after he had gone to bed. She looked around,
then started toward the sliding glass door. She looked down at the floor and
realized she had just stepped off the plastic, and onto the rug. There, on the
dirty beige carpet was the outline of a foot. She could clearly see each and
every indentation of the toes. Toes that clearly belonged to a woman. She could
even see the shape of a ring on the second toe. She stared at the footprint for
a long moment before his voice penetrated her thoughts.

“That’s as far as you go. Okay, I let you come in here and look around.
Now it’s time to tell me what you know.”

She turned and walked out of the house, down the pavement, then ducked
under the tape and stood by her car, shaking.

Daniel Morris followed her, then put a hand on her shoulder, “You said
you had information for me.”

Her tear-stained face looked up, “He killed my daughter. If he didn’t, he
helped.”

He ran his hand through his hair, “You told me you knew who killed him.”

“My daughter did, of course.” She turned and got into her car, then drove
away without another word.

About Author Mary Cook:

Mary Cook is a retired police detective that lives in a small town right outside a ring of fire, just on the other side of…no wait, that’s a different character.

Actually retired, with hours and hours to write the next great novel, oh wait…nope that’s me. Yes, totally retired. Worlds come alive in my head, characters stand over my shoulder, and sometimes they wake me up at night. All of them want to come alive, to have their stories written. No matter how I think the story should go, it goes according to how the character decides it should. An evil
character finds redemption. A beloved character is massacred for no good
reason. They all write their own stories.

The ideas come to me, the character develops a personality, and the result is a book. I
sincerely hope that everyone will love my books, but what I write isn’t for
everyone, and that’s okay. (Is it Mary? You sure you don’t want me to take care
of it?) (Get back in the book, Ann!) I love to write stories that make you
think, maybe make you a little uncomfortable. I am actually a pretty boring
person. Retired, live in a dungeon (my office), two birds and a dog. Every now
and then my husband expects me to come out and interact with the world, and I
do (begrudgingly). Writing is my hobby, I used to do other things with my
hands, crochet, knit…but then I got old(er), and they just don’t work as good
as they used to.

On a more personal note, I do have children. I have three grown children, and lots and
lots of grandchildren, with a few great-grandchildren. It’s like they’re in a
competition on who can produce the most. If any of you read the back of the
book, you’ll know that there’s more. But, outside of that, nothing. Boring. So,
I bring life and color into the world through the pages of my books. Every time
someone buys a book, or gives a review, I’m delightfully surprised. My eternal
gratitude to all of you, for reading what I have written, and allowing me to
become a small part of your life.

Diary Of A Lost Witch

by Reut Barak

Synopsis

Molly is in trouble. Running away from home to escape the dangers of her coven, she ends up in Edinburgh at a time of Corona. Homeless and running for her life, she must find a new coven and get the help she needs to protect herself, or she is not going to make it back.

Read a Blog Entry:

April 13

The weekend was long, and I ended up having to sleep outside in the park. There was one guy on gumtree that said he was able to host people, but he seemed creepy. There were two more ads that didn’t reply to my email, but otherwise, it was impossible to find a place to stay.

There is a spell called the Tent spell. It makes a small fixed space safe, invisible to the outside world. You won’t be seen or heard there, and you can use spells inside. When I had given up trying to find a normal bed for the night, I figured I might as well head for one of the parks and cast it there. The park I slept at was called Arthur’s Seat. I found some dense trees at the bottom of it, near the small lake.

Inside my “tent” I cast a mattress and blankets, which were supposed to be comfortable, but I slept horribly. I kept waking up, fearing that someone might accidentally step in and discover me. Someone mortal who would ask a lot of questions, or worse, someone with magic.

It was a relief when the morning came, and I finally opened my eyes to hear the birds, and a few runners. It was also a relief from my dreams, of the terrible things I had left behind.

I dreamt that the witches of May’s coven had found me here, and taken me back to Alice. She had a plan for me, to make an example of me for leaving.

I woke up covered in cold sweat, and sat up for an hour thinking, before I was ready to fall back to sleep. I needed to find another coven and fast. There would be a few here in Edinburgh, but unlike back home they didn’t meet in the park during weekends. At least not in the one I’d been sleeping in. I had hoped to bump into a coven that way. That would have justified my homelessness.

This morning was different, though. I was on my way back to a groceries store I found, where the kind seller let me charge my batteries so my new phone doesn’t run out of power. He’d even told me where I could find a local sim card, and I texted the new number back to my moms.

It was really early morning. The store would just be opening. I was walking down the empty streets, when I saw something.

It was a girl, about my age, walking her dog. She had a sweater with a university logo, and the dog suddenly pulled hard on the leash. She cursed, falling straight on her right knee, and then screamed from the pain and cursed again. I rushed to her to help her up, and then I saw, or rather felt something. Something inside her was spreading warmth from her heart towards that knee to heal it. And there was only one way I could sense such a phenomenon. She was using magic.

Synopsis

Zoey Rivers has a pretty great job as Head of Staff at Sunnyside Retired Witches Community. She’s good at handling the magical messes that are part and parcel of providing a home for elderly (and some slightly senile) witches.

But when the messes turn from slightly sloppy to hugely horrible, Zoey realizes there’s more involved than just her residents.

If she doesn’t figure out who’s causing havoc at the Home, the place might not be standing for much longer.

If you love crime capers with magic, mayhem, and mystery, you’ll adore Zoey Rivers and her comical crew of witch retirees.

Please note: This book is a crime caper, not a murder mystery.

Knights of Ash
Of Knights and Wizards Book 5
Dragon fantasy and romance collide in this series of a coming of age wizard and his many trials and tribulations of suddenly being thrown into the wizarding world. A medieval world of dragons, wizards and wizards and of course knights. Did I mention talking dragons? And one dragon in particular that bonds with Marcus which is unheard of in this land. A wonderful series of great and unpredictable adventure.
Marcus always thought that dragons were at the top of the food chain, but crunchers are moving into the area and they kill dragons. The Tar-Cranian Wizard cannot imagine his land without dragons, but even the sorcerers, including Raina and Ash may have enough experience to stop them.
And Marcus must journey to the Upside-Down forest to replenish his magical ingredients, but at more than five hundred leagues away the chances of returning are not good.
Meanwhile, a hunter named Shaun has eyes for the woman that lives across from him, but his father is ready to sell her.

I managed to squeeze in that nap I wanted. And I also got a lot done this week. Cleaned house from top to bottom and did some much needed yard work. I also spent some time in the pool almost every day. Either before or after work. It really helped with my aches and pains from work. I feel so good!

Stay safe and take care everyone.

Nearly Departed

An Eve Appel Mystery

by Lesley A. Diehl

Nearly Departed (An Eve Appel Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
7th in Series
Publisher: Epicenter Press (January 14, 2020)
Print Length: 180 pages
Digital ASIN: B083G9GDJY

Tired of sitting surveillance on insurance fraud, apprentice PI Eve Apple Egret gets her first big case, one where the outcome is important and personal. Eve’s best friend Madeleine has few relatives, so her Uncle Shamus is special, but someone is determined to kill him and has tried several times. Eve is certain she can identify who is after him, but this time she may have taken on more than even our self-confident Eve can handle. Coping with a growing toddler and a teenager, devoting time to the consignment shop and finding someone who can go undercover in a sexual harassment case all vie for Eve’s attention. Eve knows she cannot fail Madeleine. This is more than her favorite uncle’s life. His death would mean devastating loss for Madeleine and call into question Eve’s commitment as a friend and her ability as a PI.

About Author Lesley A. Diehl

Cows, Lesley learned as a child growing up on a farm, have a twisted sense of humor. They chased her when she went to the field to herd them in for milking, and one ate the lovely red mitten her grandmother knitted for her. Determining that agriculture wasn’t her career path, she took a job as a stripper, book cover stripper for a publishing company, that is. Now after many years as a college professor and university administrator, she has returned to the world of books and uses her country roots and her training to concoct stories designed to make people laugh in the face of murder. “A good chuckle,” says Lesley,” keeps us emotionally well-oiled long into our old age.”
